Telmatherina prognatha is the wolf among the sailfin silversides of Lake Matano — a slender, large-jawed predator from one of freshwater's best-studied species radiations. Most of its Sulawesi relatives are small invertebrate-pickers; this one carries a projecting, toothed upper jaw and the lean profile of a fish built to chase down prey. It lives in a single ancient lake in the Malili system of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and the IUCN lists it as Near Threatened.

Taxonomy & naming

Telmatherina prognatha was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1991 as part of his work on the sailfin silversides of Sulawesi. It belongs to the family Telmatherinidae within the order Atheriniformes — the silverside lineage — and to the genus Telmatherina, a flock of species that is largely endemic to the Malili Lakes of South Sulawesi (formerly South Celebes), Indonesia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Telmatherina prognatha Kottelat, 1991, with the authority unparenthesised because the species remains in the genus in which it was first placed.

The genus name Telmatherina joins the Greek telma (genitive telmatos), 'swamp' or 'marsh', with atherina, the classical name for the smelt or sand-smelt, reflecting the group's silverside affinities. The specific epithet prognatha comes from Greek roots meaning 'forward jaw' (pro-, 'forward', and gnathos, 'jaw'), pointing straight at the diagnostic feature: an anterior horizontal portion of the premaxilla that projects forward and is set with teeth. That jaw and the slender body tell it apart at a glance from its more numerous, deeper-bodied congeners.

Telmatherina is a textbook adaptive radiation — a 'species flock' confined to Lake Matano and the wider Malili system that has drawn evolutionary biologists for decades. T. prognatha sits at the predatory end of that flock. Sorting out the boundaries and relationships of the various Telmatherina forms remains an active line of work, since the radiation runs from well-defined species through a range of intermediate and colour morphs.

Morphology

Telmatherina prognatha is a slender, elongate silverside reaching about 3.5 in in standard length. Everything about it reads as a predator: the body is more streamlined and less deep than in most other Matano sailfin silversides, and strong jaws dominate the head. The premaxilla is the diagnostic character — its anterior horizontal portion projects forward and bears teeth, running about as long as the lateral part of the bone and roughly as long as the distance from the rear tip of the maxilla to the eye. This forward-set, toothed jaw gives the species both its name and its predator's profile.

Other features separate it from congeners: rounded anal and second-dorsal fins, and a short caudal peduncle with a length-to-depth ratio reported around 1.49 to 1.57. Like other telmatherinids it has the divided dorsal fin and the slender, silvery body plan of the silverside lineage, but the proportions shift toward a faster, more elongate form. Published length-weight parameters (a ≈ 0.00389, b ≈ 3.12) fit that slim build.

Detailed colour description for this species is data-sparse in the primary literature, but morphological studies of Matano Telmatherina report clear differences in body shape and coloration between the sexes. As in the genus broadly, males tend to be the more ornamented and the larger-finned sex; precise live coloration of T. prognatha is best treated as variable and not firmly documented here.

Habitat

Telmatherina prognatha is endemic to Lake Matano, the deepest and one of the most ancient lakes of the Malili Lakes system in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. A deep, ancient tectonic lake, Matano is the cradle of the Telmatherina species flock, and T. prognatha lives nowhere else. It is a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish that works the open and near-shore waters rather than the bottom.

Surveys of Matano Telmatherina have sampled the genus across both vegetated littoral zones and rocky shorelines, and T. prognatha turns up across this littoral and open-water mosaic. As the flock's predator, it favours the parts of the lake where it can run down mobile prey in the water column. Matano is known for its clear, mineral-influenced water; physico-chemical preferences for this species in particular aren't well documented, so its tolerances are best inferred from the lake's warm, clear tropical conditions rather than pinned to figures.

Single-lake endemism is the ecological fact that defines it. Confinement to one ancient basin is the source of both its evolutionary interest — as a product of in-situ radiation — and its vulnerability, since no second population exists anywhere to buffer it against changes in Matano.

Feeding

Telmatherina prognatha is the predatory specialist of the Matano flock. Its projecting, toothed premaxilla and strong jaws are built for seizing larger, more evasive prey than the small invertebrates its deeper-bodied congeners pick at — most likely small fishes and larger mobile zooplankton. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.1, in line with a carnivorous, partly piscivorous diet rather than benthic grazing.

Functional studies of prey capture in sailfin silversides show the group blends ram and suction feeding, with large-jawed forms biased toward ram capture — lunging forward to overtake and engulf mobile prey — rather than the suction-dominated picking of smaller invertivores. The forward-set jaw of T. prognatha fits: this is the build of a fish made to close on and grasp evasive targets in open water.

Gut-content data for the species are sparse in the available literature, so its diet is best framed by trophic position and feeding mechanics — a mid-level predator within the Matano radiation — rather than a confirmed prey list.

Mating

Courtship specific to Telmatherina prognatha is thin in the primary sources, so most of what can be said comes from the genus and from the sexual dimorphism documented in Matano Telmatherina. Studies report differing morphometrics and coloration between males and females, which in sailfin silversides usually goes with male courtship display — the more colourful, larger-finned males signalling to females.

Sailfin silversides are known for visually driven mate choice and, within the Telmatherina radiation, for assortative mating among colour types, a mechanism thought to feed the flock's diversity. T. prognatha likely pairs the same way, through male display and female choice in the littoral and open-water zones, but its courtship is data-sparse and nothing here goes beyond that framework.

Given the predatory ecology and slender build, any account of its mating stays provisional. The firm, documented point is just that the sexes differ in shape and colour, consistent with sexual selection operating within the Matano flock.

Breeding

Breeding data for Telmatherina prognatha are absent from the consulted sources, and the species is essentially undocumented as an aquarium-bred fish. Telmatherina, like the rest of the atheriniform silversides, lays adhesive eggs that attach to substrate or vegetation by fine filaments — the standard sailfin-silverside mode — but no one has reliably recorded clutch size, spawning rhythm, or developmental timing for this species.

Better to say plainly that this is a wild, single-lake endemic whose reproduction in Matano has never drawn the kind of hobbyist breeding accounts that popular rainbowfishes have. Spawning probably happens in the littoral and vegetated zones where the genus is sampled, and the eggs are presumed to be the adhesive, filament-attached type that runs through the family.

Anyone trying to work with it in captivity would have almost no published guidance to lean on, and should treat its breeding biology as an open question.

In the aquarium

You won't find Telmatherina prognatha in the average shop. Malili Lakes silversides reach specialist keepers now and then, but this predatory single-lake endemic is rarely available and has almost no husbandry literature of its own, so anything said about keeping it has to be general rather than a tested care sheet.

What we can work from: a slender, active, open-water predator out of a warm, clear tropical lake. That points to a spacious tank with open swimming room, clean and well-oxygenated water, and tankmates it won't treat as prey — and that won't outcompete a specialised hunter. The Malili Lakes are mineral-influenced, not soft blackwater, so hard, neutral-to-alkaline water is a safer starting point than acidic soft water, though precise parameters aren't documented. FishBase rates it harmless to humans and of low fishing vulnerability.

Between its conservation status and its rarity in the trade, this is a fish for advanced keepers and conservation-minded specialists, not the general hobby. Read its care as inferred from lake habitat and predatory ecology, not as an established protocol.

Conservation

Telmatherina prognatha is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, under range-restriction criteria (B1b(iii,iv,v)+2b(iii,iv,v)). The listing reflects a restricted-range endemic confined to Lake Matano, where a small geographic range and ongoing pressure on the habitat keep it near the threshold for a threatened category.

The Malili Lakes face the familiar threats to ancient-lake endemics: habitat alteration, water-quality change, and — most dangerous for fishes like this — introduced non-native species. Invasive fishes in the Matano system are a known problem for its native silverside and shrimp faunas, piling predation and competition onto an already narrowly distributed species. For a fish that exists in only one lake, any such pressure runs outsized, because there is no outlying population to fall back on.

The wider Telmatherina flock is a flagship of Sulawesi's freshwater biodiversity, and the fate of T. prognatha can't be separated from the health of Lake Matano as a whole. Near Threatened is the signal: not yet in steep decline, but wholly dependent on the continued integrity of one vulnerable lake.
