Taxonomy & naming
Edward Drinker Cope described this fish as Geophagus amoenus in 1872, in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, from material collected on the Amazonian expedition of James Orton. The type locality is the Río Ambyiacu (now usually spelled Ampiyacu), a tributary entering the Amazon near Pebas in northeastern Peru. The specific epithet is the Latin amoenus — 'pleasant, lovely, charming' — which gives the seldom-used book name 'pleasant cichlid,' a straight translation rather than an established trade name.
The trouble is the type material. Cope's holotype went to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (ANSP), but Böhlke's 1984 type catalog recorded no surviving types, and the specimen has long been treated as lost. Some hobby sources report that the holotype was more recently re-discovered, but that claim is not confirmed in the primary taxonomic catalogs and should be treated with caution. Without a securely anchored type, the name came unmoored. Sven Kullander, the genus's leading reviser, treated it as a nomen dubium in his 1986 monograph and later, in the 2003 Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, listed it as a species inquirenda within Apistogramma — a name of uncertain application that cannot be matched to any living population. Some European hobby compilations go further, suggesting Cope's original description may actually fit a pike cichlid (Crenicichla) rather than an Apistogramma at all.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes nonetheless carries it as 'valid as Apistogramma amoena (Cope 1872),' reflecting later authors (Ortega & Vari 1986; Staeck 2003; Meza-Vargas et al. 2021) who kept the combination on checklists. The result is an awkward middle ground: formally valid, but effectively undiagnosable. That is exactly why Mike Wise, in his widely used working census, recognizes the described Apistogramma 'not including Apistogramma amoena' (and Apistogramma parva), and why his 2020 species-groups synopsis assigns it to no group at all. It sits within Apistogramma, the largest genus of Neotropical dwarf cichlids — well over ninety described species in the subfamily Geophaginae, and many more undescribed forms in the trade.
Morphology
The honest answer is that nobody can describe Apistogramma amoena with confidence, because the fish it refers to is unknown. Cope's brief 1872 account and the missing holotype leave no usable diagnosis, and there is no agreed-upon living population to photograph or measure. FishBase lists a maximum length of about 2.5 in total length for males and roughly 2.5 in for females, but these figures are inherited from generic Apistogramma data rather than from verified amoena specimens.
What can be said is genus-typical. Apistogramma are small, laterally compressed cichlids in which males are usually larger and far more ornamented than the drab, often yellow females — a textbook case of sexual dimorphism. Males of many species develop extended dorsal-fin rays, lyre- or spade-shaped tails, and bold lateral bands or rows of spots; the genus name itself, 'uncertain line,' points to the variably developed, often incomplete lateral line. Any color plate you find labeled 'Apistogramma amoena' deserves suspicion: without a usable type, such identifications are guesses, and the name is far more likely to be a historical placeholder than a fish on a dealer's list.
Habitat
The only locality data tied to the name is Cope's type locality: the Río Ampiyacu drainage in the Loreto region of northeastern Peru, within the wider Amazon (Río Amazonas) basin. FishBase restricts the distribution to exactly this — the Amazon basin in Peru, Río Ampiyacu — while Eschmeyer's Catalog gives a broader, almost certainly over-inclusive 'Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia' that reflects old checklist propagation more than confirmed records. On present evidence the species is documented from Peru alone.
The Ampiyacu itself is real and well studied by aquarists: a forest river near the town of Pebas whose lower reaches carry tannin-stained blackwater and whose tributaries hold a genuine community of dwarf cichlids, including described species such as Apistogramma barlowi, Apistogramma agassizii, and Apistogramma ortegai. These are soft, acidic, dimly lit waters — the classic Amazonian blackwater biotope, with leaf litter, submerged wood, and shaded sandy margins, broadly pH 5 to 7, very low hardness, and warm tropical temperatures. Whatever fish Cope netted in 1872 presumably came from that kind of setting. But because Apistogramma amoena cannot be matched to any of the species now known from the drainage, its 'habitat' is an inference from neighbours rather than a documented fact.
Feeding
There is no diet study or ecological work specific to Apistogramma amoena — unsurprising for a name without a recognizable referent. FishBase assigns it a modelled trophic level of about 3.2, the placeholder value for a small benthic micro-predator, not a measured figure.
The feeding ecology can only be sketched from the genus. Apistogramma are bottom-oriented sift-feeders of shaded forest streams: they take mouthfuls of fine sand and detritus and winnow out small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, and other meiofauna — expelling the substrate through the gills. In the structurally complex, low-productivity blackwaters of the western Amazon they occupy the understorey of the fish community, foraging among leaf litter and roots while themselves serving as prey for larger cichlids, characins, and pike cichlids. That is a fair picture of how a small Ampiyacu Apistogramma would live; it is not direct evidence about this particular name.
Mating
No courtship or pairing observations exist for a verified Apistogramma amoena, so what FishBase reports under this name is drawn from generalized Apistogramma biology. That biology, however, is well documented across the genus and worth stating plainly.
Most Apistogramma practise a polygynous, harem-like mating system. A dominant male holds a comparatively large territory that overlaps the smaller territories of several females, and he courts and spawns with each female in turn, mating sequentially across the females within his range. Females are the resident, cave-holding sex — each defends a spawning site and the patch of substrate around it — while the male patrols the wider area and drives off rivals. Pair bonds are therefore loose and male-biased in the open, but tightly female-centred at each nest. There is no reason to think the Ampiyacu fish Cope described departed from this pattern, but that is an expectation drawn from relatives, not a record for this name.
Breeding
No reproductive observations exist for a verified Apistogramma amoena; the account below is the genus-wide pattern FishBase carries under the name. Most Apistogramma are cave-spawning substrate brooders with a strongly female-centred brood-care system. The female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs — small for a cichlid, typically a few dozen (genus figures run roughly 30 to 80, with no fecundity ever recorded for this particular name) — on the ceiling or wall of a cave, be it a rock crevice, a leaf, or in aquaria a flowerpot or shell, where the male fertilizes them; she then guards and fans the eggs while the male patrols the wider area. Eggs typically hatch in three to four days, after which the female leads and defends a tight school of free-swimming fry, often signalling to them with exaggerated colour changes and body postures. For all their small size, females can be ferociously aggressive in defence of a brood. This female-tending cave-spawner pattern is essentially universal in the genus.
In practice there is no established aquarium stock traded as Apistogramma amoena, so the account above is how an Ampiyacu Apistogramma breeds, not a documented record of this particular name.
In the aquarium
The most important fact here is identity, not husbandry: a tank labelled Apistogramma amoena does not reliably identify any fish in the hobby. The name is a taxonomic ghost (see Taxonomy & naming) that specialists such as Mike Wise leave off working lists, so a fish sold under it is almost certainly a valid but misidentified Ampiyacu species — perhaps near Apistogramma barlowi or Apistogramma agassizii, or an undescribed collector-code form. Treat the identification as provisional. The guidance below still applies, because it is the right approach for any small blackwater Apistogramma from the western Amazon, which is what such a fish will be.
Tank: about 60 × 15.5 in (~20 US gal) suits a single pair, while a harem of one male with two or three females wants at least 35.5 in so each female can hold her own territory. These bottom-dwellers need floor area over height and fine sand — they sift mouthfuls of it, and sharp gravel irritates the mouth. Cover the sand with dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, beech) for tannins and cover, add bogwood, and give at least one cave per female (terracotta half-pots, coconut shells, clay tubes, or flat-stone crevices). Low plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne are fine; bright, open tanks are not.
Water: soft, acidic blackwater — general hardness typically below 2 °dGH in the wild, pH commonly 5.0 to 6.5, tannin-stained, and 79–84 °F. Cut hard tap water with RO and drop pH naturally with leaf litter and wood rather than chemicals; a stable pH of 5.5 to 6.8 and hardness below 5 °dGH are realistic targets, with wild-type forms wanting the lower end. Keep filtration clean but gentle — a sponge filter or low-output hang-on-back beats a strong current.
Feeding: small live and frozen foods are the staple — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, micro- or black worms, and chironomid (bloodworm) larvae. Small granules can supplement, but flake alone is inadequate; feed small amounts two or three times a day, since soft, acidic tanks foul quickly.
Tankmates: peaceful toward fish in other water layers, so upper-swimming tetras (pencilfish, Nannostomus species, Hyphessobrycon species) are natural companions. Avoid anything large enough to eat them, bottom competitors (most corydoras are fine; loaches can be trouble), and other cavity-holding cichlids, which compete for caves or interbreed if congeneric. A brooding female turns sharply territorial and, in a cramped tank, can harass a cornered male to death.
Common mistakes: keeping them in hard, alkaline tap water (the fish survive but colour poorly, rarely spawn, and catch bacterial infections); bare, under-furnished tanks that collapse the harem into chasing or a single female monopolising every site; and trusting the label as an identification. Conservation
Apistogramma amoena has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — its status is Not Evaluated (a Red List search returns no record, consistent with FishBase, Version 2025-2), as are CITES and CMS. That is the expected outcome for a name that cannot be tied to a real, mappable population: there is nothing concrete to assess. It carries no targeted collection pressure of its own, simply because it is not a recognized fish in the ornamental trade.
The wider context is real. The genus Apistogramma is one of the most species-rich groups of Neotropical cichlids and is heavily exploited for the ornamental-fish trade, with the small forest streams around Iquitos — close to the Ampiyacu and to Peru's main ornamental exporters — among the most intensively collected waters in Amazonia (Estivals et al. and colleagues, on Apistogramma agassizii diversity and conservation; the genus is catalogued in Kullander's 2003 Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America). The documented threats there are less population collapse from aquarium harvest than habitat change: local deforestation, stream degradation, and the risk that narrow-range, stream-dwelling species are lost — or exported under a wrong name — before they are ever properly described. Most Amazonian cichlids that have been assessed fall under Least Concern or remain Not Evaluated, facing ornamental collection and habitat alteration rather than outright collapse, and that framing fits here too. The honest takeaway is unusual but important: the conservation question for Apistogramma amoena is less 'how threatened is this fish' than 'which real, undescribed Ampiyacu populations is this old name quietly standing in for,' and whether those survive the pressures on the western Amazon's blackwater streams long enough to be sorted out.
