Biotodoma cupido, the cupid cichlid, is a small, sand-sifting eartheater spread across much of the Amazon basin and the rivers of the Guianas. Drab as a juvenile, a settled adult turns brassy gold with red-flushed cheeks laced by iridescent green streaks, and carries a rounded dark blotch high on each flank that hobbyists read as a little heart — the likely source of its name. Its most remarkable trait is a wild behavior almost no aquarist ever sees: in tidal creeks near the Atlantic, brooding parents shadow the rise and fall of the water, defending their young furiously at flood tide, falling dormant in the oxygen-starved low-tide slack, and physically carrying the brood in their mouths to a deeper pit when the creek drains away.

Taxonomy & naming

The cupid cichlid was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840 as Geophagus cupido, in his account of the new Brazilian river fishes collected by Johann Natterer (Annalen des Wiener Museums der Naturgeschichte, volume 2, page 399). The type locality is given as the Rio Negro and Rio Guaporé in Mato Grosso, Brazil — two widely separated waters, the Negro in the northwest and the Guaporé a Madeira tributary far to the south, a hint of the wide range and likely composite nature of the species. The syntypes are held in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW 23094 or 23394, 23122, 23414). The genus Biotodoma was erected by Carl H. Eigenmann and Clarence H. Kennedy in 1903, and the fish has been treated as Biotodoma cupido ever since; the original name Geophagus cupido survives only as a synonym. Sven O. Kullander redescribed Peruvian material in his 1986 monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon and cautioned that the widespread "Biotodoma cupido of authors" probably comprises several similar species — a suspicion the hobby echoes in the various trade forms (the Santarém fish often sold as Biotodoma sp. "red fin Tocantins," plus Belém and Peruvian forms) but which no one has yet resolved formally. Its only confirmed congener is the Orinoco-and-upper-Negro Biotodoma wavrini (Gosse, 1963); the two are separated by body shape and by the position of the flank blotch, which in cupido sits above the upper lateral line and in wavrini on or below it. Weidner further notes an as-yet-undescribed Guyanese population, also distinguished from both by the position of its lateral spot, that has never been formally worked up. Within the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae, morphological (Kullander, 1998) and molecular (López-Fernández et al., 2005) analyses place Biotodoma in the large geophagine core alongside Geophagus, Gymnogeophagus, Mikrogeophagus, Crenicara and Dicrossus, part of a clade that shows clear signs of rapid adaptive radiation.

Morphology

This is a compact, deep-bodied eartheater with a steep forehead and a small, downturned mouth built for picking through sand. It is among the larger of the fishes loosely called "dwarf" cichlids: FishBase lists a maximum of 4.5 in standard length, Seriously Fish gives 3.5–4 in SL, and aquarium accounts cite roughly 4 in and occasionally a little more. Juveniles and freshly imported fish are unremarkable — a washed-out grey-brown with faint vertical bars, a fish that, as one hobby writer put it, "really has to grow into its looks." A mature, settled adult is another animal entirely: the body deepens to warm gold with red highlights running into the cheeks, and the face is overlaid with bright iridescent blue-green streaks that give the fish its alternative trade name, green-streaked eartheater. The single most reliable mark is a round-to-slightly-oblong dark blotch set high on each flank, above the upper lateral line, bordered fore and aft with pale patches — the "heart" of the cupid imagery, and a key separation from Biotodoma wavrini — along with a scatter of fine, narrow vertical bars over a light brownish, silver-sheened base colour. A dark bar runs through the eye. Colour is markedly geographic: mature fish from Peru typically show a distinct yellow zone behind the operculum, while Santarém-region fish (the Tapajós population that supplies much of the trade) run to bright yellow-orange flanks under an overall bluish-green sheen — variation striking enough that older specimens of different origin can look like entirely different fishes. Sexual dimorphism only becomes legible in adults, and even then only in dominant individuals: mature males carry an unbroken iridescent bluish line beneath the eye, which in females is broken into a row of dots, but only the most dominant females show that dotted line clearly — younger or subordinate females may show just one faint, interrupted line, or none. Males also grow somewhat larger and more slender-bodied than females, and develop longer filamentous extensions on the dorsal and caudal fins; older claims that unbroken vs. broken facial striping alone reliably sexes the species oversimplify a pattern that really depends on social status as much as sex. Because the species matures slowly, half-grown fish are effectively unsexable, which contributes to its reputation as hard to pair and breed.

Habitat

Biotodoma cupido is one of the more widely distributed Neotropical cichlids. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it from the Amazon and Essequibo basins across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and Peru, and the IUCN assessment adds the Tocantins–Araguaia drainage, giving an estimated extent of occurrence above six million square kilometres. (Despite a persistent hobby habit of lumping the two, the Orinoco populations belong to its congener Biotodoma wavrini, not to cupido.) The range runs from the Ucayali system in Peru eastward to the Tocantins at the Amazon's mouth, south to the Río Mamoré in Bolivia, and north into Guyana's Essequibo. Named localities are correspondingly wide-flung: in Peru the Río Javarí (Yavarí), Ucayali, Ampiyacu, Napo, Mazán, Nanay, Tahuayo and Samiria; in Brazil the Rio Tefé, Rio Curuá and Rio Tapajós — the last a major supplier of trade stock via Santarém; and in Bolivia the Río Guaporé at its confluence with the Río Machupo. Unconfirmed reports place the species also in the Rio Tocantins and Rio Araguaia. Across that span it behaves as a habitat generalist of slow-to-moderate, tannin-stained lowland waters, avoiding torrential current; it favours extensive sandy or muddy bays with little to no current and shallow, low-predation sandy shallows in particular, turning up only sporadically among wood, leaf litter or stony substrate — though the difficulty of fieldwork during the rainy season may understate how often it uses those habitats. Many of its haunts swing dramatically in depth and turbidity with the annual flood pulse. It is consistently a soft, warm, acidic-water fish. FishBase summarizes pH 6.0–8.0 and a relatively wide hardness band (dH 5–19) at 73–77 °F, while care-oriented and field sources skew softer and warmer — Seriously Fish gives pH 5.0–7.0 and 68–86 °F, and hobby accounts note wild fish in water below pH 6.5 at temperatures near 86 °F. A field study in the igarapé Belmont, a clear-but-tannin-stained tributary of the Rio Madeira near Porto Velho (Rondônia), recorded a mean pH of 6.1, water temperature of 82 °F, and very low conductivity (about 39 µS/cm). No formal published depth range exists; its documented haunts — sandy creek beds, tidal channels and seasonally flooded shallows — are shallow water, on the order of the upper metre or two (a habitat-typical estimate, not a measured maximum).

Feeding

Like its geophagine relatives, the cupid cichlid is a benthic sand-sifter: it takes mouthfuls of fine substrate, sorts edible particles from grit in the mouth and gill rakers, and expels the cleaned sand. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, reflecting an omnivore that leans toward small animal prey — chironomid (midge) larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and other benthic invertebrates gleaned from sand and leaf litter, supplemented by organic detritus and some plant material. Its whole digestive design assumes near-continuous, low-intensity foraging rather than occasional large meals, which is why keepers who feed several small portions a day, over a sift-friendly sand bottom strewn with leaf litter, get the best growth and condition. Notably, although it is an eartheater, it is a comparatively gentle digger: unlike larger Geophagus or Satanoperca it does not relandscape a tank or uproot plants wholesale, confining its excavation mostly to feeding and to uncovering spawning surfaces.

Mating

Outside of breeding, Biotodoma cupido is a loosely gregarious, surprisingly peaceful fish that lives in groups and sorts itself into a dominance hierarchy; juveniles in particular show a strong collective response to threat, packing together. Keepers consistently recommend a group of at least six, because in smaller numbers a dominant individual will single out and harass — sometimes to death — a weaker tankmate. Pairing and courtship are female-driven. As observed by breeder Joe McElheron and reported through Seriously Fish, ripe females begin the process: they dig pits, swim in a head-down posture with darkened coloration, and lip-lock with one another to establish dominance, while the males hang back and watch. This lip-wrestling courtship is the behavioral hook behind the "cupid" name as much as the heart-shaped flank mark is the visual one. After two or three days of this, a female selects and cleans a spawning surface and defends the area around it, her short, broad ovipositor becoming visible as spawning nears. The species is slow to mature — sexual maturity comes at roughly 18–24 months — and young first-time spawners commonly go through the motions without producing viable eggs, the main reason the fish has a name for being difficult.

Breeding

Biotodoma cupido is a biparental substrate spawner, but with an important wrinkle: despite all the digging, it does not lay its eggs loose in a sand pit. Observations from aquarium breeders indicate the pit-digging is really an attempt to uncover a buried rock or other firm surface, and the fish strongly prefer to lay on a horizontal surface — the top of a stone or a similarly flat, firm base — rather than a cave wall. The bright orange eggs are unusually light for a cichlid's, buoyant enough to float upright off the surface once laid, and are tethered in place by short stalk-like adhesive filaments that keep them from drifting away; this 'p-type' egg (as opposed to the heavier, wall-glued 'l-type' laid by most cave-spawning geophagines) packs several real advantages, since a smaller attachment footprint lets more eggs occupy the same surface, the free-floating egg gets far better oxygenation from a parent's fanning or natural water movement (making fungal loss almost unheard of), and the micropyle sits at the end opposite the stalk, which is thought to improve fertilisation rates. Spawning itself is atypical for a substrate cichlid: the female deposits the entire clutch before the male is allowed in to fertilize it in a single pass, after which she fans vigorously. The female then tends and guards the eggs while the male patrols the surrounding territory; if she leaves, he takes over until she returns — a genuine partnership in which, should one parent be lost, the survivor is capable of carrying the brood alone. In one breeder's account, incubation ran 3–4 days at 73–75 °F, the fry were moved to a prepared pit to absorb their yolk, became free-swimming after about five days, and were then guarded jointly by both parents for several weeks; this normally unaggressive fish becomes markedly bolder while guarding, willing to confront and drive off intruders far larger than itself. Clutch sizes are not well quantified in the literature; hobby spawns appear to run to a few hundred eggs. Useful triggers are a simulated wet-season shift — a quiet, stable period followed by frequent large, soft-water changes and increased flow. The wild story is far stranger and was documented by Frederick Cichocki (Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1977) in a tidal creek off the lower Essequibo in Guyana, where freshwater rises and falls on a semi-diurnal tide — the same population Weidner cites as the genus's clearest illustration that Biotodoma is a genuine substrate brooder rather than the gill-carrying mouthbrooder its name once implied. There, brooding pairs tracked the tide: at flood, with oxygen high, they aggressively drove off brood predators (mostly characins); at low tide, as dissolved oxygen crashed to about 4 mg/L and free carbon dioxide spiked, both parents and predators alike went torpid; and at the lowest water the parents orally transferred the entire brood to a secondary, deeper nest depression — a movable nest tied to the rhythm of the tide.

In the aquarium

For much of the aquarium hobby's history true Biotodoma cupido has been a fish more written about than actually kept: Ad Konings, writing in the Cichlids Yearbook, described it as rarely exported deliberately even though it appears constantly in the aquarium literature, and noted that the best chance of obtaining a genuine specimen was to look for it as an incidental "contaminant" in shipments of other Amazonian eartheaters such as Geophagus surinamensis or Satanoperca leucosticta — an early hobby-side echo of the same taxonomic muddle Kullander later flagged formally (see Taxonomy & naming). Modern trade stock sold under the cupido name is more likely to be Santarém-region or other undescribed Biotodoma forms than the type-locality fish itself, so a buyer chasing true cupido should treat locality data with real skepticism.

Biotodoma cupido is a genuinely rewarding fish for the committed keeper, but it is not a beginner species. Its requirements are specific, and it responds poorly to shortcuts in either water quality or setup. A group of six to eight juveniles — the recommended starting point, since pairs cannot be reliably selected from young fish — should be housed in a tank of at least 47 in in length, and a longer vessel (59 in or more) is better once the fish are approaching adult size at about 4–4.5 in. The footprint matters more than height; these are bottom-dwellers that use horizontal space.

Water chemistry must track what the species encounters in the wild: warm, soft, and acidic. A temperature of 79–84 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, and very low hardness (conductivity below roughly 150 µS/cm, general hardness under 5 °dH) are appropriate targets. Tap water in most of Europe or North America will need to be cut with reverse-osmosis or deionized water before use. Nitrate should be kept low — under 10 mg/L is a reasonable ceiling — and the fish are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite at even low levels. Frequent partial water changes with soft, slightly acidic replacement water are more effective than large, infrequent ones; sudden swings in chemistry, temperature, or even flow rate stress these fish visibly.

The substrate is non-negotiable: fine-grade sand, at least 2 in deep across the full tank floor. Biotodoma cupido is a sand-sifter by anatomy and by habit, and keeping it on gravel or coarse substrate denies it a core behavior, interferes with feeding, and produces chronically stressed fish prone to disease. Leaf litter (dried Indian almond, beech, or oak leaves) scattered over the sand surface serves several purposes: it acidifies and tints the water mildly, provides cover, harbors the microorganisms the fish pick at between feedings, and makes the tank look more like the igarapé habitats the species actually inhabits. Driftwood, bogwood roots, and smooth rounded stones complete the decor; the stones do double duty as potential spawning surfaces. Heavily rooted planting is possible but optional — robust species with well-anchored roots tolerate the gentle digging; floating plants that diffuse overhead light are particularly useful, as the fish are noticeably calmer under indirect illumination.

For tankmates, the key criteria are peaceful temperament, tolerance of warm, soft, acidic water, and no appetite for the bottom zone. Non-aggressive tetras (cardinal, black phantom, rummy-nose), pencil fish, and similar small Amazonian schooling fish occupy the upper water column and cause no conflict. Small corydoras are sometimes recommended but are really better suited to higher pH and somewhat harder water; if they are included, choose species with genuinely overlapping chemistry tolerances. Avoid any fish large enough to swallow a cupid cichlid, anything fast or assertive enough to outcompete it at feeding, and other bottom-dwelling cichlids unless the tank is large enough to give everyone clear territory. A degree of caution applies even within the species: as noted in the Mating section, small groups are unstable — six or more individuals spread aggression, but a group of two or three will almost always produce one bullied fish.

Feeding is straightforward in terms of diet but requires attention to delivery. These fish are benthic, low-intensity foragers; they do poorly with once-a-day heavy feeding but thrive with two or three small meals spread through the day. Frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, artemia, and small worms are taken greedily and form the backbone of a good diet. High-quality sinking micropellets and fine-grade cichlid granules accepted once the fish are settled; flake food is largely ignored. Breeding follows the pattern described under the Breeding section above — biparental substrate spawning on a buried or uncovered hard surface — and is achievable in the aquarium with patience. The fish are slow to mature (around 18–24 months) and early spawns often fail; success rates improve markedly once the pair has one failed batch behind them. Common keeper mistakes are: using gravel or coarse substrate; keeping too few fish (fewer than six); maintaining pH above 7.2 for extended periods; overfeeding with large meals rather than multiple small ones; and expecting quick maturation or easy sexing in fish under 15 months old. Generalizing from eartheater-keeping experience is a reasonable guide where this species is under-documented, but the water-chemistry demands are at the stricter end of the geophagine spectrum.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Biotodoma cupido as Least Concern (assessed 30 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The rationale is straightforward: although little is known about its population, the species occupies an enormous range across the Amazon, Essequibo and Tocantins–Araguaia basins (extent of occurrence roughly 6.1 million km²), no specific threats are documented, and it is unlikely to face range-wide pressure. It is harmless to humans and of no food-fishery importance, but it is a recognized aquarium-trade species exported at the local, national and international levels; much of the trade stock originates around Santarém in Pará, Brazil, and a share of Amazonian ornamental fish moves through sustainable-fishery initiatives such as Project Piaba in the Rio Negro. No collection-driven decline has been flagged for this fish. That favorable status sits inside a basin under mounting strain, however: across Amazonia, hydroelectric damming (which alters the flood pulse the species' floodplain habitats depend on), deforestation, mining and mercury contamination, and changing flow regimes are degrading freshwater ecosystems even where individual species remain common. As a widespread generalist, Biotodoma cupido is far less exposed than the basin's many narrow-range endemics, but the same large-scale pressures form the backdrop against which its long-term outlook should be read.
