Apistogramma piaroa is a small, broad-banded dwarf cichlid from the middle Orinoco of Venezuela and Colombia, a fish that circulated in the hobby for years under the placeholder name "Breitbinden" before it was formally described in 2011. It lives in acidic, almost ion-free blackwater — shallow, leaf-littered streams and forest lagoons where the conductivity can fall below 10 microsiemens. Named for the Piaroa (Huottüja) people of its home rivers, it sits in the tight-knit brevis species-group beside its near-twin Apistogramma megaptera, the two separable mainly by the shape of a courting male's dorsal fin.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma piaroa was described in 2011 by the Colombian ichthyologists Lina M. Mesa S. and Carlos A. Lasso, in their revision of the Orinoco-basin Apistogramma published by Colombia's Alexander von Humboldt Institute. The holotype — an adult male of about 1 in standard length — is registered as MHNLS 16715 at the Museo de Historia Natural La Salle in Caracas, and the type locality is Caño Gavilán, a left-bank tributary of the Río Cataniapo at 5°32'29"N, 67°23'27"W in Amazonas State, Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid and places the genus in the Neotropical cichlid subfamily Cichlinae (the eartheater assemblage older authors called Geophaginae). Like most dwarf cichlids it reached the hobby before it had a Latin name, traded as Apistogramma sp. "Breitbinden" or "Broad-banded" — after its heavy lateral band — and as Apistogramma sp. "Caño Morrocoy." Within the genus it belongs to the trifasciata lineage and, more finely, the brevis species-group, where its closest relative is Apistogramma megaptera (long known as Apistogramma sp. "Kurzlappen"). The two are easy to confuse in shops; as the Apistogramma.com specialist Mike Wise notes, the reliable separation is the shape of a mature male's dorsal fin, not the red facial flush both can show. The epithet honours the Piaroa, who call themselves Huottüja (also De'aruhua); "Piaroa" is the exonym in common use.

Morphology

This is a genuinely small fish. The original description and the IUCN assessment both cap it at about 1.5 in (1.5 in) standard length, while aquarium accounts give a typical adult range of roughly 1.5–2.5 in; males run largest, carrying longer fin extensions that can push them to the upper end or a little beyond in total length. The body is the oval, laterally compressed shape standard for the genus. Its signature is the broad, dark lateral band running from the snout through the eye to the tail base — heavier and more sharply drawn than in many congeners — often joined by a dark bar dropping from the eye across the lower cheek and gill cover. Mature males add colour to the unpaired fins and, in some populations, a red wash over the face and operculum. That red is variable and, as in the related Apistogramma megaptera, a poor identification character even though it can lift the asking price. A small dark blotch may show on the caudal peduncle, but in Apistogramma piaroa — the A164 form — it stays modest and sits below the lateral band, unlike the large, conspicuous peduncle spot of the undescribed A165. Sexual dimorphism is clear: females are smaller and plainer day to day but turn an intense yellow when guarding eggs or fry, the genus-wide badge of a brooding Apistogramma female.

Habitat

Apistogramma piaroa is confined to the middle Orinoco drainage of Venezuela and Colombia. Its documented range runs from the confluence of the Orinoco and Ventuari rivers and the channels of their internal delta, through the lower Río Ventuari (Caños Tigre and Chipiro), down the lower Río Guaviare and Río Vichada on the Colombian side, and up the Río Autana to the Río Cataniapo, which marks its northern limit. The IUCN estimates an extent of occurrence near 31,000 square kilometres and an area of occupancy around 7,700 — a modest range for a Neotropical fish. (A few hobby sources push the distribution into the upper Río Negro of Brazil, but that record appears in neither the formal assessment nor the original description and is best treated as unverified, very possibly a mix-up with similar undescribed forms.) The water defines its biology: oligotrophic, nutrient-poor blackwater. Field measurements from the Orinoco–Ventuari area record conductivity below 10 microsiemens per centimetre and strongly acidic pH, often under 5.3, and the tea-stained Cataniapo tributaries are similarly acidic and ion-poor. The picture is not uniform, though — in lagoons of the lower Guaviare the species turns up at a near-neutral pH around 7.3 with the same very low conductivity, so it is a blackwater specialist that tolerates a spread of pH at consistently low mineral content. The microhabitat is shallow and structured: stream margins and forest pools floored with leaf litter and submerged wood, generally only a fraction of a metre to a metre or so deep.

Feeding

No dedicated gut-content study of Apistogramma piaroa has been published, so its diet is inferred from the genus and from broader work on Orinoco Apistogramma. Like its congeners it is a micro-carnivore — an entomophage, in the regional fish literature — taking small invertebrates from the leaf litter and the top film of sediment: insect larvae (chironomids and other midges prominent among them), microcrustaceans, and other tiny benthic and interstitial animals picked out of the substrate and detritus. FishBase places the genus low on the food web, around trophic level 3.3, in keeping with a small invertebrate-feeder rather than a fish-eater. That carnivorous bent is obvious in the tank: keepers report that wild and wild-descended Apistogramma piaroa strongly prefer live and frozen foods — mosquito larvae, Artemia, small worms — and often ignore dry flake, a reminder that this is an invertivore, not a general scavenger.

Mating

Apistogramma piaroa has an unusual reputation in a genus full of pugnacious little fish: it is relatively peaceful. Experienced keepers report holding several individuals of both sexes together without the constant, lethal aggression some Apistogramma show, and pairs form readily once the water is right. As across the genus, the breeding unit tends toward a loose harem or pair — a male holds a larger territory that overlaps the smaller territories of one or more females, each defending her own spawning cavity. Courtship follows the familiar Apistogramma script: the male displays with fins spread and body turned side-on, deepening his colour, while a receptive female slips into her bright yellow brooding dress and leads him to her chosen cave. She is the centre of gravity of the whole system — she selects and prepares the site, and once the eggs are down she grows markedly more aggressive in its defence, even toward the larger male. Territoriality sharpens around spawning, but by the standards of the genus this is an even-tempered fish that earns less of the "isolate the pair or lose one" warning dwarf cichlids so often need.

Breeding

Reproduction has not been described in the wild, but Apistogramma piaroa is a well-documented cave (cavity) spawner in aquaria and breeds readily once conditions match its native water. The female fastens her eggs to the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — a small cave, a coconut shell, a length of pipe — usually a clutch of about 50 to 70, the small brood expected of a fish this size. Care is essentially maternal in the Apistogramma pattern: she tends and fans the eggs, then leads and guards the free-swimming fry while the male defends the wider territory. Hobby accounts give roughly two to three days to hatching and about five more to free-swimming, after which the female shepherds the brood for several weeks — figures on the order of four to eight weeks of guarding are reported. The triggers are chemical: soft, acidic, warm water (keepers spawn it well below neutral pH and around the mid-20s Celsius) plus conditioning on live food. One practical caution from breeders is to keep substrate-rooting tankmates such as Corydoras out of a spawning tank, since they blunder through the nest cavity and scatter the brood. Newly free-swimming fry are large enough to take Artemia nauplii as a first food.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma piaroa is rarely kept. It moved in small numbers through European specialist circles under the Breitbinden trade name, but formal description in 2011 never turned into wide availability, so most husbandry advice is extrapolated from the closely related Apistogramma megaptera, the brevis-group, and general Apistogramma practice — anything beyond what keepers have reported with piaroa itself should be read in that light.

Water is the non-negotiable. In the wild the fish lives in oligotrophic blackwater below 10 µS/cm and commonly under pH 5.3 (the lower-Guaviare population is the exception, tolerating near-neutral water at the same near-zero mineral content). Aim for soft, acidic water — pH 5.0–6.5, hardness well under 5 °dH, conductivity below 100 µS/cm — at 75–81 °F, mixing reverse-osmosis or rain water to target hardness. Peat filtration or dried leaf litter (catappa, oak) steadies the chemistry and adds the tannins that darken the water toward its native tone.

Tank: about 60 × 15.5 in (roughly 20 US gal) suits a pair or a small harem. A single male with two or three females can work, but each female needs her own territory and sight-breaks — plant clumps, driftwood, and scattered caves (coconut halves, small ceramic pots, curved bamboo). Give it a fine sandy floor to excavate, dim lighting with floating plants, and gentle flow; strong current is wrong for a fish from shallow, nearly stagnant leaf pools.

Tankmates: because direct experience is thin, this generalises from Venezuelan blackwater Apistogramma. Small, soft-water schooling tetras such as Paracheirodon axelrodi (cardinal tetra) or similarly adapted pencilfish make good dithers, filling open water without competing on the bottom. Small, calm Corydoras can share a tank in principle, but keep them away from a spawning pair, since they flush broods from cave entrances. Avoid anything large, fin-nipping, or aggressive, and expect other cave-holders — including rival Apistogramma males — to fight over territory in all but a large, heavily decorated tank.

Common mistakes: hard or alkaline water (it suppresses colour and disrupts spawning), too little live or frozen invertebrate food, and rough acclimation — wild-caught fish especially are slow to settle and feed. Sexing is easy: males are larger with extended dorsal and ventral rays, females smaller and plainer until they flush brilliant uniform yellow with eggs or fry. Difficulty is moderate for a keeper with blackwater experience and high for a newcomer to soft-water cichlids; it is not a fish for a hard-water community.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma piaroa as Least Concern. Lina Mesa-Salazar — one of the species' describers — carried out the assessment on 1 August 2020, Donald C. Taphorn reviewed it, and it was published in 2022; the population trend is listed as unknown, with no estimate of population size. The Least Concern rating rests on the species turning up across several protected and managed areas: on the Colombian side its range falls within the Estrella Fluvial de Inírida Ramsar wetland and near El Tuparro National Park, and on the Venezuelan side it overlaps the Sipapo Protective Forest Reserve and the Cataniapo River protective zone. The one threat the assessment singles out is concrete and serious — illegal gold mining at the Orinoco–Ventuari confluence, in and around Yacapana National Park in Venezuela's Amazonas State, which loads the water with mercury and other contaminants and brings deforestation and settlement to a once-remote area. As a narrow-range blackwater specialist tied to nutrient-poor, acidic streams, Apistogramma piaroa is exactly the kind of fish that mercury pollution and watershed disturbance in the upper Orinoco could harm locally even while the species as a whole stays secure. On the Colombian side the high-plain ("altillanura") sector it occupies is classed as a Vulnerable terrestrial ecosystem and sits within strategic mining-reserve zones, though no active mining is reported there. In the ornamental trade it is a minor presence — the assessors are unsure whether it is traded in any real numbers — so collection pressure does not look like a meaningful threat.
