Apistogramma velifera is a sailfin dwarf cichlid of the blackwater rivers where the Orinoco meets the Guiana Shield, a fish barely larger than a thumb whose males raise a single, unbroken sail of a dorsal fin in display. It belongs to the pertensis group, and within it anchors its own velifera-complex — a small cluster of species that biogeographically bridges the Orinoco and the upper Río Negro through the Casiquiare Channel. Restricted to a sliver of acidic, tea-coloured water around the Estrella Fluvial de Inírida and the Orinoco–Ventuari confluence, it is one of the few Apistogramma the IUCN treats as threatened rather than data-deficient.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma velifera was described by the German aquarist-ichthyologist Wolfgang Staeck in 2003, in the third volume of his Cichliden-Lexikon ("Südamerikanische Zwergbuntbarsche"), with type material from the Orinoco River system in Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both carry Staeck, 2003 as the authority and the Orinoco of Venezuela as the type locality; the original account designates the type locality but no holotype register number is reproduced in the secondary literature, so the locality alone anchors the name here. Before it was formally described the fish circulated in the German hobby under a string of provisional labels — Apistogramma sp. "Segelflossen" (sailfin), Apistogramma sp. "Puerto Ayacucho" (for the Venezuelan town near where it was collected), and Apistogramma sp. "Vierstreifen" (four-stripes). Within the genus it sits in the pertensis group, and the long-running Apistogramma classification maintained by Mike Wise places it as the namesake of a distinct velifera-complex. That complex is interesting precisely because it straddles two lineages: its members carry the broad lateral band more typical of the sister iniridae group, yet retain the separate, isolated caudal-peduncle spot of the pertensis group, so the complex reads as a morphological bridge between the two. A widely repeated hobby-literature claim places velifera in the Madre de Dios of Peru/Bolivia; this traces to an old, erroneous distribution record (it survives in legacy FishBase distribution text) and is contradicted by the current FishBase, Catalog of Fishes and IUCN treatments, all of which restrict the species to the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and adjacent Colombia.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf: mature males reach only about 3 in in total length and females are smaller still, around 1.5 in, figures consistent across the hobby trade (Aquarium Glaser) and aggregator profiles (Fishipedia). FishBase carries no vetted maximum-length measurement, so these are best read as reliable husbandry observations rather than a formal morphometric maximum. The body is the elongate, oval shape typical of pertensis-group apistos, marked by a fairly broad dark lateral band running from the gill cover to the tail and a discrete round spot on the caudal peduncle. The defining feature is the male's dorsal fin, and it is the source of the name: in mature males the membranes (lappets) behind the dorsal spines are fused into a single continuous, sail-like crest, with only the first spine standing free — a more complete fusion than most pertensis-group relatives show, and the trait that earned the species its 'sail-bearing' epithet. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as in most Apistogramma: males are markedly larger, more colourful and carry the enlarged dorsal sail, while females are smaller, plainer outside breeding, and turn an intense yellow with black markings when in spawning condition. One quietly diagnostic detail noted in the velifera-complex is that the infraorbital sensory-pore count is variable — some individuals show four pores, some three, occasionally four on one side and three on the other — a reminder that even fine meristic characters in this group are not perfectly fixed.

Habitat

Apistogramma velifera lives in the blackwater systems of the upper-middle Orinoco and the Guiana Shield, in Venezuela and adjacent Colombia. The IUCN assessment pins its known range tightly: the Estrella Fluvial de Inírida (the 'Inírida river star,' where the Orinoco, Guaviare, Inírida and Atabapo rivers converge) and the Orinoco–Ventuari confluence, an extent of occurrence of roughly 13,894 km2 from only eight collection records. The wider velifera-complex, following Wise, ranges from the upper Río Negro in Brazil to the middle Orinoco, linked across the watershed by the Casiquiare Channel — the natural waterway that bleeds Orinoco water into the Amazon system — which helps explain how a single complex spans two great basins. The water it inhabits is extreme by aquarium standards: soft, acidic and stained dark with humic acids. Field-referenced figures put the temperature around 73–84 °F, pH in the 4.5–5.5 range (with hobby reports of habitats near pH 5), and hardness barely above zero (on the order of 1–2 °dH, sometimes under 1 °dH). These are shallow, marginal habitats — leaf-litter edges of streams, flooded forest and slow channels rather than open river — so the fish occupies the top metre or so of water over a soft, organic bottom; an exact in-situ depth band has not been published, and the shallow figure here is the genus-typical shoreline value rather than a measured one. In the wild it shares this tannin-stained water with other blackwater specialists; field observers have recorded it alongside the green neon tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) and, in the same broad biotope, with altum angelfish.

Feeding

Like its congeners, Apistogramma velifera is a micropredator of the leaf-litter zone — a benthic-leaning omnivore that tilts carnivorous, taking small aquatic invertebrates, micro-crustaceans, insect larvae and other meiofauna sifted and picked from soft sediment and detritus. No gut-content study specific to this species has been published, so its diet is inferred from the well-documented foraging ecology of the genus and from keepers' accounts; FishBase places it at a modelled trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a small invertivore. In the community of a blackwater margin it fills the role countless small Apistogramma fill across northern South America: a bottom-oriented forager that converts the dense invertebrate life of submerged leaf litter into prey for larger fishes and birds, while itself staying small and cryptic among the litter.

Mating

Apistogramma velifera follows the female-led, preferentially monogamous pattern documented for the pertensis group rather than the harem polygyny seen in showier apistos like Apistogramma cacatuoides. In this system the female is the choosy, territory-anchoring partner: she selects a male and bonds to him, and a single male may bond with only one or at most a few females. Courtship is a male performance. Observers describe the male swimming broadside to the female and beginning to unfurl just the front of his dorsal fin, then progressively tipping into a head-down posture as he raises the full sail, sometimes ending almost vertical in the water — the display for which the enlarged fin evolved. Males are notably quarrelsome toward rival males, so in the wild and the tank the social structure is one of competing, display-driven males and discriminating females. The female holds and defends the immediate nest territory; the male's contribution to defence and to brood care is comparatively casual, though keepers report that males do at times help tend the fry.

Breeding

Reproduction has not been described from the wild, but in the genus and in aquaria Apistogramma velifera is a cave-spawning substrate brooder: the female lays a small clutch on the ceiling or wall of a sheltered cavity — a crevice, a leaf, an excavated hollow, or in the tank an upturned pot or coconut shell — and the eggs adhere there. No clutch count is published specifically for velifera; congeneric pertensis-group dwarfs typically lay on the order of 40–80 eggs, and that genus-typical figure is the best available estimate here, not a measured one. Care is essentially maternal: the female guards and fans the eggs and then leads the free-swimming fry in a tight school through the leaf litter, while the male defends the broader territory and may assist. The species has a reputation as one of the harder pertensis-group apistos to spawn, because it will only reproduce in genuinely soft, acidic blackwater conditions — comparable to the demanding Apistogramma nijsseni — so successful breeding depends on driving the water down to very low hardness and a pH well under neutral. As in most Apistogramma, the sex ratio of the resulting fry is strongly temperature-dependent, which is itself a breeding consideration for anyone trying to raise balanced groups.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma velifera is genuinely rare in the hobby. It reaches keepers mainly as occasional German-bred stock — sometimes via specialist importers or Apistogramma-focused breeders — and wild-caught specimens have never arrived on a steady commercial basis. Aquarium experience with this species is consequently thin, and much of what follows is drawn from genus-typical pertensis-group husbandry rather than a deep body of keeper observation; that limitation is noted where it applies.

The water-chemistry requirement is the single non-negotiable: this is a Rio Negro–style blackwater species that will not breed, and may not thrive long-term, in anything approaching tap-water hardness. Target pH 4.5–5.5 and total hardness of 1–2 °dH or lower. Reverse osmosis water, remineralized lightly or blended with a small proportion of harder water and then acidified with botanicals, peat filtration, or black-water extracts, is the standard approach. Temperature can run anywhere in the 75–82 °F band; the lower end of that range (75–79 °F) tends to suit long-term health, with a brief warm-up to 81–82 °F sometimes used to trigger spawning. The fish is reported to be noticeably sensitive to deteriorating water quality, so regular small water changes with suitably soft, acidic replacement water are more important than a large, infrequent change.

A tank in the 15–20 US gal range is workable for a pair, though 20–25 US gal gives the male adequate space to hold his own territory and reduces female harassment if the pair becomes incompatible. Floor space matters more than height. Substrate should be fine, dark sand — dark substrate reduces stress markedly in this genus. Thick leaf-litter (Indian almond/Terminalia catappa leaves are widely used) replicated on top of the sand, combined with tangles of driftwood and a few sheltered planting areas, recreates something of the shallow flooded-margin biotope in miniature. Multiple caves — half coconut shells, upturned clay pots with a small entrance notch, or crevices formed by stacked wood — are essential: the female will select one for spawning and needs alternative refuges if driven from her first choice. Dim lighting, softened by floating plants, keeps the fish less shy and reduces male-display aggression.

Tankmate selection should be conservative. Apistogramma velifera is small and requires extreme chemistry that limits compatible species. Small blackwater tetras native to the same broad region — green neon tetras (Paracheirodon simulans), which co-occur in the wild, pencilfish, or small hatchetfish — are natural companions and tolerate the same acidic water. Bottom-dwelling competitors or similarly territorial dwarf cichlids should be avoided. Corydoras are generally unsuitable at pH 4.5, though otocinclus species and the tougher blackwater-adapted catfishes (some loricariids) can work. Conspecific males cannot be housed together in most setups; the species follows preferential monogamy rather than harem polygyny, so a single pair per tank, or at most a pair with one additional female in a larger setup, is the practical arrangement.

Sexing is straightforward once fish are adult: males are distinctly larger and develop the diagnostic fused dorsal sail, while females remain smaller and plainer outside breeding condition. Females entering spawning readiness turn a vivid lemon-yellow with bold black facial and lateral markings — one of the sharper colour transformations in the genus. This colour change is a reliable signal that a female is ready. Breeding conditioning with live or frozen foods (daphnia, artemia, bloodworm, mosquito larvae) accelerates readiness. As in all Apistogramma, fry sex ratio is temperature-dependent; lower temperatures bias the clutch toward females, higher toward males, so breeders targeting balanced groups watch the thermometer carefully. The species has a reputation as one of the more demanding pertensis-group apistos to spawn — on a par with Apistogramma nijsseni in its intolerance of shortcuts on water chemistry — and keepers should regard their first successful spawn as a real achievement rather than a baseline expectation.

Conservation

Apistogramma velifera is one of the relatively few dwarf cichlids the IUCN has assessed as threatened: it is listed Vulnerable under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed on 31 July 2020 by Lina Mesa-Salazar and published in the 2022 update. The reasoning is range-based rather than population-based — the population trend is recorded as unknown. The species is known from a small extent of occurrence (about 13,894 km2) and only eight collection records, resolving to roughly five threat-based locations clustered at the Orinoco–Ventuari confluence; GBIF likewise holds only about ten occurrence records, corroborating how thinly the fish is documented. The Colombian portion of its range falls inside a RAMSAR-protected wetland (the Estrella Fluvial de Inírida), and the species occurs in at least one protected area, but the Venezuelan habitat is described in the assessment as facing exponential deterioration of habitat quality, which drives the listing. It is unknown whether velifera is regularly traded as an ornamental; it has never been imported on a steady basis and reaches hobbyists mainly as occasional German-bred stock, so collection pressure is unlikely to be the leading concern. The broader backdrop is the mounting pressure on the upper Orinoco and Guiana-Shield blackwaters — deforestation, gold-mining and its mercury, and shifting land use across the Inírida–Atabapo region — pressures that bear heavily on a narrow-range, water-chemistry-specialist fish that cannot simply move to harder or more turbid water.
