Taxonomy & naming
Aulonocara baenschi was described in 1985 by the German ichthyologists Manfred K. Meyer and Rüdiger Riehl, with the description appearing within the second volume of Hans A. Baensch and Rüdiger Riehl's Aquarien Atlas (Mergus Verlag). The type series was collected on 30 March 1983 by Stuart M. Grant — the legendary Malawi exporter whose fishers supplied much of the lake's described diversity — at Nkhomo, given in the original description as 5 mi west of the village of Benga on the lake's central-western shore. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the holotype as SMF 20041 and fifteen paratypes as SMF 20042-56, all deposited in the Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt. The species was revisited two years later in Meyer, Riehl & Zetzsche's (1987) revision of Aulonocara in the Courier Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg, and Eccles & Trewavas treated it in their 1989 classification of Malawi haplochromines; Ad Konings has maintained it as valid through successive editions of his Malawi work (most recently 2016). No synonyms are listed. The genus Aulonocara Regan, 1922 holds the lake's "peacock" cichlids, a tight assemblage of sand- and intermediate-zone haplochromines diagnosed by greatly enlarged sensory canals and pores on the head. Within that group Aulonocara baenschi sits among the yellow-bodied peacocks closely allied to the Aulonocara stuartgranti complex — a similarity that has caused decades of confusion in the trade, where several unrelated yellow peacocks from Maleri, Chidunga Rocks, Usisya and elsewhere were long sold under the baenschi name.
Morphology
This is a small peacock by Aulonocara standards. FishBase lists a maximum of 5 in total length; field and hobby references following Konings give mature males to about 4.5 in and females to roughly 3.5 in, the usual peacock pattern of males running larger. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed haplochromine form, but the head carries the genus's signature: a system of conspicuously enlarged cephalic sensory pores, the lateral-line canals of the face widened into pits that pick up the movements of buried prey. Sexual dichromatism is pronounced and is the whole basis of the fish's fame and its plight. Dominant, sexually active males are a clean, saturated yellow across the flanks and unpaired fins, the head and face overlaid with iridescent metallic blue, and they hold this nuptial dress year-round rather than only at spawning. Females and subordinate, non-territorial males are far plainer — smaller, silvery-brown and cryptically marked, almost indistinguishable in the field from the females of a sympatric Aulonocara that shares the reef. That overlap matters: only the colored male Aulonocara baenschi is recognizable and targeted by collectors. The most reliable feature separating baenschi from the look-alike yellow members of the stuartgranti complex is the head profile — its snout is notably rounder, steeper and more strongly curved, over a comparatively slender body in wild fish.
Habitat
In the strict sense, Aulonocara baenschi is one of Lake Malawi's narrowest endemics: the IUCN assessment treats it as restricted to a single locality, Nkhomo Reef, a large submerged reef lying a few kilometres offshore opposite the Nkhomo River, near Benga in the central-western lake. Its biotope is classic Aulonocara intermediate habitat — scattered rocks and rare low heaps of rubble standing on an open sandy floor, rather than continuous rock or pure sand. Sources put its core depth at roughly 49–66 ft, with the reef having a general depth near 59 ft and characteristically low water clarity for much of the year; broader aquarium references cite occurrence from about 13 ft down to 52 ft. The water is the warm, hard, strongly alkaline medium typical of Malawi's upper water column: FishBase gives an in-situ temperature range of about 72–79 °F, pH 7.2-8.2, and hardness 10-30 dH. A crucial caveat runs through every range statement for this fish: FishBase and some hobby accounts also list Chipoka, the Maleri Islands and Usisya, but malawi.si and Konings regard those as misidentified, separate yellow-peacock populations rather than true Aulonocara baenschi. The conservatively defined, single-reef distribution is the one the Red List assessment rests on, and it is the reason the species is so vulnerable.
Feeding
Aulonocara baenschi is a sand-sifting invertivore, the foraging mode that defines the peacock radiation. It hovers just above open sand and waits, the enlarged sensory pores on its head registering the tiny vibrations of invertebrates moving within the substrate; when prey is detected the fish darts down and takes a mouthful of sand, sifting out edible items and expelling the spent grains through the gills and mouth. FishBase records the diet simply as bottom-dwelling invertebrates and places the species around trophic level 3.5; the IUCN account specifies small invertebrates living in the sand, located with the aid of the cephalic pores. This is fundamentally a benthic hunter rather than an algae grazer — it works the soft sediment between and around the scattered rocks of its reef, a role that ties it to clean, invertebrate-rich sand. In captivity that translates to a need for a fine sand bed (coarse gravel inhibits the sifting behaviour and can damage the gills) and a varied diet of fine prepared foods plus small live or frozen invertebrates such as chironomid larvae and brine shrimp.
Mating
Like all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Aulonocara baenschi is polygynous and lek-like in its social organization, with no pair bond. Males in permanent nuptial colour establish and defend small territories, each centred on an excavated cave or pit dug beneath or beside the scattered rocks of the reef; the IUCN field account notes that, given the reef's structure, essentially all spawning sites sit at the bottom level rather than among rare heaps of rock. Females are not territorial and occur singly or in small loose groups, moving across the sand and visiting males' territories. A ripe female approaches a displaying male at his site, and courtship is brief and conventional for the genus. Because males are colored throughout the year rather than seasonally, the lek is effectively always active — a behaviour that, combined with the species' confinement to one reef, makes the conspicuous males easy targets for collectors over a long season. In aquaria males can be pugnacious toward rivals and toward any similarly patterned fish, so the standard recommendation is to keep a single male with several females.
Breeding
Aulonocara baenschi is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder, as confirmed by FishBase and detailed in hobby literature. After the male's courtship draws a willing female to his spawning site, she deposits a small batch of eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth; she is then drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin and, in attempting to gather these "eggs," takes in milt that fertilizes the clutch already in her buccal cavity. Aulonocara clutches are modest — typically a few dozen eggs in this size class of peacock — and the female broods them in her mouth for roughly four weeks, ceasing to feed for most of that period, before releasing fully free-swimming fry. The fry may still carry some yolk at release and can take brine shrimp nauplii once it is absorbed; they begin to show sex around four months. There is no biparental care and no further parental investment after the brooding female releases her young. The species has proved straightforward and prolific in captivity, which is precisely why captive-bred stock now dominates the trade — and why deliberate, hatchery-based breeding has become central to attempts to save the wild population (see Conservation).
In the aquarium
Aulonocara baenschi is among the most widely kept and bred peacock cichlids in the hobby, and the captive-bred form sold as the "Benga peacock" or "Sunshine peacock" is what almost every keeper actually encounters — genuine wild-collected fish from Nkhomo Reef essentially do not enter the trade any longer, nor should they given the species' Critically Endangered status. That ubiquity has a cost worth naming: generations of selective breeding and, particularly, hybridization with other yellow peacocks have produced line-bred strains whose color is enhanced but whose genetics are muddled. A keeper who wants the real thing should source fish from a reputable specialist breeder who keeps records and avoids mixing species. The "all-male tank" configuration popular in North American fishrooms — where several unrelated, visually distinct peacocks and haplochromines are kept together without females — often includes Aulonocara baenschi. This can work, but it increases hybridization risk if females are later introduced, and the males compete more intensely than their peaceable reputation suggests.
A single colony of one male with three or four females is the more natural arrangement and the one recommended for serious breeding efforts. Because males are permanently in nuptial colour and perpetually willing to spawn, they will harass unreceptive females relentlessly in a tank that offers no escape; a footprint of at least 47 in (roughly 40–55 US gal net) is the workable minimum, and larger is better. Generous open swimming space should be combined with a fine, deep sand substrate — at least 2 in — and a background of stacked rock providing broken sightlines and bolt holes. Aulonocara baenschi does not require or naturally use dense planting, and most hobbyists omit plants to maintain the alkaline hardness its water demands; if plants are kept, Vallisneria and Anubias tolerate these conditions.
Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's upper column: temperature 73–79 °F, pH 7.8–8.5, and moderate to hard general hardness (10–20 °dH is a reasonable target). The fish is not demanding about exact numbers within that window, but prolonged exposure to soft or acidic water causes chronic health problems. Regular partial water changes of 20–30 % weekly are important because the nitrate load that builds in a Lake Malawi setup stresses the fish even when ammonia and nitrite remain undetectable. Filtration should be robust; the species is not a strong current-lover but tolerates gentle flow from a sump or canister turnover.
Diet in captivity is straightforward: a high-quality cichlid pellet or flake as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live chironomid larvae (bloodworm), brine shrimp, and daphnia. Sand-sifting behaviour is readily displayed over a fine bed, and providing occasional live foods encourages the species' characteristic hovering-and-dart feeding style. Avoid foods with high animal-fat content; fatty diets predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat. Spirulina-enriched foods are a sensible regular addition.
Breeding is uncomplicated and usually occurs without any deliberate intervention from the keeper. The male cleans a spawning pit in the sand, displays to the female, and the pair follows the standard haplochromine ovophilous mouthbrooder routine; the female broods the clutch for approximately four weeks, barely eating. A common keeper mistake is stripping or netting the brooding female too early, either out of concern for her condition or eagerness to raise fry separately. She can be left to brood in the community tank if the tank is large and the tankmates are not predatory; alternatively she can be moved to a dedicated holding tank once she is clearly carrying a full buccal pouch. Fry released at full term are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii immediately. A second common error is keeping too many males together: even in large tanks, two or more males of similar or related peacock species will spend energy fighting and may wound each other seriously.
Conservation
Aulonocara baenschi is assessed as Critically Endangered (B1ab(v)+2ab(v)) on the IUCN Red List, assessed 22 May 2018 by Ad Konings (errata version published 2019; reviewed by G.Z. Kanyerere, T.B. Phiri and J. Snoeks), a sharp downgrade from its 2006 listing of Least Concern. The basis is stark: a single known location (Nkhomo Reef) with an estimated extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of just 2 mi², and a documented, ongoing collapse driven almost entirely by the ornamental fish trade. Where 50 to 100 colored males could be seen on a single 30-minute dive in the mid-1990s, a 2006 survey found only a very small number; the assessment estimates a population reduction exceeding 70% in the decade to 2006, and a further ~70% reduction since 2008, driving the remaining wild population toward extinction. Tellingly, a sympatric Aulonocara that shares the reef and whose drab females are nearly identical has not declined — because only the recognizable yellow male baenschi is worth collecting. The fish carries no CITES listing. There is, however, an active conservation response: captive-bred individuals are being raised locally at Chipoka and used to restock the reef, with the first reintroduction in October 2017, and continued population monitoring is recommended. It is too early to know whether the restocking has re-established a self-sustaining population. The species stands as one of the clearest cases in the lake of a cichlid pushed to the brink by aquarium demand for a single, beautiful colour morph.
