The Nkhata Bay population
The Nkhata Bay Peacock is a location variant of Aulonocara stuartgranti collected from the western shore of Lake Malawi near Nkhata Bay, a port town and dive hub in Nkhata Bay District, Malawi, at roughly 11°36' S. Males display warm orange-yellow to orange flanks contrasted by a luminous metallic blue head — a coloration pattern consistent with other mid-western shore populations of the species and recognisable enough to be tracked as a distinct trade line. Because Nkhata Bay is one of the principal ornamental-fish collection and export points on the Malawian side of the lake, this form reaches the hobby with reasonable regularity, giving it broader commercial visibility than many stuartgranti variants tied to more remote collection sites.

About the species
Aulonocara stuartgranti, known in the hobby as Grant's peacock, is a maternal mouthbrooding cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi and one of the most familiar faces in the African-cichlid hobby. It is the archetypal "peacock": a sand-and-rock fish that hovers a few millimeters above the bottom and detects buried invertebrates with the enlarged lateral-line canals pitting its lower jaw — a sixth-sense feeding system confirmed in the lab on this very species. Across the lake it splits into dozens of vividly distinct geographic colour forms, from the orange-tailed Ngara "flametail" to the blue Usisya and Cobue, which is exactly why it is both beloved and a perennial hybridization headache for keepers.
