Benitochromis conjunctus is the smallest of the chromidotilapiine cichlids in its genus, a slender, modestly coloured fish that lives in the small forest streams and creeks draining Mount Cameroon and the middle Mungo system of southwestern Cameroon. Despite its plain looks it has one of the more unusual breeding biologies in West African cichlids: a pair lays its eggs out in the open on a cleaned surface, then — after a deliberate pause — gathers them up to mouthbrood, with both parents taking turns carrying the developing young. Endemic to a single small drainage and assessed as Endangered, it is a fish whose entire world is a handful of rainforest streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Benitochromis conjunctus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Anton Lamboj in 2001, in his revision of the Chromidotilapia batesii/finleyi complex (Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft für Ichthyologie 2:11-47). That paper did two things at once: it erected the new genus Benitochromis for a cluster of small biparental mouthbrooders that had been languishing inside Chromidotilapia, and it named three new species within it, of which conjunctus was one. The genus name honours the Benito River of Equatorial Guinea, the type locality of the type species Benitochromis batesii, joined to chromis, the ancient Greek fish-name (originally a drum, Sciaenidae) that ichthyologists have long recycled into African cichlid genera. The species epithet conjunctus is Latin for 'joined' or 'meeting together', and it is unusually literal: Lamboj coined it for the way two horizontal dark bands run together with the vertical bars across the middle of a stressed fish's flank, the pattern that most reliably tells the species apart from its congeners. The holotype, an adult collected in the Mungo drainage near Muyuka in Cameroon, is held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren (RMCA/MRAC 1999.031.P.0018), with paratype series at the same museum and at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien; the nomenclatural act is registered in ZooBank. Within the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, Benitochromis sits in the tribe Chromidotilapiini, the West African 'dwarf' mouthbrooders that also include Chromidotilapia, Pelvicachromis and Benitochromis's nearest relatives. The genus holds roughly half a dozen species; conjunctus is the smallest of them.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid — FishBase records a maximum of about 3 in standard length, and aquarium fish typically settle at 2.5–3 in, making conjunctus the most diminutive member of an already small-bodied genus. The body is the moderately elongate, laterally compressed shape typical of stream-dwelling chromidotilapiines, carried on a fin count of 14-16 dorsal spines and 9-11 soft rays, with three anal spines and 6-8 anal soft rays. Coloration is restrained rather than showy: a brownish to grey-olive ground, often with a faint sheen, that brightens somewhat in breeding condition. Lamboj's diagnosis leans on subtle, mostly negative characters that separate conjunctus from its congeners — the dorsal-fin membrane is pale and lacks the dense black band seen in some relatives such as Benitochromis nigrodorsalis, and the flanks carry no strongly marked vertical bars. The most useful field mark is in the males, which show rows of small dark spots (maculae) scattered across the whole caudal-fin membrane, and the diagnostic stress pattern from which the fish takes its name: two longitudinal bands that conjoin with the body bars across the mid-flank. Sexual dimorphism is genuinely slight — there is no dramatic size or colour difference between the sexes — and hobbyists report that confidently sexing the fish outside of spawning is difficult, with the male's caudal spotting and slightly larger size being the most reliable cues.

Habitat

Benitochromis conjunctus is a narrow endemic of southwestern Cameroon, recorded from the small rivers and creeks that drain the flanks of Mount Cameroon and from the middle reaches of the Mungo River system. The Mungo is a coastal rainforest river, and the species' world is the smaller water of that basin — shaded, still to slowly-flowing forest streams and creeks, often heavily vegetated and floored with leaf litter, sand and woody debris. These are soft, warm, near-neutral to slightly acidic waters; FishBase carries a habitat pH band of roughly 6.0-7.0, consistent with the tannin-stained, low-mineral runoff of a lowland equatorial forest. No depth range has been formally published for the species, which is unsurprising for a small fish of shallow creeks; the documented habitat is shallow stream and creek water rather than any deep lacustrine zone, so a band on the order of 0–7 ft is the defensible, genus- and habitat-typical figure used here, flagged as inferred rather than measured. In-situ water temperature in these forest streams runs in the mid-20s Celsius; keepers and the CARES preservation program maintain the species at about 82 °F and pH 6.5, within the range the wild habitat would supply. The combination of a tiny range, a single drainage, and dependence on intact forest streams is exactly the profile that makes the species vulnerable.

Feeding

Like the other Benitochromis, conjunctus is a small, generalist bottom-oriented omnivore rather than any kind of trophic specialist. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, and the genus is consistently characterised as detritivorous and omnivorous substrate-pickers — fish that work over the leaf litter, sand and biofilm of the stream bed, taking small invertebrates, larvae, micro-crustaceans and the organic detritus and algal material that collects among submerged wood and leaves. In a shaded forest creek that diet means a steady picking-through of the bottom rather than active pursuit of prey, and in the community these little cichlids occupy the role of unobtrusive benthic foragers. Captive fish confirm the generalist palate, taking prepared flake and small pellets readily and relishing live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworm; the only consistent advice from keepers is to keep the food small to suit a fish of this size.

Mating

Benitochromis conjunctus is a pair-bonding cichlid: reproduction is organised around a stable monogamous pair rather than a harem or a lek, and both members of the pair share in territory defence and parental duty. This biparental social structure is the hallmark of the genus and sets it apart from the many maternal-only mouthbrooders of the African rift lakes. A pair forms, clears and defends a small spawning territory centred on a chosen surface, and the comparatively muted aggression of the species — keepers describe it as peaceful by cichlid standards, suited to a quiet species or community tank rather than a rough African setup — means that pairs can be kept without the carnage common among larger cichlids. As with most pair-bonding cichlids the most delicate moment is pair formation itself, and the usual hobbyist approach is to raise a small group and let a compatible pair sort itself out before removing or partitioning the surplus fish.

Breeding

The breeding mode is the most interesting thing about this otherwise plain fish, and it is worth stating precisely because it is easy to get wrong. Benitochromis conjunctus is not a cave spawner and not a maternal mouthbrooder. It is a pair-bonding, ovophilic (egg-carrying) mouthbrooder with delayed uptake: the pair first spawns in the open, laying the eggs on a cleaned solid surface where they are tended for a period, and only then are the eggs taken into the mouth to be brooded — the 'delayed uptake' that distinguishes Benitochromis from cichlids that mouth the eggs immediately. Brooding is biparental: both parents participate in carrying and protecting the clutch, typically trading the mouthful between them, and after release the free-swimming fry continue to be guarded by the pair and shelter back in a parent's mouth when threatened. Clutch sizes are small, in keeping with the fish's size and with FishBase's 'fewer than 1000 eggs' fecundity bracket — broods on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred eggs are typical of the small chromidotilapiines, the figure stated here as a genus-typical estimate since no precise published count for conjunctus was located. The delayed, biparental, open-then-mouthbrooding strategy is uncommon enough that the species is prized by the specialists who keep it; the CARES program that maintains it reports successful breeding at around 82 °F and pH 6.5 on a varied diet. (One widely-copied online care sheet describes the species as a 'maternal mouthbrooder' depositing eggs that the female alone carries for three weeks — this contradicts the original description and FishBase, which document biparental care, and should be disregarded.)

In the aquarium

Benitochromis conjunctus is an uncommon fish in the hobby — it surfaces occasionally through specialist importers and CARES preservation holders, but it is rarely found at general tropical-fish retailers, and keepers should expect to search for it. That scarcity is partly a reflection of the species' modest visual appeal by the standards of the African cichlid market, and partly of its sensitivity: this is not a fish that forgives the lapses in water quality that a hardier West African cichlid like a Pelvicachromis might shrug off. For the keeper who values behaviour over colour and is prepared to meet the water requirements, however, it is rewarding and unusual.

A pair can be comfortably housed in a 20–25 US gal (roughly 80 × 15.5 in footprint) tank, though a slightly larger tank gives more flexibility if tankmates are included. The priority is water chemistry: the species comes from soft, slightly acidic lowland forest streams, and the parameters that match both its wild habitat and the captive conditions under which breeding has been documented are a pH of 6.0–7.0 and a temperature of 75–82 °F, with soft to moderately soft water (general hardness below about 10 °dH is preferable, and lower is better). Hard, alkaline water from the tap should be conditioned — RO water blended with tap, or peat filtration, are the typical approaches used for West African river cichlids. A reliable, well-matured filter, frequent small water changes and the absence of accumulated nitrates are more important than elaborate chemistry; the species does not tolerate neglect. Tannin-stained or lightly coloured water suits it and probably reduces stress.

Decor should reflect the forest-creek origin: a dark, fine substrate of sand or fine gravel, a scatter of dried leaves and small pieces of driftwood or bogwood, and low to moderate lighting. The fish spend most of their time in the lower and middle water column, picking over the bottom, and they appreciate hiding spots — small caves (a smooth stone with a gap beneath it, a coconut half, or a small ceramic cave) give the pair retreat options and potential spawning sites. Dense planting is beneficial if the light budget permits but is not essential; low-light-tolerant plants such as Anubias or Java fern attached to wood work well in the tannin-stained conditions. Avoid strong current: these are fish of quiet, slow streams, not fast-flowing water.

For tankmates, calm, similarly-sized fish that share the same chemistry requirements are the sensible choice — other small West African river cichlids (Pelvicachromis species), small tetras or barbs from soft-water biotopes, or peaceful bottom-dwellers such as small Corydoras all work in principle. Benitochromis conjunctus is peaceful by cichlid standards outside of spawning, but a breeding pair will defend a territory and should not be crowded with fish that push back aggressively or compete for the same bottom space. Large, boisterous cichlids are incompatible; anything fast and nippy enough to harass a small, deliberate fish is best avoided. A species or quiet community tank is a safer bet than an active African cichlid community. Many keepers maintain a pair alone or with a small group of dithers for simplicity.

Common keeper mistakes include keeping the species in hard, alkaline water suited to Malawi or Tanganyika cichlids; underestimating the fish's sensitivity to nitrate accumulation and inconsistent maintenance; and attempting to sex fish outside of breeding condition, where the cues are subtle and misidentification of a male-male pair is easy. The biparental mouthbrooding mode — open-substrate spawning followed by delayed uptake of the eggs into the mouth, with both parents sharing carrying duties — means that a keeper unfamiliar with the species may be confused to see eggs laid out on a flat stone and untouched for a time before being collected; this is normal behaviour and not a sign of failed spawning. Broods are small, fry are tiny, and the pair guards them actively after release. Difficulty should be rated as intermediate: not demanding in the way of a specialist biotope fish, but not a beginner's species, and worth more care and research than the average community fish.

Conservation

Benitochromis conjunctus is assessed by the IUCN as Endangered (EN, criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), a status driven entirely by its tiny range: assessed on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010, the listing reflects a species confined to a single small drainage system with a very restricted extent of occurrence, where the continuing decline of its forest-stream habitat is the central threat. This is worth flagging against a common misconception — the species is not a 'least concern' wide-ranging fish but a genuinely threatened narrow endemic, and the same Endangered status is carried in the CEPF Guinean Forests of West Africa ecosystem profile, which lists conjunctus among the restricted-range fishes of the hotspot. The pressures are the familiar ones bearing down on the coastal rainforests of southwestern Cameroon: deforestation and the conversion of land to agriculture (the lower Mungo basin sits in a region of intensive plantation development), siltation and pollution of the small streams the fish depends on, and the general degradation of forest-stream water quality and cover. A fish whose entire distribution is a few creeks around one mountain has no refuge if those creeks are degraded, and that — far more than any collection for the aquarium trade, which is minimal for so obscure a species — is what places it on the Red List. Its conservation is, in effect, inseparable from the conservation of the Cameroonian coastal forest itself.
