Benitochromis riomuniensis is a small, unflashy cichlid from the coastal rivers of southwestern Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, a fish that hides a remarkable secret behind its plain brown coat: it is a biparental mouthbrooder in which the male and female take turns carrying the brood, passing the clutch of eggs and fry back and forth from mouth to mouth several times a day. Known to science only since 1981 and confined to a handful of streams in the Lower Guinea forest belt, it is one of the rarer and more narrowly distributed members of its genus — and one that the IUCN already rates as Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described in 1981 by the Belgian ichthyologist Dirk F. E. Thys van den Audenaerde, in a popular-format work on West African cichlids edited by Horst Linke and Wolfgang Staeck (Afrikanische Cichliden I: Buntbarsche aus Westafrika). It was originally placed in the dwarf-cichlid genus Nanochromis, as Nanochromis riomuniensis — a poor fit, as later workers recognized. The type material came from the Río Muni region of Equatorial Guinea; the holotype (MRAC 173290) and a paratype (MRAC 173297) are held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium. In 2001 the Austrian cichlid specialist Anton Lamboj revised the Chromidotilapia batesii/finleyi species complex and erected a new genus, Benitochromis — named for the Benito (Mbini) River of Equatorial Guinea, type locality of the genus's type species, Benitochromis batesii — into which riomuniensis was transferred. The valid name today, recognized by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase, is therefore Benitochromis riomuniensis (Thys van den Audenaerde, 1981), the parentheses marking the move out of the original genus. (An earlier hint that the species was described by Lamboj in 2001 conflates the describer of the species with the author of the genus — Lamboj named Benitochromis and several of its species, but riomuniensis predates his work by two decades.) The genus belongs to the chromidotilapiine cichlids of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and currently holds roughly half a dozen species — batesii, finleyi, conjunctus, nigrodorsalis, ufermanni and riomuniensis — several of which still reach hobbyists mislabelled as Chromidotilapia finleyi or batesii. The fish has no established common name; the scientific name is what is used in the hobby, and trade shipments are usually tagged by collection locality (for example "Bidou" or "Lobe") rather than by any vernacular.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. Lamboj's revision gives a maximum standard length of about 3 in (roughly 3 in SL), and that figure — measured from snout to the base of the tail, excluding the caudal fin — is the one carried by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes. Hobby and retail sources routinely quote "4–5 inches" (about 4–4.5 in), but those almost certainly refer to total length including the tail, or simply overstate the size of well-fed aquarium adults; the scientific maximum is the more reliable number, and even generously kept fish stay modest. The body is moderately deep (body depth about 30–37% of standard length) and the head fairly large (about 34–38% of SL), with a rounded caudal fin in both sexes and some of the soft dorsal and anal rays drawn out into short trailing tips. Coloration is understated: the body is brown, paler on the belly, normally without flank markings, though a stressed fish may briefly show two horizontal bands. The dorsal fin and the upper edge of the tail carry a red margin. The fin counts run to 15–16 dorsal spines, 9–10 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 6–8 anal soft rays. Unlike its more colorful relatives, riomuniensis lacks blue iridescence on the cheeks and gill covers and never shows a dense black band in the dorsal membrane — a useful way to separate it from look-alike congeners. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle. Ripe females are the more colorful sex: they develop a chrome-yellow, iridescent patch in the soft dorsal fin (sometimes extending into the upper third of the tail) and a bright rosy flush on the belly. Males are larger, usually lack the yellow dorsal patch (or show it only as a thin submargin), have dark margins on the body scales, and carry rows of dark-to-reddish spots across the tail that never spread over the entire fin. Juveniles, and sometimes adults, wear a black "tilapia spot" at the front of the soft dorsal, and the lower lip and throat are washed with yellow — the feature that prompted one importer to suggest the trade nickname "Golden Throated King Cichlid."

Habitat

Benitochromis riomuniensis is an endemic of the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province — the band of short coastal rivers draining the Atlantic slope of west-central Africa. Its confirmed range spans southwestern Cameroon, including the Lokoundje and Kienke (Kribi) systems and the lower Ntem, and adjacent Equatorial Guinea, where the Río Muni gives the fish its name. Some hobby and checklist sources extend the genus toward Gabon, but the Gabon record for this species is listed only as "possible"; the authoritative range, per both the Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN, is Cameroon plus Equatorial Guinea, and the IUCN assessment knew it from just four localities. These are forest streams and small rivers rather than lakes — soft, warm, often tannin-stained coastal waters running over sand and leaf litter, shaded by gallery forest. Photographs of wild fish from a tributary of the Lobe River near Kribi show exactly this kind of clear-to-blackwater, plant-fringed habitat. No detailed in-situ water chemistry has been published for the species specifically; the values used here are typical of its coastal-stream habitat and of how the fish is kept — soft, acidic to near-neutral water around pH 6–7.5 and temperatures of roughly 75–81 °F — and should be read as habitat-typical estimates rather than measured field data. Likewise no formal depth range is recorded; as a demersal fish of shallow forest streams it lives essentially at the bottom in the upper metre or two of the water column, the shallow band given in the fact box, again as a habitat-based estimate rather than a published figure.

Feeding

Like most chromidotilapiines, riomuniensis is a small benthic micropredator and opportunistic omnivore rather than a specialist. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3, the level of a fish that earns most of its living from animal prey. In the wild it works the stream bed for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, supplemented by the algae, biofilm and bits of plant material it picks up while foraging over sand and leaf litter. In aquaria it is undemanding and quick to feed: keepers report wild-collected fish fattening readily on live blackworm and frozen foods, and the species also takes flake and pellet without fuss. In the stream community it occupies the generalist invertebrate-feeder niche typical of small forest cichlids, neither a top predator nor a dedicated grazer.

Mating

Benitochromis are pair-bonding cichlids, and that monogamous bond is the organizing fact of their social life. Outside breeding the fish are relatively peaceful toward other species; the friction is intraspecific. Keepers of the genus consistently report that, while a settled pair is not especially aggressive toward tankmates, individuals can be sharply nasty to their own kind, and an unpaired or mismatched fish may be harassed. Pairs form from a group as fish mature, and a bonded male and female together hold and defend a territory. Comparison with the closely related, better-documented congeners (Benitochromis nigrodorsalis in particular) suggests a courtship of mutual displays at a chosen spawning site — typically an open, cleaned surface such as a flat stone, a leaf or the side of a cave — leading up to the spawning itself. Because so little has been published on riomuniensis specifically, much of the fine detail of its courtship is inferred from these close relatives and labelled as such; what is well established is the pair bond and the shared, cooperative defense of the brood that follows.

Breeding

The breeding biology is where this otherwise plain fish becomes genuinely interesting. Benitochromis riomuniensis is a biparental, ovophilic mouthbrooder with delayed uptake: the pair spawns on an open substrate, and the eggs are taken up into the mouth shortly after — not immediately at the moment of laying, hence "delayed" — and from then on both parents share the brooding. This is unusual. Many African cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders in which the female alone carries the eggs; Benitochromis instead pass the clutch of eggs and, later, the wriggling larvae from one parent's mouth to the other's, several times a day. Observers of the genus (Lamboj's 2004 account in The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa is the standard reference) describe the parents facing each other head-on, one jerking its head and fluttering its pectoral fins to propel the clutch into the partner's open mouth; inexperienced pairs can take hours to complete a transfer that practised pairs manage in seconds. Clutches are modest in keeping with the fish's small size — on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred or so eggs, in line with its close relatives, rather than the hundreds a large substrate-spawner produces. The young are free-swimming in a little under a fortnight and are then guarded by both parents for up to a couple of months, the adults often gathering the fry back into the mouth at night or at any sign of danger. (Within the genus the strategy varies: Benitochromis batesii spawns in caves and is a larvophilic mouthbrooder that takes up larvae rather than eggs, and in Benitochromis ufermanni only the female broods — riomuniensis sits with the open-substrate, biparental, egg-brooding species.) This makes it a rewarding fish to breed for keepers willing to give a pair the space and stability it needs, though wild stock and its conservation status mean it is not a casual project.

In the aquarium

Benitochromis riomuniensis is not a beginner's fish and is rarely encountered in the trade. When it does appear — usually from specialist West African importers, occasionally as captive-bred stock — it rewards patient keepers who understand what a narrow-range forest-stream cichlid actually needs. A pair can be housed in a tank of around 35.5–39.5 in (roughly 25–30 US gal), though more space is always welcome; the species is small, but a breeding pair will stake and defend a territory, and extra room reduces tension if other fish are present. Taller tanks are a reasonable choice given that the fish lives at the bottom of shallow, well-shaded streams, but the classic rectangular footprint works perfectly well.

Water chemistry must mirror the species' origin. Benitochromis riomuniensis comes from soft, slightly acidic coastal rivers in the Lower Guinea forest belt — the kind of water that runs over leaf litter under closed-canopy gallery forest, often tea-coloured with tannins. In the aquarium, pH in the range of 6.0–7.0 is appropriate, with low to moderate hardness; neutral or harder water appears to stress the species and may suppress breeding. Temperature should be held between 24 and 81 °F. This is not a fish that tolerates neglect: it is sensitive to elevated nitrates and ammonia, and regular partial water changes (not large infrequent ones, which cause chemical swings) are essential. Filtration should be efficient but gentle — powerful flow is inconsistent with its shallow, slow-moving stream habitat.

The decor should reflect that habitat. A soft sand substrate is preferable to gravel, as the fish often picks at the bottom. Driftwood, submerged leaf litter, and flat stones provide cover and break up sightlines; flat stones or broad-leaved botanicals give the pair candidate spawning surfaces. Live plants are beneficial and help buffer water quality, though soft-water species (Microsorum, Cryptocoryne, floating plants for shade) suit the chemistry better than hard-water types. Dim lighting, or shading from surface plants, reduces stress and encourages natural behaviour. A tight-fitting lid matters: like many cichlids, riomuniensis will jump when startled.

Choosing tankmates requires care. Other Benitochromis and con-generic cichlids are best avoided unless the tank is large enough to support multiple territories, because the pair bond is reinforced partly by mutual aggression toward rivals. Peaceful, similarly sized West African fish that occupy different water levels — small tetras, rheophilic loaches, or schooling barbs from comparable chemistries — are more compatible choices. Boisterous or fin-nipping species are unsuitable. As a general rule, keep the tank community simple and the bioload low; this species pays the price for overcrowding and poor water quality more quickly than hardier cichlids.

Breeding in captivity follows the biparental mouthbrooding strategy described in the Breeding section and is achievable for keepers who provide stable, soft-water conditions and a settled, unharassed pair. The critical keeper mistake is misinterpreting the egg-transfer behaviour — the pair will repeatedly take eggs from each other's mouths, and inexperienced owners sometimes panic, thinking the fish are eating the clutch. They are not; the mouth-to-mouth pass is the brooding mechanism. Interfering at this stage typically destroys the brood. A second common mistake is conducting large water changes after spawning, which can stress the brooding fish enough to cause them to swallow the clutch. Stability — not perfection, but consistency — is what this fish needs once eggs are taken up. Because wild-caught riomuniensis is an Endangered species with a small natural range, hobbyists keeping it carry a real, if modest, conservation responsibility: maintaining a line of captive-bred fish and exchanging surplus juveniles within the specialist community is more than a hobby nicety.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Benitochromis riomuniensis as Endangered (criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), in an assessment completed on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010; the listing carries a "needs updating" flag, so the category is now well over a decade old. The Endangered rating rests on the species' tiny range: it is a Lower Guinea endemic known from only about four localities, with both its extent of occurrence and its area of occupancy small enough to qualify, and a habitat in documented decline. The specific threats the assessors identified are local and concrete. In the Fifinda region, "barrage" fishing — damming or screening off stretches of stream to harvest fish — causes sedimentation and loss of habitat (the problem is the physical disturbance, not overfishing of this particular cichlid). The lower Ntem population, meanwhile, lies in the path of a planned deep-water river port and an associated iron-ore mine, whose infrastructure would degrade the river. These pressures sit within the wider squeeze on Lower Guinea's coastal rivers, where expanding agriculture, logging, road-building and resource extraction load the water with sediment and erode the shaded, leaf-littered forest streams that small endemic cichlids like this one depend on. The species carries no CITES listing and is not commercially important as food; it reaches the ornamental trade only in small numbers, both wild-caught and captive-bred. For a narrow-range forest endemic, that limited collection is a minor concern next to habitat loss — and a well-managed aquarium population is, if anything, a hedge. Given the age of the assessment and the pace of development in coastal Cameroon, the listing is best read as a floor on concern rather than the last word.
