Taxonomy & naming
Biotoecus dicentrarchus was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1989, in a Journal of Natural History paper (volume 23, pages 225-260) whose subtitle tells the whole story: a description of a new species from the Orinoco basin together with a revised generic diagnosis. The genus Biotoecus had been erected by Eigenmann and Kennedy in 1903 and had held a single, poorly understood species, Biotoecus opercularis (Steindachner, 1875) from the Amazon; Kullander's work both added the second species and finally pinned down what the genus actually was. The type locality is Caño Alisal, a small tributary of the Río Bita a few kilometres south of Puerto Carreño in Vichada, Colombia, and the holotype is lodged in the Instituto de Ciencias Naturales of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá (ICNMHN 1400), with paratype series in Chicago's Field Museum (FMNH) and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM). Within the American cichlid subfamily Cichlinae the genus sits among the geophagines, the eartheater lineage, though it is a small, atypical offshoot rather than a sand-sifter in the classic mould. A persistent spelling slip is worth flagging: several regional checklists (Lasso & Machado-Allison) render the genus 'Biotecus', but the correct original spelling is Biotoecus. The species has no established English common name; in the trade it is sold simply under its scientific name or, occasionally, by point of origin.
Morphology
This is a tiny fish. FishBase gives a maximum of 1.5 in standard length, and wild adults are routinely smaller still — keepers receiving imports describe pairs of 1 in. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, the colours soft and pastel: a pale tan-to-grey ground broken by a row of dark blotches along the midline and an iridescent sheen that flushes blue, green or violet under good light, especially in displaying males. The single most reliable diagnostic character is also the source of the species' name: the anal fin bears only two spines, a count unique among cichlids, which otherwise carry three or more (and some far more). Fin counts run to roughly seven or eight dorsal spines and fourteen to sixteen soft rays. Separating Biotoecus dicentrarchus from its Amazonian sister Biotoecus opercularis in life is, fortunately, easier than the subtle osteological differences (lateral-line canal fragments, spot counts) used in the formal diagnosis: in Biotoecus dicentrarchus the front rays of the dorsal fin are drawn out into free, elongated tips that give the fin a ragged, 'cockatoo'-like crest, whereas in Biotoecus opercularis the dorsal rays are all of roughly even length. Sexual dimorphism is present but understated, in the typical dwarf-cichlid pattern — males grow slightly larger and develop the longer, more produced finnage and more intense display colour, while ripe females are rounder-bodied; the difference is subtle enough that sexing small or unconditioned fish is genuinely difficult.
Habitat
Biotoecus dicentrarchus is restricted to the Orinoco River basin, recorded from the Inírida River in Colombia eastward and downstream to around Maripa in Venezuela, spanning the upper and middle Orinoco drainage across both countries. It is a fish of small, marginal waters rather than the main river channel. The original description's type-locality notes paint an unusually concrete picture of its habitat: a shallow laguna roughly 25 metres wide, with clear, transparent water and emergent needlegrass-like vegetation, where the cichlid lived alongside — and was outnumbered by — the checkerboard dwarf Crenicara filamentosum. A striking detail from that account is the recorded water temperature of 93 °F, very warm even by lowland tropical standards and a reminder that these are shallow, sun-warmed habitats. In-situ pH and hardness were not reported in the description; the genus is, however, consistently associated with soft, acidic, often humic ('blackwater') conditions, and field-derived keeping accounts converge on warm water in the high 20s with a low pH and tannin-stained chemistry. The depth figure here is necessarily a defensible inference rather than a published measurement: as an inhabitant of shallow lagunas and stream margins it occupies roughly the top metre or two of the water column (flagged as habitat-typical, not a measured range). Soft acidic water and a fine sand bottom are the constants that every source — scientific and hobby alike — agrees on.
Feeding
No dedicated gut-content or trophic study of Biotoecus dicentrarchus has been published, so its diet is reconstructed from its anatomy, its congener, and aquarium observation. FishBase places it at a modelled trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a small carnivore rather than a herbivore or detritivore. In practice it behaves as a micro-predator: a picker of small benthic and interstitial invertebrates — chironomid (midge) larvae, microcrustaceans, and other tiny prey sifted from sand, leaf litter and biofilm. The small, slightly underslung mouth and the fish's habit of working close to the substrate fit this picking-and-sifting style. In captivity it accepts and thrives on small live and frozen foods — black mosquito (chironomid) larvae, Daphnia, newly hatched and adult brine shrimp — and keepers consistently report that it does poorly on dry food alone, which fits the picture of a specialist micro-invertebrate feeder rather than an opportunistic generalist.
Mating
Biotoecus dicentrarchus forms pairs and, like most dwarf cichlids, reorganises around a defended breeding site when in spawning condition. The pair bond is the centre of its social life: a male and female jointly hold and defend a small territory around the chosen spawning cavity. It is a peaceable, even timid fish by cichlid standards — far more likely to retreat than to bully — and that shyness is the dominant theme of every keeping account. Stress, not aggression, is the limiting factor; the species is notorious for being sensitive to disturbance, poor water quality and boisterous tankmates. Courtship and pair maintenance involve the soft-coloured display flushes and finnage-spreading typical of the group, the produced dorsal-fin tips presumably playing a part in signalling. Detailed ethological observations of its reproductive behaviour in captivity were compiled by Römer, Fels and Leiwes (2015), one of the very few studies to document the live biology of the genus at all.
Breeding
The species is a biparental cave spawner. The eggs are attached to the ceiling of a small cave or crevice rather than laid in the open, and the female takes the lead in tending them and the subsequent yolk-sac larvae, while both parents share defence and guidance of the free-swimming fry once they emerge — the standard 'cave-brooding with biparental fry care' pattern of many small Neotropical cichlids. Its Amazonian congener Biotoecus opercularis is well known for building small 'castles' of sand around the spawning site, and Biotoecus dicentrarchus shows the same affinity for a fine sand substrate and a sheltered cavity (a crevice, a half-buried shell, an inverted pot). Published clutch sizes for this species specifically are not available; as a sub-1.5 in dwarf cichlid it lays a correspondingly small clutch — on the order of a few dozen eggs, in line with similarly sized cave-spawning dwarfs (flagged as a genus-typical estimate, not a measured count for this species). FishBase's resilience model, which assumes a fecundity below 1,000 eggs, is consistent with that. The practical bottleneck in captivity is not getting eggs but keeping fry alive: the species' stress-sensitivity, demand for clean, warm, soft, tannin-rich water, and the vulnerability of the tiny young to any tankmate (cardinal tetras and Ancistrus are both flagged by experienced keepers as fry predators) make a dedicated, near-species-only setup close to mandatory for success.
In the aquarium
Biotoecus dicentrarchus is not a fish for beginners, and it is not a fish for a community tank stocked on impulse. At under four centimetres standard length, with a metabolism calibrated to warm, mineral-free, heavily tannin-stained water and a nervous system that reads every raised voice and vibration as a predation event, it demands an experienced hand, a purpose-built setup, and a willingness to give up the idea of a busy display tank. The reward, for keepers who deliver what the fish actually needs, is a pair of extraordinarily beautiful, behaviorally rich animals living out behaviours that almost no one in the hobby has witnessed at first hand.
The tank does not need to be large — a dedicated pair can be maintained in as little as 15 US gal — but it must replicate blackwater conditions with real commitment. Water temperature should run 79–86 °F (the habitat record of 93 °F represents extreme sun-warmed shallows; aquarium targets in the high 20s are more appropriate for long-term health). pH should be held between 5.0 and 6.5, hardness as close to zero as achievable; RO or rain water remineralised minimally, conditioned with dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, beech) or alder cones, and tinted to at least a pale amber is the standard approach. Any tap water with measurable carbonate hardness will suppress colour, suppress breeding behaviour, and, over time, shorten the fish's life. This is non-negotiable — not a preference, but a physiological requirement rooted in the soft-acidic chemistry of every Orinoco caño it comes from.
The aquascape should provide a fine sand substrate deep enough (1–1.5 in minimum) for the fish to mouth and sift it. A heavy covering of dried leaf litter anchored with small pebbles provides both a primary microhabitat and a foraging ground: the invertebrate biofilm that develops in aged litter is likely close to the fish's natural diet. Caves — small clay or terracotta tubes, inverted half-coconut shells, stacked slate, or even carefully placed branchy wood with a hidden pocket — are essential; without a real choice of spawning sites the fish will not breed and will remain permanently stressed. Subdued lighting, provided either by floating plants or a light circuit dimmed well below full output, completes the picture. This is a fish that lives in shallow forest-marginal water under a canopy; a bright, bare tank is alien territory.
Tankmates must be chosen with extreme care, and the default position should be a species-only or near-species-only setup. Small, soft-water characids — pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.), small hatchetfish, or similarly sized, non-boisterous micro-tetras — can work as dithers, providing the surface movement that signals safety to a skittish cichlid, as long as they are fine enough not to compete for food or disturb spawning sites. Anything larger than the cichlids themselves, anything even occasionally nippy (including many small barbs and active tetras), and anything that investigates caves — Ancistrus, loricariids in general, most gouramis — is incompatible. Corydoras are a tempting co-inhabitant and sometimes tried, but the constant bottom activity near leaf litter stresses the cichlids and large Corydoras can destroy a spawning. If breeding is the goal, the pair should be alone.
Feeding is a point of frequent failure for first-time keepers. Biotoecus dicentrarchus does not accept dry foods readily and will slowly decline on a pellet-and-flake diet, however high-quality. The diet must be anchored in small live or frozen invertebrates: black mosquito larvae (chironomid larvae, small and medium sizes), white mosquito larvae, Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, and — for conditioning prior to breeding — adult brine shrimp and Cyclops. The fish feed from the substrate and lower water column; floating foods are largely ignored. Small, frequent feedings rather than one large daily ration suit a micro-predator of this size. Water quality is the other chronic failure point: at this scale of tank, with this level of organic loading from live foods and leaf litter, ammonia and nitrite can spike invisibly; a mature, well-seeded filter and weekly water changes of 20–30% with matched water (same pH, same temperature — a cold change is a medical emergency for a three-centimetre tropical cichlid) are the minimum maintenance regime. This species is rarely kept, rarely offered for sale, and almost never bred with fry raised to adulthood outside specialist circles; it is best approached as a project fish by a keeper who has already had sustained success with demanding dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma or Dicrossus.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Biotoecus dicentrarchus as Least Concern (assessed 22 October 2020 by Lina Mesa-Salazar, published in the 2021 update), reflecting a reasonably wide distribution across the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela and the absence of any documented species-specific threat. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial fisheries interest; collection for the aquarium trade is sporadic and small-scale, the fish being a specialist rarity rather than a volume export. That favourable status should be read against the wider state of its basin, however. The Orinoco remains one of the most diverse and still relatively intact large river systems on the planet — roughly a thousand freshwater fish species — but reviews of the basin (Lasso and colleagues; the WWF basin assessments) identify deforestation, dam construction, overfishing and, increasingly, the mining frontier known as the Orinoco Mining Arc as the principal pressures on its aquatic habitats. Mining-driven sedimentation, mercury contamination and the clearing of riparian forest bear directly on exactly the kind of small, clear, shallow marginal waters this cichlid depends on. Nothing in the record shows Biotoecus dicentrarchus to be in decline today, but as a small-range, habitat-particular specialist it is precisely the sort of fish whose status could shift quietly if those basin-scale pressures intensify.
