Taxonomy & naming
Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875, in his treatise on the cichlids ('Chromiden') of the Amazon, originally as Chaetobranchus orbicularis. In the same work Steindachner coined Chaetobranchopsis as a subgenus to accommodate it, and the group was later raised to full generic rank; the binomial accordingly carries Steindachner's name in parentheses to record that the fish was moved out of its original genus. Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis is the type species of the genus. The Catalog of Fishes lists a broad scatter of syntypes in Vienna (NMW), Cambridge (MCZ) and Munich (ZSM), drawn from the Amazon at Pará, Santarém and Gurupá, the Rio Xingu at Porto do Moz, the Rio Negro and the Rio Hyuvari in Brazil. One later name, Chaetobranchus (Chaetobranchopsis) bitaeniatus Ahl, 1936 — a reference to the 'two stripes' on the flank — has been synonymised with it, though the bitaeniatus name lingered for decades in the aquarium literature. The genus belongs to the chaetobranchines, a small assemblage of filter-feeding cichlids that also contains the second species of the genus, Chaetobranchopsis australis (Eigenmann & Ward, 1907) of the far south, and the related genus Chaetobranchus (Chaetobranchus flavescens and Chaetobranchus semifasciatus). The quickest way to separate the two genera is to count the spines at the front of the anal fin: Chaetobranchopsis carries five or six, Chaetobranchus only three. Where the chaetobranchines sit on the cichlid family tree has been argued over for more than a century — Regan (1906) revised the group and placed it on its own basal branch; Kullander (1998) united it with the oscar genus Astronotus in a subfamily Astronotinae on the strength of their shared, uniquely shaped gill-raker teeth; while molecular work by Farias and colleagues (2000) instead recovered the chaetobranchines near the eartheaters (Geophaginae) rather than close to Astronotus. The placement remains genuinely unsettled.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length, and aquarium accounts put adults in the rough range of 4.5–6 in total length, making Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis markedly smaller than its southern congener Chaetobranchopsis australis, which reaches some 10 in. The body is deep, strongly compressed and high-backed — distinctly 'squatter' than the more elongate Chaetobranchus species — over a metallic bronze-to-gold ground in which each scale carries a glittering golden edge; the unpaired fins are yellowish with reddish bands and wavy lines, and the iris is a striking blood-red. The single most useful field mark is a pair of dark longitudinal stripes: an upper line running from the eye back to the top of the caudal peduncle, and a lower one from the gill cover at the level of the pectoral fin to the base of the tail. Midway along the body these stripes swell into blotches, and because the striping is under behavioural control the pattern is changeable — in many live fish the stripes fade away, leaving just the two flank spots that gave the species its older name bitaeniatus and, indirectly, the epithet orbicularis ('a little circle'). The defining internal feature of the whole group sits out of sight on the gill arches: extremely long, slender and numerous setiform (hair-like) gill rakers, the sieve that lets the fish strain plankton from the water. Reported sexual dimorphism is slight to absent; experienced keepers note no obvious external difference between the sexes outside of breeding condition, when ripe females fill out with eggs.
Habitat
Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis is an Amazon-basin fish. FishBase traces its range along the Amazon River from the mouth of the Rio Negro downstream to Marajó Island, and into Amapá in northern Brazil; the Catalog of Fishes summarises the distribution as the Amazon basin of Brazil and Bolivia, and aquarium-trade accounts extend it south and west into the Guaporé, Mamoré and Madre de Dios drainages of Bolivia. It is a fish of turbid, plankton-rich whitewater — the muddy, suspended-sediment-laden waters of central Amazonas and the floodplain lakes and slow lagoons that flank the big rivers — which is exactly the habitat a filter-feeder needs, since open standing water is where suspended plankton accumulates. It is benthopelagic, hanging in the water column rather than working the bottom. In-situ data for the genus come mostly from collections of the closely similar Chaetobranchopsis australis in Bolivia, where Staeck and Linke found the fish in pond-like widenings of small streams and in lagoons, in very turbid but very soft, acidic water: about pH 6.6, around 1–1.5 °dGH, and a water temperature near 84 °F, the fish sheltering just beneath floating mats of water hyacinth. Stawikowski and Werner reported a wider envelope across Bolivian sites — pH roughly 6 to 8, hardness from very soft to moderately hard, and temperatures of about 75–84 °F — suggesting the fish tolerates a broader chemical range than its blackwater reputation implies. FishBase's preferred temperature band for Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis is a warm 73–81 °F.
Feeding
Feeding is what makes this fish remarkable. Despite a large, protrusible, basket-like mouth, Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis is not a predator — it has comparatively weak dentition — but a 'gape-and-pump' filter-feeding planktivore. It holds station in mid-water and rhythmically extends and retracts its mouth, drawing water in and forcing it out across the gills (oral pumping); the mouth and gill covers work in alternation, mouth open as the opercula close and vice versa. Plankton suspended in that stream of water is strained out and retained on the long, fine, numerous setiform gill rakers — the same character that names the genus (chaeto-, bristle; branchus, gill). FishBase lists the species as 'probably a filter feeder' and places it at a trophic level around 3.0. The related Chaetobranchus was deduced to be a plankton feeder by Lowe-McConnell on the strength of its gill-raker morphology and weak teeth, and the same logic applies here; it is this dependence on suspended plankton that ties the fish to large, turbid, plankton-bearing bodies of water. Field observers of Chaetobranchopsis australis also noted the fish scraping algae from stones and wood and filtering mulm, and suggested that abundant small freshwater shrimp at the collecting sites may form part of the natural diet — so the group is probably not an obligate planktivore so much as a specialist sieve-feeder that will take what its apparatus can catch.
Mating
Almost nothing has been documented about courtship and pair formation in Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis specifically. The chaetobranchines as a whole are poorly known reproductively, and the turbid whitewater they favour has frustrated direct observation — Lowe-McConnell, watching the related Chaetobranchus in Guyana, found the muddy water made breeding behaviour impossible to see. What little exists is by analogy. The genus appears to be largely peaceful and only weakly territorial: keepers report very little intraspecific aggression even when groups of Chaetobranchopsis are housed together, which is unusual among cichlids and consistent with a fish that schools in open water. In the related Chaetobranchus, females mature smaller than males and ripen ahead of the rainy season, implying a seasonal, rains-triggered reproductive cycle typical of Amazonian floodplain fishes. For Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis itself, the pre-spawning behaviour — how pairs form, court and stake out a site — has simply not been recorded in the wild or, so far as the published record shows, in captivity.
Breeding
Breeding remains essentially undocumented. Chaetobranchine cichlids are generally understood to be biparental substrate spawners — open- or surface-brooding cichlids that lay eggs on a cleaned site and guard them as a pair — rather than mouthbrooders, though even this rests partly on inference; Lowe-McConnell once speculated that the lack of a caudal eyespot in Chaetobranchus might hint at mouthbrooding, a guess most workers now discount. No clutch size, egg description, fry-development data or spawning trigger has been reliably published for Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis, and to the best of the available record neither it nor any of its three chaetobranchine relatives has been spawned in the home aquarium, despite the group having been in the German hobby since the 1930s. The one near-success on record is indirect: an American keeper turned Chaetobranchopsis australis out into outdoor Florida ponds and obtained reproduction under those semi-natural, plankton-rich conditions, which points to large volume, live planktonic food and a seasonal cue as the likely requirements. Any clutch figure quoted for this species should therefore be read as genus-typical inference for a small biparental substrate-spawning cichlid, not a measured value — the honest position is that the breeding biology of Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis is a blank waiting to be filled.
In the aquarium
Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis is one of the most obscure and rarely kept South American cichlids, and it has a hard-won reputation as a difficult fish — not because it is aggressive or delicate to handle, but because feeding it correctly is genuinely awkward. It first reached the German hobby via Aquarium Hamburg in 1934 and was exported from Manaus in some numbers in the mid-twentieth century, but it never established itself in the trade and today turns up only sporadically, of interest mainly to advanced keepers looking for a challenge.
The central problem is the diet. As a filter-feeding planktivore the fish is adapted to sieve fine, suspended live food more or less continuously, and many imported specimens slowly waste away to a 'knife-edge' belly in captivity even while appearing to feed. The keepers who have done best offer abundant small live and frozen planktonic foods — live Daphnia, newly hatched and adult brine shrimp, Cyclops, frozen daphnia and bloodworm — fed generously, since the fish filters its meals from the water and a good deal is inevitably wasted. Encouragingly, the species is not strictly an obligate planktivore: well-kept individuals have learned to take frozen bloodworms, and some have eaten pelleted and flake foods with gusto, so a varied menu anchored on filterable live food, supplemented with prepared foods, gives the best odds. Because so much food ends up in the water, strong filtration and some scavengers to mop up waste are sensible.
In other respects husbandry is undemanding. A spacious tank — on the order of a 47 in / four-foot aquarium for a pair or small group — with a sandy substrate, bogwood and open mid-water swimming space suits it; this is a calm, open-water fish, not a digger or a rockwork specialist. Water chemistry is forgiving given the species' turbid-water origins: soft, slightly acidic water is the safe default (the genus has been kept and maintained healthily around pH 6.4–6.8 at 79–81 °F), but neutral to slightly alkaline water is tolerated by carefully acclimated fish, matching the broad pH 6–8 range recorded in the wild. Temperature should sit in the warm high-20s Celsius. Temperament is mild: chaetobranchines show little aggression toward one another or toward tankmates too large to be inhaled, so they can share a tank with other peaceful, similarly sized South Americans — the practical limit is competition for food, since slow, fussy filter-feeders are easily out-eaten by greedier tankmates, and many keepers do best housing them alone or with quiet dither fish. The honest summary: a peaceful, attractive fish that is hard to keep in long-term condition and has never been bred in the aquarium, recommended only to keepers willing to commit to a heavy, sustained supply of live planktonic food.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis as Least Concern (assessed 5 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023), with a population trend recorded as stable. The assessment lists the species from Bolivia, Brazil and French Guiana, reflecting a wide distribution across the Amazon basin and its margins. It carries no CITES listing and is rated harmless to humans; FishBase notes only minor commercial fishery use, and the fish is locally taken for food within its range. As a widely distributed, habitat-tolerant species of the open floodplain it is far less exposed than the Amazon's many narrow-range endemics, and no species-specific threat has been flagged. The relevant pressures are the broad, basin-wide ones affecting Amazonian freshwaters generally — damming, deforestation, mining and altered flood-pulse regimes degrading the floodplain-lake habitats that a plankton-feeding fish depends on — rather than any documented danger to this particular cichlid. One footnote from the parasitological literature: muscle tissue of Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis from Marajó Island in the Brazilian Amazon has been found infected by the myxosporean Kudoa orbicularis, a parasite of interest mainly for fishery and food-quality reasons rather than as a conservation concern.
