Taxonomy & naming
Chaetobranchus semifasciatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875, in his 'Beiträge zur Kenntniss der Chromiden des Amazonenstromes', from a series of specimens taken across the central Amazon of Brazil — the Catalog of Fishes lists type localities at Óbidos, Codajás, Tefé, the Rio Içá, Lake Hyanuary and Saracá. Steindachner did not fix a single holotype; the name rests on a scatter of syntypes now held in the Harvard MCZ, the Vienna NMW, the Leiden RMNH and the Munich ZSM. He placed the fish in Chaetobranchus, the genus Johann Jakob Heckel had erected in 1840 for the yellow-throated Chaetobranchus flavescens, and the two species remain the genus's only members to this day. Steindachner coined the epithet semifasciatus — 'half-banded' — for the dark vertical bars that descend from the dorsal fin about halfway down the flank, a feature clearly rendered in the plate accompanying his description and one that Chaetobranchus flavescens lacks. Where Chaetobranchus flavescens carries a single dark mid-flank blotch, Chaetobranchus semifasciatus instead bears a conspicuous white-ringed ocellus on the caudal-fin base (recalling that of Satanoperca daemon) and has 'scaly' rather than 'naked' vertical fins. The genus belongs to a small, anciently-branching lineage of Neotropical cichlids. Stiassny (1991) linked Chaetobranchus with the oscar Astronotus as sister genera — they uniquely share hair-like microbranchiospines, and Kullander's (1998) morphological classification accordingly grouped them in the subfamily Astronotinae (tribe Chaetobranchini), the position FishBase still follows. Molecular work has told a different story: Farias and colleagues (2000) recovered the chaetobranchines as the sister group of the eartheaters (Geophaginae) rather than of Astronotus, and the Catalog of Fishes now files the species simply under Cichlidae: Cichlinae. The genus was revised by Regan (1906) and treated in detail by Kullander (1986; Kullander & Nijssen 1989).
Morphology
This is a fairly large, deep-bodied but laterally compressed cichlid with a strikingly big, upturned, underslung mouth whose premaxillae protrude into a wide gape — the 'basketmouth' shape that gives the chaetobranchines their common name. Steindachner's original sample ranged from 6.5–11.5 in in total length, and FishBase gives a maximum of 9 in standard length; it is among the larger filter-feeding cichlids of the basin. The base colour is a silvery, faintly metallic grey, paler than its yellow-throated congener but with a similar yellowish wash on the throat. The two diagnostic markings are the namesake series of dark vertical half-bars that run down from the dorsal fin to about the midline of the flank, and a prominent black, white-ringed ocellus at the base of the tail. The caudal, dorsal and anal fins carry concentric dark stripes on a reddish ground, and mature fish show a hint of filamentous extension to the soft dorsal — far less developed than the dramatic combtail streamers of Chaetobranchus flavescens. The single feature that defines the genus is hidden under the gill cover: the first gill arch (and, uniquely among cichlids, the lower pharyngeal tooth plate as well) bears very numerous, long, slender, hair-like gill rakers, the setiform 'microbranchiospines' from which the name Chaetobranchus — 'bristle-gill' — derives. No clear external sexual dimorphism has been described for this species; in the better-studied Chaetobranchus flavescens, males simply grow somewhat larger than females.
Habitat
Chaetobranchus semifasciatus is endemic to the Brazilian Amazon, where it occupies the main channel and floodplain of the Amazon-Solimões from the upper river around Tabatinga downstream to Óbidos; it has been collected near Manaus, Tefé, Itacoatiara and Óbidos. Its range is far more circumscribed than that of the wide-ranging Chaetobranchus flavescens, which spreads across the whole basin and into the Guianas, Venezuela and Bolivia. As a planktivore it is tied to large, open, plankton-rich bodies of water — Kullander records the genus from turbid whitewater floodplain lakes, the várzea environments where suspended phytoplankton and zooplankton are abundant. These are warm, lowland waters; field data for the genus and its relatives describe temperatures broadly in the mid-20s to around 86 °F and pH spanning the soft, acidic blackwater end (around 6) up to near-neutral and mildly alkaline whitewater (to about 8), with hardness anywhere from very soft to moderately mineralised depending on the water type. As a fish of floodplain lakes and channels rather than deep rivers, it lives in the shallow surface and midwater layers, typically within the upper few metres of the water column.
Feeding
Chaetobranchus is one of the very few truly filter-feeding cichlid lineages, and its whole anatomy is built around the job. The fish hangs in open water and works its protrusible mouth as a pump: it gapes, drawing a vacuum that pulls water in through the mouth and out across the gills, where the dense palisade of long, hair-fine gill rakers strains the suspended plankton and retains it as food. Mouth and gill covers beat in alternating rhythm — mouth open as the opercula close, then the reverse — so the fish takes mouthful after mouthful of water without swimming forward. FishBase notes the species 'appears to be a vegetarian in nature', and Lowe-McConnell inferred from the fine gill-raker comb and weak dentition of the genus that these are phytoplankton-and-zooplankton feeders restricted to waters where plankton is plentiful (though formal gut analyses remain scant). The estimated trophic level is around 3.0, consistent with a planktivore taking a mix of algae and small invertebrates rather than a strict herbivore or predator. In the floodplain community it fills the planktivore niche, harvesting the suspended production of the várzea lakes that most other cichlids cannot exploit.
Mating
Almost nothing has been published on the social and reproductive behaviour of Chaetobranchus semifasciatus specifically — it has scarcely been observed alive, let alone studied in the wild. What little is inferred comes from its better-known congener Chaetobranchus flavescens, worked on by Lowe-McConnell in Guyana, where breeding coincided with the rainy season: ripe females (maturing at a smaller size than males) could be netted just before the rains, and juveniles appeared once the rains had ended. The turbid whitewater made any direct observation of pairing or spawning impossible, so courtship, pair formation and territoriality in this genus remain essentially undocumented. By the standards of the family these are presumed to be pair-forming substrate spawners rather than mouthbrooders — the well-developed caudal ocellus of Chaetobranchus semifasciatus, a marking often associated with substrate-brooding eartheaters, points away from mouthbrooding (Lowe-McConnell had speculated that the ocellus-less Chaetobranchus flavescens might be a mouthbrooder, but that has never been confirmed).
Breeding
The breeding biology of Chaetobranchus semifasciatus has never been documented — it has not been spawned in captivity, and its reproduction in the wild has not been observed, the turbid plankton-rich waters it favours making field study of spawning extremely difficult. On the available evidence the genus is taken to be a biparental substrate spawner in the general cichlid pattern: a bonded pair would deposit adhesive eggs on a cleaned surface and guard the eggs and free-swimming fry together, rather than brooding in the mouth. Clutch size for the species is unrecorded; congeneric and similarly-sized open-water cichlids of the basin typically produce a few hundred to perhaps a thousand or so eggs per spawning, but no figure specific to Chaetobranchus has been published and any number should be treated as genus-typical inference rather than measured fact. Breeding is thought to be cued to the annual flood pulse, as it is in Chaetobranchus flavescens, with spawning timed to the rising water and plankton bloom of the rainy season so that fry emerge into a food-rich, expanding floodplain.
In the aquarium
Chaetobranchus semifasciatus is, for practical purposes, an aquarium unknown. The author of the standard hobby account on the genus, Wayne Leibel, wrote that he had never seen a live one in the trade; the species is far better represented by a famous photograph of dozens of dead adults heaped for sale in a Manaus market than by any living import. It is therefore a fish to admire in the wild and the literature rather than a realistic aquarium subject — and the genus as a whole has a grim captive record that explains why.
The core problem is the filter-feeding diet. These cichlids are built to strain suspended plankton, and in captivity they tend to slowly starve on conventional foods, wasting to the tell-tale 'knife-edge' belly even while picking at offered fare. Keepers who have done best with the related Chaetobranchus flavescens, Chaetobranchopsis australis and Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis succeeded by feeding large, sustained quantities of small, filterable live and frozen foods — newly-hatched and adult brine shrimp, Daphnia, Cyclops, frozen zooplankton and bloodworms — and by housing the fish on their own, without faster tankmates to out-compete them at feeding time. Some individuals eventually learned to take finely-milled freeze-dried krill, frozen foods and even pelleted foods, but this cannot be assumed, and a newly imported fish that will not feed heavily is, in the bleak phrase from the hobby literature, often 'dead already and just doesn't know it yet'.
For anyone who did obtain this species, the sensible setup follows what has worked for its congeners: a large, well-filtered, biologically mature tank kept warm (about 79–84 °F) and on the soft, slightly acidic to neutral side (pH roughly 6.4-6.8 has suited captive Chaetobranchopsis), with calm, open midwater swimming space and sparse décor. The genus is not notably aggressive — conspecifics have been kept together with little conflict — so the limiting factor is nutrition, not temperament. Realistically, Chaetobranchus semifasciatus is best regarded as a specialist's curiosity that is rarely available and difficult to sustain; it has never been bred in captivity, and getting any chaetobranchine to spawn in the aquarium remains an open challenge.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chaetobranchus semifasciatus as Least Concern (assessed 5 November 2020 by Frederico, Lima & Reis; published 2023), with the population trend listed as unknown. No specific threats are identified: the aquatic systems across its central-Amazon range are in relatively good condition, and while the species is occasionally encountered in local fish markets, this harvest is not considered to have any meaningful impact on its numbers. The assessment notes the selective logging of floodplain (várzea) forest as the one pressure on its habitat, but does not regard it as a threat to the species. There is no CITES listing. As a planktivore tied to large floodplain lakes, the fish is more dependent than most on the integrity of the várzea flood-pulse system, so the broader pressures on Amazonian freshwaters — deforestation, damming, altered flooding regimes and pollution — form the relevant long-term backdrop even though none is currently documented as a danger to this particular species.
