Chetia welwitschi, sometimes listed as the Angolan happy, is a poorly known predatory cichlid endemic to the Atlantic-flowing rivers of western Angola. It belongs to Chetia, a small genus of serranochromine cichlids — large-mouthed, fish-eating maternal mouthbrooders whose closest affinities lie surprisingly far away, with the haplochromine radiations of the East African Rift. Described by George Boulenger in 1898 from material the Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch carried back from the Angolan interior, the species has remained known from only a handful of specimens, and much of its biology must be read from its better-studied southern relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

George Albert Boulenger described this fish in 1898 as Pelmatochromis welwitschi, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, from a single specimen — the unique holotype, BMNH 1864.7.13.62, in the Natural History Museum, London. The type material had been collected decades earlier by the Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch during his long expedition through Angola (1853–1861), and reached the British Museum through the Welwitsch collections. Boulenger gave the type locality only as 'Fluilla, Angola', a place name that has never been securely identified; Greenwood (1984), reviewing the haplochromine cichlids of the Cunene and other Angolan rivers, treated the locality as uncertain, and it remains so today. The species was later transferred to the genus Chetia, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Chetia welwitschi (Boulenger 1898), following Skelton's checklist treatments (1991, 1993, 2001) and his 2019 account of the freshwater fishes of Angola. The genus Chetia itself was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1961 for the canary kurper Chetia flaviventris of the Limpopo system, and now contains roughly five species spread across south-central and southern Africa. Chetia sits within the serranochromine assemblage of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae — the southern-African 'largemouths' allied to Serranochromis and Sargochromis. Molecular work on the Angolan and southern-African haplotilapiines (Schwarzer et al. 2009, 2012; Schedel et al. 2019) places this serranochromine lineage with East African 'Rift'–Lake Tanganyika affinities rather than with West African cichlids, a signature shared with the region's Synodontis catfishes and spiny eels. Within Angola the genus is represented by two species: Chetia welwitschi in the western coastal drainages and Chetia gracilis (Greenwood 1984) from the Cutato Nganguela in the Cubango–Okavango system.

Morphology

Chetia welwitschi is a modest-sized cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 6 in standard length, based on Boulenger's and subsequent material, and like its congeners it is a fairly elongate, laterally compressed fish with a comparatively large, oblique mouth — the body plan of a pursuit predator rather than a grazer. The genus as a whole is built around that big mouth; Chetia are often grouped with the 'largemouth breams' or kurpers of southern Africa precisely because of the size of the gape relative to the head. Detailed in-life coloration for this species is not well documented, because so few specimens have been examined; the better-known congener Chetia flaviventris develops a yellow belly in breeding males (the trait that gave the genus its name), and serranochromines generally show iridescent flank spotting and dark lachrymal or cheek markings, but how closely Chetia welwitschi matches that pattern in life is not firmly established. FishBase carries no formal published meristic short-description for the species beyond the original account, and the Angolan happy has never been the subject of a modern redescription. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for Chetia welwitschi specifically, but in Chetia and related serranochromine mouthbrooders males typically grow larger, develop brighter breeding colour, and are the territorial, displaying sex — so a degree of dimorphism is expected by analogy with the genus, even though it has not been measured in this fish.

Habitat

The species is an Angolan endemic of the western, Atlantic-draining rivers. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes anchor its confirmed range to the Cunene River system in southwestern Angola (extending toward the Angola–Namibia border), and Skelton (2023), in his survey of the fishes of the highlands and escarpments of Angola and Namibia, adds the Longa River to the south of the Cuanza — a specimen photographed there by R. Tate in 2018 appears to be this species, with tentatively identified material also from the upper Cunene. An old report from the Camaloa River (a Caluango/Caluango-system affluent in the Kasai drainage of the middle Congo basin), traceable to Poll's 1967 Angolan ichthyofauna, would extend the range into the Congo basin and across into the Democratic Republic of Congo; that record is regarded as unconfirmed and is best treated with caution. FishBase places the species between about 13°S and 19°S in the tropical zone. No in-situ water chemistry has been published for Chetia welwitschi itself. Its habitat is therefore inferred from the broader genus and from the warm, often seasonal middle- and lower-order Angolan coastal rivers it inhabits: Chetia favour standing or slow-flowing water — pools, quiet reaches and impoundments — typically over sandy substrates with marginal vegetation, the kind of calm, warm-water setting in which a sit-and-wait predator hunts. The depth tile reflects this shallow river-pool biotope rather than any measured profile, as the species has never been surveyed with depth-stratified sampling.

Feeding

Chetia are predators. The genus is characterised by a large mouth, and the southern congeners are documented feeding on aquatic invertebrates and small fish: Chetia flaviventris, the canary kurper, is a popular light-tackle angling fish in South Africa precisely because it is an aggressive, readily-hooked little predator that takes insects, crustaceans and fry. By direct analogy, Chetia welwitschi is best understood as a carnivore of small fishes and macro-invertebrates, capturing prey with a quick lunge of its capacious jaws. No gut-content study exists for the Angolan species specifically — its diet has never been examined in the field — so this trophic placement rests on its morphology and on the well-established habits of the genus rather than on direct observation. FishBase's model-based trophic-level estimate of about 3.9 (with wide uncertainty) is consistent with a small predator near the third trophic level. In its river-pool community the species would function as a mid-level piscivore/invertivore, the role serranochromine 'largemouths' fill across south-central African waters.

Mating

No courtship or pair-formation behaviour has been recorded for Chetia welwitschi in the wild or in captivity — the species has essentially never been kept or observed reproducing. What can be said comes from the genus and the wider serranochromine group, which are maternal (uniparental female) mouthbrooders, the dominant reproductive mode among African cichlids. In such fish the social structure at breeding time is built around displaying, territorial males that court ripe females; spawning is brief, the female takes the eggs into her mouth, and the male's role ends at fertilisation. Serranochromines such as Chetia and Serranochromis are not colonial lek-breeders in the manner of some Rift-lake haplochromines but tend toward dispersed, male-defended sites in quiet water. For Chetia welwitschi the specifics — how males advertise, where they spawn, how aggressive they are toward rivals — are unknown and would have to be confirmed by study; they are presented here only as the expectation set by close relatives, not as observed fact.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in Chetia welwitschi. The genus is composed of maternal mouthbrooders, so the working expectation is that a ripe female spawns a modest clutch onto a cleared substrate, immediately picks up the eggs, and incubates them orally — the eggs, then the larvae, developing inside her mouth until the fry are free-swimming, after which she may continue to shelter them in her mouth at the first sign of danger. Clutch sizes in small serranochromine and haplochromine mouthbrooders of this size class are typically only a few dozen to a couple of hundred relatively large eggs — a low-fecundity, high-investment strategy that trades egg number for the protection of oral incubation. FishBase's life-history modelling assumes a fecundity under 1,000 for the species, consistent with that picture. No egg count, incubation period, fry size, or spawning trigger has ever been published for Chetia welwitschi; every numeric here is a genus-typical estimate, clearly labelled as such, and the honest position is that the reproductive biology of this particular fish remains undescribed.

In the aquarium

Chetia welwitschi is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has no presence in the ornamental trade, is known from only a few museum specimens, and there is no published record of it being maintained or bred by hobbyists or institutions. Anyone who genuinely encountered it — most plausibly a researcher or collector working Angolan rivers — would be dealing with a small, predatory serranochromine mouthbrooder, and reasonable husbandry can be sketched from its biology and from the keeping of related largemouths. A single specimen this size needs a tank on the order of 47 in and upward; a group or a breeding attempt needs considerably more, because predatory mouthbrooders of this type are intolerant of conspecifics in cramped quarters and males can be hard on females and rivals. The set-up should reflect warm, calm Angolan river pools: a sand substrate, scattered wood and rock to break sightlines and create territories, gentle to moderate flow, and subdued lighting. Water should be warm and near-neutral — roughly 68–82 °F and pH about 6.5–7.8, the envelope typical of these coastal-river and highland-stream habitats — with stable, well-filtered conditions and routine water changes. Being a predator, it would take live and meaty frozen foods readily (small fish, earthworms, insect larvae, crustaceans) and could be weaned onto good carnivore pellets. Tankmates would have to be too large to swallow and robust enough to share space with a quick-mouthed hunter; nothing small or delicate belongs with it. None of this has been tested for the species — it is extrapolation, offered honestly as such — and the realistic statement is simply that this is a wild Angolan fish with no aquarium history.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chetia welwitschi as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 1 May 2009 by da Costa & Moelants. That category is the honest reflection of how little is known: the species is recorded from very few specimens, its type locality ('Fluilla') has never been pinned down, its true range across the Cunene, Longa and possibly other western Angolan rivers is unresolved, and there are no population or trend data. FishBase echoes the assessment that more specimens are needed before the fish can even be properly studied. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to people. Because the species is so thinly documented, no specific threats have been quantified for it. The general backdrop, however, is the rapid development of Angola's western river systems — the Cunene and Cuanza in particular carry major dams and hydropower schemes, and the country's freshwater fauna remains under-surveyed even as catchments are altered. For a narrow-range, poorly known endemic predator, that combination of small documented range and unmeasured habitat pressure is exactly the situation in which a Data Deficient listing should prompt fieldwork rather than complacency; the priority is straightforward — find the fish, fix its range, and establish whether its populations are secure.
