Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius barotseensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1920, originally placed in the large catch-all genus Barbus and long listed in the literature as Barbus barotseensis. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) places it in the reclassified genus Enteromius, which accommodates the bulk of the small to medium-sized sub-Saharan African barbs that were progressively extracted from the sprawling old Barbus complex.
The species name barotseensis is a toponym honouring Barotseland, the historic territory of the Lozi people in the upper Zambezi floodplain region of what is now western Zambia, extending into south-eastern Angola. The type locality lies within this region, tying the name to the heart of the species' natural range.
Morphology
Enteromius barotseensis is a small, slender barb with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in per FishBase. Like most small Enteromius, it has the streamlined, fusiform body typical of active mid-water shoalers inhabiting flowing and seasonally flooded waters.
Detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the public literature. The genus Enteromius spans a wide range of body forms, from deep-bodied to elongate, and specific counts and colouration characters for E. barotseensis beyond size have not been widely documented in accessible sources.

As a small, shoaling barb from well-vegetated river margins, the general requirements of comparable small African Enteromius would apply: a roomy, planted aquarium with clean, well-oxygenated water, kept in a group to allow natural shoaling behaviour, fed a varied diet of small invertebrate foods and quality flakes. Anyone encountering this species in specialist African fish circles would be working largely from first principles.
Conservation
Enteromius barotseensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed in 2020. The species occupies a wide range across several major river systems in south-central Africa — the Cunene, Okavango, upper Zambezi, Kafue, and Congo basin tributaries — and there is no evidence of a significant range-wide population decline.
The Barotse floodplain and connecting systems do face localised pressures including subsistence fisheries, water extraction, and periodic drought stress affecting seasonal water bodies, but none of these currently rises to the level of a threat warranting an elevated IUCN category. The species' broad distribution across multiple independent river basins provides resilience against localised disturbance.
