Chromidotilapia guntheri, Günther's mouthbrooder, is the most widespread member of a small West and Central African genus famous for an upside-down twist on cichlid parenting. Like its congeners it is a monogamous, strongly pair-bonding ovophilic mouthbrooder — but in this species it is the MALE who scoops the fertilised eggs into his mouth and carries them, while the female stands guard over the territory, a reversal of the maternal mouthbrooding seen in most cichlids. A robust, sand-sifting fish of coastal forest streams from Liberia to Cameroon, it has been a quietly enduring presence in the West African cichlid hobby for decades.

Taxonomy & naming

Günther's mouthbrooder was described by the French ichthyologist Henri Émile Sauvage in 1882, in a paper on the fishes of the territory of Assinie on the West African coast (the type locality lies in what is now south-eastern Côte d'Ivoire). Sauvage placed his new fish in the genus Hemichromis, as Hemichromis guntheri, honouring the German-born British Museum ichthyologist Albert Günther. The genus Chromidotilapia into which it was later moved was erected by George Boulenger in 1898. Because Sauvage himself wrote the epithet without an umlaut over the 'u', the original spelling guntheri is the correct one, and the variant 'guentheri' that appears in older aquarium literature is an unjustified emendation. The species sits within the chromidotilapiine assemblage of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, an informal clade of West-Central African cichlids centred on Chromidotilapia. It carries a notably tangled synonymy reflecting its enormous range: Hemichromis voltae Steindachner 1887 (Volta River, Ghana), Hemichromis tersquamatus Günther 1899 (Kotchwah River, Ghana), Pelmatochromis boulengeri Lönnberg 1903 (Meme River, Cameroon), Pelmatochromis pellegrini Boulenger 1903 (Niger Delta), and Chromidotilapia bosumtwensis Paulo 1979 (Lake Bosumtwe, Ghana) are all today regarded as the same fish, several of them synonymised by Anton Lamboj, the modern authority on the genus. Historically two subspecies were recognised — the wide-ranging nominate C. g. guntheri and C. g. loennbergi, a form restricted to the crater lake Barombi-ba-Kotto in Cameroon — but the subspecific division is now generally abandoned, and the Barombi-ba-Kotto population's status as a distinct entity remains unresolved. Aquarium-trade taxonomy also groups the genus informally by body form rather than strict phylogeny: Chromidotilapia guntheri anchors what hobbyist literature calls the guntheri–kingsleyae species group, alongside the historic guntheri subspecies and Chromidotilapia kingsleyae, plus a scatter of undescribed relatives further south and east in the Ogooué drainage of Gabon and in Congo. Those Gabonese and Congolese populations belong to the same informal group rather than to C. guntheri itself, whose confirmed range stops well short of the Ogooué; the group as a whole is set apart from the smaller-bodied batesii–finleyi group of Cameroon (which includes C. batesii, C. finleyi and C. linkei) by its larger adult size.

Morphology

Chromidotilapia guntheri is a stocky, fusiform cichlid of moderate size, reaching about 7 in in standard length though most aquarium and field specimens are smaller. The body is fairly elongate with a straight dorsal head profile and a truncate to slightly emarginate tail. Fin counts run to 15–17 dorsal spines and 9–12 soft rays, with 3–4 anal spines and 6–8 anal soft rays; the first gill arch carries 21–25 rakers. Coloration is an understated brassy-grey to olive over the back, paler below, with the most telling marks appearing under stress, when two continuous dark lateral bands run the length of the body. The iris is yellow to brownish, sometimes flushed red in its posterior half, and the upper lip is white to pale blue. The species is sexually dimorphic. Males grow larger and have a more produced first pectoral-fin ray; females, by contrast, carry the more colourful breeding dress — a spawning female develops a vivid reddish-pink to wine-coloured belly and an intensified white or iridescent band in the upper part of the dorsal fin, advertising her readiness. Across its broad range the species also varies geographically: Cameroonian populations, for instance, tend to show a row of dark blotches in the dorsal fin that other forms lack.

Habitat

The species is one of the most broadly distributed cichlids of coastal West Africa, occurring through the lowland river drainages from the Saint John River of central Liberia eastward to the Cross River and the Benito (Río Benito) of south-western Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, and inland into the Niger and its major tributary the Benue (Bénoué). Recorded countries span Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Togo. It is essentially a lowland fish of coastal floodplains, savannah streams and forested watercourses, where it favours calmer reaches with submerged cover — tree roots, fallen branches and leaf litter — over soft bottoms it can sift. FishBase records it as benthopelagic and potamodromous, moving within the river system rather than to the sea. Measured water chemistry across its range is soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to mildly alkaline: a pH band of about 6.0–8.0 and hardness from roughly 5 to 19 °dH, with reported temperatures around 73–81 °F. Because it lives in shallow forest streams and floodplain margins rather than deep open water, it occupies a thin near-surface depth band — typically the upper metre or two of the water column — and no substantial depth range is documented for it. The crater-lake population at Barombi-ba-Kotto is the conspicuous exception to its riverine habits.

Feeding

Chromidotilapia guntheri is a benthophagous omnivore with a marked detritivorous bent — FishBase places it low on the food web at a trophic level near 2.6. Like the South American eartheaters Geophagus and Satanoperca, which it superficially recalls in behaviour, it works the bottom by taking mouthfuls of substrate, sifting them for edible particles and expelling the waste through the gills and mouth. A detailed stomach-content study of 156 fish across seven Ivorian water bodies (Boussou and colleagues) found the diet dominated by plant and insect debris, with insect larvae, nymphs and adults taken secondarily, and concluded the species is a generalist omnivore leaning detritivorous, with some individuals specialising opportunistically on insects. Juveniles and adults eat broadly the same prey, but the proportion of gastropods and oligochaete worms in the diet declines as the fish grows. The combination of detritus, small invertebrates, algae and the eggs of other animals makes it an effective and adaptable forager of the leaf-litter and soft-sediment zones of its streams.

Mating

Reproduction in Chromidotilapia is built on a strong monogamous pair bond, and Chromidotilapia guntheri is no exception. Pairs form and then defend a shared territory centred on a chosen spawning site; once adult and bonded, fish of this genus are non-gregarious and territorial, and the pair will hold its ground against intruders. Courtship is mutual, with the ripe female taking an active advertising role — her reddening belly and brightened dorsal band are courtship signals directed at her mate. A field study of populations in four Ivorian coastal rivers (Boussou et al. 2010) found the species to be a fractional (multiple) spawner that breeds essentially year-round, with only modest seasonal fluctuation and a peak of activity in August and September. The same work recorded a male-biased sex ratio across rivers, size classes and seasons, and a mean standard length at first maturity of about 3.5 in in males and 4 in in females — females maturing at a larger size than males, consistent with the demands placed on each sex by this genus's distinctive brood care.

Breeding

Chromidotilapia guntheri is a biparental, ovophilic mouthbrooder with a paternal twist that sets the genus apart from most cichlids. The pair spawns in the open on a cleaned flat surface — a water-worn rock, a slab of slate or a similar hard substrate — in the manner of a substrate spawner. Immediately after fertilisation, however, the eggs are taken up into the mouth, and in this species it is the male who collects essentially the whole clutch and carries it, while the female assumes the role of territory guard. This is the reverse of the maternal mouthbrooding familiar from African Rift-lake cichlids, and FishBase explicitly classifies the fish as a 'substrate spawning, ovophilic, pair bonding, male mouthbrooding species,' correcting earlier reports. Reported clutches are modest for a cichlid: a reproductive-biology study of wild Ivorian fish measured absolute fecundity ranging from about 70 to 470 eggs per female, scaling with body size. The male incubates the eggs and absorbs the larvae for roughly 10–14 days, by which point the free-swimming fry are large enough to take Artemia nauplii. Brood care does not stop at release: both parents continue to guard the school for at least another two weeks, and when danger threatens the fry bolt back into the mouths of either adult — a shared refuge that is one of the most charming sights in the genus.

In the aquarium

Günther's mouthbrooder has a long, if modest, history in the West African cichlid hobby and is among the more approachable members of its genus, but it rewards attention to water quality and tank layout. A single pair needs a base footprint of at least roughly 120 × 12 in (around 100+ litres), and more space is welcome for a pair plus dither fish. The substrate should be soft sand so the fish can browse and sift naturally; décor of choice is subdued lighting with driftwood, scattered roots and a few flat, water-worn rocks or stone slabs to serve as potential spawning surfaces. Water quality is the single most important husbandry variable: these cichlids are sensitive to deteriorating conditions and must never go into a biologically immature tank, so efficient filtration and weekly water changes of 30–50% are the baseline. Target water in the soft-to-moderate, slightly acidic-to-neutral range the species inhabits in the wild — about 75–81 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 — though it tolerates harder, more alkaline water than many soft-water West Africans.

Feeding is straightforward provided the diet stays relatively low in protein, in keeping with the fish's detritivorous, plant-leaning natural diet. A staple of sinking prepared foods with a high vegetable or Spirulina content, supplemented with occasional live or frozen chironomid larvae (bloodworm), Daphnia and Artemia, keeps the fish in good colour and condition; too rich a meat diet is best avoided.

The key to compatibility is the pair bond. Outside breeding the fish is not especially aggressive and can be kept in a community of peaceful open-water characins and cyprinids, or alongside other cichlids that do not crowd it for territory and food. Once a pair forms and spawns, however, it becomes firmly territorial, so for breeding it is best housed alone or with a few small-mouthed, non-predatory dither fish to spread the pair's attention. Two unmatched adults in tight quarters is the usual route to trouble; a bonded pair with room to work is the route to seeing the male carry a mouthful of fry.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chromidotilapia guntheri as Least Concern (assessed 21 April 2019 by P. Lalèyè, published 2020), reflecting its very large range across coastal West and Central Africa, its presence in many independent drainages, and its high reproductive resilience — FishBase estimates a minimum population-doubling time of under 15 months and a low fishing vulnerability. The species is harvested both as a food fish and for the aquarium trade, but at a scale the assessment does not flag as a population-level threat. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The wider concern lies not with the widespread nominate fish but with localised populations: the crater-lake form at Barombi-ba-Kotto in Cameroon, sometimes treated as the subspecies loennbergi, occupies a single tiny water body under pressure from deforestation, water abstraction and other human activity, and is far more vulnerable than the species as a whole. As a hardy, adaptable generalist of coastal rivers, Chromidotilapia guntheri itself is among the least threatened cichlids of its region.
