Taxonomy & naming
Chromidotilapia mamonekenei was described by the Austrian cichlid specialist Anton Lamboj in 1999, in a paper devoted to the cichlid fauna of the Dimonika Biosphere Reserve in the Mayombe massif of the Republic of the Congo ("Zur Cichlidenfauna des Biosphärenreservats von Dimonika (Mayombe, Kongo), mit Beschreibung zweier neuer Chromidotilapia-Arten", Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft für Ichthyologie 1: 139–156, dated 1998 but published 1999). The same paper erected a second new species, Chromidotilapia regani, so the two fish were named together from the same regional survey. The holotype (AMNH 227331) is held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, with paratype series split between the AMNH and the Royal Museum for Central Africa (MRAC) at Tervuren; the type locality is given as Mayombe, Dimonika, Loubomo, in the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville). The genus Chromidotilapia was erected by George Albert Boulenger in 1898 and today contains roughly a dozen species ranging from West Africa (the widespread Chromidotilapia guentheri) across the forests of Lower Guinea and the Congo basin; most are Central-African forest-river endemics. Within that genus, Lamboj diagnosed mamonekenei by a combination of meristic and pigmentation characters — notably 15–20 gill rakers on the first arch, the absence of the large flank spots seen in some relatives, and a stress pattern of four to six dark bars or two rows of dark blotches with short horizontal lines. The name has stood unchallenged since description, with no synonyms, and is treated as valid in every subsequent checklist (Lamboj 2002, 2003; Stiassny et al. 2007).
Morphology
This is a small cichlid by the standards of the family. The maximum recorded size is about 3.5 in standard length (roughly 3.5 inches, snout to tail base), so even large adults are modest fish; total length runs a little over that. The body is fusiform and only moderately deep — Lamboj measured body depth at 29.5–40.6 percent of standard length, averaging about 34 percent — giving the fish a streamlined profile suited to flowing water rather than the disc-like silhouette of many still-water cichlids. The fin counts are typical of the genus: 13–15 dorsal spines followed by 10–13 soft rays, three anal spines and six to eight anal soft rays, and a rounded caudal fin in both sexes. The base coloration is an unshowy grey-brown, and the fish's diagnostic markings appear chiefly when it is stressed or displaying — four to six darker cross-bars, or alternatively two longitudinal rows of dark blotches broken by short horizontal lines along the flank. A relatively deep lachrymal (the bone below the eye, more than 21 percent of head length) is another technical hallmark Lamboj used to separate it from its relatives. As in other Chromidotilapia, mature fish develop iridescent and metallic tones — particularly a bright, often reddish or violet band in the dorsal fin and a glint on the gill cover — that intensify in breeding condition. Sexual dimorphism is comparatively subtle: males and females reach a similar size (Lamboj noted no marked size disparity between the sexes), but as in the genus generally the female is the more colourful sex, carrying a brighter, more contrasting belly and a more vivid metallic sheen in the dorsal fin when ready to spawn, while the male tends to be a touch larger-headed and plainer.
Habitat
Chromidotilapia mamonekenei occupies a small, transboundary range in the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province of West-Central Africa. It is recorded from southwestern Gabon, including the Nyanga basin, and from the western Republic of the Congo, where it occurs in the Loémé and the Kouilou-Niari drainages; the type series came from the Mayombe massif at Dimonika. The whole range sits within a single FEOW freshwater ecoregion, the Ogooué–Nyanga–Kouilou–Niari, a belt of forested coastal rivers draining the western flank of Lower Guinea to the Atlantic. The species is a riverine, not a lacustrine, cichlid: FishBase characterises it as preferring flowing, medium-to-large rivers, and the Dimonika type locality is classic Mayombe habitat — clear to tea-stained streams running over sand, gravel and leaf litter beneath dense equatorial rainforest. Such Lower Guinea forest waters are characteristically soft and acidic, stained by tannins and humic acids leached from the leaf litter, warm and shaded year-round, and only weakly mineralised. No in-situ chemistry has been published for this particular species, but the regional forest-stream biotope it shares with other Mayombe and coastal-Gabon cichlids typically runs warm (about 73–81 °F), soft, and from distinctly acidic to near-neutral. These are shallow-water fish of the river margins, riffles and pool edges, generally encountered within the top metre or two of the water column rather than in deep channels.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Chromidotilapia mamonekenei has been published, and its feeding ecology is inferred from its anatomy and from what is known of the genus. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with an omnivore that leans toward small animal prey. Like other Chromidotilapia it is a benthic forager that works the river bed and leaf litter, taking aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, along with seeds, plant fragments and the organic detritus that accumulates among submerged roots and fallen leaves. Members of the genus characteristically take mouthfuls of substrate and sift edible particles from sand and litter, in the manner of a generalist 'eartheater', then expel the inedible material — a behaviour that has earned the better-known Chromidotilapia guentheri the trade name of African eartheater. In the forest-stream community it occupies the role of a small bottom-feeding invertivore-omnivore, sharing the leaf-litter and gravel zones with other small cichlids, barbs and catfishes of the Mayombe and coastal Gabon rivers.
Mating
The defining trait of Chromidotilapia, and the reason the genus attracts dedicated keepers, is that its members are monogamous pair-bonders that practise biparental mouthbrooding — a far rarer arrangement than the harem-based maternal mouthbrooding of the East African rift lakes. Pairs form stable, lasting bonds and jointly defend a territory; both partners share in raising the brood. In the wild Chromidotilapia mamonekenei has not been observed spawning, but FishBase explicitly classifies it as a pair-bonding, ovophilic, biparental mouthbrooder, and the courtship pattern is expected to follow the genus template. A ripe female solicits the male, often with belly-down displays that show off her brightened ventral coloration and the metallic band in her dorsal fin — in this genus it is frequently the female that initiates and that is the more ornamented sex, an inversion of the usual cichlid pattern. The pair clears and defends a small spawning site, and the bond is maintained through the long period of mouthbrooding and post-release guarding that follows. Territoriality is centred on the nest site and is most intense around spawning; outside of breeding the fish are comparatively retiring.
Breeding
Breeding of Chromidotilapia mamonekenei has not been documented in the wild, and there is no formal captive breeding report for the species; what follows is the well-established pattern for the genus, which this fish is expected to share. Chromidotilapia are ovophilic biparental mouthbrooders: the female lays a relatively small clutch of comparatively large eggs on a cleaned surface, and the eggs are then taken up and incubated orally. Congeners typically produce modest clutches on the order of several dozen to a couple of hundred eggs — far fewer than the thousands a substrate-spawning cichlid of similar size might lay, the trade-off for the protection mouthbrooding affords. In several Chromidotilapia species the parents share oral incubation, with the eggs and later the free-swimming fry passed between or held by both partners; the genus is noted for this cooperative care, and after the young are released the pair continues to guard them, the fry darting back into a parent's mouth at any threat. Incubation lasts on the order of two to three weeks, after which well-developed, free-swimming young are released and shepherded by both parents. In aquaria, congeneric Chromidotilapia are bred by establishing a settled pair in soft, warm, acidic water and conditioning them on live and frozen foods; the same approach would be the starting point for anyone attempting this little-kept species, though it has yet to be reported as bred in captivity.
In the aquarium
Chromidotilapia mamonekenei is a rarity in the aquarium hobby. It is not a commercially traded fish; the few specimens that have reached aquarists came through specialist channels and the work of researchers such as Anton Lamboj, and there is no breeding report on record. It cannot honestly be called a beginner's fish, simply because so little husbandry experience with it has been published — but its needs can be extrapolated with confidence from its close relatives and its forest-river origins.
This is a small cichlid, so a single pair does not need a vast tank: a footprint of around 35.5–47 in (roughly a 55–65 US gal aquarium) gives a bonded pair room to hold a territory and lets a subordinate fish retreat, which matters because pair-bonding cichlids can turn on a poorly matched partner. Because the species comes from flowing rivers rather than still pools, it appreciates clean, well-oxygenated, moderately moving water — an efficient filter with some current suits it better than a stagnant tank. A sand or fine-gravel bed lets the fish forage and sift naturally; structure in the form of driftwood, leaf litter, roots and a few caves or flat stones provides the broken sightlines and spawning sites a pair will want.
Water should mirror the soft, warm, acidic-to-neutral forest streams of the Mayombe and coastal Gabon: a temperature around 73–81 °F, a pH from distinctly acidic to about neutral (roughly 5.0–6.8 is the genus comfort zone), and low hardness. Tannin-stained 'blackwater' conditions, easily produced with leaf litter or alder cones, suit it well and help colour the fish up. As with most forest-stream cichlids, stable, clean water and regular partial changes matter more than hitting any exact number. Diet is straightforward for an omnivorous sifter: a varied menu of quality sinking foods plus live or frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and the like — keeps the fish in condition and ready to breed. Tankmates, if any, should be peaceful and appropriately small West African forest-river fishes (small barbs, characins, or smaller catfishes); robust or boisterous cichlids are a poor match for a retiring, modestly sized species like this, and a breeding pair is best given a tank of their own.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chromidotilapia mamonekenei as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants (still the current listing as of the 2025 Red List version). The species carries no CITES listing and is evaluated as harmless and of low fishing vulnerability. Its small but apparently stable range across the forested coastal rivers of southwestern Gabon and the western Republic of the Congo, including the Dimonika Biosphere Reserve from which it was first described, underpins the assessment. That said, this is a narrow-range endemic of a single freshwater ecoregion, which makes it inherently more exposed than a widespread species. The forests and rivers of the Mayombe massif and the wider Lower Guinea coastal belt face the familiar regional pressures — logging and forest clearance, expanding agriculture, mining and associated sedimentation, and the general under-study and under-protection of Central-African freshwater habitats. None of these is documented as a present, species-level threat to this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which its long-term status should be read, and its limited distribution argues for continued attention.
