Taxonomy & naming
The small-eye cichlid was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1862 as Heros microphthalmus, in the fourth volume of his Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, on syntypes from the Río Motagua of Guatemala (material held at the Natural History Museum in London and the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin). The epithet, from Greek mikros ('small') and ophthalmos ('eye'), records the small eye Günther used to characterize the fish. Its generic history is the usual Middle American carousel: it was carried for much of the twentieth century in the wastebasket genus Cichlasoma (Conkel 1993), then assigned to Vieja by Burgess (2000) and Kullander (2003), and to a broadly drawn Theraps by Matamoros and colleagues (2009) and McMahan and colleagues (2010, 2015). The comprehensive phylogeny of Říčan, Piálek, Dragová & Novák (2016) showed that microphthalmus belongs with the 'checkmark' cichlids — godmanni and intermedium — rather than with the Theraps or Vieja type species, and placed it in the resurrected genus Chuco, Günther's own subgeneric name (from a Guatemalan vernacular word for cichlids). The Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) accordingly lists it as the valid Chuco microphthalmus (Günther 1862), a placement subsequently followed by Barrientos and colleagues (2023) and Lardizábal and colleagues (2025).
Morphology
Chuco microphthalmus is an elongate, laterally compressed heroine cichlid built for life in moving water — a lower, more streamlined profile than the deep-bodied Vieja and Paraneetroplus among which it once sat. Reported maximum size is moderate for the group, on the order of 8–10 in total length, with males the larger sex. The ground colour is a silvery to olive-grey overlaid by a series of dark vertical bars and, as in its checkmark relatives, dark markings on the rear flank and caudal peduncle that intensify with mood and breeding condition. The diagnostic feature flagged by its name is the comparatively small eye set in a fairly long, pointed head — a proportion that, together with the elongate body, suits a fish that holds station in current and works rocky substrate. Sexual dimorphism follows the heroine pattern: mature males grow larger, develop a steeper forehead and longer, more pointed dorsal- and anal-fin tips, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and often show heightened breeding coloration. Fine meristic detail and a modern redescription are limited; much of what is known still rests on Günther's account and scattered later treatments.
Habitat
The species is a fish of the Atlantic (Caribbean) slope of Central America, native to the Río Motagua basin and adjacent drainages of Guatemala and Honduras. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes give its range as the Motagua basin and Atlantic-slope Guatemala and Honduras; in aquarium and field reports it is associated with the Motagua and rivers such as the Río Copán on the Honduran side. This is rheophilic habitat — moderately to fast-flowing rivers and streams running over rock, gravel and sand, the kind of clear, well-oxygenated lotic water that the elongate-bodied Chuco cichlids favour as a group. Such rivers are warm lowland-to-foothill systems, typically in the mid-to-upper 20s °C, with neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard water reflecting the limestone and volcanic geology of the region, and a current strong enough to keep the substrate swept clean. The species shares these waters with other Atlantic-slope cichlids, characins and catfishes, holding to the flowing reaches and rocky structure rather than the still backwaters preferred by deeper-bodied relatives.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study is published for Chuco microphthalmus, but its body form and the feeding ecology of its relatives place it among the omnivorous, substrate-oriented heroines with a lean toward aufwuchs, plant matter and small invertebrates. The elongate, current-adapted Chuco and Theraps-grade cichlids characteristically graze the biofilm, algae and associated small invertebrates from rock and gravel surfaces in flowing water, supplementing this with aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and detritus. The small eye and pointed head suit close work over the substrate. FishBase places the genus low-to-mid on the food web as a flexible secondary consumer rather than a piscivore. In a fast-flowing river, microphthalmus would be expected to work the rocky bottom and structure for periphyton and the invertebrates living within it, taking whatever small prey the current delivers.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented in detail for Chuco microphthalmus, but the checkmark Chuco and their flowing-water relatives are biparental, pair-bonding substrate spawners, and there is no reason to expect microphthalmus differs. A male and female form a monogamous bond, select and clean a spawning site — typically a flat rock or sheltered surface among the substrate of a flowing reach — and defend a territory around it together. Courtship is the standard heroine repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading, jaw-locking trials of strength and cooperative substrate-cleaning, with the female taking on heightened breeding coloration as she ripens. As river fish, their breeding is tied to the seasonal cycle, generally favouring the warmer, more stable periods around the onset of the rains when food is abundant and flows are reliable but not in destructive spate.
Breeding
Chuco microphthalmus is, by extension from its relatives, an open biparental substrate spawner. The adhesive eggs are laid in rows on a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone or sheltered rock face in the current — and tended by both parents, the female concentrating on fanning and direct egg-care while the male patrols the perimeter, in the standard Central American division of labour. After hatching, the wrigglers are moved to one or more pits and, once free-swimming, the fry are herded and guarded as a school by both parents for several weeks. Clutch size has not been separately published for microphthalmus; relatives of comparable size produce broods of a few hundred eggs. As flowing-water spawners, the pair would favour sheltered substrate out of the strongest current for the nest, and the extended biparental care typical of the group protects eggs, larvae and free-swimming fry alike. No specialised cave- or tunnel-nesting is documented; this is a conventional rock-and-substrate breeder.
In the aquarium
Chuco microphthalmus is an occasional aquarium fish, kept by Central American cichlid specialists and traded under its scientific name or as collection-point fish such as 'Río Copán,' but it is far from a mainstream species. Husbandry follows the template for elongate, flowing-water Central Americans. A pair needs a long tank with a generous footprint — on the order of 59 in and 90 US gal or more — aquascaped with a sand or fine-gravel bottom, plenty of rock and water-worn stone for cover and territory boundaries, and strong, well-oxygenated water movement that mimics its river home. Water should be warm (around 77–82 °F), neutral-to-alkaline (pH roughly 7-8) and moderately hard, with the powerful filtration and current these rheophilic fish appreciate. They are moderately aggressive — less ferocious than the big guapotes but genuinely territorial, especially when breeding — so tankmates should be robust river cichlids and sturdy characins or catfish of similar size, with room to spread out. Feeding is straightforward: a varied omnivore diet of quality pellets, frozen and live invertebrates and a meaningful share of vegetable matter or algae-based foods suits its grazing, substrate-oriented natural diet. The common keeper mistakes are too small or too still a tank and too little vegetable content in the diet.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chuco microphthalmus as Data Deficient (2020), meaning there is not yet enough information on its distribution, population and threats to judge its extinction risk. It is a regional endemic of the Motagua basin and adjacent Atlantic-slope drainages of Guatemala and Honduras — a moderate range, but one squarely within a part of Central America under heavy and growing pressure. The Río Motagua in particular is among the most polluted rivers in the region, burdened by urban and industrial wastewater, agricultural runoff and notorious volumes of plastic and solid waste, alongside the wider regional pressures of deforestation, mining, sedimentation and the spread of introduced fishes such as African tilapias. None of these is documented as a population-level threat to microphthalmus specifically — the Data Deficient listing reflects exactly that gap — but a rheophilic, clean-water specialist in a degrading river system is the kind of fish that warrants monitoring. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial-fishery interest beyond the specialist ornamental trade.
