Quintana Roo - Motagua is the Caribbean front of Central America, running from the porous limestone shelf of the Yucatán Peninsula down through Belize to the Motagua River on the Guatemala-Honduras line. It is really two worlds stitched together. In the north there are almost no rivers at all: rain sinks straight into the karst and travels underground, surfacing in cenotes — collapse sinkholes that open onto the largest flooded cave systems on Earth. In the south the land rises into the Maya Mountains and the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, and real rivers appear — the Hondo, the Belize, the Polochic and Motagua — draining into Lago de Izabal and the Gulf of Honduras. Cichlids define the freshwater fauna across the whole sweep.
Geography & hydrology
FEOW places this ecoregion as number 202, delineated by Salvador Contreras Balderas and William Bussing and grouped among the tropical and subtropical coastal rivers draining to the Caribbean Sea. It runs along the Caribbean side of Central America from the Yucatán Peninsula south to the Motagua River at the Gulf of Honduras, taking in the southern half of Quintana Roo, the western edge of Campeche and a sliver of eastern Yucatán in Mexico, the whole of Belize, eastern Guatemala, and the western fringe of Honduras (FEOW Ecoregion 202).
The north end barely behaves like river country. The Yucatán Peninsula is a low, flat slab of Cretaceous and Tertiary limestone with thin soils, and the rock is so permeable that surface streams are nearly absent — rain that falls disappears into the ground within days. Regional recharge has been estimated at about 6 in per year, roughly 14% of the 550–1,19.5 in of annual rainfall, and that water moves seaward through fractures and dissolution conduits rather than over the land (Bauer-Gottwein et al., review of the Yucatán karst aquifer, Hydrogeology Journal, 2011). Where the cave roof has collapsed, the water table is exposed at the surface as a cenote. Divers have mapped hundreds of kilometers of flooded passage beneath the Riviera Maya — Ox Bel Ha and Sac Actun are among the longest underwater caves known — and the conduits broadly follow the position of the halocline, the boundary between the fresh surface lens and the salt water beneath. The Ring of Cenotes, a semicircular arc of sinkholes across northern Yucatán, traces the buried rim of the Chicxulub impact crater left by the asteroid that closed the Cretaceous.
Going south, the picture changes. The land rises off the limestone shelf into hills and then mountains; the highest ground, in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, tops 3,656 ft, and the Maya Mountains form an older granitic block in eastern Belize. Here the ecoregion finally carries proper rivers. The Río Hondo marks the Mexico-Belize border, the Belize River drains central Belize, and farther south the Polochic and Cahabón feed Lago de Izabal — the largest lake in the ecoregion — which empties through the Río Dulce and Amatique Bay into the Gulf of Honduras. The Motagua, Guatemala's longest river, runs the southern edge to the Caribbean along the Guatemala-Honduras frontier. Between the cenotes and the Motagua sits Bacalar, a long spring-fed lagoon in southern Quintana Roo where fresh and brackish water mix and where some of the largest freshwater microbialites (stromatolites) on the planet grow along the shore.
Water & habitat
The defining chemistry of the region comes straight off the limestone. Yucatán groundwater is hard and alkaline, charged with dissolved calcium carbonate, and in the clearest cenotes it is glass-clear because there is no suspended sediment to cloud it — the water has been filtered through rock. That clarity is also a vulnerability: a cenote is a window directly onto the aquifer, with little soil or surface flow to intercept whatever lands on it. The freshwater itself is a thin lens, generally less than 33–328 ft thick, floating on intruded seawater that reaches tens of kilometers inland. At the halocline the two layers meet, and cave depth tends to track it because carbonate dissolves fastest in that mixing zone — passages run 33–49 ft deep near the coast and deepen inland to recorded maxima around 236 ft (Bauer-Gottwein et al., 2011). The result is a stacked habitat: a sunlit freshwater cap where fishes live, a sharp chemocline, and dark saline water below.
Bacalar and the coastal lagoons sit at the seam between fresh and marine. Gamboa-Pérez and Schmitter-Soto sampled the littoral of Lake Bacalar through 1996 and described a shallow, clear, carbonate-rich lagoon where freshwater cichlids and euryhaline species overlap, sorted along gradients of salinity, vegetation and substrate (Environmental Biology of Fishes 54, 1999). The water's mineral load is what builds Bacalar's microbialite reefs, living carbonate mounds laid down by microbial mats.
The southern rivers are a different kind of clear water. Off the Maya Mountains and the Guatemalan highlands, streams run over sand, cobble and limestone bedrock, well oxygenated and moving — Juan Miguel Artigas Azas describes the habitat of Thorichthys aureus in the Cahabón and around Izabal as clear to very clear water, alkaline with pH above 7.5 and hardness of roughly 2–10 °dGH, over bottoms of sand, silt and sunken leaves, with the fish holding in shallow stretches no deeper than about 5 ft (Cichlid Room Companion). Temperatures sit mostly in the mid-20s Celsius, though thermal inflows such as Agua Caliente creek near Izabal can climb past 104 °F. Lago de Izabal adds a large, warm, low-elevation lake basin to the mix, fed by highland rivers and connected to the sea by the short Río Dulce, so its lower reaches carry a tidal, brackish influence. Across the ecoregion the through-line is limestone: hard, base-rich water, whether it surfaces in a cenote or runs down a Maya-mountain creek.
The cichlid fauna
FEOW built this ecoregion's boundaries largely on the cichlids — the delineation notes that the fauna is overwhelmingly Neotropical and that the lines were drawn around the distributions of those species, cichlids chief among them. The roster here is a cross-section of the heroine cichlids of the Maya world, from the cenote-and-lagoon north to the river systems of the Gulf of Honduras.
Two of the showiest belong to the genus Thorichthys, the firemouths, named for the flush of red on the throat and the dark opercular spots that flare out when they bluff a rival into thinking they are bigger than they are. Thorichthys meeki, the firemouth proper, is the wide-ranging Atlantic-slope species that turns up in Yucatán canals, ponds and lower river reaches and tolerates murky, warm, low-oxygen water. Thorichthys aureus, the golden or 'blue' firemouth, is the southern counterpart, found from the Río Grande in Belize through the Sarstoon, Cahabón and Izabal drainages to the Motagua basin in Honduras; unlike meeki it needs cool, clean, oxygenated water and breaks down quickly when quality slips. Both are pickers, working over sand and leaf litter in loose groups, excavating little pits as they sort edible matter from grit.
The larger heroines run the gradient from sifters to specialists. Cribroheros robertsoni is the methodical substrate-sifter of the group, combing systematically through sand. Vieja maculicauda, the blackbelt cichlid, is a big, deep-bodied omnivore of the lower rivers and brackish lagoons, grazing algae, plant detritus and small molluscs and ranging well into nearly marine salinities. Cincelichthys bocourti — the chisel-tooth cichlid, long known as Cichlasoma bocourti — is one of the ecoregion's endemics, a heavy-jawed species of the Izabal-Polochic-Motagua system. Chuco godmanni, the southern checkmark cichlid (also written Vieja godmanni), is likewise listed by FEOW among the regional endemics. So is Rocio spinosissima, the spiny cichlid (formerly Archocentrus spinosissimus), which FEOW flags as endemic to Lago de Izabal — a narrow-range species tied to that single lake basin. Its relative Rocio octofasciata, the Jack Dempsey of the aquarium trade, is the broader-ranging eight-banded cichlid of slow Yucatán and Belizean waters. Rounding out the roster, Cryptoheros spilurus, a small convict-type cichlid, occupies creeks and lagoon margins across Belize and the Yucatán base. Endemism here is real but tilted toward the south: the cenote north is a faunally impoverished frontier that tropical fishes have colonized from Central America, while the Izabal-Motagua rivers, older and more isolated, hold the narrow-range species — bocourti, godmanni and the Izabal-bound spinosissima among them (FEOW Ecoregion 202; Artigas Azas, Cichlid Room Companion; Gamboa-Pérez & Schmitter-Soto, 1999).
Conservation
The threats split along the same north-south line as the geography. In the Yucatán north, the danger is what reaches the aquifer. Because there is essentially no surface drainage and only thin soil, a cenote offers almost no natural filtration — sewage, fertilizer, fuel and household waste sink straight into the groundwater and travel through the cave conduits toward the coast. Work along the Riviera Maya has documented contaminants moving through the karst aquifer with the explosive growth of tourism, and recent surveys of Yucatán cenotes and a submarine groundwater discharge have detected anthropogenic and emerging contaminants in the water column (Metcalfe et al., Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2011; investigation of emerging contaminants in Yucatán karst water bodies, Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2025). The fishes that live in cenotes and the Bacalar lagoon system have nowhere upstream to retreat to: the polluted water is the habitat. Coastal development around Bacalar adds nutrient loading and physical disturbance to lagoons that took millennia to build their microbialite reefs.
The southern rivers face a blunter assault. The Motagua is one of the most plastic-choked rivers in the Americas; estimates put the plastic load reaching the Gulf of Honduras in the tens of millions of pounds a year, fouling the river that the endemic Vieja microphthalma and Hyphessobrycon milleri depend on and pushing waste downstream onto Honduran beaches (CNN/4ocean reporting; AIDA, 'Motagua River: a story of contamination'). Around Lago de Izabal the pressures are nickel mining, agro-chemical runoff from plantations, and untreated sewage — exactly the cocktail Artigas Azas singles out as a threat to Thorichthys aureus, and the same lake basin that holds narrow-range endemics like Rocio spinosissima and Cincelichthys bocourti (Cichlid Room Companion). Region-wide, a 2022 assessment of Central American freshwater fishes found about 28% of species threatened with extinction, with pollution, agriculture, aquaculture, land development and invasive species the dominant drivers, and a large fraction of species too data-deficient to assess (Matamoros et al., Diversity 14, 2022). Non-native fishes compound the problem: Nile tilapia, armored suckermouth catfishes (Pterygoplichthys) and largemouth bass are established across much of the region and compete with or prey on native cichlids. Several roster species — Thorichthys aureus among them — are currently listed only as Data Deficient by the IUCN, which is less reassurance than it sounds: it means the decline of a fish tied to clear, hard, increasingly stressed water is going unmeasured.
