Cichla thyrorus, the Trombetas peacock bass, is a large predatory cichlid known from a single stretch of clear, rock-strewn river in the Brazilian Amazon — the rio Trombetas above the falls at Cachoeira Porteira. Described only in 2006, it is one of the most geographically restricted peacock basses, named with a quiet pun: 'thyroros' is Greek for doorkeeper, a nod to the cataract ('porteira', gate) that walls off its range. It remains so little-studied that most of what we can say about its biology is read from its close relatives and from the handful of anglers and ichthyologists who have actually held one.

Taxonomy & naming

Cichla thyrorus was described by Sven O. Kullander and Efrem J. G. Ferreira in their 2006 revision of the genus, "A review of the South American cichlid genus Cichla, with descriptions of nine new species" (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(4):289–398), where it appears on page 350. The holotype is INPA 3503, held at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia in Manaus, with twenty-seven paratypes split between INPA and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM); the type locality is the Igarapé Caxipacoré in Pará, within the Trombetas drainage above Cachoeira Porteira. The epithet is a small joke in Greek — 'thyroros', a doorkeeper or porter — that plays on the Portuguese 'porteira' (gate), the cataract that guards the fish's range.

Cichla is the peacock-bass genus, and the earliest-diverging branch of the Neotropical cichlids; its members are unmistakable as a group but maddeningly similar to one another, separated largely by color pattern and scale counts that shift as the fish grows. Within that flock, Cichla thyrorus belongs to the large-bodied, spot-rowed assemblage alongside Cichla pinima, Cichla temensis, Cichla vazzoleri, and Cichla jariina. Its status is not entirely settled: the molecular, multi-locus study of Willis, Macrander, Farías & Ortí (2012) argued that only about eight biological entities should be recognized among the fifteen described Cichla species, and some workers (Willis et al. 2012; Sabaj et al. 2020) have treated thyrorus as a synonym of Cichla pinima. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes nonetheless carries thyrorus as a valid species, even though the molecular study of Willis et al. (2012) recommended synonymizing it with Cichla pinima — an honest reminder that genus-wide species limits in Cichla are still contested. In Brazil it is simply a tucunaré (Portuguese) or pavón (Spanish); English-language references call it the Trombetas peacock bass.

Morphology

This is a heavy, fusiform predator built like the rest of the large peacock basses. Kullander and Ferreira recorded a maximum of about 17 in (17 in) standard length for the type series, a figure FishBase carries as the documented maximum, though sport-fishing reports from the Trombetas describe much larger fish — anglers cite specimens of 17 lb and rod-and-reel weights near 19 lb (about 8.6 kg), which would imply total lengths well beyond the type material. Treat those big numbers as angler-grade rather than measured science; the documented size is the more conservative figure.

Color pattern is the genus's diagnostic currency, and thyrorus carries a distinctive one. Subadults show one to three complete vertical bars; in adults these break up into vertical rows of pale, dark-ringed (ocellated) blotches — three blotches in bars 1 and 2, two in bar 3 — set against rows of small light spots along the flank. Large adults typically develop a dark blotch on the anterodorsal process of the subopercle, a feature it shares with Cichla jariina and Cichla vazzoleri but which is absent in Cichla pinima and Cichla temensis. The cheeks are notably blotchy. Scale counts help separate it from look-alikes: the E1 row runs 77–90 scales (versus roughly 95–128 in vazzoleri, jariina, and temensis), and the lateral line is usually continuous rather than broken. A hobbyist field account puts the body depth at about 29 percent of length — a solidly built fish, not a slender one. As in other peacock basses, breeding males develop a pronounced nuchal hump on the forehead, a seasonal sexual character rather than a year-round one.

Habitat

Cichla thyrorus is endemic to Brazil and, as far as the record shows, to a single river system: the rio Trombetas in northern Pará, restricted to the drainage upstream of the great cataract at Cachoeira Porteira. The Trombetas is a clearwater river of the Guiana Shield, rising near the Guyana–Suriname border and running some 470 mi (466 mi) to the lower Amazon; its bed is rocky and studded with cataracts, and the first major one — where the Trombetas meets the Mapuera, roughly 160 mi (162 mi) from the mouth — is exactly the barrier the fish's name commemorates. That waterfall is almost certainly the reason thyrorus exists as a distinct, narrow-range species: it isolates the upper basin from the fishes downstream.

Within that water it favors the genus's preferred haunts — rapids and the broken water near falls, over rocky substrate, in the warm, soft, clear conditions typical of shield rivers. FishBase classes it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of tropical waters; no formal depth range has been published for the species, in keeping with how little it has been studied. Brazil's conservation assessors note that it is naturally infrequent and never very abundant even where it occurs, which fits a specialized rapids-dweller with a small range rather than a fish that has simply been overlooked.

Feeding

Like every peacock bass, Cichla thyrorus is a piscivore — a diurnal, sight-hunting predator that takes other fish as the core of its diet. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 4.3, squarely among top freshwater predators, and the IUCN assessment describes it plainly as a fish-eater of rapids and waterfall margins. No dedicated diet study exists for the species, but the pattern across the genus is consistent: juveniles take smaller prey including shrimp and insect larvae, and adults shift to an almost exclusively fish diet, ambushing or running down prey with short, explosive bursts. In the Trombetas rapids, that role makes it one of the apex piscivores of a fast-water community, the rocky-river counterpart of the better-known peacock basses that patrol the calmer Amazon channels.

Mating

Direct observations of courtship in Cichla thyrorus have not, to my knowledge, been published, so what follows is the well-documented genus pattern applied with appropriate caution. Peacock basses are monogamous and form pairs that bond and defend a territory together; courtship is tied to the seasonal hydrological cycle, and in the Trombetas — where water levels follow the Amazon's flood pulse, rising March to August and falling September to February — a rapids specialist would be expected to pair off and spawn in the lower-water window when rocky margins are exposed and stable. Sexes are externally similar for most of the year, but a breeding male develops a swollen nuchal hump on the nape that signals his readiness, the main visible cue distinguishing a courting male from his partner. Paired fish become markedly more aggressive and territorial as they prepare to spawn, a temperament anglers who have caught Trombetas thyrorus describe in the same breath as the violence with which the fish hits a lure.

Breeding

Cichla are substrate spawners, not mouthbrooders, and Cichla thyrorus is presumed to follow the genus blueprint that has been well documented in relatives such as Cichla ocellaris. A bonded pair selects and cleans a flat, firm surface — a rock or cleared patch of substrate — and the female lays a sheet of small, adhesive eggs onto it, often several thousand in larger species. Both parents stay: they fan and guard the clutch through hatching, then move the wrigglers to pits dug in the substrate, and finally shepherd the free-swimming fry in a tight, closely defended school, relocating them between pits as conditions demand. This intense, sustained biparental care — unusual among the big predatory cichlids — is the genus's signature, and there is no reason to expect the Trombetas fish to differ. No clutch count or spawning observation specific to thyrorus has been published; the reproductive picture here is the genus pattern read onto a species that has barely been studied in the wild.

In the aquarium

Honestly, this is not a fish most aquarists will ever keep, and that scarcity is the first thing to say: Cichla thyrorus is rarely exported and turns up only occasionally in the specialist monster-fish trade, usually mixed in among other large Cichla. Anything written about keeping it is really advice for keeping big peacock basses in general, and on that the experienced-keeper consensus is unforgiving. These are fast-growing, fast-swimming, high-protein predators that reach a foot and a half or more; the genus needs very large tanks — keepers and clubs repeatedly cite 100 gallons as a bare floor for a single fish and far more for adults or groups — with heavy filtration to handle a messy carnivore's waste, and warm, soft, slightly acidic water in line with its clearwater home.

The mistakes are predictable. Buyers fall for a cute, bar-striped juvenile and underestimate both the adult size and the aggression; a Trombetas peacock bass will hit food (even pellets) hard enough to startle tankmates, and will treat anything it can swallow as food. Tankmates, if any, should be large, robust South American fish that won't be eaten or bullied, and even then conspecific aggression is a real risk in anything but a huge system. It is emphatically not a beginner fish, not a community fish, and not a fish to buy on impulse.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List rates Cichla thyrorus as Least Concern, in an assessment carried out in 2018 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022. The assessors found no significant threats to the population and recorded a low but stable picture: the fish is endemic to the upper rio Trombetas in Pará, naturally infrequent and not abundant, with an unknown population trend. It is fished and sold as food at the national and even international level, but there is no targeted conservation program for it and no record of it occurring inside any formal protected area — so its protection rests entirely on the remoteness of its range.

That range sits in a basin that is far from untouched. The Trombetas is one of the better-conserved Amazon tributaries, much of it isolated by cataracts and set aside as indigenous land, the Trombetas Biological Reserve, and the Saracá-Taquera National Forest. But it is also the site of major bauxite mining around Porto Trombetas — a rapidly growing town with its own shipping infrastructure — extensive lower-river commercial fishing that supplies the Oriximiná and Santarém markets, and longstanding proposals for a sizeable dam near Porto Trombetas. For a fish confined to the rocky rapids above Cachoeira Porteira, dams and the altered flow they bring are the threat that should concern conservationists most, because they strike directly at the fast-water habitat the species depends on. This places thyrorus in the broad pattern Neotropical ichthyologists have long described (e.g. Lowe-McConnell's work on South American fish communities and the Kullander treatments in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, 2003): most Amazon cichlids are formally Least Concern or simply not yet evaluated, pressured by ornamental and food-fish collection and by habitat change rather than facing imminent collapse. The honest summary is that Cichla thyrorus is genuinely Least Concern today, but it is a narrow-range, naturally uncommon endemic in a basin under real and growing development pressure — secure for now, not invulnerable.
