Taxonomy & naming
Cichla jariina was described by Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander and Brazilian ichthyologist Efrem J. G. Ferreira in their 2006 monograph "A review of the South American cichlid genus Cichla, with descriptions of nine new species" (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(4):289-398) — a single paper that nearly doubled the number of recognized peacock basses. The species epithet is geographic: jariina honors the type locality, the Rio Jari, and is treated as an adjective. The type series was collected in the State of Pará, in the Rio Jari downstream of the Cachoeira Santo Antônio (the Santo Antônio rapids), and the name is registered in ZooBank.
Within Cichla, jariina sits in the so-called pinima group — the assemblage of large, spotted species that also includes Cichla pinima, Cichla temensis, Cichla thyrorus, and Cichla vazzoleri, all of which replace their juvenile vertical bars with rows of pale spots and large ocellated blotches as adults. That group has proven taxonomically slippery: molecular work has argued that the genetic structure does not cleanly match Kullander and Ferreira's morphological species, with species-delimitation analysis (Willis, 2017) grouping jariina within Cichla pinima sensu lato — a placement reiterated by Quadros et al. (2020) — suggesting the evolutionary relationships among these fish are more tangled than the 2006 boundaries imply. For now, though, Cichla jariina stands as a valid species in the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. English-language hobby and citizen-science sources call it the Jari peacock bass, after its home river; in Brazil it falls under the broad common name tucunaré shared by all peacock basses.
Morphology
This is a substantial fish but not a giant by peacock-bass standards: the largest measured specimen is about 13.5 in standard length (around 13 in, excluding the tail), modest next to river monsters like Cichla temensis that exceed three feet. The body is the classic fusiform peacock-bass shape — elongate, laterally compressed, built for a quick lunge.
In adults the juvenile vertical bars give way to distinct longitudinal rows of light spots along the flank, with large dark, light-ringed (ocellated) blotches standing in for the old bars. The single most reliable field mark is in the fins, not the body: Cichla jariina is unique in the genus for the near-total absence of scales on its dorsal fin, where its relatives carry at least a patch of squamation. It also runs a very high lateral scale count — roughly 100 to 108 scales in the E1 row, against 77 to 90 in the otherwise similar Cichla thyrorus — and tends toward a lower fin and vertebral count (modally XV,16 in the dorsal and 18+16=34 vertebrae, versus the XV,17 and 35-plus vertebrae more typical of the genus). Like Cichla pinima, it shows an ocellated black spot just below the soft dorsal fin. Color in life follows the peacock-bass template — greenish to bronze flanks, a paler belly, and the diagnostic caudal ocellus — and intensifies in breeding fish; the one known breeding male carried three white-dotted ocellated blotches marking the first two bar positions. Reliable sexing notes for this specific species are thin, but male peacock basses generally develop a nuchal hump when in spawning condition.
Habitat
Cichla jariina is, as far as the record shows, endemic to the Rio Jari — a clearwater northern tributary of the lower Amazon that drains off the Guiana Shield and forms part of the border between the Brazilian states of Pará and Amapá. The original description records it only from the stretch in and around the Santo Antônio rapids; the IUCN assessment maps its native range across both Pará and Amapá but still within that one river system. That makes it one of the most geographically restricted peacock basses, a sharp contrast to wide-ranging congeners spread across the Amazon and Orinoco.
FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical species. The habitat is a fast, rocky, cataract-studded reach of an upland-fed river rather than the still floodplain lagoons many peacock basses favor — the Jari tumbles over the Santo Antônio falls before reaching the Amazon lowlands. In-situ water-chemistry measurements specific to Cichla jariina have not been published, but Shield-draining clearwater rivers of this region are characteristically warm, low in dissolved minerals, and mildly acidic, which is the broad envelope the species evolved in. Tellingly, both the describing authors and the conservation assessors note that the fish is naturally infrequent and low in abundance even on its home river — scarcity here looks like a baseline, not a decline.
Feeding
No diet study targets Cichla jariina directly, so its ecology has to be read from the genus, which is unusually consistent on this point. Peacock basses are apex-ish diurnal piscivores — ambush-and-chase predators that hold near structure such as submerged logs, rock, and channel edges and explode onto smaller fishes. FishBase places Cichla jariina at a trophic level of about 4.2, squarely in the top-predator band, an inference drawn from its size and close relatives rather than from gut contents.
In a rapids-dominated river like the Jari, the obvious prey base is the small characins and other fishes of the rocky-riffle and clearwater community, taken by the genus's signature burst attack. As large, comparatively scarce predators, peacock basses sit near the top of their local food web and help structure the abundance of the smaller fishes below them — the same role that has made introduced Cichla so disruptive when they are moved outside their native range. Within Cichla, jariina is part of the earliest-diverging lineage of Neotropical cichlids; cytogenetic work confirms it retains the ancestral karyotype of 2n = 48 acrocentric chromosomes shared across the genus.
Mating
Direct observations of courtship in Cichla jariina are essentially limited to a single breeding male recovered in the type material, so the account here is drawn from the well-studied biology of the genus and should be read as inference. Peacock basses pair off seasonally, and the run-up to spawning is when the sexes become most distinguishable: males of the genus typically develop a pronounced nuchal hump — a fatty forehead swelling — and intensified, contrasty coloration as they come into condition. The one known breeding Cichla jariina male showed exactly this kind of heightened pattern, carrying brightened, white-dotted ocellated blotches at the first two bar positions on its flank.
Outside of the breeding season, peacock basses are loosely social as juveniles and become more solitary and combative as they mature, with paired adults defending a stretch of structure against rivals — a pattern keepers of other Cichla describe repeatedly. The pair bond that forms ahead of spawning is the foundation of the intense biparental custody that follows. How precisely each of these traits holds for the Jari endemic is unverified, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than papering over.
Breeding
Breeding behavior for Cichla jariina specifically is undocumented beyond the single known breeding male in the type series, so the following is generalized from the well-studied reproduction of the genus. Peacock basses are biparental substrate spawners, not mouthbrooders: a pair cleans a hard surface — flat rock, a submerged log, a cleared patch of bottom — and the female lays an adhesive plaque of eggs onto it, after which both parents guard the clutch. Once the eggs hatch and the young become free-swimming, the parents shepherd the dense, mobile school of fry through the shallows, an energetic and territorial form of custodial care that continues well past hatching.
Studies of congeners report rapid early development — embryogenesis on the order of 72 hours — and early maturity, often within roughly a year. Combined with the diligent guarding of fry schools, these life-history traits make peacock basses formidable colonizers wherever they are introduced, even as they leave each individual pair tied down to defending one site through the whole brooding cycle. For Cichla jariina, a single-river endemic, this reproductive strategy plays out entirely within the rocky clearwater reaches of the Rio Jari; whether spawning is tied to a particular flood or low-water season there has not been documented.
In the aquarium
Cichla jariina is effectively absent from the aquarium trade — it is a rare, range-restricted fish that does not show up in shipments — so there is no species-specific keeping literature, and the advice below is generalized from experienced peacock-bass keepers and should be treated as such. The headline is honest: peacock basses are not beginner fish. Even this comparatively modest species would reach a foot or more, and the genus as a whole runs 15 to 30-plus inches; veteran keepers on MonsterFishKeepers and Cichlid-Forum routinely call for tanks measured in feet of footprint, not gallons alone, with the largest species needing 10-foot tanks and even smaller peacock basses wanting a multi-foot base.
The consistent, cross-keeper guidance for the genus is worth repeating because it is hard-won: keep them in groups of three or more, where aggression is diffused and the fish are visibly calmer and more outgoing than lonely individuals that hide and sulk; provide heavy filtration and disciplined water changes for messy, high-protein predators; and pellet-train early — often by stuffing pellets into shrimp or weaning fish off frozen food — so water quality stays manageable. Water should be warm, soft, and slightly acidic, matching the clearwater origin. The recurring beginner mistakes are predictable: undersized tanks, relying on live feeders that import parasites and disease, and underestimating both the adult size and the speed of growth. None of this is a sales pitch — a peacock bass is a long-term, large-volume commitment, and Cichla jariina in particular is a fish to admire in its river far more than one to expect in a living room.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cichla jariina as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio); published 2022). The assessors' reasoning is specific and measured: the species is endemic to the Rio Jari and naturally uncommon there, but the two obvious human pressures are not judged severe enough to threaten it. The Usina Hidrelétrica Santo Antônio do Jari — a hydroelectric dam built within its range — is noted but discounted as a significant threat because the fish occurs both upstream and downstream of the reservoir; and although Cichla jariina is taken in sport fishing, that harvest is not considered a population-level risk. Population trend is listed as unknown.
That individual verdict has to be placed in the wider Amazonian context, which the Neotropical literature frames carefully. The genus Cichla was comprehensively revised by Kullander and Ferreira (2006), and the regional fish fauna is catalogued in works such as Reis et al.'s Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003); Lowe-McConnell's classic ecology of tropical fish communities (1987, with her 1991 syntheses) remains a touchstone for how these river systems function. The consensus across that body of work is that most Amazonian cichlids are Least Concern or Not Evaluated, and that the dominant pressures are habitat alteration — damming, deforestation in the catchment, and changing flow and sediment regimes — and ornamental and food-fish collection, rather than outright population collapse. For a Guiana-Shield clearwater endemic like Cichla jariina, the honest summary is this: the species itself is currently secure, but it lives in exactly one river that is already dammed and sits in a basin under mounting hydropower and land-use pressure, so a stable Red List category is not the same as an untroubled future. The narrowness of its range is its real vulnerability — a single-river fish has nowhere else to be.
