Crenicichla hu is a small, almost uniformly black pike cichlid known from a single clear-flowing stream in the Argentine province of Misiones. Described in 2010 by a Czech-Argentine team, it is the basal member of the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex, a tight cluster of pike cichlids endemic to the tributaries of the middle Paraná and Iguazú that has become a textbook case of rapid, parallel ecological speciation in rivers. Its name is the Guaraní word for black — a direct reference to the dusky, almost carotenoid-free ground colour that sets it apart from every other pike cichlid in the La Plata basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla hu was described in 2010 by Lubomír Piálek, Oldřich Říčan, Jorge Casciotta and Adriana Almirón in the journal Zootaxa (2537: 33–46), from material collected in November 2007 in the arroyo Piray-Miní, a left-bank tributary of the río Paraná in Misiones, northeastern Argentina. The holotype (MACN-ict 9429, a 4.5 in female) is held at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales in Buenos Aires, with paratype series at the same museum and at the Museo de La Plata. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid and has never placed it in synonymy. Crenicichla is the largest and most widely distributed genus of Neotropical cichlids, with roughly 80 to well over 100 species depending on how undescribed forms are counted; it has traditionally been split into informal species groups. Crenicichla hu belongs to the Crenicichla lacustris group in the broad sense and, more precisely, sits at the very base of the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex — a cluster of pike cichlids endemic to the middle Paraná and Iguazú drainages of Misiones, Paraguay and adjacent Brazil. The describers' own ND2 mitochondrial analysis recovered Crenicichla hu, Crenicichla tesay, Crenicichla yaha and Crenicichla mandelburgeri as a strongly supported Paraná-endemic clade, with Crenicichla hu in the basal position. Subsequent multilocus and phylogenomic work by Piálek, Říčan, Burress and colleagues (2012, 2018, 2019, 2021) has made this complex famous as a model of replicated adaptive radiation, in which the same suite of ecomorphs — deep-bodied, generalist, and elongate pelagic forms — has evolved in parallel within the Paraná and, independently, in the unrelated Crenicichla missioneira complex of the río Uruguay. Misiones is the most endemic-rich ichthyological region in Argentina, and Crenicichla hu was one of three pike cichlids (with Crenicichla tesay and Crenicichla yaha) described from its Paraná tributaries within a few years.

Morphology

Crenicichla hu is a small pike cichlid: the type series ran from about 3–6 in standard length, FishBase records a maximum of 6 in SL for a male and 4.5 in SL for a female, and the species matures well under 6 in. The body is elongate but not extremely so for the genus — body depth is 21.5 to 25.6 percent of standard length — with a short, bluntly pointed snout, a slightly prognathous lower jaw, and a head a little deeper than it is wide. The single most striking feature, and the one that names the fish, is its colour: live specimens are dark grey, dark brown, or nearly black overall, almost entirely lacking the carotenoid and structural (reflective) colours that brighten most cichlids. Superimposed on that dusky ground are 7 to 9 irregular black blotches along the flank. The species lacks the dark lateral band of Crenicichla mandelburgeri, Crenicichla vittata and Crenicichla jaguarensis, the humeral spot of the saxatilis-group pikes, the scattered small dots of Crenicichla tesay and Crenicichla iguassuensis, and the narrow vertical double-bars of Crenicichla mandelburgeri and Crenicichla niederleinii — a suite of absences that, together with a relatively low lateral scale count of 47 to 54 in the E1 row, diagnoses it. Sexual dimorphism is clear in the dorsal fin: adult females carry a bold, irregular pattern of wide black-and-white longitudinal stripes and blotches, the black areas edged in a milky white, and some females show a faint orange patch behind the pectoral fin. The fins are otherwise as dark as the body. Counts from the description include XVIII–XXII dorsal spines with 10–13 soft rays, II–III anal spines with 8–10 soft rays, and 35 total vertebrae.

Habitat

Crenicichla hu is, as far as is known, a single-stream endemic: every recorded specimen comes from the arroyo Piray-Miní, a left-bank tributary of the río Paraná in northern Misiones, Argentina, at roughly 26°20′S 53°52′W. The Piray-Miní lies in the part of Misiones whose Paraná and Iguazú tributaries are cut off from the main rivers by waterfalls near their mouths, isolation that has produced a remarkable concentration of narrow-range endemic fishes. The describers characterise the type stream as clear, rapidly flowing water of variable depth, from about 1–5 ft, over a bottom of mud, sand and — predominantly — stones, with only scattered patches of submerged vegetation. This is a clearwater, rheophilic (current-loving) habitat rather than the still floodplain lakes favoured by many lowland cichlids. No in-situ chemistry (pH, conductivity, temperature) was published with the description; as a subtropical upland stream of the middle Paraná system, the water is expected to be soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral, and seasonally warm, but specific field measurements for this locality are not on record. The wider Crenicichla mandelburgeri complex occupies comparable middle-Paraná and Iguazú tributaries, each stream tending to hold its own endemic pike cichlid or species pair.

Feeding

No gut-content study of Crenicichla hu has been published, but its feeding can be read confidently from its genus and its anatomy. Pike cichlids are ambush predators: elongate, large-mouthed fishes that lie among stones and roots and dart out to seize prey, taking fish, large aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans and other invertebrates. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.3 for Crenicichla hu, consistent with a carnivore that combines small fishes with a substantial invertebrate component rather than a pure piscivore. Its dentition fits this: an outer row of enlarged, slightly movable unicuspid (canine-like) teeth on the premaxilla and dentary for gripping prey, backed by inner rows of fully depressible teeth, and a lower pharyngeal plate bearing stout recurved unicuspids and crenulated bicuspids for processing what it catches. Within its stony, fast-flowing stream, Crenicichla hu functions as a small benthic predator of the riffle and run habitats. Notably, the Crenicichla mandelburgeri complex to which it belongs has repeatedly evolved away from this ancestral robust ambush ecomorph toward more specialised forms — including elongate, pelagic open-water predators — so trophic flexibility is a hallmark of its close relatives.

Mating

The courtship and pair behaviour of Crenicichla hu have not been observed or reported; it is a recently described, range-restricted wild fish with essentially no presence in aquarium culture. Inferences must come from the genus, which is consistent in its reproductive biology. Pike cichlids are monogamous, biparental fishes that form pairs and defend a territory around a spawning site. In Crenicichla the female is typically the more boldly marked sex at breeding — and in Crenicichla hu it is indeed the female that carries the conspicuous black-and-white dorsal-fin pattern, with males remaining plainer — a dimorphism that across the genus is bound up with female display during pair formation and brood care. The marked dorsal-fin signal of female Crenicichla hu therefore almost certainly plays a courtship and pair-bonding role, as it does in better-studied congeners, but the specifics of its mating behaviour remain undocumented.

Breeding

Spawning has not been documented in Crenicichla hu, in the wild or in captivity. The genus is uniform enough that the broad pattern can be stated with confidence: pike cichlids are biparental substrate and cave spawners. A pair cleans a sheltered surface — typically the roof or wall of a rock crevice, a hollow under a stone, or a similar cavity — onto which the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs; both parents then guard the eggs and the resulting wrigglers and free-swimming fry, the female tending the brood closely while the male patrols the territory. Clutch size is not recorded for Crenicichla hu specifically; congeneric pike cichlids of this small size typically produce on the order of a few hundred eggs (genus-typical, undocumented for this species). Given the species' stony, fast-flowing habitat, natural spawning sites are very likely the undersides and crevices of the stones that dominate its streambed. No data exist on egg size, incubation time, fry development or breeding triggers for this particular species.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla hu is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a narrow-range Argentine endemic described only in 2010, with no established presence in the ornamental trade and no published captive husbandry or breeding accounts; the related, more widespread members of its complex (such as Crenicichla mandelburgeri) are themselves only occasional in specialist collections. Anyone who did encounter it would be keeping a small, current-loving pike cichlid from a clear, stony, fast-flowing subtropical stream, and the honest guidance is to recreate exactly that. A long tank with strong, well-oxygenated flow, a substrate of sand and rounded stones, and abundant rockwork and crevices for territory and refuge would suit it; water should be clean, soft to moderately hard and near-neutral, at warm subtropical temperatures, with the powerful filtration that current-adapted fishes expect. As an ambush carnivore it would take meaty live and frozen foods — and, as with all pike cichlids, would treat any tankmate small enough to swallow as prey while needing space and broken sightlines to temper intraspecific aggression, especially around a breeding pair. None of this is tested for Crenicichla hu itself; it is extrapolated from the genus. The more important point is conservation: this is an Endangered single-stream endemic, and it is not a fish that should be collected from the wild for the hobby.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla hu as Endangered (EN), under criterion B1ab(iii), in an assessment by J. Liotta dated 22 November 2020 and published in 2022. The listing rests on the species' extreme localisation: it is known only from the arroyo Piray-Miní, with an extent of occurrence of just 1,615 mi², and there is no population estimate. The threats the assessment identifies are habitat-based — modification of water courses, dams and other hydraulic works, habitat fragmentation, poaching, and the destruction of natural vegetation across the catchment. No conservation actions are currently in place; the Red List recommends site protection and management together with further research on the species. The fish has no CITES listing and no commercial fishery value. Its plight is shared by much of the Misiones pike-cichlid fauna: these are single-stream or single-drainage endemics whose entire world ranges are small upland tributaries of the heavily dammed Paraná and Iguazú, leaving them acutely exposed to dam construction, deforestation and changes in flow within a single basin.
