Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla cyclostoma was described in 1986 by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg, in a paper treating the pike cichlids of the Tocantins River that named four new species at once — Crenicichla astroblepa, Crenicichla compressiceps, Crenicichla cyclostoma and Crenicichla jegui. The material had been gathered between 1980 and 1984 by the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) during surveys assessing the ecological impact of the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam, supplemented by collections of the ichthyologist Michel Jégu. Ploeg based the species on 34 specimens from several localities; the holotype (INPA 854) came from the Tocantins at Tucuruí, below the dam site. The Catalog of Fishes records the type series across INPA and the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam, and the name remains valid as Crenicichla cyclostoma Ploeg, 1986. The fish sits in the reticulata species group, the assemblage of plump, broad-headed, dorsally-eyed pikes long known to hobbyists by the old subgeneric name Batrachops Heckel, 1840 — a name that ichthyologists have repeatedly synonymised with and resurrected from Crenicichla. Independent work by Kullander and by Ploeg, both 1986, settled the fish into Crenicichla on the basis of dentition. That original 1986 paper needed its own later correction: one of the other three species it described in the same batch, Crenicichla astroblepa, turned out on Ploeg's more extensive 1991 re-examination to overlap so closely with the already-known Crenicichla cametana that it is now treated as a synonym of it — a reminder of how difficult this fauna was, and largely remains, to resolve from limited series. A 2023 integrative phylogenetic revision by Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández split the long-unwieldy genus, retaining Teleocichla and erecting four new genera — Wallaciia, Saxatilia, Hemeraia and Lugubria — with the reticulata-group pikes falling into Saxatilia; under that scheme the species would read Saxatilia cyclostoma. The combination is not yet universally adopted, and Crenicichla cyclostoma remains the name in widest use.
Morphology
This is a small pike cichlid by the standards of a genus whose giants exceed 12 in. Ploeg's original series topped out at 4 in SL, FishBase lists a maximum of 4 in SL, the field collector Frank Warzel reported a maximum around 5 in for fish he examined at the type locality, and the aquarist Vin Kutty, who kept imported fish in the 1990s, described it as reaching about five inches (~5 in) total length — a consistent cluster of figures, though Konings' Enjoying Cichlids tabulates a higher maximum of 6.5 in. Whichever figure is used, it is the smallest species of its rheophilic 'jegui' subgroup. The body is the elongate, cylindrical pike-cichlid form, but cyclostoma is laterally compressed, like its sympatric neighbour Crenicichla compressiceps, where its other relatives Crenicichla jegui and Crenicichla cametana are dorsally flattened — an unusual pairing of adaptations to consider given how wide-mouthed most other Batrachops-group species are. The head is broad and the eyes set high, the classic 'frog-headed' Batrachops look. Its diagnostic feature, and the source of its name, is the small, rounded mouth set with very thick lips — the lower lip distinctly larger than the upper, so that viewed from directly above the mouth reads as an almost perfect circle — proportionally far smaller than the wide gape of the piscivorous pikes around it. Oddly for such a small mouth, the outer jaw carries conspicuously large teeth, sometimes visible even when the mouth is closed. The dorsal fin is elongate and dark with a pale margin, and there is a black spot at the base of the caudal fin; unlike the spangled saxatilis-group pikes, the frog-headed species lack a humeral (shoulder) ocellus. Coloration outside of breeding is a muted gray to brown, which is much of the reason these fish never became popular, but the species can shift that pattern rapidly in social confrontations: field observation describes the dominant fish in a face-off turning to a lighter body colour crossed by vertical bands, while the subordinate darkens to gray with a pale horizontal line. Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern shared across the frog-headed and rheophilic pikes: ripe females develop a bright red band along the trailing edge of the soft dorsal fin (and sometimes along the flank), while males tend to grow larger and develop dark spotting toward the rear of the soft dorsal.
Habitat
Crenicichla cyclostoma is endemic to the lower Tocantins River drainage in the State of Pará, Brazil, within the wider Amazon basin — a narrow range for a Neotropical cichlid, documented at Tucuruí (the type locality, below the dam site) and at Marabá further upstream, where field collectors reported the species from a 1990 survey trip. It is a strictly rheophilic (current-loving) fish, living a secretive life among and beneath rocks in fast-flowing water and rapids rather than in the still backwaters favoured by its frog-headed relatives. Its adaptation to turbulent, highly oxygenated water runs deep: like the other rheophilic Tocantins pikes it has a reduced swim bladder, trading buoyancy for life on the bottom of rapids, though cyclostoma is a comparatively competent swimmer next to the near-sedentary Crenicichla jegui. FishBase classes it as a tropical freshwater, benthopelagic species with an environment from about 75 °F upward. In-situ chemistry for the Tocantins itself was measured by Mayland (1988) at pH 6.6 and a conductivity of only 40 µS/cm — a soft, mineral-poor, slightly acid river typical of clearwater Amazon tributaries — and that figure is consistent with the roughly pH 6.4 collectors report from comparable whitewater rapids elsewhere in the system. As a rapids specialist it occupies shallow, broken-water river channels; depth is not formally tabulated, but these are shallow fast-water habitats rather than deep-river fish.
Feeding
Within its group, Crenicichla cyclostoma is the odd one out: where Crenicichla jegui and Crenicichla cametana are dedicated piscivores that ambush fish from the rocks, cyclostoma is the least predatory of the assemblage. Its small, round, thick-lipped mouth is the giveaway — a mouth built not for swallowing fish but for picking small prey. No stomach-content study of the species has been published, but field observers who have watched it in its rock shelters report it as effectively a caddisfly-larva specialist, describing it feeding solely or almost solely on caddisfly (Trichoptera) larvae, a food source abundant clinging to rocks in fast Amazon water; that specific inference has been reported independently more than once in the literature, alongside the broader, more cautious suggestion that its diet spans aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates generally, gleaned from the rocky substrate of the rapids. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a small carnivore that takes invertebrates rather than fish. In its habitat it forages low among the rocks of fast water, sharing the rapids with the larger, fish-eating pikes but partitioning the food supply by working a smaller prey size. In aquaria it has proven readily willing to accept most prepared foods, an unusual trait among rheophilic pikes that more often hold out for live or frozen fare; imported fish have specifically been reported taking frozen foods with no fuss once settled in.
Mating
Specific courtship and pair-formation behaviour has not been documented for Crenicichla cyclostoma — it has rarely been kept and, as far as the literature records, never bred. What is known comes from its close relatives in the frog-headed and rheophilic reticulata group, which share a consistent breeding biology. In those species the sexes become distinguishable as fish mature: ripe females flush a vivid red band along the upper edge of the dorsal fin, a signal that appears seasonally and seems independent of the presence of a male, hinting at a seasonally-cued reproductive cycle in the wild. Males grow larger and develop posterior dorsal-fin spotting. Like pike cichlids generally these fish are strongly territorial — the frog-headed species notably more so than the spangled saxatilis-group pikes — defending caves, rock crevices and hollow wood vigorously. Aggression management is the central problem in pairing them: keepers of related species report that compatible pairs form only with difficulty, and a mismatched pairing in confined quarters routinely ends with one fish killing the other.
Breeding
There are no published reports of Crenicichla cyclostoma being bred in captivity, and its reproduction in the wild has not been described — a reflection of how seldom the species has ever entered the hobby. Its biology can be inferred from its relatives. All Crenicichla are biparental cave or crevice spawners: the pair selects a sheltered, enclosed site — a hole in rock or driftwood, or in aquaria a length of pipe or a cave — onto which the female attaches an adhesive clutch, with both parents guarding the eggs and the subsequent free-swimming fry. Documented clutches in the frog-headed and rheophilic reticulata group are modest; congeners of similar size are reported to lay on the order of one to several hundred eggs (a genus-typical, not species-confirmed, figure for cyclostoma). The female tends and fans the eggs while the male patrols the territory, and the pair shepherds the wrigglers and fry, which retreat into the spawning cave at any disturbance. For a fish of seasonally pulsed rapids, the red breeding flag carried by ripe females of the group suggests spawning is timed to the annual flood and flow cycle of the Tocantins.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla cyclostoma is among the rarest pike cichlids in the hobby. It reached North America only sporadically — Vin Kutty received fish in the 1993 wave of experimental exports of eastern-Brazilian rapids fishes — and has scarcely been seen since; today, with its range under dams, it is effectively unobtainable. Anyone who does encounter it is an advanced keeper, and the husbandry notes below are drawn from the few accounts of cyclostoma and its rheophilic relatives.
The overriding requirement is fast, warm, highly oxygenated, clean water. These are rapids fish: they need strong filtration and good aeration, generous regular water changes, and stable warmth — the rheophilic Tocantins pikes are not the hardy, neglect-tolerant fish that the still-water Batrachops are, and they are notably prone to ich, which can take hold and kill quickly once it appears, so keepers are advised to keep medication on hand. Paradoxically, while they need well-oxygenated water they dislike being parked directly in a powerhead's blast; aim for high turnover and surface agitation without pinning the fish in a jet. Keep the temperature warm (mid-to-upper 20s °C); unlike the cold-tolerant southern frog-headed pikes, the rheophilic species show discomfort below about 70 °F. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water of the kind found in clear and whitewater Amazon rapids (its home river runs around pH 6.6 and very low mineral content) suits them best, but water chemistry appears to matter comparatively little for this particular species once flow, oxygenation and cleanliness are right: field accounts describe it adapting readily to captive conditions and even tolerating alkaline water, an unusually wide chemistry tolerance for a rheophilic pike from such a soft, mineral-poor home river. Adequate rock shelter matters more than getting the pH exact.
Décor should be built around the rocks and hollow wood of a rapids bed: piles of smooth stones, caves and tubes that provide each fish a defensible retreat out of sight of its neighbours. Cover and broken sightlines are the principal tool for managing the territorial aggression that defines the genus. Of the rheophilic Tocantins pikes, cyclostoma is reported to be the least aggressive and relatively hardy, adapting easily to most tap water and accepting prepared foods readily — but it is still a pike, and conspecifics should be given room and refuges. A small mouth and modest adult size make it far less of a threat to tankmates than its fish-eating cousins; robust, fast mid-water dither fish (large hatchetfish, sturdy tetras) help settle it and occupy the upper water it ignores. The species has never been spawned in captivity, so any breeding attempt would be genuinely original work.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla cyclostoma as Critically Endangered (criterion A4c; assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio, published 2022). The species is a narrow-range rapids endemic of the lower Tocantins, and that habitat is being systematically destroyed by hydropower. After the Tucuruí dam was built the species was no longer recorded in the reservoir area; the remainder of its known range falls within the projected flood zones of two further planned dams, Santa Isabel and Marabá. The assessment projects that the inundation of these reservoirs would cost the species its entire area of occupation — a 100% population loss — precisely because it is confined to fast-flowing rapids, the one habitat a reservoir obliterates. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The case is a sharp illustration of the wider crisis on the Tocantins and across Amazonia, where dam construction fragments rivers, drowns rapids and converts flowing reaches into still impoundments, eliminating the specialised rheophilic fauna — pike cichlids, loricariid catfishes and others — that depends on running water and exists nowhere else.
