Hybridization watchi

Crenicichla lepidota, the two-spot pike cichlid, is a medium-sized, torpedo-shaped predator of the Paraguay–Paraná and La Plata systems and the coastal rivers of southern Brazil. One of the first pike cichlids ever named, it is the elongate ambush hunter the genus is built around — patient, lockjawed, and quick — yet it is also among the most forgiving members of Crenicichla to keep, tolerating cooler, harder, more neutral water than most of its Amazonian relatives. A dark eyespot ringed in pale gold low on the caudal-fin base, echoed by a humeral blotch on the shoulder, gives the fish both its trade name and a flash of false-eye deception when it bolts for cover.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla lepidota was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840, in the same foundational paper in which he erected the genus Crenicichla itself — it is one of the original nine species Heckel placed in the genus. The type material came from the Rio Guaporé in Mato Grosso, Brazil, on the upper reaches of the Madeira–Amazon system; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes designates a lectotype (NMW 33101) and a series of paralectotypes in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien. The species name is the only one Heckel ever gave it — there is no original-genus shuffle, the fish having stood as Crenicichla lepidota for nearly two centuries. Within the genus it anchors the so-called lepidota complex (in older hobby literature lumped with the lacustris group), the assemblage of subtropical pikes of the Paraguay, Paraná, Uruguay and La Plata drainages and the rivers of Rio Grande do Sul. Kullander's 1982 revision of the La Plata pike cichlids ("The Crenicichla lepidota Species Group") was the modern benchmark for sorting this difficult, look-alike cluster, and much aquarium material historically traded as "Crenicichla lepidota" actually belongs to neighbouring species in the same complex. A 2023 integrative phylogeny by Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández broke the old catch-all Crenicichla into several genera and subgenera; under that scheme lepidota falls in the subgenus Lacustria (with the southern-Brazilian lacustris radiation), and Eschmeyer's Catalog now lists the valid name as Saxatilia lepidota. That proposal is still settling in and is not yet adopted by the hobby or the trade, so this atlas keeps the long-established Crenicichla heading while flagging the pending reclassification.

Morphology

This is a classic pike cichlid in shape: a slender, cylindrical, slightly compressed body, a long head with a large terminal mouth full of fine recurved teeth, and the dorsal and anal fins set far back toward a rounded tail — the whole silhouette of an ambush predator that hangs motionless and then lunges. Maximum size is moderate for the genus; FishBase gives about 8 in total length, and most wild and aquarium adults fall in the 6–8 in range, females typically a little smaller than males. Ground colour is a variable olive-grey to brassy brown, paler below, often broken by faint dark vertical bars and a peppering of small pale spots — the specific name lepidota, from the Greek for "scaly," refers to this conspicuously scaled, speckled appearance. Two markings define the fish and give it its trade name: a round black ocellus rimmed in pale gold or cream low on the base of the caudal fin, and a second dark blotch high on the shoulder behind the gill cover. The caudal eyespot functions as classic deflection mimicry — a false eye that draws a strike away from the real head. Breeding females are unmistakable, developing a swollen, deep cherry-red to magenta belly and a flush of iridescent spangling on the flanks and unpaired fins; males grow larger, with a longer head and more produced soft dorsal and anal fins. Juveniles wear a bolder dark eye-stripe and lateral band that fades with age.

Habitat

Crenicichla lepidota is one of the most widely distributed pike cichlids, ranging across the Paraguay River drainage in Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, the lower Paraná below the Guaíra falls in Paraguay and Argentina, the middle and lower Uruguay River in Brazil and Uruguay, the coastal rivers of Rio Grande do Sul, and — disjunctly — the Guaporé drainage of the upper Madeira–Amazon basin in Brazil and Bolivia, where its type locality lies. This puts it largely in subtropical rather than tropical waters: FishBase classes it as a subtropical, potamodromous, benthopelagic species with a preferred temperature band of roughly 73–82 °F and field water that is hard and near-neutral to slightly alkaline (pH from about 7.0 upward, hardness around 12 °dH and above). It favours slow to moderate stretches of rivers, streams, floodplain lagoons, oxbows and marginal pools, keeping close to cover — submerged roots, fallen branches, undercut banks and leaf litter — from which it ambushes prey. A 2024 AMAZONAS field account from the region describes juvenile two-spot pikes slipping in and out of decaying leaf-litter piles in a marginal forest pool, using their oversized eyes to hunt anything small enough to swallow among the submerged root tangles. As a fish of shallow, structure-rich margins and floodplain habitats, it occupies the upper few metres of the water column; the genus is not a deep-water group.

Feeding

Ecologically the two-spot pike is a carnivore that behaves as an opportunistic generalist within that guild. FishBase places its trophic level around 3.6, consistent with a small predator that takes fish, aquatic insects and their larvae, crustaceans and other invertebrates, plus the occasional terrestrial item that falls in. Like all pike cichlids it is a lurking ambush hunter rather than an open-water chaser: it holds still against cover, oriented toward likely prey, and closes the distance in a final explosive lunge, the large mouth and recurved teeth seizing and holding slippery prey. Field observers describe juveniles working leaf litter and root mats for anything they can fit in their mouths, which underlines the species' flexibility — it is a true predator at heart but not a strict piscivore wedded to fish alone, and smaller individuals lean heavily on insect larvae and micro-crustaceans. In its communities it functions as a mid-level mesopredator of the vegetated margins and floodplain shallows, regulating populations of small fishes and invertebrates while itself falling prey to larger fish, birds and the seasonal pressures of the flood pulse.

Mating

Pike cichlids are biparental and strongly territorial around breeding, and Crenicichla lepidota fits that mould while carrying the genus's reputation for volatile pair dynamics. Outside reproduction the fish can be kept loosely, but ripening reorganises behaviour: a conditioned female develops the diagnostic cherry-red belly and begins to court, typically with a head-down, body-shaking display in which the swollen belly is swung first to one side and then the other — a courtship dance that hobbyists have likened to that of the West African kribensis. Pair formation is the hard part. Pike cichlids are notoriously choosy and intolerant of an ill-matched partner, and an unwilling fish may be harassed or killed; experienced keepers of the lepidota and saxatilis complexes report that a compatible bond sometimes forms only when a third "target" individual is present for the pair to vent aggression on, diffusing hostility long enough for the bond to cement. Once a genuine pair is established and a spawning site chosen, the two defend a shared territory and become, by the standards of the genus, devoted parents — but the road to that point is the single greatest challenge in breeding the fish.

Breeding

Crenicichla lepidota is a biparental cave spawner. In the aquarium, where most documented spawnings come from, the female selects a sheltered cavity — a classic choice being a large upturned flowerpot with the drainage hole enlarged, or the recess in a tangle of bogwood — and excavates it by carrying out mouthful after mouthful of substrate until she reaches a clean hard surface. The adhesive eggs are laid on the cavity wall and ceiling; in one detailed early account roughly 200 fry resulted, a figure consistent with the genus's moderate clutches (congeners commonly lay on the order of 100–300 eggs). The female remains in the cave tending and fanning the eggs, emerging only briefly to feed, while the male guards the entrance and the surrounding territory with his colours intensified. The eggs hatch and the wrigglers are kept in the cave; once free-swimming, the fry follow the parents about in a tight cloud and dive back to the shelter at any alarm signalled by a flick of the parents' fins. Care is genuinely shared and prolonged — the female actively gathers straying fry back into her mouth and returns them to the nest, and the young have been seen "glancing" off the parents' flanks in the manner of discus fry. First foods are newly hatched brine shrimp and finely chopped or sifted live foods; a large water change and conditioning on rich live and frozen fare are the usual spawning triggers.

In the aquarium

Among pike cichlids, the two-spot is one of the more manageable and forgiving choices, and it has been kept and bred in the hobby for decades — but it is still a predatory cichlid with attitude, not a community fish. A single adult or a bonded pair wants a tank of at least about 47 in / 4 ft (roughly 55–65 US gal), longer is better, with a footprint that gives the fish room to hold a territory and lets a harassed mate or tankmate escape sightlines. Aquascape for ambush cover: driftwood, roots, rockwork and dense planting around the margins, plus at least one large cave or upturned flowerpot with an enlarged opening if breeding is the goal. A sand or fine-gravel bed suits the species' habit of excavating spawning sites. Because its native waters are subtropical and hard, this is a pike that does not need soft, acidic blackwater: it does well across roughly 72–82 °F with pH near neutral to slightly alkaline (about 7.0–7.8) and moderate to fairly hard water, which makes it far easier to house than the soft-water Amazonian species. Filtration should be generous and water changes regular, though strong current is unnecessary and unwelcome.

Feeding is straightforward — the fish takes earthworms, prawn, mussel, bloodworm and other meaty live and frozen foods readily, and many specimens learn to accept good-quality sinking pellets — but feeder fish are unnecessary and best avoided on disease grounds. The real husbandry challenge is temperament. Toward other species the two-spot is a predator first: anything small enough to be swallowed will be, and slim or long-finned tankmates are at risk, so companions should be robust, similarly sized fish that occupy different water layers (larger characins, headstanders, peaceful medium cichlids, armoured catfish). The sharpest aggression, though, is intraspecific and reaches its peak between a forming or breeding pair, where an unmatched fish can be killed; a large tank, plenty of broken sightlines, and the willingness to separate fish that won't settle are essential. Keepers who lose these fish almost always do so to that pair aggression, or to housing them with prey-sized neighbours — not to water chemistry, which this hardy, adaptable pike shrugs off.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla lepidota as Least Concern (assessed 11 November 2020 by Frederico, Lima and Reis; published 2023), reflecting its very large range across the Paraguay, Paraná, Uruguay, coastal Rio Grande do Sul and Guaporé drainages and the absence of any evidence of broad decline. It carries no CITES listing and is not a conservation priority in itself. The species is collected for the ornamental trade and is locally common, and its tolerance of a wide range of conditions buffers it against many pressures that threaten narrow-range endemics. The caveat is the state of the basins it occupies: the Paraná–Paraguay–La Plata and southern-Brazilian coastal systems are among the most heavily dammed, channelised, pollution-burdened and agriculturally impacted river networks in South America, and recent literature has flagged a sharp disconnect between the global Least Concern listings of many widespread Neotropical fishes and the documented degradation and local losses occurring within their ranges. For Crenicichla lepidota none of this currently rises to a population-level threat, but it is the backdrop against which a "safe" widespread species should be read.
