Geophagus camopiensis, the Oyapock eartheater, is a sand-sifting cichlid restricted to the Oyapock and Approuague river basins that straddle the border between eastern French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá. Described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1903 and named for the Camopi, a tributary of the Oyapock, it is a member of the closely-knit Geophagus surinamensis species group — a tangle of look-alike eartheaters whose individual identities were only sorted out late in the twentieth century. Like its relatives it winnows mouthfuls of sand for food and, after spawning on a hard surface, scoops the hatched larvae into its mouth to brood them — a biparental, larvophilous mouthbrooder of warm, rocky-to-sandy Guianan rivers.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus camopiensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1903, in the Bulletin du Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, on material from the Camopi River in the Oyapock basin of French Guiana. The original type series is held in Paris: a lectotype (MNHN 1901-456), selected by Gosse in 1976, with paralectotypes in the Paris museum and one specimen passed to the Natural History Museum in London. The Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid as originally combined, and successive authorities — Gosse (1976), Keith et al. (2000), Kullander in the 2003 CLOFFSCA checklist, López-Fernández & Taphorn (2004), Staeck & Schindler (2006) and others — have all upheld it. The species sits within Geophagus proper as restricted by Sven Kullander's 1986 revision, which confined the genus to eartheaters with paired caudal extensions of the swimbladder, and is placed by FishBase in the subfamily Geophaginae (Cichlinae in the Catalog of Fishes).

Its real taxonomic difficulty is not its validity but its identification. Geophagus camopiensis belongs to the so-called Geophagus surinamensis group, an assemblage of around thirteen described and several undescribed species that share a deep head and body and a dark blotch on each flank, and which differ from one another in fine meristic and pattern details. Within that group it is diagnosed by the absence of a dark preopercular spot, the absence of vertical flank bars, a relatively large dark midlateral blotch, light blotches (rather than horizontal bands) in the caudal fin, only 30–31 scales in the E1 row, and usually seven anal-fin rays. Those last two traits it shares only with Geophagus parnaibae of the Rio Parnaíba, which Staeck and Schindler (2006) suggested may be its closest relative; the two are separated by the size of the flank spot, caudal patterning and dorsal-fin counts. Because most surinamensis-group eartheaters are sold in the trade simply as 'Geophagus surinamensis' and their juveniles are nearly indistinguishable, much older aquarium and exporter literature on this fish is unreliable — Brazilian Amapá imports of a closely similar form (the 'Araguari') have reached the trade mislabelled as Geophagus proximus, and are handled conservatively as Geophagus cf. camopiensis pending confirmation.

Morphology

The Oyapock eartheater is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid of the classic Geophagus mould, though Thomas Weidner's monograph on the genus singles it out as slimmer and more elongate than most congeners, with an upper head profile that rises appreciably more gently than in other members of the genus and a comparatively low dorsal fin. The pectoral fins are notably long, almost equalling the head in length and reaching back to the anal-fin insertion. Reported maximum size varies with source: FishBase gives 7 in standard length from one reference and cites 10 in SL from another, while Weidner reports the largest specimen on record (Gosse, 1975) at 6 in SL, implying a total length near 8 in; hobby sources and importers likewise typically quote a maximum of about 7–8 in total length, so a mature adult of roughly 8 in is a reasonable expectation. The body is a warm tan to olive overlaid with longitudinal rows of iridescent blue-green dots rather than a diffuse spangle, with the unpaired fins carrying the same dots arranged as stripes, most clearly on the anal fin. The single most consistent marking is a large, dark blotch centred on each flank, relatively large by the standards of the surinamensis group: it sits in the middle of the flank, reaches only about half a scale-width above the upper lateral line, but extends down as far as the lower lateral line. In some populations the blotch becomes notably rectangular. There is no dark bar through the cheek or behind the eye, and the flanks lack vertical barring — features that help separate it from other group members. The caudal fin is patterned with light blotches rather than continuous horizontal stripes. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle, and by Weidner's account it is reliably visible only at spawning time, when the male's genital papilla is more pointed than the female's blunter, comparatively larger papilla; no consistent secondary sexual characteristics have been identified outside of that, and sexing by size or finnage alone is unreliable. Mature males do, on average, grow a little larger and carry longer, more drawn-out fin extensions than females, and dominant males frequently develop a fleshy nuchal hump on the forehead. Notably, some males that do not develop the hump instead grow long trailing filaments on the caudal, dorsal and ventral fins. Young fish cannot be sexed reliably by eye, and a spawning female is most easily told by her protruding ovipositor.

Habitat

Geophagus camopiensis is endemic to a small corner of the eastern Guianas: the Oyapock (Oiapoque) river basin, which forms much of the border between Amapá state in Brazil and eastern French Guiana, and the adjacent Approuague system wholly within French Guiana. Weidner also lists a locality in the Rio Pantanari of Amapá state, beyond the core Oyapock–Approuague range. These drainages run roughly parallel and have been shown to be zoogeographically distinct from the other rivers of French Guiana, so a high proportion of their fishes — this eartheater among them — are local specialities. French Guiana is more than ninety percent rainforest, with year-round warmth and two distinct wet seasons (December–February and April–June) during which river level, flow and turbidity can change dramatically, even day to day. The species occupies a range of in-river settings depending on the season. FishBase reports it typically in the rocky zones of main river channels at low water, and often in the quieter parts of cascades over sandy-rocky bottom, a pattern borne out by field collections on the Approuague: the German aquarist and researcher Ernst-Otto von Drachenfels found it mainly over soft bottoms near the rapids at Saut Mapaou, most specimens caught close to the boat rather than in the fast water itself, and in a warm, shallow, current-sheltered bay behind large rocks at Saut Maripa, where the water was only waist-deep, faintly brown and lay over sand. Returning to the Sauts Mapaou stretch the following year, collectors took the species both from the rapids proper and from the calmer water at their margins: a sandy bottom littered with large stones near the rapids, sandy-to-muddy banks with numerous branches dipping into the water elsewhere, murky water with visibility of at most 12 in, and a temperature of 86 °F. Most fish were netted in the morning close to the bank, near a small tributary mouth. In this stretch it shares its habitat with Guianacara geayi — usually caught in the same cast-net hauls and generally outnumbering the eartheater — along with loricariid catfishes and headstanders (family Anostomidae). Beyond these rocky stretches it almost certainly also uses the gently shelving marginal zones of sand, fine gravel and mud that are typical Geophagus terrain, where leaf litter accumulates and stains the water tea-brown. It is a benthopelagic fish of shallow, fast-changing forest rivers rather than a deep-water specialist; the rapids-and-pool habitat it favours, and the specific field measurements above, confirm it as a shallow-water species.

Feeding

Like all true Geophagus the Oyapock eartheater is a benthophage — a sand-sifter. It takes mouthfuls of substrate, sorts the edible fraction inside the mouth and pharynx, and expels the cleaned sand and silt back out through the gill openings and mouth, the winnowing action that earns the genus its 'eartheater' name. FishBase places it low on the food web, with an estimated trophic level of about 2.3. The stomach contents of wild fish are dominated by small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, plant material such as seeds, organic detritus and the inevitable sediment swallowed in the process. The mouth and gut are built for fine fare: even as adults these cichlids struggle to take large prey items, and they continue to browse the bottom steadily even after learning to rise into the water column when food is dropped in. In the river community it functions as a continual processor of the soft-sediment and leaf-litter layer, turning over sand in search of the invertebrates and organic matter that settle there.

Mating

Outside of breeding Geophagus camopiensis is a gregarious, loosely social fish that lives in aggregations, with juveniles in particular showing strong shoaling instincts; within a group a clear dominance hierarchy forms. It is, however, not the most placid member of its genus, and reproduction reorganises a group into pairs holding territory. Sexing is difficult and pairs form by mutual choice out of a group rather than by an aquarist's pairing of selected fish, so a settled, socially stable shoal is the precondition for spawning. Courtship is comparatively low-key — fin-flaring, circling, mutual gaping and head-jerking displays — after which a forming pair selects and cleans a spawning site and begins to defend it against intruders. As is usual in substrate-brooding eartheaters, the roles divide once a pair commits: the female stays close over the chosen surface while the male patrols and defends the wider territory around it. Reaching this point takes patience, as the fish are typically not sexually mature until around a year old.

Breeding

Geophagus camopiensis is generally treated as a biparental, larvophilous mouthbrooder — it spawns in the open like a substrate-brooder but transfers the young to the mouth after they hatch, a reproductive style shared across much of the surinamensis group. That classification, however, rests on an incomplete picture: Thomas Weidner records the species spawning in the aquarium several times, with eggs laid on a smooth horizontal stone and fanned by the presumed female, and mouthbrooding confirmed after about two days — but the fish abandoned and ate the brood after only three days, too early in the cycle to establish with certainty whether they were carrying eggs (ovophilous) or newly hatched larvae (larvophilous). On the strength of comparisons with other geophagine mouthbrooders, larvophilous brooding is considered the more likely mode, though Weidner is explicit that further observation is needed. There is no strong external trigger beyond good condition: a rich diet and a stable, well-maintained environment with generous water changes are the main requirements reported by breeders. The pair cleans a hard surface — usually a flat stone or a piece of driftwood, occasionally the bare tank bottom — and the female lays one or more rows of eggs that the male then fertilises, the sequence repeated over several hours. The female tends and guards the eggs while the male holds the surrounding territory. Hatching and the transfer of the brood to the mouth are recorded within about two days of spawning, usually by the female though sometimes by both parents from the outset. Brood care after that is variable and depends heavily on the individual male: in some pairs the female holds the entire brood alone (sometimes after being driven off by the male), in others both parents hold fry simultaneously or exchange the whole brood back and forth, typically over a sheltered depression in the substrate. The fry become free-swimming at about eight to eleven days and are then released to feed for lengthening periods, bolting back into the parents' mouths when danger threatens — a rapid flick of the adults' ventral fins appears to act as the recall signal. As the fry grow they return only at night, and the defended area expands with them. Free-swimming young are easy to raise on powdered dry foods, Artemia nauplii and microworm. Importers report breeding more readily encouraged by warmer water, on the order of 86–90 °F, against a maintenance temperature in the upper twenties.

In the aquarium

Geophagus camopiensis is poorly known in the hobby — it surfaces only occasionally through specialist breeders and importers, sometimes as wild Amapá stock from the Rio Araguari labelled 'Geophagus cf. camopiensis Araguari' — but it is a colourful and reportedly hardy, adaptable eartheater for a keeper prepared to meet its needs. Because it is gregarious and forms hierarchies, it should be kept as a group: five to eight fish is a sensible minimum, since in smaller numbers a dominant individual tends to bully the weaker ones, or the group fails to settle and behaves nervously. That group size, plus an adult length around 8 in, means a large tank — a footprint of roughly 150 x 17.5 in (about 80 US gal) or more for a long-term group, larger still if breeding is the aim. It is described as not the most peaceful Geophagus, though it will not predate anything bigger than a few millimetres, so it suits a community of robust but non-aggressive tankmates that share its warm, soft-to-moderate water; avoid aggressive substrate-dwellers and species needing hard water. Some keepers house eartheaters with Potamotrygon stingrays, which often works but has occasionally ended with the cichlids vanishing overnight.

The non-negotiable item of décor is a deep bed of soft sand. These fish feed by taking sand into the mouth and sorting it, so a fine substrate is essential to both their feeding behaviour and their long-term health; gravel or pebbles inhibit normal sifting and can damage the gill filaments or be swallowed with risk of internal injury. Driftwood, scattered roots and dim lighting suit them, and one or two flat, water-worn stones give a potential spawning surface. Leaf litter, though natural, tends to be a nuisance in the tank because the constant sifting throws partly-decayed material into suspension that clouds the water and clogs filters. Water quality matters greatly: these cichlids are sensitive to deteriorating conditions and to swings in chemistry, and should never go into a biologically immature tank, or they are prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion and stunted growth. Little husbandry data has been published for this species specifically, but Weidner draws a direct comparison to the related fast-water eartheater Geophagus argyrostictus: powerful filtration is required not merely to clear the water mechanically but to keep it genuinely moving, and to hold ammonia, nitrite and, so far as possible, nitrate at minimal levels, alongside consistently high temperatures (82–86 °F) and a varied diet. The standard regime is heavy filtration (canister and/or sump) combined with large weekly water changes of fifty to seventy percent, while keeping actual flow gentle — these are fish of warm, slow-to-moderate forest rivers, so position returns to circulate without a strong current, and tune mechanical filtration to trap the fine sand the fish stir up.

Target warm water: roughly 77–91 °F (importers keep them in the upper twenties and push toward 86–90 °F to encourage spawning), pH about 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (around 36–215 ppm / 2–12 dGH). Feeding is straightforward but should respect the small mouth: offer several small portions a day rather than one big meal, mixing fine-grade prepared foods with small live or frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, Artemia and mosquito larvae, plus some vegetable content such as Spirulina. The most common ways keepers lose these fish are coarse substrate, inadequate maintenance in too-small a tank, and keeping too few of a shoaling species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus camopiensis as Least Concern (assessed 18 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). It carries no CITES listing, and the population trend is recorded as unknown. Despite a genuinely small native range — confined to the Oyapock and Approuague basins on the French Guiana–Brazil border — the species is not currently considered threatened, in part because much of its range lies within sparsely-populated, heavily-forested terrain that remains comparatively intact: over ninety percent of French Guiana is still rainforest. It is harvested in a small way for the ornamental trade, and FishBase also lists a minor commercial fishery, but neither is flagged as a population-level concern. The broader pressures on its habitat are those facing the eastern Guianas generally — gold mining and the mercury contamination and siltation that accompany it, plus localised deforestation — rather than any documented decline of this particular cichlid. As a narrow-range endemic of two distinctive river systems, it is nonetheless the kind of species whose status warrants periodic re-checking rather than complacency.
