Apistogramma gossei is a small, secretive dwarf cichlid from the coastal rivers of the eastern Guiana Shield, where it hunts through leaf litter in soft, tea-stained forest streams. Sven Kullander described it in 1982, and it breeds in the classic dwarf-cichlid way: the female alone tends the eggs and fry inside a sheltered cavity. The trade files it under "Amazonian" dwarf cichlids, but that label is wrong — Apistogramma gossei belongs to the Oyapock and Approuague drainages and their neighbors, independent rivers that never join the Amazon. It reaches the hobby only as an occasional wild import, so most keepers meet it through specialist channels rather than a shop tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma gossei in 1982, in Cybium (3e série, vol. 6, no. 4, pp. 65–72), under the title "Description of a new species of Apistogramma Regan from the Oyapock and Approuague River systems." The holotype sits at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris (MNHN 1981-231, figured as Fig. 1 of the description), with paratypes spread among the BMNH (London), IRSNB (Brussels), MZUSP (São Paulo) and NRM (Stockholm). One quirk of that type material deserves flagging: the holotype's locality data reads "Martinique," a long-recognized curatorial error, when the real type locality is the Oyapock River system in Amapá, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes carries the caveat verbatim — a reminder that an old museum label is data to check, not gospel.

The genus name Apistogramma joins the Greek apisto (uncertain) and gramma (line or graphic mark), a nod to the variable lateral lines that confounded early workers. The epithet honors Jean-Pierre Gosse (1924–2001), the Belgian ichthyologist and Curator of Vertebrates at the Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique, who worked on Neotropical cichlids. Hobby checklists maintained by Mike Wise and colleagues at apistogramma.com place the fish in the regani species-group, and in the formal classification Apistogramma sits in the tribe Geophagini of the subfamily Cichlinae (FishBase still lists it under the older name Geophaginae). There are no junior synonyms; the name has stood unchanged since 1982, and the Catalog of Fishes marks its status simply as valid.

Morphology

This is a genuinely small fish. FishBase gives a maximum standard length of about 1.5 in for males and unsexed specimens and roughly 2 in for females, with an often-cited maximum total length of 3 in; hobby references such as Fishipedia put the working adult size at 2–2.5 in. One figure in the FishBase biology note — "23.5 in vs. 15.5 in" for the sexes — is plainly a units slip and should be read as 2.5 in vs. 1.5 in; the IUCN account inherited the same typo. The body is the usual oval, laterally compressed Apistogramma form.

Like most of its genus, Apistogramma gossei is sexually dimorphic. Males grow larger, carry longer and more filamentous fins, and intensify in color when in breeding condition, while females stay smaller and plainer outside of spawning. The species is also known for real variation in color pattern across its range; the IUCN account treats these as morphotypes rather than distinct taxa. The base scheme is a muted brown-to-grey body marked by a dark lateral band and the row of dark blotches typical of the regani group, set off by colored fins in displaying males. It is a subtle fish rather than a flashy one, and it shows best against dark substrate and tannin-stained water — exactly the conditions of its home streams.

Habitat

Apistogramma gossei is an endemic of the eastern Guiana Shield. Its core range is the Oyapock and Approuague river drainages, straddling Brazil's Amapá state and French Guiana. The sources draw the edges differently: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes extends the distribution to include Guyana, the IUCN assessment maps it more narrowly to just Brazil (Amapá) and French Guiana, and French Guianese survey and eDNA work (Cilleros et al. 2019; Brosse and colleagues) records it more widely across the territory's watersheds, including the Cayenne river. The IUCN gives an estimated extent of occurrence of about 131,0 mi². The point worth stating plainly: despite being lumped with "Amazonian" dwarf cichlids in the trade, these are independent coastal rivers draining north and east off the Guiana Shield to the Atlantic — the FEOW Guianas ecoregion — not tributaries of the Amazon.

The habitat is classic small-stream forest blackwater. These fish live near the bottom of shaded creeks over sand or mud buried under deep leaf litter and submerged wood, where decomposing botanicals leach tannins that stain the water and pull down the pH. FishBase classifies the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, in warm tropical water of about 73–84 °F (73–84 °F), and the IUCN codes its habitat as permanent rivers, streams and creeks. No depth band has been published — this is a shallow stream fish, not a deep-water one. Reported and recommended water chemistry is soft and acidic: pH roughly 4–6 and very low hardness (GH around 2–8). The leaf-litter layer is not incidental decor but the fish's whole world — cover, foraging ground, and spawning real estate in one.

Feeding

Apistogramma gossei is an omnivore that forages over and within the leaf litter and soft sediment of its home streams; FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.5, in line with a diet weighted toward small invertebrates. In the wild that means the micro-fauna of the litter layer — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and other benthic invertebrates — gleaned and picked from the substrate in the manner typical of small Apistogramma. The species was scored as omnivorous in the French Guianese stream-fish assemblage study of Brosse et al. (2011), one of the few quantitative ecological datasets to feature it.

Within the wider community, a dwarf cichlid this size is both a small predator of invertebrates and potential prey for larger fishes and birds. It shares its blackwater creeks with characins (tetras), pencilfishes, small catfishes such as Corydoras and loricariids, killifishes, and other cichlids — the low-conductivity, leaf-litter assemblage typical of the Guiana Shield. Its low fishing-vulnerability and medium-resilience scores on FishBase reflect a short generation time and the fast turnover of a small, quick-maturing stream fish. In aquaria it readily takes live or frozen small foods — microworm, baby brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworm — alongside prepared diets, all of which echo the invertebrate-heavy wild menu.

Mating

In behavior, Apistogramma gossei follows the regani-group template. It is territorial and will defend a chosen patch, showing aggression toward conspecifics and similar bottom-dwellers while largely ignoring fish that keep to other parts of the water column. In nature it lives in pairs or small groups rather than large shoals, with a male holding a territory that contains one or more females. Pairing and spawning turn on the discovery and defense of a suitable cavity: the male establishes and patrols the wider territory while a female, coming into condition, claims a sheltered nook within it. As elsewhere in the genus, the female's switch into active site defense and a more intense, contrasting color is the readable sign that courtship has tipped into spawning. Soft, acidic, warm water — the chemistry of the natural blackwater habitat — is what brings a pair into condition; hard, alkaline water usually suppresses breeding altogether.

Breeding

Reproduction is the species' best-documented trait. Apistogramma gossei is a cave (cavity) spawner with female-dominated brood care. The female deposits her eggs on the ceiling of a sheltered cavity — among leaf litter, under wood, in a crevice, or in a tank a flowerpot or coconut shell — the male fertilizes them, and she then does essentially all of the parenting: guarding and fanning the clutch, and later shepherding the free-swimming fry. The male's role is mostly confined to defending the wider territory against intruders. This female-centered, larvophilic substrate-brooding strategy holds across the genus and is captured in the FishBase reproduction note ("eggs are attached to the ceiling of caves, female cares for eggs and larvae") and echoed by the IUCN and Fishipedia accounts.

Clutches in small Apistogramma are correspondingly modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs rather than the hundreds laid by larger Neotropical cichlids — and no precise fecundity figure has been published for Apistogramma gossei specifically. Once the eggs hatch, the female moves the wrigglers between pits and tended sites until they are free-swimming, then leads the small school through the leaf litter, herding stragglers and driving off anything that comes near. Spawning is triggered by the soft, acidic, warm conditions of the natural habitat; in aquaria, recreating that blackwater chemistry is the practical key to getting a pair to breed at all.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma gossei is genuinely uncommon in the hobby. It turns up now and then through specialist importers and the auction tables of dwarf-cichlid societies, and dedicated keepers do spawn it, but it is not a chain-store fish — bringing one to a club meeting will draw a crowd. That rarity does not make it hard to keep well. It is not a beginner's fish, but an experienced blackwater keeper will find its needs straightforward once the chemistry is right.

Water: this is the non-negotiable. In the wild it lives where the pH sits around 4–6, hardness is virtually nil, and the water is stained dark by decomposing leaves. In the tank, aim for that envelope — pH 5.0–6.5, general hardness below 8 °dH, and temperature between 23 and 84 °F (73–84 °F). Reverse-osmosis or naturally soft water conditioned with dried alder cones, Indian almond leaves, or a modest peat filter does the job. Calcareous substrate, crushed coral, or hard tap water topped up with minerals will block breeding and can weaken the fish over time; you cannot run this species in community conditions built for Central American or African cichlids.

Tank: a single pair or a harem is comfortable in 15–20 US gal (roughly a standard 23.5 in footprint), and a species tank or dedicated blackwater biotope is ideal. Cover the bottom with fine sand, pile on a generous layer of dried leaves (beech, oak, or Indian almond), and add a few pieces of driftwood or twisted roots. Spawning furniture matters: give the female several small caves to choose from — smooth-sided coconut half-shells, unglazed terracotta pots on their sides, or stacked slate. Dim the tank with floating plants or water sprite and run a gentle sponge or low-flow filter; strong flow and bright light both fight the natural habitat and keep the fish hiding.

Tankmates: keep a pair, or a harem of one male with two or three females — the harem is the more natural arrangement. Sex on shape and finnage rather than raw length: the male is the larger, more colorful fish with extended, more pointed dorsal and ventral fins, while females run slimmer and markedly plainer outside spawning even though they reach a similar standard length. Keep only one male unless the tank is very large, since males are aggressive toward other males and toward closely related or similarly shaped species. Good companions in a blackwater biotope are small, undemanding fishes of the upper water column that share the soft-acid requirement: pencilfish (Nannostomus species), small Guiana Shield tetras such as Hemigrammus or Hyphessobrycon, and small Corydoras, all of which work as dither fish that keep the cichlids from turning shy. Avoid anything big enough to eat fry, and avoid other cave-spawners that will fight for territory.

Common mistakes: the usual error is underestimating how completely soft, acidic water changes this fish. In hard or alkaline water Apistogramma gossei will refuse to spawn, color up poorly, and may become prone to bacterial infections — the chemistry is the foundation of the whole relationship, not an optional refinement. The second error is pairing the male with a single female in a small tank, where his courtship pressure can harass a lone female to exhaustion; two or three females spread that load and keep everyone in better shape. When she does spawn, the female seals herself into her chosen cave, and your job is simply to leave her alone and make small, chemistry-matched water changes. Fry raise easily on microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp and are not especially fragile once free-swimming, as long as the water stays inside the soft-acid envelope.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma gossei as Least Concern (assessment by R.G. Frederico, assessed 29 October 2020 and published in the 2025 update; reviewer T.J. Lyons; e.T162752087A162752097). The reasoning is simple: despite limited data on the species itself, it has a fairly wide range — an estimated extent of occurrence of about 131,0 mi² across the Oyapock and Approuague drainages — that is judged unlikely to face severe range-wide threats. The population trend is listed as unknown, and the assessment notes the fish "appears to not be common or abundant." It carries no CITES listing. It is harvested as an ornamental for the national and international aquarium trade, and the assessors flag that harvest as a research need rather than a documented threat.

The wider regional picture tempers any complacency. Its home streams sit within the Guiana Shield, where the sharpest documented pressure on small forest-stream fishes is gold mining. Brosse et al. (2011) — the very study that included Apistogramma gossei — showed that small-scale gold mining erodes the structure of fish assemblages in these neotropical creeks through sedimentation and turbidity, and more recent French Guianese work keeps singling out mining-driven habitat degradation as the territory's central conservation concern. A leaf-litter specialist of clear-to-blackwater creeks is exactly the kind of fish exposed to that siltation. So the honest reading is the one the data support: the species itself is Least Concern and not known to be declining, but the blackwater streams it depends on are locally strained by mining and deforestation, and its narrow ecological requirements mean it would feel those changes keenly where they occur. As with most Neotropical cichlids catalogued in Kullander's Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003), the realistic risks here are habitat change and collection pressure, not collapse.
