Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis microchrysomelas was formally described by the Belgian ichthyologist Jos Snoeks in 1994, in a 221-page revision of Lake Kivu's haplochromines published in the Annales du Musée royal de l'Afrique Centrale (Série Sciences Zoologiques, vol. 270). The holotype (MRAC 88.16.P.250) was collected at Gisenyi, on the Rwandan shore near the FAO fishery station, at roughly 1°42′S, 29°16′E. Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, and GBIF all treat the name as valid with no junior synonyms — a clean record, which is welcome in a genus as taxonomically tangled as Haplochromis.
The genus name combines the Greek haploos ("single") with chromis, an old name for a perch-like fish. The species epithet reads as a compact description of the fish itself — micro- (small) joined to chrysos (gold) and melas (black) — pointing to the small gold-and-dark markings that distinguish it. That places it among the lake's "endemic flock": Snoeks recognised about fifteen Haplochromis species in Kivu, every one of them found nowhere else, and considered them part of the wider Victoria–Edward–Kivu superflock of haplochromines rather than relatives of the Tanganyikan cichlids next door. In Rwanda the lake's small haplochromines are caught and eaten together under vernacular names; this species has been recorded locally as "Ifuro," and English-language aquarium sources have lately tagged it the "orange-tail Kivu haplo."
Morphology
This is a small fish. The largest measured specimen recorded by FishBase is about 3.5 in standard length — that is body length excluding the tail fin — so a mature adult is a hand-sized cichlid at most, and usually less. Snoeks distinguished it from Kivu's other haplochromines on fine details of body proportions, dentition, and squamation rather than on any single dramatic feature, which is typical of a young species flock where the members have not yet diverged far.
Reliable colour notes for the living fish are thin in the literature, and we won't invent them. The epithet and the hobby trade name both point to a fish with gold-to-orange tones — including in the tail — set against darker markings, and the few aquarium photographs that exist, such as a courting pair kept by importer Oliver Lucanus, show a modestly coloured haplochromine with the warm caudal flush that earned it its trade name. As in most haplochromines, expect males to be the more colourful and slightly larger sex and females to be plainer; precise dimorphism for this species has not been formally documented, so treat strong claims about breeding dress with caution.
Habitat
Haplochromis microchrysomelas is endemic to Lake Kivu, meaning it occurs naturally nowhere else on Earth. The IUCN lists it from both shores — Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo — and characterises it simply as a "lake shore" species; FishBase classes it as benthopelagic, living in and just above the bottom in shallow water rather than out in open pelagic habitat.
That narrow shoreline existence is dictated by the lake itself. Kivu is meromictic: its water column is permanently layered, and only the upper 197–213 ft or so — the oxygenated mixolimnion — supports fish. Below that lies a vast, dense, oxygen-free deep that reaches the lake's maximum depth of about 1604 ft and never mixes with the surface. As a regional review of rift-lake fish communities put it, in the deep lakes of the western rift the oxycline, not the lakebed, sets the lower limit of fish life. So although Kivu is enormous and deep, its haplochromines — this one included — are pressed into a thin, sunlit band around the margins, sharing littoral rock, sand, and weed with the lake's handful of other native and introduced fishes. The lake's surface water is hard and strongly alkaline, with a pH commonly in the high 8s to low 9s and warm, stable temperatures around 73–75 °F year-round.
Feeding
Direct diet studies of Haplochromis microchrysomelas are lacking, so its trophic role has to be read partly from its relatives and partly from model estimates. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3 — squarely that of a small carnivore or omnivore taking invertebrates rather than a strict herbivore or apex predator. In practice, Kivu's littoral haplochromines glean small prey from the substrate and biofilm of the shallows: aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and other benthic invertebrates, supplemented by algae and detritus.
What makes the Kivu flock interesting ecologically is how finely these similar-looking fishes partition the limited habitat. A 2021 morphometric study of two Kivu haplochromines found measurable differences in jaw mechanics and skull shape between littoral and pelagic populations — fish from the open water showed greater jaw protrusion and higher inferred bite force — echoing the kind of trophic fine-tuning that has driven explosive cichlid radiations in Lakes Victoria and Malawi. That work did not single out Haplochromis microchrysomelas, so we can't assign it a specific feeding specialisation; but it shows the evolutionary pressures shaping the assemblage this species belongs to.
Mating
No published study describes the courtship of Haplochromis microchrysomelas specifically, so the honest position is that its mating behaviour is inferred rather than observed. It belongs to the Haplochromini, the tribe that includes the Lake Victoria and Lake Malawi haplochromines, and essentially all of these follow the same template: males are typically territorial and display to females with heightened colour, and pairing is brief rather than forming a lasting bond. In this species the warm gold-to-orange caudal flush that gives the fish its trade name is almost certainly part of that display repertoire, shown most intensely by ripe males courting females, though formal documentation of the breeding dress is still lacking.
Hobbyist accounts of the closely related Kivu haplochromines that entered the aquarium trade alongside it describe them as active, moderately aggressive shoaling cichlids in which males stake out small territories and court passing females — consistent with mouthbrooding haplochromines generally. These are community-level observations from a small number of keepers, not formal data, so anyone keeping the fish should report what they actually see rather than assume.
Breeding
Like essentially all members of the Haplochromini, Haplochromis microchrysomelas is a maternal mouthbrooder: after a brief spawning the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods the developing young there for several weeks, releasing free-swimming fry and often sheltering them in her mouth again when threatened. The male contributes no parental care beyond defending a spawning territory. No published account documents clutch size for this species specifically; small haplochromines of this size typically carry broods on the order of a few dozen eggs, in keeping with the genus, but that figure is an inference rather than a measured value for Haplochromis microchrysomelas.
Hobbyist reports of the Kivu haplochromines that reached the trade alongside it indicate they will spawn in captivity under good conditions, consistent with mouthbrooding haplochromines generally. These are scattered keeper observations, not formal data, and none is a substitute for a proper breeding account of this particular species, which remains to be written.
In the aquarium
For most of its known history Haplochromis microchrysomelas was a museum fish, not an aquarium one, and it is essentially absent from the ornamental trade today. Kivu's haplochromines were effectively unknown in the hobby until the late 2010s, partly because the region's instability made collecting difficult; the first commercial imports of Lake Kivu haplochromines reached hobbyists around 2018, following collecting trips organised by importer Oliver Lucanus with the New England Cichlid Association in 2017. Even now the species appears only in the hands of a few specialist keepers and conservation-minded breeders rather than in shops, so practical husbandry information is genuinely scarce and you should be wary of any "care sheet" that speaks with confidence about a fish almost no one has kept.
What can be said responsibly: this is a small (roughly 3-inch) rift-lake cichlid from hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated water, so it wants the same broad regime as other East African haplochromines — hard water with a basic pH, stable warm temperatures, strong filtration and oxygenation, and a setup with open swimming room and some structure. Like other mouthbrooding haplochromines it is best kept in groups with a male-skewed-to-female ratio managed to spread aggression, and it should not be mixed with timid community fish. Because wild stock is rare and the species is of real conservation interest, anyone who obtains it is better off treating it as a preservation project — keeping a proper group and breeding it — than as a casual community addition.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Haplochromis microchrysomelas as Least Concern on 31 January 2006 (assessor: J. Snoeks; published 2006), with an unknown population trend and an explicit "needs updating" annotation. The justification was straightforward: a species with a relatively widespread distribution within the lake and no major, lake-wide threats identified at the time. The threats the assessment did flag are the everyday pressures of an inhabited African Great Lake — subsistence fishing and sedimentation from agricultural soil erosion along the shore. There is no specific aquarium-trade pressure on this fish; collection for the hobby is recent, tiny, and arguably a net positive insofar as it has seeded captive populations of an otherwise little-known endemic.
That "Least Concern" label should be read in the context of the lake it depends on, because Kivu is no ordinary lake. It is meromictic, and its deep water holds an immense dissolved reservoir of carbon dioxide and methane (Schmid et al., 2008) — enough that the lake carries a recognised, if debated, limnic-eruption hazard and now supports a growing methane-extraction industry on its surface. Crucially, its endemic haplochromine flock — about fifteen species, all confined to the lake — lives entirely within the thin oxygenated surface layer above that gas-charged deep, with no refuge below. The lake's ecology was also reshaped in 1959 by the deliberate introduction of the Tanganyika sardine Limnothrissa miodon, which established a major pelagic fishery that had no native counterpart. So the accurate summary is this: the species itself is not currently considered threatened, but it is a narrow-range endemic squeezed into a sliver of habitable water in a lake under rising shoreline population pressure, intensifying fisheries, sedimentation, and unusual industrial development — and its two-decade-old assessment is overdue for a fresh look.
