Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Victoria — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Haplochromis acidens is a small, slender cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria and one of the great paradoxes of the lake's celebrated haplochromine species flock. Its name means "sharp-toothed" — Greenwood gave it for the long, needle-like unicuspid teeth and elongated jaws that, on any anatomical reckoning, mark it as a predator. Yet when researchers opened the guts of wild fish they found not other fishes but mashed-up aquatic plant tissue. Together with a single relative and an introduced tilapia, it is one of the very few fishes in all of Lake Victoria known to make a living eating macrophytes, a piscivore's mouth turned to a vegetarian's table.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis acidens was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1967, in Part VI of his monumental multi-part revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species, published in the Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology series (15(2): 73–77). Greenwood, working at the Natural History Museum in London, spent much of his career untangling this single lake's bewildering radiation of cichlids, and acidens is one of dozens of species he named in the process. The genus name Haplochromis is a holding pen as much as a true genus: the Lake Victoria, Kyoga and Edward/George radiation comprises several hundred closely related species, and modern workers have split many into segregate genera such as Astatotilapia, Yssichromis, Mbipia, Lipochromis and Paralabidochromis. Haplochromis acidens has not been formally reassigned, so it retains the catch-all Haplochromis heading used here, but it should be understood as a member of the Lake Victoria superflock rather than of a tightly defined genus in the modern sense. Witte and van Oijen, in their 1990 trophic-group treatment of the flock, place it firmly among the lake's tiny guild of "plant-eaters," while flagging that its morphology is that of a fish-eater — a mismatch that has made it a small but recurring talking point in the literature on the radiation.

Morphology

This is a modest-sized haplochromine: the maximum recorded length is about 5 in standard length, and adults in the plant-eating guild generally run from roughly 3–5 in SL. The body is comparatively slender and not deep — body depth well under the high values seen in the lake's mollusc-crushing species. What sets acidens apart, and what gives it its name, is the front of the head. The jaws are elongated, with the lower jaw exceeding 45 percent of head length — proportions Witte and van Oijen describe as those of a piscivore. The outer teeth of the oral jaws are long, slender and unicuspid (single-pointed), Greenwood's acies, "sharp point," made flesh. By contrast its sole guild-mate, Haplochromis phytophagus, has the short bicuspid teeth with broad flanges typical of a true vegetarian. Like nearly all members of the flock the species would have shown the haplochromine staples: anal-fin egg-spots (ocelli) in the males, and, in breeding condition, vivid male nuptial colour against the duller, more cryptic females. Greenwood reported the intestine at roughly 1.5 to 2.0 times standard length — long for a predator but short for a committed herbivore, another sign of a fish caught anatomically between two ways of life. Detailed live coloration was never well documented; the species is known mainly from preserved museum material and Greenwood's illustrations.

Habitat

Haplochromis acidens is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow equatorial lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Within the lake it has a restricted, northern distribution: the records compiled by Witte and van Oijen place it only in the northern part of the lake, in Ugandan and Kenyan waters. Its habitat is specific and tied directly to its diet — the shallow, sheltered littoral zone where rooted aquatic plants (phanerogams, the flowering macrophytes) grow. FishBase records it from sheltered, shallow areas near submerged plant stands, over mud and hard substrate, at depths down to about 10 ft. This is warm, shallow, vegetated shoreline water rather than open lake or deep trawl ground. Lake Victoria's surface waters are circum-neutral to alkaline and moderately mineralized — broadly pH in the high 7s to around 9, temperatures of roughly 73–81 °F in the surface layer, and modest hardness — and acidens, as a shallow-littoral fish, lived in the warm upper band of that envelope. The vegetated marginal habitat it depends on is, importantly, one of the lake zones thought to have buffered some of its inhabitants from the worst of the later ecological collapse.

Feeding

Here is the species' defining oddity. By its mouth — long jaws, slender needle-like unicuspid teeth — Haplochromis acidens looks unmistakably like a predator, and indeed Witte and van Oijen note that morphologically and partly ecologically it carries piscivore features. But the gut contents tell a different story. The major content of examined guts was macerated phanerogam (flowering-plant) tissue, together with varying amounts of epiphytic diatoms and algae growing on the plants; some specimens also held a grey-green flocculent mass thought to be bottom debris and blue-green algae. Animal matter does turn up — insect remains, insect eggs, fragments of mayflies (Ephemeroptera), and in one single specimen some fish remains — but plant material dominates. On this basis Witte and van Oijen classify it, with Haplochromis phytophagus, as one of the lake's two native "plant-eaters," and note that together with the introduced Tilapia zillii these are the only fishes in Lake Victoria known to feed on macrophytes. Quite how a fish with a piscivore's dentition harvests and processes soft plant tissue is not fully resolved; the sharp teeth may rasp or shred vegetation and crop the rich epiphyte film, while the moderately long intestine handles the plant matter. It occupies a narrow, almost unique trophic niche in a flock otherwise famous for its diversity of specialists.

Mating

No direct observations of courtship or social behaviour in Haplochromis acidens have been published — reproduction in this species is recorded simply as unknown. Its mating biology can therefore only be inferred from the well-studied pattern shared across the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. In these fishes the sexes are strongly dimorphic in the breeding season: males develop bright nuptial coloration and carry yellow or orange egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin, and they establish and defend small courting territories or display sites within the shallows. A male displays to passing females with quivering, lateral presentation and fin-spreading, his egg-spots prominent. Females, drably coloured and inconspicuous, choose among displaying males. As in the flock generally, there is no lasting pair bond — the male's investment ends at spawning, and the female alone takes the eggs and tends the brood. For acidens specifically, all of this is plausible reconstruction rather than recorded fact.

Breeding

Reproduction in Haplochromis acidens has never been documented, and FishBase records the species only as a mouthbrooder. That single word, however, sits on very solid ground: the entire Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation consists of maternal (female) mouthbrooders, and there is no reason to think acidens differs. In the genus-typical pattern the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning — often snapping at the male's anal-fin egg-spots in the process, which helps ensure fertilization — and carries the developing clutch in her buccal cavity for roughly two to three weeks, not feeding while she broods. Clutch sizes in small haplochromines of this body size are modest, typically on the order of a few dozen comparatively large, yolky eggs (genus-typical figure; not measured for this species), the trade-off of mouthbrooding being few, well-provisioned young rather than many small ones. After release the fry may briefly shelter back in the mother's mouth when threatened before becoming fully independent. Spawning triggers, fecundity, egg size and fry development for acidens itself are all simply unrecorded.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis acidens is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has no history in the ornamental trade, no established common name, and is known almost entirely from museum specimens and the scientific literature; it is a narrow-range, plant-eating Lake Victoria endemic of interest to ichthyologists rather than hobbyists. There is no body of keeping experience to draw on, and given its Data Deficient conservation status and uncertain present existence, it is not a fish anyone is realistically going to acquire. The most that can be said in husbandry terms is generic to the flock and the lake. Were it ever maintained, it would need hard, alkaline water (pH well above neutral, into the 8s) at warm temperatures around 75–81 °F — conditions utterly unlike the soft, acidic water suited to most South American or West African dwarf cichlids — together with a generous, vegetated shallow-water setup reflecting its macrophyte-grazing habit, and the usual haplochromine social management (keeping males from harassing females and each other in too small a tank). Several other Lake Victoria haplochromines are kept and bred by specialist aquarists and conservation-minded breeders precisely because the wild flock is so imperilled; acidens is not among them, and any account of keeping it would be invention rather than report.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis acidens as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 31 March 2010 by Witte, F. and de Zeeuw, M.P. and published in 2010, with population trend unknown. Data Deficient means there is simply not enough information on its distribution and population status to judge its risk of extinction — an honest verdict for a fish known from scattered northern-lake records and never re-studied in detail. That uncertainty sits against one of the most dramatic ecological catastrophes in the history of freshwater fishes. From the 1980s the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock — once perhaps 500 or more species, the largest known vertebrate species flock — collapsed under the combined pressure of the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a voracious predator, and rapid eutrophication that turned the once-clear water turbid and oxygen-poor. Many haplochromine species were driven to extinction or to the brink, and a substantial fraction of the flock is now classed by the IUCN in threatened or extinct categories. Witte and van Oijen suggested that fishes of the shallow, emergent-vegetation littoral — the very habitat acidens occupies — were probably less hammered by the Nile perch than those of most other zones, which offers a slim hope. But for a macrophyte specialist tied to vegetated shorelines that are themselves under pressure from shoreline development and water-quality decline, that hope is exactly that. Whether Haplochromis acidens still persists, and in what numbers, is unknown.
