Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Kivu — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis nigroides is a small mouthbrooding cichlid found only in Lake Kivu, the high, gas-charged rift lake straddling the Rwanda–DR Congo border. It is one of roughly fifteen haplochromines endemic to a lake otherwise famous for being half-poisoned in its depths, and it earns its name — "black-like" — from the sooty males that hold territory over the bottom. Most interesting of all, it is a dedicated mud-eater: its gut is typically packed with grey-black silt, detritus, and the tiny organisms living in it, a feeding niche that keeps it out of competition with its more colourful neighbours.

Name history

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1928, not as a full species but as a variety — Astatotilapia astatodon var. nigroïdes — based on a single specimen from Lake Kivu (the holotype, MNHN 1927-3025, still sits in Paris). It was later raised to species rank and is today recognised as Haplochromis nigroides (Pellegrin, 1928), a status confirmed by van Oijen and colleagues in the 1991 CLOFFA checklist and by Jos Snoeks's 1994 revision of the Kivu flock. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid under that name and authority; note that one widely cited diet paper prints the author date as "1939," which is an error for 1928.

The name is straightforward Latin: nigroides means "black-like," a reference to the dark dress of territorial males rather than to the whole population. The genus Haplochromis is a famously broad, much-debated bucket — "haploos" (single) plus "chromis" (an old name for a perch-like fish) — and the Kivu species belong to the great Lake Victoria–Edward–Kivu "superflock," a lineage of haplochromines whose closest relatives lie in other lakes of the same group rather than next door in Kivu itself (Snoeks et al. 1997). In the aquarium trade the fish has occasionally circulated under the placeholder tag "Haplochromis sp. rainbow," a hobbyist name, not a scientific one.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of about 3 in (3 in) standard length, and the field sample in Ulyel et al.'s feeding study ran 2–3 in SL, so a wild adult is a palm-sized fish, not a showpiece. The body is the typical compressed, deep-bodied haplochromine shape.

Colour is where the name comes from: territorial, dominant males take on a uniformly dark, sooty brown-to-black cast, which is what Pellegrin's "nigroides" captures. Females and non-territorial males are the plainer silvery-brown you would expect of a Victoria-region haplochromine. As in essentially all members of this group, sexual dichromatism is strong — males signal with colour and pattern, females stay cryptic — and the sexes are best told apart by the male's breeding dress and the egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin that the genus is known for. Reliable, fine-grained morphometric separation from its Kivu congeners (there are several superficially similar species in the lake) rests on counts and proportions in the technical literature rather than on field marks.

Habitat

Haplochromis nigroides is a lacustrine endemic: it lives in Lake Kivu and nowhere else (FishBase; Snoeks et al. 1997). Kivu is one of the smaller African Great Lakes but also one of the deepest, about 2,230 mi² of surface sitting at roughly 1,1509 ft altitude between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a maximum depth near 1591 ft.

The fish itself keeps to the lake's habitable upper layer. In the long-running Belgian–Rwandan surveys it was taken in bottom gill-nets in the shallow bays at Gisenyi and Kibuye, across depths from the surface down to around 230 ft (Ulyel et al. 1991). Recorded surface water is warm and strikingly alkaline — FishBase cites about 73–77°F (73–77 °F) and a pH of 9.1–9.5 — so this is a fish adapted to hard, basic, tropical water, not the soft conditions some hobbyists associate with "African cichlids." The depth limit is not just a preference: Kivu is meromictic, meaning its deep water never mixes to the top, and below a few tens of metres the lake becomes anoxic and saturated with dissolved gas, leaving only a thin oxygenated surface stratum for fish to occupy.

Feeding

If Haplochromis nigroides has a claim to fame, it is its stomach. In the most detailed dietary work on the Kivu flock, Ulyel and colleagues (1991) classed it as the assemblage's "mud-feeder": the gut was filled almost entirely with microbenthic material — grey-green mud, silt, and detritus — together with the small organisms bound up in it, including diatoms, ostracods, copepods, cladocerans, rotifers, and assorted insect remains. Detritus and benthic algae made up the bulk by volume, which fits its low calculated trophic level of about 2.7 (FishBase) — this is a primary consumer working the lake bottom, not a predator.

That study also showed a clear daily rhythm. Unlike the lake's insect-eaters, which feed in two bouts, Haplochromis nigroides has a single feeding peak in the afternoon (roughly 3–6 p.m.), with stomachs nearly empty overnight; the Kivu haplochromines are essentially asleep on or near the bottom after dark. The broader picture is a textbook case of resource partitioning: by specialising on mud and detritus and cropping it at a particular time of day, Haplochromis nigroides sidesteps direct competition with sympatric species that take chironomid larvae, plankton, or epilithic algae — one of the mechanisms that lets a dozen-plus haplochromines coexist in such a young, species-poor lake.

Mating

Direct field observations of nigroides spawning are thin, but the ecology hints at the social structure. Males are territorial and signal with their dark breeding colour — the sooty cast that gives the species its name — and the feeding study noted that adult males in Kivu generally do not migrate far, holding station near the bottom. That is behaviour consistent with the lek-like, male-territory mating systems typical of these cichlids, in which males defend a patch of bottom and court passing females with colour, fin display, and the egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin that the genus is known for. As in essentially all members of the Victoria–Edward–Kivu superflock, the male's contribution ends at courtship and fertilisation; there is no pair bond and no shared parental duty. Hobbyist keepers of the few lines that reached aquariums report ordinary haplochromine courtship, but those accounts are anecdotal and not a substitute for systematic study.

Breeding

Like the rest of its lineage, Haplochromis nigroides is a maternal mouthbrooder (FishBase): after spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries the developing young there, releasing free-swimming fry only once they have absorbed the yolk. There is no substrate nest and no biparental care — the female alone broods and guards the clutch, and for a time after release she may take alarmed fry back into her mouth. Clutch sizes are not documented for nigroides specifically; for small Victoria–Kivu superflock haplochromines of this size, broods on the order of a few dozen eggs are genus-typical. This maternal-mouthbrooding mode is the standard, well-documented reproductive strategy across the superflock, and there is no published evidence that nigroides departs from it.

In the aquarium

This is not a fish you will find at a shop. Haplochromis nigroides entered the hobby only through deliberate collecting trips to Lake Kivu — the aquarist and exporter Oliver Lucanus brought material back around 2014 and again in 2017, and a small number of F1 fry were distributed among specialist keepers in the United States and Europe, sometimes under the trade tag "sp. rainbow." By keepers' own accounts the species has remained scarce and several lines have since dwindled, so treat any care notes as drawn from a handful of hobbyists rather than from a settled body of experience.

What the biology tells you is concrete. Match the water: hard, alkaline conditions around pH 8–9 and warm temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s°F (roughly 73–77 °F) mirror the lake. Because it is a small, bottom-oriented detritivore, it does not need a huge tank by African-cichlid standards, but as a mouthbrooding haplochromine it will show the usual male territoriality, so a group with several females per male and a sand bottom with structure is the sensible setup. The honest cautions are two: first, this is a conservation-grade rarity, not a casual purchase, and anyone keeping it should aim to breed and distribute it rather than let a line die out; second, never mix it with other Haplochromis where hybridisation is a risk — within this superflock the species cross readily, and a few careless spawnings can erase exactly what makes a wild-collected line worth keeping.

Conservation

On the IUCN Red List, Haplochromis nigroides is assessed as Least Concern (assessment dated 31 January 2006, by Snoeks), and there is no targeted commercial or aquarium-trade pressure on it — it is not a food fish and reaches the hobby only in tiny, deliberately collected numbers. Taken on its own terms, the species is not flagged as threatened. But "Least Concern" here describes a fish whose entire world is a single, strained lake, and the honest framing is to say exactly that.

Lake Kivu is an unusual and demanding place. It is meromictic, and its deep water holds an enormous dissolved reservoir of carbon dioxide and methane (early measurements cited on the order of 1,400 ml/L of CO₂ and 370 ml/L of CH₄ at depth), which gives the lake a recognised limnic-eruption hazard and now supports a growing methane-extraction industry feeding power plants such as KivuWatt. Because the deep layer is anoxic and gas-charged, every fish in the lake — Haplochromis nigroides included — is confined to a thin oxygenated surface stratum, which leaves the endemic flock with very little habitat to spare. On top of that geology sits intense human pressure: the basin holds around two million people at some of the highest population densities in the region, and the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education lists rapidly rising fishing pressure, deforestation, agricultural runoff and eutrophication, and climate-driven warming and reduced mixing as the lake's main threats. The pelagic zone was also reshaped by people: the Tanganyika sardine Limnothrissa miodon, introduced in 1959, became the lake's dominant fishery and now drives most of the catch (Snoeks et al. 1997).

None of these stressors targets Haplochromis nigroides specifically, and its current status reflects that. But for a mud-feeding endemic with no refuge outside this one gas-charged, fast-developing lake, the margin is narrow, and the lake-level pressures — not any trade in the fish itself — are what to watch.
