Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis scheffersi was described in 1987 by Jos Snoeks, Luc De Vos and Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde, in the Revue de Zoologie Africaine, from material collected off Gisenyi at the northern tip of Lake Kivu, Rwanda. The holotype, an adult deposited at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, carries the register MRAC 85-13-P-133, with a series of paratypes from the same museum lot. The Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid and unchanged, and the nomenclatural act is registered in ZooBank.
The species epithet honors W. J. Scheffers, who directed the FAO Fisheries Development project on Lake Kivu and, by the authors' own account, smoothed their fieldwork there. Among Rwandan fishers the lake's small haplochromines are known collectively by vernacular names; the Cichlid Room Companion records "Ifuro" for this one. The genus name Haplochromis is a historically overloaded label — a catch-all for hundreds of East African cichlids — and most of Lake Kivu's endemics still sit within it provisionally. Snoeks' 1994 taxonomic revision of the lake's haplochromines remains the anchor reference, treating scheffersi as part of the wider Victoria–Edward–Kivu species assemblage rather than a Tanganyikan lineage. Where modern molecular work eventually splits that super-flock into genera, the name on this fish may yet change.
Morphology
This is a modestly sized fish: the original material tops out at about 3.5 in standard length, and reaching that figure makes it a small cichlid by aquarium standards, despite occasional hobbyist reports of larger individuals that the published measurements do not support. In body plan it is a textbook haplochromine — a laterally compressed, fusiform cichlid with nothing exotic in its profile.
The color is where the fish earns a second look. Field observers and aquarists describe breeding males as predominantly dark — close to black — overlaid by a set of about seven faint vertical bars along the flanks, a bright red tail, and red wash in the fins, with blue iridescence catching the light on the head and body. Females and non-displaying fish are plainer and more silvery-grey, as is typical for the maternal mouthbrooders of this group. Because Lake Kivu's endemic haplochromines are closely related and overlap in shape and size, separating scheffersi from its lake-mates on a single live specimen is a job for fin-ray and tooth counts rather than a quick glance — the kind of careful meristic work Snoeks' revision was built on.
Habitat
Haplochromis scheffersi is endemic to Lake Kivu and is found nowhere else; museum and survey records cluster along the Rwandan shore, with a smaller share from the Congolese side, mirroring where the lake has actually been sampled rather than any hard biological boundary. It is a benthopelagic fish, comfortable both near the bottom and out in open water. A Lake Kivu survey assessing the lake's diversity recorded scheffersi across a wide depth band — roughly 10–115 ft — making it one of the lake's more vertically flexible endemics rather than a narrow shallow- or deep-water specialist.
That depth tolerance only matters within strict limits, because Lake Kivu is meromictic: only its uppermost layer is habitable. Researchers call this oxygenated surface stratum the "biozone," and it extends from the surface to about 197 ft; everything below is permanently anoxic and laced with dissolved gas. The water scheffersi lives in is hard and decidedly alkaline — FishBase cites a pH of 9.1 to 9.5 and a temperature around 73–77 °F (73–77 °F) — figures that reflect the lake's saline, volcanically influenced chemistry and that any aquarist trying to mimic it should take seriously.
Feeding
Detailed gut-content studies of this particular species are thin in the public literature, so its diet is best read from its body and its company. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, the value expected of a small generalist carnivore rather than a strict plant-grazer or a fish-eating predator. In structure it is a middling, unspecialized haplochromine — the morphological starting point from which the lake's flock has diverged.
That divergence is the interesting part. Lake Kivu's endemics, like those of the related Edward and Victoria systems, have partitioned a small lake's limited niches: some hug rocky and sandy littoral margins as benthic feeders, others have pushed out into open water as zooplankton-pickers, and a few have taken up insect-eating or piscivory. Within that spread scheffersi reads as a flexible, mid-water and near-bottom feeder taking small invertebrates and zooplankton — consistent with its broad depth range and its place in a flock that diversified by trophic ecology rather than by drifting far apart in shape.
Mating
Like essentially all the haplochromines of the Victoria–Edward–Kivu lineage, Haplochromis scheffersi reproduces by the courtship-and-display routine that underwrites the whole East African cichlid radiation. Males in condition develop their dark, red-and-blue display dress, set up and defend a patch of substrate, and court actively; females and non-displaying fish stay plainer and silvery. The strategy frees the parents from defending a fixed nest site over the long term and lets the fish breed in open or featureless habitat.
Direct field observations of scheffersi courtship and territoriality are scarce in the published record, and we are careful not to invent them. What can be said with confidence is general to the group: males contribute nothing to parental care once spawning is done, so the courtship arena is the whole of their reproductive investment, and sparring between displaying males is to be expected. Aquarium reports from the handful of keepers who have worked with the species — males displaying and sparring, females responding — are consistent with ordinary haplochromine courtship but remain anecdotal and few, and should be treated as such rather than as a settled account of how the fish behaves in the wild.
Breeding
Haplochromis scheffersi is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared across the Victoria–Edward–Kivu haplochromine lineage. After spawning, the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and broods the developing young there, releasing free-swimming fry only once they have absorbed the yolk; the male takes no part in care. Clutches in this group are modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs, scaling with the size of the female — and the published record gives no species-specific count for scheffersi, so genus-typical figures are the honest reference.
Wild breeding has not been documented in detail, and we do not invent it. The few aquarium accounts that exist describe ordinary haplochromine brooding — a holding female carrying for roughly two to three weeks before release — but trace back to a very small founder stock and should be read as anecdotal rather than as an established life-history account. What is clear is the shape of the strategy: a small number of well-provisioned, mouth-protected young rather than a large unguarded spawn, the trade-off that has made these mouthbrooders so successful across the East African lakes.
In the aquarium
For most of its known history this fish was simply unavailable to hobbyists, and it has never been a commercial aquarium species. That changed only around 2017, when collector Oliver Lucanus brought back groups of several Lake Kivu endemics — scheffersi among them — that had been, in his words, entirely unknown to the hobby. Anything you read about keeping it traces back to that small founder stock and the keepers who have worked to preserve it, so the care record is shallow and should be read as such; it is not a fish you will find in the trade.
What that record suggests is sensible and unsurprising. Keepers report success in a dedicated species tank over coarse sand with plenty of rock, which lets a brooding female find cover and gives males room to set up. The non-negotiable detail is water chemistry: this is a hard, high-pH lake fish, and trying to keep it soft and acidic is asking for trouble — alkaline water in the pH 8–9 range, similar to a Rift Lake setup, is the honest starting point. It is a small cichlid, but a cichlid all the same, so expect intraspecific aggression around spawning and stock it in numbers that spread that out. The realistic framing is that this is a rare conservation-minded keeper's fish, not a community-tank ornament — its value is in maintaining a hard-to-get endemic, and that is the spirit in which it has circulated.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Haplochromis scheffersi as Least Concern, in an evaluation by J. Snoeks dated 31 January 2006, with the population trend recorded as unknown. There is no commercial fishery aimed at it and only a trickle of specialist aquarium collection, so on its own terms the species is not flagged as threatened. That status, however, sits inside a lake under real and unusual strain, and the two should be read together.
Lake Kivu is a meromictic rift lake holding an enormous reservoir of dissolved carbon dioxide and methane in its deep waters — on the order of hundreds of cubic kilometres of CO₂ and tens of cubic kilometres of methane — sealed beneath a stable salinity gradient. That gas carries a recognised limnic-eruption hazard, and it now also underpins a growing industry: Rwanda extracts the methane to generate electricity, with extraction designed to re-inject degassed water deep enough to protect the surface ecosystem. All of the lake's life, scheffersi included, is confined to the thin oxygenated biozone in the top ~197 ft. That habitable layer is itself squeezed during the long stratified season, when the band between roughly 30 and 197 ft can lose oxygen, narrowing where the fish can live and feed. The pelagic zone was also reworked by people: the Tanganyika sardine Limnothrissa miodon, introduced in 1959, established a major fishery and changed the open-water food web the endemics share. Add lakeshore population pressure and the risk that mismanaged degassing or nutrient release could trigger eutrophication, and the picture is of a fish that is fine for now but lives in a lake whose stability cannot be taken for granted — which is exactly why Rwanda established a Lake Kivu Monitoring Program in 2008 to watch the system. In short: the species is Least Concern, the lake is not carefree, and that distinction is the honest one to draw.
