Taxonomy & naming
Hemeraia hemera was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1990, in a short paper in the first volume of Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. The type series came from a small headwater stream tributary to the Rio Cinta Larga, part of the upper Rio Aripuanã drainage, reached along the BR-174 road out of Juína in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Kullander designated a holotype (MZUSP 40292, an 3.5 in SL specimen in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo) with a handful of paratypes in the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM 26094 and a cleared-and-stained specimen, NRM 37082). It was the first pike cichlid recorded from a tributary of the Aripuanã. In 1991 Alex Ploeg described Crenicichla guentheri from the same Aripuanã system; Kullander's 2003 checklist of South and Central American freshwater fishes treated that name as a junior synonym of hemera, and material from the rio Aripuanã has since confirmed the synonymy. Kullander allied hemera with the large-scaled saxatilis group of small pike cichlids but noted it is not a typical member of any recognised group. The genus Crenicichla long served as a catch-all for the Neotropical pike cichlids, and in a 2023 integrative phylogenetic revision Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández dismantled it, restricting Crenicichla to a few species around the type species Crenicichla macrophthalma and erecting several new genera for the rest. Hemeraia hemera became the type species of one of them, Hemeraia, which contains only two fish — hemera and its close relative Hemeraia chicha (Varella & Kullander, 2012) of the middle Xingu. The valid name is therefore now Hemeraia hemera (Kullander, 1990), though the original Crenicichla combination remains in wide use in the literature and the trade.
Morphology
Hemera is a small pike cichlid with the elongate, cylindrical body typical of the group, though it is comparatively stout rather than eel-like. The whole type series ran from about 2–4 in standard length, and because only immature females and unsexed juveniles were collected, the true maximum size is unknown — FishBase lists roughly 4 in SL on the basis of those types, so this is a fish of around 4–4.5 in at most. Counts from the original description are 19–21 dorsal spines with 13–14 soft rays, three anal spines with 9–12 soft rays, and 35 vertebrae. Kullander gave it a distinctive and unique colour pattern: a dark band running from the tip of the lower jaw back along the side and onto the caudal fin, a broken dark stripe along the belly, several dark vertical bars, a gold ring around the eye, a maroon suborbital streak, a small red spot above and behind the eye, scattered small red spots on the body and on the dorsal and caudal fins, red dorsal-fin lappets, a caudal blotch usually edged by a narrow pale ring, and a yellow stripe along the leading edge of the pelvic fins. The species is most readily separated from other pike cichlids by the row of dark blotches forming a more or less continuous band along the abdominal flank, by having infraorbital bones 3 and 4 fused (co-ossified) rather than separate, and by a smooth-margined preopercle where most pike cichlids have a serrated one. As the types were immature, sexual dimorphism in hemera has not been documented, but pike cichlids as a group are dimorphic: males grow larger and longer-finned, while ripe females are rounder-bellied and typically carry contrasting markings (often a pale-ringed dark spot or red flush) in the dorsal fin.
Habitat
Hemera is known with certainty only from its type locality, a clearwater stream in the upper Aripuanã drainage of the Rio Madeira basin, in the southern Amazon near Juína, Mato Grosso. The Aripuanã rises on the Brazilian Shield and flows north to join the Madeira, and the species falls within the Madeira Brazilian Shield freshwater ecoregion. Kullander described the collecting site as a small, clear stream roughly 7 ft wide and about 3 ft deep, draining a swampy area. That places hemera among the shallow, clearwater forest streams characteristic of the shield tributaries rather than in a large river or in blackwater or whitewater of the sort that dominates the central Amazon. No in-situ chemistry was published with the description, but shield headwater streams of this region are generally warm, soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral; the species can reasonably be expected in the warm tropical band typical of the basin (about 75–84 °F). Because the entire record rests on one stream, almost nothing is known of how widely it ranges, what microhabitats it prefers within the stream, or how its numbers fluctuate.
Feeding
Like all pike cichlids, hemera is a predator built around a long body, a large mouth and a sit-and-wait or stalking attack on prey it can swallow whole. Direct dietary evidence is limited to a single stomach examined by Kullander, which contained aquatic insect larvae — including chironomid (midge) larvae — and an ant. That points to a small carnivore taking bottom-living and drifting invertebrates and, presumably as it grows, small fishes and other animal prey, in keeping with the trophic level of about 3.2 that FishBase estimates from its size and relatives. In its clearwater stream it functions as one of the resident ambush predators of the benthic and near-bottom zone, hunting among leaf litter, submerged wood and the stream margins.
Mating
No courtship or pair formation has been observed in Hemeraia hemera, in the wild or in captivity — the species reached science from a handful of immature and juvenile specimens and has scarcely been kept since. What can be said is drawn from the wider pike-cichlid radiation, which is consistently monogamous: a male and female form a pair, jointly hold and defend a territory around a chosen spawning site, and the partners signal readiness through colour change (females especially) and substrate cleaning. The one behavioural observation specific to hemera is the trait that gave it its name. Kullander recorded that most individuals could be approached very closely and fled only reluctantly when collected — a docility unusual among pike cichlids, which are typically wary, and one that need not say anything about how the fish behaves toward its own kind on a breeding territory.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in Hemeraia hemera; the species has essentially never been bred, and the original material was immature, so wild spawning, clutch size and fry development are all unrecorded. Inference must come from the genus and the wider pike-cichlid lineage, which are remarkably uniform in their reproduction. Pike cichlids are biparental substrate and cave spawners: a pair cleans a sheltered surface — the underside of a rock or wood, a crevice, or a cave — and the female lays adhesive eggs there, with small-bodied species of this size typically producing on the order of one to a few hundred eggs (genus-typical figure, not measured in hemera). The female tends and fans the eggs while the male guards the wider territory, and both parents then escort the free-swimming fry, which are moved between pits and shelters and defended vigorously until they disperse. Until hemera is bred in an aquarium or observed on the spawn in the wild, these statements remain genus-level expectations rather than facts about this particular fish.
In the aquarium
Hemeraia hemera is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a small-range Brazilian Shield endemic that has rarely if ever been exported alive, and the trade has continued to call the few related fish by their old Crenicichla names; the two Hemeraia species are not known to have appeared in the hobby in any quantity. There is therefore no established body of keeping or breeding experience to report for this species, and any husbandry guidance can only be extrapolated from comparable small pike cichlids of the saxatilis assemblage.
If a fish of this size and origin were kept, the sensible approach is the one used for other 4–4.5 in clearwater pike cichlids. A footprint of roughly 100 × 15.5 in (about 30 US gal) for a pair is a realistic minimum, with the length mattering more than the volume because these are bottom-oriented, territorial fish. The tank should be heavily structured with rock, driftwood and cave-like retreats so a pair can claim and defend a site and a subordinate fish can break the line of sight; a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate and subdued lighting suit a stream fish. Water should mirror the warm, soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral clearwater streams of the upper Madeira — temperatures around the mid-to-upper 20s °C and a pH a little below to around neutral — with clean, well-filtered, moderately moving water and regular water changes, as pike cichlids resent accumulated waste.
Tankmates should be chosen on the universal pike-cichlid principle that anything small enough to be eaten will be eaten, and that intraspecific and congeneric aggression peaks at breeding time. Robust mid- and upper-water dither fish too large to swallow, kept in a tank long enough to absorb territorial disputes, are the usual solution; a bonded pair held alone in a well-aquascaped tank is the most reliable arrangement. The honest summary is that this is a rarely-seen fish with no documented hobby track record — the notes above are reasoned extrapolation, not tested practice.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses the species (as Hemeraia hemera) as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 7 November 2018 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022. The type locality near Juína, in southern Mato Grosso, sits in a frontier region of the Brazilian Amazon that has been progressively altered by logging and the expansion of agriculture, and habitat degradation from these activities is identified as the main pressure on the fish. The assessors nonetheless concluded that these were not significant enough to place the species at risk of extinction, and the population trend is recorded as unknown. There is no CITES or CMS listing. The chief caution is simply how little is known: hemera is documented from a single small stream, and a narrow-range, poorly-sampled endemic in a rapidly developing part of the southern Amazon warrants more attention than a Least Concern label might suggest, particularly as deforestation, road-building and shifting land use continue to reshape the headwater streams of the upper Madeira.
