Taxonomy & naming
The lowland cichlid was described in 1899 by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and John Otterbein Snyder, who spent part of the winter of 1898–99 collecting in northeastern Mexico and published their findings in the Bulletin of the U.S. Fish Commission. They named it Neetroplus carpintis, placing it — somewhat surprisingly — in Neetroplus rather than Heros on the basis of its dentition; this made it the only purported member of that genus north of the volcanic barrier known as Punta del Morro, which long isolated the fishes of northern and southern Mexico. The holotype (CAS-SU 6162) and a series of paratypes came from the Laguna del Carpintero, a coastal lagoon at Tampico that gives the fish its name. Curiously, the original description also records Herichthys cyanoguttatus from the very same water, a near-identical species whose resemblance an ichthyologist of Jordan's stature could hardly have missed. The species has shuffled through several genera over the following century — Cichlasoma carpinte/carpintis and back to Neetroplus — before Sven Kullander's 2003 checklist of Neotropical cichlids confirmed and standardized Herichthys carpintis, the combination in current use (Catalog of Fishes; valid as Herichthys carpintis). Two names fall into synonymy: Heros teporatus Fowler, 1903 (from the Río Soto la Marina, later resurrected by some workers as a distinct species Heros teporatus) and Cichlosoma laurae Regan, 1908 (from Tampico). The species sits in the Herichthys cyanoguttatus species group within the genus, and molecular and morphological work by Pérez-Miranda and colleagues (2016, 2017) has shown both that the genus is riddled with natural hybridization and that carpintis itself is extraordinarily variable; the boundary between carpintis and cyanoguttatus, especially in the Soto la Marina, remains genuinely blurred.
The genus's own history explains carpintis's earlier wanderings between generic names. Baird and Girard's original 1854 diagnosis of Herichthys leaned on tooth structure ('teeth small, sub-conical, simple, exterior row most conspicuous'), a character Seth Eugene Meek argued in 1914 was likely ecophenotypic — shaped by diet rather than ancestry — and so of limited taxonomic weight, a debate that dogged the genus for decades. Kullander's 1983 and 1986 revisions narrowed Cichlasoma to twelve South American species and Heros to two, leaving the Central American species formerly parked in Cichlasoma without a genus; Burgess and Walls (1992) resolved this by applying the next available name, Herichthys, to that whole assemblage, restoring carpintis to the genus under which its closest relatives are now classified.
The closest known relative of H. carpintis is Herichthys tamasopoensis, an isolated species endemic to the Río Gallinas — a Pánuco tributary cut off from the rest of the drainage by the 344 ft Tamul waterfall — and distinguished from carpintis by a shallower body, a shorter snout, a longer caudal peduncle, a straight rather than concave dorsal head profile, a smaller adult size (to about 7 in TL versus carpintis's 8.5 in), and an earlier breeding season, running from mid-December to the end of May rather than carpintis's late-March-to-early-August window (Artigas Azas, The Cichlids Yearbook, Volume 3).
Morphology
Herichthys carpintis is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed, powerfully built cichlid. FishBase lists a maximum of 6.5 in standard length, but in practice wild males reach roughly 8.5 in total length and aquarium specimens commonly attain 10 in or a little more, with females staying somewhat smaller — so a working figure of about 10 in total length is realistic for kept fish. The species' signature is its coloration: a dark olive-to-grey ground overlaid with large, rounded, iridescent spots of turquoise, blue-green, and pearl that catch the light like a mantle of jewels — in some populations the blotches spread across the scale margins into a near-continuous pearly sheen, the trait behind the trade name 'pearlscale.' The spots of carpintis are notably larger and more blotch-like than the fine, dense spangling of its relative Herichthys cyanoguttatus, the most reliable field difference between the two. A dark mid-lateral blotch and a spot at the caudal base are usually present. Sexual dimorphism is moderate: males grow larger and, in breeding condition, develop a fleshy nuchal hump on the forehead; ripe females are rounder-bodied. The most striking change is dynamic rather than fixed — when spawning, both sexes adopt a vivid contrast pattern, the front half of the body turning chalk-white while the rear half and underside go velvety black, and the leading dorsal-fin spines flush pink. Because so many isolated lagoon and river populations exist, body depth, ground color, and spot size vary widely from one locality to the next, which has long complicated the fish's taxonomy.
Habitat
The lowland cichlid is endemic to the Atlantic (Gulf) slope of northeastern Mexico, where it occupies the lowland reaches of drainages from the Río Soto la Marina south to the mouth of the Río Pánuco, including the Tamesí and the maze of coastal lagoons around Tampico — Carpintero, Chairel, Escondida, Tortuga, Chila, and others — the heart of its natural range (FishBase; IUCN; Catalog of Fishes). It is a habitat generalist within these warm lowlands, recorded by Stawikowski and Werner from both fast-flowing rivers and still waters, and tolerant of the brackish conditions of the estuarine lagoons. Populations from the placid coastal lagoons tend to be deeper-bodied than the slimmer fish of clear, flowing headwaters such as the Río Verde and Río Moctezuma. In-situ water is warm and hard-alkaline: FishBase gives a pH range of 7.0–8.0 and hardness of 9–20 dH at temperatures of 73–91 °F, conditions typical of the limestone-influenced Pánuco system. As a shallow-water, near-shore fish of lagoons, river margins, and pools, it lives in the upper few metres of the water column; no deep-water occurrence is documented. Populations found high in the basin (for instance in the Río Verde and at Media Luna) are considered introductions rather than native, and there carpintis hybridizes with and threatens the endemic Herichthys labridens — a reminder that this adaptable fish can become a problem when moved beyond its home waters. An introduced population has also been reported from Singapore, though its establishment is uncertain. The species has also been photographed in the Río Axtla, a Pánuco tributary within its native range (Konings, Enjoying Cichlids).
Feeding
Herichthys carpintis is a broad opportunistic omnivore, and field workers describe it as a fish that exploits essentially every available food source in its habitat. Its diet spans aquatic insects and their larvae, small fishes and fish eggs, snails and other molluscs, plant matter, fruit, algae, and detritus (Artigas Azas, Cichlid Room Companion; aquainfo/NVC). FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, consistent with a generalist that leans neither strictly herbivore nor strictly predator. There is some evidence of an ontogenetic shift: juveniles are reported to work the substrate more, probing the bottom for insect larvae — plausibly to meet the higher protein demands of growth — while adults take a wider, more vegetable-inclined menu. Within the genus, dentition itself varies with diet across populations, with snail-eating fish carrying a different tooth set than those feeding mainly on vegetation, an example of the phenotypic plasticity that runs through Herichthys. In its lowland communities the species functions as an adaptable mid-level forager of the bottom and littoral zone.
Mating
Outside of breeding, lowland cichlids are gregarious and best kept in groups, but reproduction reorganizes the population into a colony of territories. Drawing on Juan Miguel Artigas Azas's field observations (Cichlid Room Companion), the breeding season in the wild typically runs from late March to early August. Males establish territories — almost always centred on a rock, in current-sheltered spots — and several pairs commonly nest close together in loose colonies. Breeding males temporarily develop a frontal hump and, with their brilliant iridescent spotting, advertise to females from these holdings; the largest, best-placed males win the central, most desirable sites, while smaller males (some participating from as little as 4 in) are pushed to the colony edges or marginal areas. Females are quickly drawn to the territories and show a strong preference for the largest available male — pairs in which the male is twice the female's size are not unusual. As a pair forms, both fish switch into the dramatic black-and-white spawning livery and jointly prepare a vertical rock face, working over a chosen surface and constantly skirmishing with their neighbours. Hours before spawning the genital papillae become visible. This combination of colonial territoriality and intense, size-driven mate choice underlies the species' reputation as a confident, combative cichlid that needs room to sort itself out.
Breeding
Herichthys carpintis is a biparental substrate spawner. The pair lay their eggs on a cleaned vertical or sloping rock surface — the larger the rock the better — with both parents sharing guard duty in the classic Central American division of labour: the female stays close to fan and tend the clutch while the male patrols and drives off intruders, the two periodically swapping roles (FishBase; Artigas Azas). Eggs are salmon-coloured, oval, and about 0.5 in long, and an adult pair's clutch is large — observations of wild and aquarium spawns record well over 1,000 eggs, comfortably in the genus-typical range of several hundred to a couple of thousand. The eggs are guarded for roughly two days until they hatch. During incubation the pair also excavate several pits in the substrate, perhaps 4 in across and deep, and shuttle the newly hatched larvae from pit to pit — apparently to confound nocturnal predators such as catfish (Ictalurus). The yolk sac is consumed about five days after hatching, and a day later the fry swim freely in a tight, circling school close to the mother, who steers them with body-shakes and fin movements while the male holds the wider territory. Wild fry are guarded until roughly 1 in long before dispersing into shallow, rock- and weed-sheltered margins. Predation pressure is heavy — Astyanax tetras can strip an entire clutch in seconds if the parents are distracted — so tight parental coordination is essential. In the aquarium the species spawns readily once a compatible pair is settled; warm water and a flat rock or slate are the only special requirements, and the parents are typically diligent and effective.
In the aquarium
The lowland cichlid has a long history in the hobby and is one of the more rewarding Central American cichlids to keep, but it is not a community fish and it is not for small tanks. Adults reach about 10 in and are powerful, territorial, and at times outright aggressive, so a single specimen or a breeding pair needs a footprint of at least 47 in (around 75 US gallons / ~75 US gal), and a group is far better housed in a tank of 2 metres or more. Ad Konings, in Enjoying Cichlids, illustrates a workable mixed Central American community in a 400-litre tank pairing a pair of H. carpintis with a pair each of Amphilophus longimanus and Neetroplus panamensis — a useful real-world benchmark for the volume a multi-species setup of this kind needs. The proven approach to obtaining a pair is to grow on a group of six or more juveniles in a large tank and let a pair form naturally, removing surplus fish as a hierarchy settles — pairing adults cold in a confined space invites serious, sometimes fatal, fighting.
Water chemistry is undemanding because the fish comes from hard, alkaline lowland waters: a temperature of about 72–86 °F, pH from roughly 7.0 to 8.5, and moderately hard water (around 9–20 dH) all suit it, and long-domesticated aquarium strains are notably tolerant. Some lagoon populations also handle brackish conditions, and the species has even been kept in outdoor ponds in mild European summers — but wild-collected fish vary by origin, so it pays to know where a given line comes from and set the tank up accordingly. Good filtration and regular large water changes matter: like most big Central Americans, carpintis is a messy eater that produces a heavy bioload.
Décor should be built around a sand or fine-gravel substrate with sturdy rockwork and flat stones or slate to serve as spawning sites and territory anchors; the fish will dig, so rocks must rest on the tank bottom rather than on the substrate. Plants are generally uprooted or eaten, so robust hardscape is the more reliable way to break sightlines and reduce aggression. Feeding is easy — a varied diet of quality sinking pellets, plus frozen or live foods (bloodworm, earthworm, small invertebrates) and some vegetable matter, keeps the colours strong; avoid an exclusively meaty diet given the species' omnivorous, partly vegetarian wild feeding.
Tankmates should be chosen for the fish's temperament rather than its looks. Suitable companions are similarly robust, similarly sized cichlids and tough lowland fishes that can stand their ground; small or timid species, and anything slow enough to be bullied, are poor choices, and a breeding pair will dominate a large stretch of tank. The most common keeper mistakes are an undersized tank, mixing it with peaceful community fish, and — for purists — inadvertently hybridizing it with the closely related Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) or crossing distinct locality variants, which quietly erases the wild forms that make the species so interesting. Keeping documented variants separate is the responsible course for anyone breeding wild-type fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Herichthys carpintis as Least Concern (assessed 19 September 2018 by E. Soto Galera, published 2019). The assessment notes that the species occurs along the Atlantic slope of Mexico, principally in the lowland parts of drainages from the Río Soto la Marina to the mouth of the Río Pánuco, and that its population trend is increasing despite the basin being heavily polluted in places — a sign of a tough, adaptable generalist. It carries no CITES listing and is not listed under Mexico's NOM-059 conservation norm. Habitat quality across its range is uneven, running from severely polluted reaches near Tampico's urban and industrial corridor to relatively pristine headwater springs. The broader pressures on the Pánuco–Soto la Marina system — water pollution, urbanization, water extraction, and the spread of non-native fishes — are real, but none is documented as a population-level threat to this particular cichlid. Ironically, the most notable conservation concern involving carpintis is the harm it does elsewhere: translocated populations in the upper basin hybridize with and displace the range-restricted, far more vulnerable Herichthys labridens, a cautionary example of a common species threatening a rarer relative once it is moved beyond its native lowlands.
