Taxonomy & naming
The Chairel cichlid was described by John N. Taylor and Robert Rush Miller in 1983, in their revision of the cichlids of the Río Pánuco basin, as Cichlasoma pantostictum, with type material from the Atlantic slope of northern Mexico spanning the Pánuco drainage from the Río Sabinas down to the coastal Laguna Tamiahua. It was later placed in Herichthys, and in 2015 De la Maza-Benignos and colleagues transferred it to their new genus Nosferatu in their Hydrobiologia phylogeography of the group, the genus named for the dark bar these cichlids raise in breeding colour after F. W. Murnau's silent-film vampire. As with the rest of the genus, the split is contested and FishBase and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes retain it as Herichthys pantostictus, so the two names denote the same fish. Two species described in 2013 by De la Maza-Benignos and Lozano-Vilano — Herichthys pratinus (the 'green cichlid', from the Río El Salto) and Herichthys molango (the 'Aztec cichlid', from Laguna Azteca in Hidalgo) — were subsequently synonymised with pantostictus by Pérez-Miranda and colleagues (2018, 2020) and are treated by the Catalog of Fishes as junior synonyms; the breadth of variation across the species' coastal range is part of why those populations were initially split off.
Morphology
Herichthys pantostictus is a modest-sized cichlid, reaching about 5 in in standard length, with a noticeably smaller and more terminal mouth than the molar-toothed snail-eaters of its genus. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed. Its defining feature is the one the name records: a dense scatter of small dark spots covering the head and much of the body (pantostictus, 'all-spotted'), often over a brassy-tan to grey-green ground. The lower pharyngeal teeth are more pointed and less heavily molariform than in bartoni, labridens or steindachneri, matching its softer, insect-based diet rather than a snail-crushing role. In breeding condition the fish can pale and raise the dark vertical bar or paired dark fields characteristic of the genus. Sexual dimorphism is weak — males average a little larger — and venting is the most reliable way to sex the fish. The species' tolerance of turbid and brackish water, unusual in the genus, is reflected in a generally robust, adaptable body plan rather than the specialised feeding morphology of its spring-dwelling relatives.
Habitat
The Chairel cichlid has by far the widest range of any Nosferatu species, occupying the lower Pánuco and Tamesí river drainages and the associated coastal lagoons of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, on Mexico's Atlantic slope. It occurs from the Río Sabinas in the upper part of the system down to the brackish, turbid Laguna Tamiahua on the Gulf coast, and is named for Laguna del Chairel near Tampico. Unusually among its relatives, it thrives in coastal lacustrine environments that are slightly salty and turbid, over mud or sand bottoms, as well as in clearer river reaches — FishBase records a temperature range of about 63–82 °F and a pH of 7.5 or above, with the species tolerating conditions that would exclude the spring-endemic members of the genus. This breadth of habitat, from fresh river to brackish coastal lagoon, is the key to both its wide distribution and its comparatively secure conservation status.
Feeding
Unlike the snail-crushers of the Río Verde springs, Herichthys pantostictus is primarily an insectivore. Taylor and Miller's original work and later dietary accounts describe it feeding chiefly on aquatic and terrestrial insects, with small fishes taken occasionally, and FishBase places it around trophic level 3.4. Its less molariform pharyngeal dentition fits this softer diet — it is not built to mill hard-shelled snails as its relatives are. In the turbid coastal lagoons and lower rivers it inhabits, it forages opportunistically over mud and sand for insect larvae and other invertebrates, with the dietary flexibility that lets it occupy a wider and more variable set of habitats than any other species in its genus.
Mating
The Chairel cichlid is a monogamous, pair-bonding substrate spawner. Pairs form as fish come into condition and claim and defend a patch of bottom around cover, the dark breeding bar serving as a courtship and threat signal. In the variable coastal and lowland-river habitats it occupies, breeding is likely cued partly by season and water conditions rather than proceeding entirely year-round as it does in the thermally constant springs that hold its relatives. As in the tribe Herichthyini, both members of the pair hold the territory jointly, with the female taking the larger share of direct egg and larval care and the male defending the wider perimeter against intruders.
Breeding
Herichthys pantostictus is a biparental substrate spawner. The pair cleans a firm surface — a stone, submerged wood, or the wall of an excavated pit — and the female lays an adhesive clutch of ovoid eggs onto it, after which both parents guard and fan the eggs and then shepherd the free-swimming fry in a school over the bottom. As with its congeners the female concentrates on the eggs and larvae while the male patrols and defends; the parents continue to guard the mobile fry well after they leave the spawning site. The species is a hardy egg-layer and, being more adaptable and less demanding than the spring endemics, is the most straightforward member of its genus to breed in captivity, though it remains a specialist's rather than a community fish.
In the aquarium
Of all the Nosferatu species, the Chairel cichlid is the one most likely to turn up in the specialist Central American hobby, prized as a hardy and adaptable representative of the genus. A pair needs an aquarium of at least roughly 80–100 US gal, longer rather than taller, with a sand or fine-gravel bottom, wood and rockwork to break sightlines and provide spawning surfaces, and the open swimming space a territorial cichlid wants.
Water chemistry should reflect its hard, alkaline origins — it does best at pH above 7.5 with moderate to high hardness — but the species is far more forgiving of variation than its spring-endemic relatives, and its natural tolerance of turbid and slightly brackish water makes it unusually robust to imperfect conditions. A keeping temperature in the mid-20s °C suits it; it handles a wider thermal range (down toward the high teens in its wild lower-river haunts) than the warm-spring species. It is an unfussy feeder that accepts standard aquarium foods, taking a varied carnivore-leaning diet of insect-based frozen and prepared foods readily. Tankmates should be robust, similarly sized Central Americans; a spawning pair becomes firmly territorial and will not tolerate crowding, so this is not a community fish, but among its genus it is the most beginner-accessible — a good entry point for keepers wanting to work with the Mexican snail-eater group without the exacting demands of the spring endemics.
Conservation
Herichthys pantostictus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessed 2 November 2018) — the only member of its genus to carry that comparatively secure status. The basis is its wide distribution across the lower Pánuco and Tamesí drainages and the Gulf coastal lagoons, its tolerance of a broad range of conditions (including turbid and slightly brackish water), and the absence of evidence for a steep population decline. This security is precisely the flip side of the narrow-range vulnerability that has driven its spring-dwelling relatives — bartoni, labridens and steindachneri — into the Endangered category: a habitat generalist with a large coastal range is far less exposed than a single-spring endemic. That said, the lower Pánuco and the coastal lagoons it occupies face real pressures — pollution from agriculture and urban runoff, habitat alteration, and the spread of introduced fishes through the basin — so its status reflects current breadth of range rather than freedom from threat.
