Taxonomy & naming
Katria katria was first described in 1997 by Peter N. Reinthal and Melanie L. J. Stiassny as Ptychochromoides katria, in their revision of the Malagasy genus Ptychochromoides published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. The type material came from the Nosivolo River in the Marolambo region of eastern Madagascar, then assigned to Tamatave (Toamasina) Province. The species sat uneasily within Ptychochromoides from the outset, and in 2006 Stiassny and John S. Sparks, in their phylogenetic and taxonomic revision of the endemic Malagasy genus Ptychochromis (American Museum Novitates 3535) — the same study that described five new Ptychochromis species — erected the new monotypic genus Katria to receive it. The generic name is deliberately tautonymous with the species epithet. Their molecular and morphological analysis recovered katria as distinct from both Ptychochromis and Ptychochromoides, separable by a combination of coloration, oral and pharyngeal dentition, and gill-raker characters. Katria sits in the subfamily Ptychochrominae, the radiation of Malagasy cichlids that also contains Ptychochromis, Ptychochromoides, Oxylapia, and Paratilapia — a lineage whose deep, isolated position on the cichlid tree makes Madagascar's fauna especially valuable for understanding the family's early history. No junior synonyms other than the original combination Ptychochromoides katria are recognized. A similar fish reported by Nourissat and de Rham from the upper Namorona River drainage has never been formally confirmed and is now presumed extirpated, so the genus remains, as described, single-species.
Morphology
Katria katria is a moderately deep-bodied, robust cichlid. FishBase records a maximum of 5 in standard length from the original description, while aquarium-grown fish are reported larger — keepers describe males to roughly 6 in (about six inches) and females somewhat smaller, and some sheets cite total lengths up to 7 in. The fin counts from the type series are diagnostic: 14–15 dorsal spines and 9–11 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 8–9 anal soft rays, with 29–31 vertebrae. The base coloration is a solid, warm golden-brown to bronzy-orange that carries forward onto the head and snout, set off by silvery flecking and contrasting dark markings; the original diagnosis notes two broad black vertical bars across the flanks. The fins tend toward dusky or black. Sexual dimorphism is clear in mature fish: males grow larger, carry stronger bronze-orange color, and develop a conspicuous nuchal hump on the forehead — the feature behind the common name 'humphead Madagascar cichlid.' The species' most theatrical morphological trait is conditional rather than constant: when breeding, both sexes transform into a high-contrast livery of a pale, near-white upper body over a jet-black lower body, a pattern hobbyists have likened to a Herichthys from Mexico, and brooding females display strikingly black pelvic fins used to signal to their fry.
Habitat
Katria katria is a narrow-range endemic known with certainty from a single river: the Nosivolo, a forested tributary of the Mangoro in eastern Madagascar, in the Marolambo region. In FEOW terms this places it in the Madagascar Eastern Highlands freshwater ecoregion, the same upland-rainforest drainage system that holds the related rheophilic cichlid Oxylapia polli. The Nosivolo is a fast, clear, well-oxygenated river running over sand, gravel, and scattered boulders, with very little rooted aquatic vegetation; Katria favors the calmer pools and slower-flowing pockets within this swift water rather than the main rapids. The IUCN assessment characterizes its habitat as clear, cool, forested river water, and notes the species is associated with the forested condition of the catchment. Field and aquarium chemistry point to warm, near-neutral conditions: reported temperatures span roughly 73–84 °F and pH about 6.5–8.5, broadly soft to moderately mineralized tropical river water. As a fish of shallow, wadeable river pools and runs rather than deep lakes, it occupies the upper few metres of the water column; no deep-water occurrence is documented, consistent with a small clear-water river. The Nosivolo as a whole is exceptional — it holds the highest concentration of endemic freshwater fishes in Madagascar and in 2010 became the country's first Ramsar wetland designated specifically for fish conservation.
Feeding
Detailed wild gut-content studies for Katria katria have not been published, but the available evidence points to a generalist carnivore-leaning omnivore. FishBase places its estimated trophic level near 3.3, and Fishipedia classes it as carnivorous; in the aquarium it is described as undemanding and quick to take almost anything offered. As a benthic-oriented river cichlid working a substrate of sand, gravel, and boulders, it is best read as an opportunistic forager on aquatic invertebrates, small benthic organisms, and organic material drawn from the bottom and lower water column, supplemented by whatever drifts past in the current. Captive fish thrive on a varied diet of prepared foods — pellets, spirulina and vitamin-enriched flake — alongside frozen and live items such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, which suggests a flexible, omnivorous gut rather than a narrow specialization. In its native river it functions as one of a tight assemblage of endemic fishes partitioning a single clear-water system, where its bottom-working habit and moderate size place it among the mid-level consumers of the community.
Mating
Outside of breeding, Katria katria is a social fish that lives in loose groups organized around an established dominance hierarchy, and is described as only mildly territorial and generally peaceable toward other species. Reproduction changes this entirely. As a pair forms and ripens, the fish undergo their dramatic colour shift into the black-and-white nuptial dress, and both members become focused on a chosen spawning site. Courtship is prolonged and physical: keepers report extended digging and substrate-clearing, and the genital papillae ('tubes') remain visibly extended for roughly a week while the pair courts and prepares the site. The pair selects and cleans a hard surface — a flat rock, a tile, the wall of a crevice — typically in shallower water. Aggression runs high through this period; the species can be combative both toward conspecific rivals and, in confined quarters, toward an ill-matched partner, which is the main reason it is regarded as a fish for experienced keepers despite being otherwise hardy. Once a bond holds, the pair settles into the classic cichlid division of labour that carries through spawning and brood care.
Breeding
Katria katria is a biparental substrate (open-surface) spawner that guards its brood — the ancestral cichlid mode, not a mouthbrooder. Maturity is reached at a small size, around 3 in (roughly three inches). Eggs are deposited on a cleaned hard surface, in nature on rock in the shallows and in aquaria readily on terracotta tiles or rock faces within a cave-like structure; reported clutches run to several hundred eggs, with hobbyist accounts of about 250–500. The female tends and fans the eggs and resulting larvae while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory, and the pair are described as attentive, capable parents. At typical temperatures the eggs hatch in about three days, and the fry become free-swimming a further three to four days after that. The fry are small but immediately able to take newly hatched brine shrimp. A notable detail of the brood phase is the female's communication with her young: she signals with fin-flicks and her conspicuously blackened pelvic fins, to which the fry respond as a school. Young grow relatively slowly at first, with a growth spurt once they pass about an inch before slowing again; they are otherwise straightforward to raise.
In the aquarium
Katria katria is a hardy but uncommon aquarium fish, rarely available in the trade and generally regarded as a project for the more experienced keeper — not because it is delicate, but because of its aggression and its demanding water-quality and oxygen needs. The species can be pugnacious, so space matters: a large footprint is strongly advised, with experienced keepers recommending something on the order of a six-foot tank for a group, furnished so that subordinate fish and unpaired adults can break line of sight and retreat. Robust, non-aggressive dither/target fish help diffuse aggression; milder mbuna have been used successfully in this role. The single most important husbandry point is that this is a river fish with a high oxygen demand. It needs vigorously oxygenated, clean water but not a torrent of current — the practical solution reported is heavy aeration (for example, multiple air-driven sponge filters in a large tank) rather than high-flow powerheads, combined with large, frequent water changes of around 50–75% weekly to hold nitrogenous waste down. Like most Madagascan cichlids it prefers warmth: a minimum around 77–79 °F (78 °F), with best condition and breeding in the low-to-mid 82 °F range (82–84 °F). Water chemistry is forgiving within the warm, near-neutral band of its native river — roughly pH 6.5–8.5 — so soft, acidic conditioning is unnecessary. A substrate of sand and rounded gravel with rockwork, flat stones, and tile suits both its digging behaviour and its open-surface spawning, and gives breeders the hard surfaces the pair will choose. Feeding is easy: a varied diet of quality pellet and flake (including a spirulina component) plus frozen or live bloodworms and brine shrimp keeps colour and condition. Breeding is achievable but can be a challenge, chiefly because of pair aggression; matching a compatible pair in a large, well-structured tank is the key to success. The honest summary is a beautiful, characterful, conservation-significant fish that rewards a keeper able to give it room, oxygen, and clean water — and that, sadly, is too seldom seen in the hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Katria katria as Endangered (EN B1ab(iii)), assessed on 29 June 2016 by J. S. Sparks, with a decreasing population trend. The listing rests on the species' extremely restricted range — it is reliably known from a single location in the Nosivolo River — combined with ongoing degradation of that habitat. The threats named in the assessment are deforestation of the catchment and the resulting siltation and loss of the clear-water, forested conditions the fish depends on, compounded more recently by gold mining and overfishing. These pressures sit within a wider crisis: Madagascar's freshwater fishes are among the most threatened vertebrate faunas anywhere, with a large fraction of the island's endemic species assessed as threatened, driven by deforestation, agricultural expansion, sedimentation, and introduced species such as tilapias and snakeheads. There are, however, grounds for cautious hope specific to this fish. The Nosivolo was designated Madagascar's first Ramsar site established for fish conservation in 2010 — recognized as the river with the highest concentration of endemic freshwater fishes in the country — pairing legal protection with community livelihood programmes. Katria katria has also drawn attention in reviews of ex-situ conservation of threatened Malagasy fishes, reflecting the recognized value of maintaining captive assurance populations of a monotypic, single-river endemic whose wild future is far from secure. It carries no CITES or CMS listing.
