Taxonomy & naming
Ptychochromoides vondrozo was described in 2001 by the American ichthyologists John S. Sparks and Peter N. Reinthal, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, from collections made in southeastern Madagascar. The holotype, an adult catalogued as UMMZ 235297 in the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, was taken in the Ramanara River, a tributary of the Sahampindra in the upper Mananara du Sud drainage, near the village of Vevembe in the region of Vondrozo, Fianarantsoa Province, at roughly 22°49′ S, 47°08′ E and about 1699 ft elevation; paratypes are held at the American Museum of Natural History and the University of Arizona. The fish belongs to the subfamily Ptychochrominae, a small radiation of cichlids found only on Madagascar, and to the genus Ptychochromoides, erected by Kiener and Maugé in 1966 — the name simply meaning 'resembling Ptychochromis', the genus in which its relatives had previously been placed. Ptychochromoides is a tiny genus of three described species: the type species Ptychochromoides betsileanus of the central highlands, the presumed-extinct (later rediscovered) P. itasy of Lake Itasy, and Ptychochromoides vondrozo. Sparks and Reinthal recovered Ptychochromoides vondrozo as the sister species of Ptychochromoides betsileanus, and their paper doubled as an argument for the monophyly of the ptychochromine cichlids. A fourth former member of the genus, 'Ptychochromoides' katria, was subsequently moved to its own genus Katria by Stiassny and Sparks in 2006. The species epithet is not a Latinized adjective but a noun in apposition — the name of the nearest mapped village to the type locality.
Morphology
This is a stocky, deep-bodied cichlid that reaches at least 8 in in standard length, making it the largest member of its genus. The fin formula given in the original description is 13 to 15 dorsal spines and 10 to 13 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 9 to 10 anal soft rays, with 29 to 31 vertebrae. In life the ground colour is a vivid golden-olive, overlaid by an irregular, brownish-to-black blotchy and speckled lateral pattern that gives the fish a marbled appearance and has earned it the book name 'marbled Madagascar cichlid'. The single most useful diagnostic character separating it from its congeners is a negative one: Ptychochromoides vondrozo lacks the prominent fatty (adipose) occipital hump that swells the forehead of the other Ptychochromoides, and it lacks it in both sexes and even in large adults. From its sister species Ptychochromoides betsileanus it is further distinguished by a shallower caudal peduncle (12.9–14.8 % of standard length versus 15.8–18.1 %), a noticeably convex snout profile with a conspicuous bony prominence above the upper lip, and a higher modal vertebral count of 30 rather than 29. From the smaller Katria katria it differs in its larger adult size, its mottled rather than plain golden-brown coloration, more gill rakers, and cycloid scales spread across the chest and belly. Sexual dimorphism in this species has not been formally documented; as in most substrate-spawning cichlids, mature males are expected to grow somewhat larger and heavier-headed than females, but no quantified differences are on record.
Habitat
Ptychochromoides vondrozo is endemic to the upper Mananara du Sud river basin on the eastern slope of the southeastern Madagascar highlands, and it is one of the most narrowly distributed cichlids on the island — the IUCN estimates its entire extent of occurrence at only about 1,31 mi². It is reliably known from forest streams and rivers near the towns of Vevembe and Vondrozo, with unconfirmed reports from the Manapatrana River, which runs through a sacred forest where collecting is forbidden. The species lives in the relatively undisturbed, well-forested, fast-flowing rivers typical of this ecoregion. Its habitat at Vevembe is described as deep and seasonally turbid, with moderate to swift current; the bottom is largely sand interspersed with small to large rocks and boulders, and the channel alternates between areas of still water and deep pools and stretches of swift flow. These eastern-highland rivers run year-round, are normally clear and well oxygenated when intact, and carry slightly acidic, soft, low-carbonate water — the regional water chemistry described for the Madagascar Eastern Highlands freshwater ecoregion (FEOW 581), to which this species is essentially confined. The fish was originally collected on hook and line baited with dragonfly (Odonata) larvae, a small clue to both its diet and its preference for deeper, structured water.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Ptychochromoides vondrozo has been published, and the species is best described as a generalized benthic feeder of swift, rocky-bottomed rivers. The original collectors took specimens on hook and line using the aquatic larvae of dragonflies and damselflies as bait, which establishes that large insect larvae are readily taken and points to a diet centred on benthic invertebrates picked from sand and rock. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.4, the value of a small invertivore-leaning omnivore rather than a specialist predator or a herbivore. Its larger relatives in the genus and subfamily are robust, broadly omnivorous cichlids that crop a mix of invertebrates, detritus, algae and plant material, and Ptychochromoides vondrozo is most plausibly the same — a substrate-oriented opportunist working the boulders, pools and sandy patches of its home rivers. In the absence of gut-content data, anything more specific would be guesswork.
Mating
The courtship and pair-forming behaviour of Ptychochromoides vondrozo has not been observed or recorded — the species has scarcely been studied alive and, so far as the literature shows, has never been kept in aquaria. What can be said is framed by its membership in the Ptychochrominae, a subfamily of substrate-spawning cichlids that form pairs and defend territories rather than mouthbrooding. By analogy with its better-known relatives, including the congeneric Ptychochromoides betsileanus and the larger ptychochromine Ptychochromis species, Ptychochromoides vondrozo is expected to be a biparental cichlid in which a male and female establish and jointly guard a territory around a chosen spawning site on the riverbed before laying. The specifics — how pairs form, whether males hold display territories, the nature of any courtship colour change — remain undocumented for this species and should be treated as inference rather than observation.
Breeding
Breeding has never been documented in Ptychochromoides vondrozo, in the wild or in captivity, and PlanetCatfish carries no breeding report for the species. It is confidently classed as a biparental substrate (open- or cave-) spawner on the strength of its phylogenetic position: every member of the Malagasy subfamily Ptychochrominae whose reproduction is known is a substrate spawner that deposits adhesive eggs on a cleaned surface and guards them as a pair, in contrast to the mouthbrooding so common among mainland African cichlids. Genus-typical clutches for substrate-spawning ptychochromines of this body size run to the order of several hundred eggs, but no actual clutch count, egg or larval description, or developmental timeline exists for Ptychochromoides vondrozo, and none should be invented for it. Both parents would be expected to tend the eggs and shepherd the free-swimming fry, as is the rule for the subfamily. Until the species is bred — most likely, if at all, through a conservation breeding programme of the kind that has rescued other critically threatened Malagasy cichlids — these details remain blank.
In the aquarium
Ptychochromoides vondrozo is, for practical purposes, an aquarium unknown. It is not in the ornamental trade, there is no record of it being kept by hobbyists, and PlanetCatfish lists neither a single keeper nor a single breeding report for the species. Any husbandry guidance is therefore extrapolated from its wild habitat and from experience with its larger, occasionally maintained Malagasy relatives such as Ptychochromoides betsileanus and the Ptychochromis cichlids. A fish that exceeds 8 in and comes from deep, fast, structured rivers would need a large tank — on the order of a metre and a half of length and several hundred litres for a pair — with a sand base, generous rockwork and boulders to break the line of sight and define territories, brisk filtration and strong oxygenation to mimic flowing water, and warm, soft, slightly acidic conditions in the rough range of 72–79 °F and pH near 6.5–7.5. Like other large ptychochromines it should be expected to be territorial and intolerant of conspecifics outside a bonded pair, so a roomy tank and careful pairing would be essential. None of this is tested for vondrozo specifically; it is offered as a sketch, not a recipe. Given the fish's Endangered status and absence from the trade, the only legitimate reason to keep it would be a managed conservation programme, and wild collection for the hobby would be indefensible.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Ptychochromoides vondrozo as Endangered under criterion B1ab(i,ii,iii) — a verdict driven entirely by its tiny, fragmented range. The assessment, by John Sparks, was published in 2016 (assessed 14 May 2016) and rests on an extent of occurrence of less than 5,0 mi² (estimated at roughly 1,31 mi²) confined to a single location in the upper Mananara du Sud basin near Vondrozo, Ivohibe and Midongy Atsimo. The population trend is recorded as unknown, and the species is described as fragmented and not common across even its small range. The principal threats are continued deforestation in the catchment and the resulting sedimentation of these clear, fast forest rivers, compounded by introduced exotic fishes — the same pressures that have driven Madagascar's freshwater cichlids into one of the most imperilled fish faunas on Earth and have already extirpated congeners such as P. itasy from much of their former range. On the positive side, the species occurs within a protected area: it falls inside the Corridor Forestier Ambositra–Vondrozo (the Fandriana–Vondrozo forest corridor), and the Vevembe/Vondrozo region was flagged for further protection as early as the late 1990s. Its survival, however, depends on that forest corridor holding — on the rivers staying forested, clear and free of invasive predators.
