Taxonomy & naming
Laetacara araguaiae was described by the Brazilian ichthyologists Felipe P. Ottoni and Wilson J. E. M. Costa of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 2009, in the journal Vertebrate Zoology (volume 59, part 1), in a paper that simultaneously redescribed Laetacara dorsigera. The holotype (UFRJ 7557, a 1.5 in SL specimen) was collected near a buriti palm by the rio Verde, about 20 mi north of São Miguel do Araguaia in the rio Araguaia basin, Estado de Goiás, central Brazil. The genus Laetacara was erected by Sven Kullander in 1986 to receive several small cichlids previously parked in the catch-all Aequidens; it belongs to the tribe Cichlasomatini within the subfamily Cichlasomatinae (Cichlinae in some treatments). Ottoni and Costa diagnosed araguaiae chiefly by its unusually low dorsal-fin ray count (7–8 soft rays, versus 9–10 in most congeners), a narrow ectopterygoid, cycloid scales on the sides of the head, the presence of a spot at the caudal-fin base, and the absence of a spot in the dorsal fin. The species had been familiar to aquarists long before it had a name. It first reached the German hobby in 1949 under the misapplied label Aequidens thayeri — an understandable error given the imprecise original description of that western-Amazonian species and how little was then known of Amazonian fish distributions. By 1978 German hobbyists recognised they were dealing with an undescribed fish and coined the working name Aequidens (later Laetacara) sp. "Buckelkopf," German for "hump-head." Catalog of Fishes records the species as valid and notes occurrences beyond the type basin, in the Amazon basin proper and the upper Paraná drainage of Brazil.
Morphology
This is a small, deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid. The type series ran small — FishBase lists a maximum of 1.5 in SL from the preserved material — but well-grown aquarium fish are considerably larger: Paul Loiselle reports males reaching about 3 in SL (though specimens over 2.5 in are unusual) and females rarely exceeding 2 in SL, comfortably placing the species in the dwarf-cichlid size class. Body colour is a light brown ground overlaid with blue-green iridescence on the lower flank, two yellowish horizontal stripes running from the gill cover to the tail, and a broken dark longitudinal stripe crossed by seven dark, often forked vertical bars. Two dark blotches are diagnostic: an elliptical spot at the caudal-fin base and a second on the mid-flank over the fifth body bar; crucially, there is no spot in the dorsal fin (a feature separating it from curviceps and dorsigera). The genus owes its English name, "smiling acara," to dark markings around the snout and lower jaw that lend the face a fixed grin. Colour varies geographically: fish from the Araguaia and Tocantins carry blue and red tones, while those traded from the rio Tapajós are predominantly turquoise-green. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle. Males grow larger, develop the rounded "Buckelkopf" forehead with age, and have more pointed soft dorsal and anal fins; females are smaller, fuller-bodied, show less coppery-orange on the flanks, and — unlike most Laetacara — usually lack the clear rectangular dorsal-fin spot that makes other smiling acaras easy to sex. When breeding, both sexes darken dramatically, the faint markings hardening into bold black bars and the red accents deepening.
Habitat
Laetacara araguaiae is endemic to Brazil. The type material came from the rio Verde in the rio Araguaia basin of Goiás, but the species is more widely distributed across central and eastern Brazil: it has been reported from the Araguaia and the lower Tocantins, the Tapajós and Xingu, and from Marajó Island at the mouth of the Amazon, with Catalog of Fishes additionally listing the upper Paraná drainage. These south-bank Amazon tributaries are largely clearwater rivers, a point with real consequences for husbandry — unlike the blackwater dwarf cichlids of the Rio Negro, araguaiae is not tied to extremely soft, highly acidic water. It is a benthopelagic fish of warm tropical lowlands, found over soft substrates among submerged structure and marginal vegetation in the quieter reaches and lagoons of these basins. In-situ chemistry has not been published in detail, but the conditions under which the species thrives — gently acidic to neutral water (around pH 6.0–7.2), moderate hardness, and temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F — reflect a clearwater rather than blackwater biotope. As a small fish of shallow stream and lagoon margins, it occupies the uppermost few metres of the water column; FishBase carries no formal depth range, consistent with a shallow-water habitat generalist.
Feeding
Laetacara araguaiae is a micropredator and opportunistic benthic carnivore. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.1, and in the wild it works the bottom and lower water column for small invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and similar prey taken from the substrate and among plant roots and leaf litter. It is not a dedicated sand-sifter on the scale of the eartheaters, but like other cichlasomatines it picks and winnows mouthfuls of fine sediment for edible items. In captivity it is undemanding: live and frozen foods such as grindal worms, blackworms, bloodworms (chironomid larvae), glassworms, daphnia and brine shrimp are eagerly taken and make ideal conditioning foods, while prepared flakes and small pellets are accepted, sometimes with less enthusiasm. Within the community it functions as a small, ground-oriented invertivore that poses no threat to comparably sized open-water fishes.
Mating
Outside the breeding season Laetacara araguaiae is a notably peaceful, even retiring cichlid — it is bolder and shows its colours best when kept alongside small dither fish such as tetras, rasboras or danios, and it ignores Corydoras and small loricariid catfishes. Pairs form within a group, and the standard hobby practice is to raise a half-dozen youngsters together and let a pair establish naturally, removing the surplus once a bond sets. Once paired, the fish claim and hold a territory; sexual maturity comes early, with young reaching about 1 in SL by two months and capable of pairing and spawning by around eight months of age. The behavioural shift that accompanies reproduction is dramatic. A pair guarding eggs or fry undergoes a Jekyll-and-Hyde transformation, darkening in colour and defending its territory with a ferocity out of all proportion to the fish's size; tankmates unable to retreat beyond the territory boundary can be seriously injured or killed. Territorial defence falls largely to the male, while both sexes share the close brood care.
Breeding
Laetacara araguaiae is a biparental, open substrate spawner and a surprisingly prolific one. The female deposits a compact plaque of several hundred eggs — reports range up to around 500 — onto a cleaned solid surface such as a flat stone, a leaf, or a piece of wood. Both parents tend the clutch, fanning and cleaning the eggs and later guarding the wrigglers and free-swimming fry; territorial defence is mainly the male's job. The eggs hatch in about 72 hours (two to three days), and the fry are free-swimming roughly five to seven days post-spawning. The young are large enough at first feeding to take Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii, microworms or vinegar eels straight away, with finely powdered flake added within a week. Parental care can extend up to about six weeks, though captive pairs frequently re-spawn sooner; because adults will not tolerate older fry near a fresh clutch, breeders typically separate the broods roughly three weeks after the fry become free-swimming. Breeding is considered straightforward given a compatible pair and clean, appropriately soft, gently acidic water, with a temperature rise toward 86 °F used to trigger spawning. Growth is fairly rapid under good feeding and frequent water changes.
In the aquarium
The Araguaia dwarf acara is an excellent, under-appreciated aquarium fish — colourful, hardy, peaceable, and easy to breed — that for now is overshadowed in the trade by Apistogramma and Mikrogeophagus, and (unlike Laetacara curviceps and Laetacara dorsigera) has not yet been taken up by commercial fish farms. A single pair can be housed in a tank from about 36 inches (roughly 3 ft, ~25 US gal) long; that footprint also allows the species to be kept with other South American dwarf cichlids. Because these are clearwater fish, they do not need the extreme blackwater chemistry many Amazonian dwarfs demand: pH values between about 6.0 and 7.2 and hardness up to roughly 10 °dH suit them well, with breeders favouring the softer, slightly acidic end (around pH 6.0–6.5, GH 5–8). This is a strictly tropical lowland fish that does not tolerate chilling — maintain 75–82 °F (about 72–82 °F) day to day, raising the temperature toward 86 °F to induce spawning.
Décor should mimic a structured clearwater margin: a dark fine substrate, driftwood, roots, and a few flat stones to serve as potential spawning sites, with subdued lighting (easily achieved with floating plants) to bring out the fish's colours. Laetacara neither eat nor uproot plants, so a well-planted tank is ideal and in fact shows them at their best. Standard good housekeeping applies — efficient but gentle filtration without strong current, and regular water changes; the fry respond markedly to clean water. Feeding is easy (see Feeding above), with live and frozen foods producing the best colour and condition.
The one genuine caveat is breeding aggression. A spawning pair becomes intensely territorial and can harm or kill tankmates that cannot get away, so a breeding tank wants enough room and structure for others to keep their distance, or should be given over to the pair. Outside of spawning, however, this is one of the most companionable dwarf cichlids available, entirely safe with small schooling fishes and catfishes — the kind of fish that rewards a keeper looking past the usual dwarf-cichlid suspects.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Laetacara araguaiae as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade and P. Reis; published 2022), with a population described as stable. The species is endemic to Brazil but ranges across several large central-Brazilian drainages, and no species-specific threats are flagged. It carries no CITES listing and is harmless to humans. As with all fishes of the Amazon and central-Brazilian river systems, the broader backdrop is one of mounting pressure on freshwater habitats — dam construction, deforestation, mining and altered flood regimes — but none of these is documented as a present danger to this widespread, adaptable dwarf cichlid. Its modest but steady presence in the aquarium trade is drawn from wild stock; given how readily it breeds in captivity, commercial propagation could easily supply demand.
