Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia araguaiensis was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1991, originally as Pamphorichthys araguaiensis, in a paper in the Revue française d'Aquariologie dealing with a new species of the genus Pamphorichthys from the Araguaia basin. The specific epithet refers directly to the Rio Araguaia, the river system that yielded the type material. Costa's revision of the group recognised five species in Pamphorichthys at the time — P. araguaiensis alongside P. hasemani, P. scalpridens, P. hollandi and P. minor.
The genus Pamphorichthys, erected in 1924, is treated by subsequent workers as a subgenus of Poecilia, which gives the valid combination Poecilia araguaiensis used here. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name. The species sits in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, order Cyprinodontiformes — the New World livebearing toothcarps that include the guppies, mollies and platies. The Pamphorichthys lineage has since grown with the addition of Poecilia (Pamphorichthys) akroa Figueiredo & Moreira, 2018, from the Rio Tocantins basin, bringing the subgenus to roughly seven species of these dwarf livebearers.
The phylogenetic placement of the group within the tribe Poeciliini was examined by Rodriguez (1997), and the cluster of small-bodied Pamphorichthys species remains the principal taxonomic context for P. araguaiensis. Beyond the original description and these systematic treatments, the species has attracted little dedicated study, so much of what can responsibly be said about it rests on these primary sources and on the shared biology of the family.
