Taxonomy & naming
Maylandia chrysomallos was described in 1997 by Jay R. Stauffer Jr., N.J. Bowers, K.A. Kellogg and K.R. McKaye, in their landmark revision of the blue-black Pseudotropheus zebra complex published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 148, pages 189–230). That paper simultaneously erected the new genus Metriaclima and described ten new species within it, chrysomallos among them; the holotype (PSU 3052) was collected at Mumbo Island, off Cape Maclear in the south-eastern arm of the lake, at a depth of one to five metres. The fish is also well documented from Chinyamwezi and Chinyankwazi islands and along the south-eastern (Malawi–Mozambique 'Border') shoreline.
The genus name carries a long-running nomenclatural dispute that anyone reading about these fish should understand. Stauffer et al. 1997 coined Metriaclima (from the Greek for 'moderately sloping,' for the head profile). But the name Maylandia — applied in 1984 by Meyer, Riehl and Zetzsche, honouring the German aquarist and author Hans-Joachim Mayland — predates it and, under the strict priority rule of zoological nomenclature, is the senior synonym. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority this atlas follows for valid names, accordingly lists the species as valid under Maylandia chrysomallos, with Metriaclima treated as a synonym; that is the combination used here. The dispute is real and not merely clerical: Ad Konings, the foremost field authority on Malawi cichlids, continued to use Metriaclima in his books, and the European-oriented cichlid press and the IUCN Red List still do, so readers will frequently encounter the fish as Metriaclima chrysomallos. Both names point to the same animal.
Within the genus, chrysomallos belongs to the zebra (or 'BB' — blue-black) group. Stauffer et al. diagnosed it chiefly by the gold highlights over the light-blue ground colour of both sexes and by the way the vertical flank bars continue up into the dorsal fin — characters that separate it from the many superficially similar zebra-group congeners scattered around the lake.
Morphology
This is a moderately sized mbuna. FishBase records a maximum of 3.5 in standard length (SL) from the original description; in the lake and aquarium, males reach a larger total length, broadly in line with the 4–5 in total length typical of zebra-group males. Meristics from the description run to 16–19 dorsal spines and 8–10 soft rays, 3 anal spines and 6–9 soft rays. The body is the fusiform, moderately compressed shape standard for the mbuna guild — built for manoeuvring among boulders rather than open-water cruising — and the head shows the moderately sloped profile that gave the genus its (disputed) name.
Colour is the species' signature. Both sexes carry a light-blue ground colour overlaid with gold highlights along the sides — the 'golden fleece' of the name — crossed by dark vertical bars that, distinctively, continue into the dorsal fin rather than stopping at its base. Territorial males show the cleanest blue-and-gold pattern; in some populations (the 'Border' form, for instance) the gold is reduced and males appear a plainer blue. Females and non-territorial males are duller. As in most zebra-group mbuna, sexual dichromatism is present but less extreme than in the yellow-female (Flavifemina) group; the surest sex difference is behavioural and in the anal-fin egg-spots of mature males.
Habitat
Maylandia chrysomallos is a Lake Malawi endemic, confined to the south-eastern portion of the lake in Malawian and Mozambican waters. Confirmed localities include Mumbo Island (the type locality, off Cape Maclear), the small islands of Chinyamwezi and Chinyankwazi, and the south-eastern 'Border' shoreline; FishBase summarises its distribution simply as the south-eastern arm of the lake in Malawi and Mozambique.
Like the rest of its group it is a rock-dweller, occupying the boulder-strewn and rocky-shore habitats where aufwuchs is richest. The type series came from one to five metres, and the species is a fish of the upper rocky zone rather than the deep intermediate sediment habitats favoured by some of its congeners. Lake Malawi sets the chemical frame: an ancient, deeply stratified, strongly buffered rift lake with surface waters around 75–82 °F, a pH that runs alkaline at roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderate hardness. These conditions are stable across the species' island-and-shore range.
Feeding
Maylandia chrysomallos is an aufwuchs grazer, the dominant trophic guild among mbuna. Aufwuchs is the dense biofilm of algae, diatoms, filamentous cyanobacteria, associated micro-invertebrates and detritus that coats rock surfaces in the lake's shallows — a packed mat rather than discrete plants. Zebra-group mbuna comb this material loose with their bicuspid outer teeth, working the rock at a steep angle and raking off diatoms and short algal strands. The diet is overwhelmingly plant- and biofilm-based.
That herbivorous bias has a direct husbandry consequence: like all aufwuchs specialists, chrysomallos has a long intestine adapted to plant matter and is susceptible to the digestive disorder hobbyists call 'Malawi bloat' when overfed high-protein animal foods. A diet built on spirulina and other vegetable-based foods reflects the natural ecology far better than meaty fare.
Mating
Social organisation follows the standard mbuna template: males hold and defend territories among the rocks, each typically centred on a cave or sheltered crevice that doubles as the spawning site, while females range more loosely and are courted at territory boundaries. The intensity of male defence is high, as in most zebra-group species — neighbouring males tolerate each other only at a distance, and intrusions by rival males or similarly coloured fish are met with vigorous chasing.
No behavioural study specific to chrysomallos has been published, but the courtship is the familiar haplochromine-mbuna sequence: the territorial male, in full blue-and-gold breeding dress, performs lateral displays and shimmying movements to lead a receptive female into his shelter. Because the sexes differ in colour and the males advertise from fixed territories, mate choice is visual and site-based. Aggression does not relax greatly outside breeding, which is the central management challenge of the species in captivity.
Breeding
Maylandia chrysomallos is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode of virtually all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids. Spawning takes place in the male's territory: the pair circles in the classic mbuna sequence, the female laying a few eggs at a time and immediately taking them into her mouth, then nosing at the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin as he releases milt, so that fertilisation occurs in or at the mouth. The sequence repeats until the clutch — modest, in keeping with the species' intermediate size, likely on the order of one to a few dozen eggs — is complete.
The female then carries the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, eating little or nothing, before releasing free-swimming fry; she provides no further care once they are released, and the male none after fertilisation. No clutch-size or brooding-duration figures specific to chrysomallos have been published, so the numbers given here are inferred from closely related zebra-group mbuna rather than recorded for this species. In aquaria the cycle replicates readily once a dominant male and conditioned females are established, and the relatively large fry take crushed flake from the start.
In the aquarium
Maylandia chrysomallos appears in the hobby, though far less commonly than ubiquitous zebra-group fish such as Maylandia estherae or Maylandia zebra, and is usually sourced through specialist mbuna breeders by location variant (Mumbo, Chinyamwezi, 'Border'). For anyone who has kept mbuna before it is a straightforward, hardy fish; the gold-over-blue colour is its main attraction.
A tank of around 65–80 US gal is a sensible minimum for a single male with three or four females, and more is better if the species is to be combined with other mbuna. Like all rock-dwellers from Malawi it requires hard, alkaline water — pH roughly 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, moderate to hard general hardness — maintained with the standard Malawi-aquarium kit of a crushed-coral or aragonite substrate, high filter turnover, and regular generous water changes. Soft, acidic water is incompatible with long-term health.
Decoration should be overwhelmingly rock: stacked stones forming caves, ledges and passages replicate the boulder fields the fish occupies and, just as importantly, fragment sightlines so that aggression is dispersed rather than concentrated on one victim. A sand base lets females forage and retreat. Tankmate selection follows ordinary mbuna rules — other robust mbuna of similar size and, crucially, different colour, since males will harry conspecific-looking rivals. Two males of chrysomallos in the same ordinary-sized tank is a recipe for sustained fighting; one male is usually the right number. Diet is the most consequential decision: spirulina-based flake or pellet and vegetable foods, not a protein-heavy regime, because this is an aufwuchs grazer prone to bloat. Breeding needs no special intervention beyond a settled group; moving a brooding female to a quiet tank improves fry survival in a community.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed the species (as Metriaclima chrysomallos) as Near Threatened, with the assessment dated 2018. The reasoning is distribution-based: it is restricted to a cluster of islands and a stretch of south-eastern shoreline rather than being lake-wide, which gives it a relatively small range and makes it sensitive to localised pressures even though it is locally common where it occurs. There is no CITES or CMS listing.
That restricted distribution is the heart of the concern. The south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi, including the Cape Maclear / Lake Malawi National Park area near Mumbo Island, carries significant human pressure — shoreline sedimentation from catchment deforestation and agriculture, and some collection for the ornamental trade. None of these is recorded as driving an active population decline in chrysomallos specifically, but for a fish with a small range any of them could affect the whole population at once. This sits within the broader context of Lake Malawi's condition: basin-scale reviews, most recently Chavula et al. (2023) in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, document accelerating threats including heavy fishing pressure, sediment and nutrient loading, and climate-driven warming that weakens the lake's seasonal mixing and threatens the productive upper waters where mbuna live. These are the pressures against which the long-term security of every Malawi endemic, including this one, should be measured.
