Mesoheros atromaculatus, the black-spot cichlid, is a medium-sized substrate-spawning cichlid from the rainforest rivers of the Chocó and Darién — the Atrato, San Juan and Baudó basins of Pacific Colombia and adjacent eastern Panama. It is one of only a handful of cichlids in the small genus Mesoheros, a South American lineage that is, oddly, phylogenetically nested deep inside the Middle American cichlid radiation. Named for the chain of dark blotches along its flanks, it remains an uncommon and somewhat enigmatic fish in the hobby, prized by a few specialists but rarely bred in captivity.

Name history

Taxonomy & naming

The black-spot cichlid was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1912, in a short paper on new South American cichlids in the collections of the British Museum. Regan placed it in the catch-all genus of the day, naming it Cichlosoma (Parapetenia) atromaculatum, with the type locality given as Tado on the Río San Juan in the Chocó department of western Colombia; the syntype series (BMNH 1910.7.11.83-88) is held in the Natural History Museum, London. Over the following century the species was shuffled through the unstable nomenclature of the heroine cichlids — listed at various times under Cichlasoma, Nandopsis (Burgess 2000) and Herichthys — while Kullander, in the 2003 Reis et al. checklist of South American freshwater fishes, kept it as an incertae sedis species of 'Cichlasoma' pending revision. That revision came with the molecular and morphological reappraisal of the heroine cichlids in the mid-2010s. McMahan & Chakrabarty (2015) erected the genus Mesoheros for this small group, and the placement was confirmed by Musilová et al. (2015) and by Říčan, Piálek, Dragová & Novák's (2016) comprehensive reclassification of the Middle American cichlids — the same work that split many former Cichlasoma into well-defined genera such as Theraps, Cribroheros and Darienheros. Mesoheros today contains only a few species — atromaculatus alongside festae (the 'red terror'), ornatus and gephyrus — and forms the so-called festae group. Its biogeography is notable: although these are South American and lower-Central-American fish, the genus is recovered phylogenetically within the otherwise Middle American Heroini, a relict of the cichlid exchange across the Isthmus of Panama.

Morphology

Mesoheros atromaculatus is a moderately deep-bodied, ovate cichlid of the typical heroine plan, reaching about 10 in in total length (FishBase), with most adults closer to 8 in; reported longevity is on the order of seven years. The ground colour is a muted olive-tan to silvery grey, frequently overlaid with rows of small pale or bluish spots on the scales and, on the head, scattered light-blue flecks. The diagnostic feature — and the source of both the scientific epithet and the English name — is a longitudinal series of dark, roughly rounded blotches along the flank: in Regan's original account, one series of blackish spots running above the lateral line and two below it. A dark mid-lateral blotch and a spot at the caudal-fin base are usually the most conspicuous. Like many heroines the fish flips its pattern dramatically with mood and stress: a startled or subordinate individual throws up a set of bold black vertical bars across the whole body, a striking 'stress livery' that aquarists use to read the animal's state. Sexual dimorphism is present but modest. Males grow larger and develop more produced, pointed dorsal- and anal-fin tips with age, while ripe females are rounder and deeper-bellied; coloration overlaps broadly between the sexes, so vent inspection is the surest method when pairing. The species is far less gaudy than its famous relative the red terror (Mesoheros festae), in which breeding females flush brilliant red — atromaculatus stays comparatively plain throughout.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the trans-Andean, Pacific-and-Caribbean-draining lowlands of the Chocó-Darién — a region of exceptionally high rainfall and one of the wettest places on Earth. The Catalog of Fishes and FishBase give its range as the Atrato, San Juan and Baudó river basins of Colombia, and the IUCN assessment extends it across the border into eastern Panama (including Tuira/Darién-area and Caribbean-slope drainages such as the Changuinola). All of this falls within the single freshwater ecoregion North Andean Pacific Slopes — Rio Atrato (FEOW 301), which runs from the Golfo de San Miguel in Panamá southward through the Darién and the Colombian Chocó. It is a benthopelagic inhabitant of small-to-medium rivers and slow forest streams, where it forages over bottoms of sand, gravel, rock and leaf litter and habitually digs. In-situ water chemistry is regionally variable and worth flagging: the Cichlid Room Companion reports the type population in the Río Atrato living in very soft, acidic blackwater at pH 5.5-6.0, while keepers familiar with the Panamanian side note that much of that region's water is hard and alkaline (rainfall there running near pH 8). FishBase summarises the species as tolerant of a wide envelope — pH roughly 5.5-7.5, very soft (dH 0-3) — at tropical temperatures of about 73–84 °F. In other words, this is a warm-water fish adapted to soft acidic rainforest rivers at the type locality, but with populations spanning a broad chemical range across its range.

Feeding

Mesoheros atromaculatus is a generalist carnivore-leaning omnivore that works the bottom and lower water column. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a diet built around benthic invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and shrimp — supplemented by whatever else the substrate yields, in the manner documented for its congener Mesoheros festae, which feeds on benthic organisms such as small shrimps. The fish is an inveterate digger, sifting and rearranging sand as it searches for buried prey, a behaviour that doubles as territory construction. It is not a specialist piscivore on the scale of the larger, more predatory red terror, but a medium-sized opportunist that takes live, fresh and prepared foods readily. In its native rivers it functions as one of the mid-level invertebrate foragers of the leaf-litter and soft-sediment zones.

Mating

Outside of breeding, black-spot cichlids are comparatively social and, by the standards of the festae group, fairly mild — keepers describe lone fish and groups as relatively inoffensive, a notable contrast to the explosive aggression of Mesoheros festae and Mesoheros gephyrus. Reproduction, however, reorganises the fish around defended territories and pair bonds. As with most heroines, a pair forms from within a group through mutual display and substrate-cleaning, after which both partners hold and defend a territory centred on the chosen spawning surface. The flip side of the species' general tolerance is that conspecific males will not abide one another once mature: confrontations between rival males can be intense and end in the submission or death of the loser, and a poorly matched pair can turn lethal in confined space. The reliable route to a compatible pair is therefore to raise a group of five or more and let a bond form naturally, rather than forcing two adults together.

Breeding

Mesoheros atromaculatus is a biparental open-substrate spawner. The female deposits her eggs in a single layer on a cleaned flat surface — typically a flat stone or a patch of firm substrate — with FishBase citing clutches of up to about 3,000 eggs in a large female, a genus-typical figure for these productive heroines. Care is shared but asymmetric: the female takes the leading role in tending and fanning the eggs and shepherding the wrigglers and free-swimming fry, while the male patrols and defends the wider territory, the classic heroine division of labour. After hatching, the parents guide the school of fry, pitting the substrate into nursery depressions and herding the young back to cover at any disturbance. In captivity the species has a reputation as difficult to spawn successfully: long-time keepers report pairs laying eggs repeatedly over years yet rarely producing viable, free-swimming broods, and tank-raised fish remain scarce in the trade. The combination of specific soft, acidic water for the type population, the need for a well-matched pair, and the species' overall rarity in the hobby means documented captive spawnings are few. Where they have succeeded, conditions mirroring warm, soft, slightly acidic water and a calm, spacious tank with flat spawning surfaces have been the key.

In the aquarium

The black-spot cichlid is an uncommon fish in the hobby — collected mostly as wild imports, often seasonally after the Colombian rains, and rarely available as tank-raised stock. It is a fish for the dedicated New-World cichlid keeper rather than a community-tank staple. For an adult or a pair, a tank of at least 120–130 US gal (roughly 120 US gallons; a 75-gallon footprint suits a single growing fish) gives the room needed to manage its digging and its territorial moods. The substrate should be sand or fine gravel, deep enough to satisfy a compulsive excavator; expect the décor — rockwork, driftwood, any rooted plants — to be rearranged, so anchor hardscape firmly and favour tough or potted plants. Robust mechanical and biological filtration with moderate, not torrential, flow matches the slow forest rivers it comes from, and regular water changes keep nitrate low.

Water conditions are best aimed at the warm tropical band the species occupies: about 77–86 °F, with pH and hardness chosen to match the source population. Wild Atrato fish come from very soft, acidic blackwater (pH 5.5-6.0) and breeding attempts with that lineage are reported to go better in soft, slightly acidic water; the species is nonetheless tolerant in maintenance across a near-neutral range (pH up to ~7.5) and Panamanian-origin fish handle harder, more alkaline water. Diet is straightforward: a varied menu of quality sinking pellets, frozen and live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, small crustaceans and chopped meaty items) keeps the fish in good condition.

The critical husbandry point is social. Black-spot cichlids are relatively peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates for a festae-group fish, but mature males are intolerant of one another, and breeding pairs become territorial. The practical approach is to grow out a group of five or more in a large tank, allow a pair to form, and then be prepared to separate the pair or remove surplus fish — in a community setting fry essentially never survive. Suitable companions are similarly sized, even-tempered South or Central American cichlids and sturdy mid-water fish; avoid both fin-nippers and the most belligerent large cichlids. Realistically, this is a moderately demanding fish: hardy once settled, but with a genuine spawning challenge and limited availability that put it squarely in specialist territory.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mesoheros atromaculatus as Least Concern (assessed 12 August 2019 by T.J. Lyons, published 2020), reflecting a reasonably wide distribution across the Chocó-Darién of Colombia and eastern Panama; the population trend is listed as unknown and the species carries no CITES listing. The assessment does, however, document several habitat pressures across that range — mining and quarrying, logging and wood harvesting, and industrial, military, agricultural and forestry effluents — all of which bear on the Chocó's rivers. The Atrato and San Juan basins in particular have been heavily affected by alluvial gold mining and the mercury contamination that accompanies it, alongside deforestation in one of the planet's most biodiverse and rain-soaked regions. None of these is presently identified as a population-level threat to this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which its status should be read; as a moderately widespread habitat generalist it is far less exposed than the many narrow-range endemics of the same drainages.
