Taxonomy & naming
Mesoheros festae was first described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899, based on syntypes collected from the Río Guayas near Guayaquil, Ecuador, during the zoological expedition of Italian naturalist Enrico Festa. Boulenger placed it in the broad, heterogeneous genus Heros — then a receptacle for almost any large, laterally compressed Neotropical cichlid — under the name Heros festae. It spent most of the twentieth century housed in the sprawling, now-dismantled Cichlasoma as Cichlasoma festae (the combination used by Kullander in Reis et al. 2003 and appearing on FishBase), and was also briefly accommodated in Nandopsis by Burgess (2000).
Its modern generic home was established by McMahan and Chakrabarty (2015) in their revision of the herichthyin cichlids (tribe Heroini), Zootaxa 3999(2): 211–234, which erected the genus Mesoheros to house three South American species phylogenetically nested within an otherwise Middle American radiation. Mesoheros festae is the type species of the genus. The authority parentheses — '(Boulenger, 1899)' — mark the move out of Heros, the original genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer/CAS) is the name authority followed here.
Morphology
This is a large, robust cichlid. Wild males in good condition can reach 15.5–19.5 in in total length, though most field records fall under 14 in; females are substantially smaller, typically 10–12.5 in. Both sexes are deep-bodied and powerful, with a large mouth suited to seizing substantial prey.
The most striking feature of this species is its sexual dimorphism in colour — a near-reversal of the pattern seen in most large cichlids. Adult females are the more brilliantly coloured sex: the body is intense, flame-red to orange-red, overlaid with a series of bold black vertical bars (typically 7–8) and scattered iridescent blue-green spots and spangling on the flanks and unpaired fins. The effect is spectacular and unmistakable. Adult males lose much of this vivid red as they age, taking on a more subdued olive-green to turquoise ground colour with orange-tinged fins; they also develop a pronounced nuchal hump by the third or fourth year, and grow considerably larger than females. Juveniles of both sexes are banded similarly — silver-grey with dark bars — and the brilliant female coloration emerges progressively at sexual maturity. The caudal fin is rounded to slightly truncate; dorsal and anal fins are long and pointed in adults.
Habitat
Mesoheros festae is a fish of the Pacific-slope river systems of western South America, from the Río Esmeraldas drainage in northern Ecuador south through the Río Guayas basin — the largest Pacific-draining river system in South America — and into the Río Tumbes in extreme northern Peru. This is a narrow coastal corridor of tropical lowland rivers that drain the western Andes and empty into the Pacific, a region biogeographically distinct from the Amazon basin to the east.
These rivers are characterised by a pronounced seasonal regime: warm, often turbid spates during the wet season (roughly December–May) alternate with lower, clearer flows in the dry months. The species inhabits a range of microhabitats within this system — the edges and riffles of medium to large rivers, tributaries, and their floodplains — sheltering beneath undercut banks, overhanging vegetation, and large woody debris. Substrate varies from gravel and cobble in higher-gradient reaches to sand and leaf-litter in lowland stretches. The fish is also economically significant locally: it is known as 'vieja roja' (red old fish) in Guayas and Los Ríos provinces, where it is taken as a food fish and in the ornamental trade.
Feeding
In the wild Mesoheros festae is an opportunistic omnivore with a strong carnivorous bias. Primary prey documented from field work (Laaz et al. 2009) includes benthic crustaceans — particularly freshwater shrimps and prawns — and fish; the species is a capable and active predator. It also takes aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial invertebrates that fall into the water, and, during seasonal flood periods when fruits and seeds enter the river from inundated forest margins, plant material.
In the aquarium this versatility translates into an undemanding feeder. Large-format cichlid pellets form a practical staple; these should be supplemented with meaty foods — earthworms, river prawns, mussel, krill, and whole small fish — to maintain peak colouration and condition, particularly in females. Avoid an exclusively feeder-fish diet, which is nutritionally imbalanced and a vector for disease. The species' large mouth and powerful jaw mean it should not be offered prey items it cannot swallow whole.
Mating
Mesoheros festae forms prolonged pair bonds and is a classic biparental substrate-spawning cichlid. Courtship is a protracted and physically demanding affair: prospective partners engage in extended parallel displays, jaw-locking bouts, and mutual assessment over days or weeks before a stable pair is established. The process can be dangerous — males are significantly larger than females and will pursue them relentlessly during early pairing attempts, with serious injury or death of the female possible if the tank is too small or the female has nowhere to retreat.
Experienced keepers condition would-be pairs in adjacent compartments of a large aquarium or introduce them gradually with a transparent divider, allowing courtship displays without physical contact until clear mutual acceptance is established. Once bonded, however, pairs cooperate intensely and the male's aggression shifts from the female to external threats. The pair jointly selects and excavates a spawning site — typically a large, flat stone or an excavated cavity in the substrate — and defend a substantial territory around it with unwavering ferocity toward tankmates of any size.
Breeding
Spawning takes place on a cleaned flat surface — a stone, root face, or a pit scooped in sand — that both partners prepare. The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs, which field data suggest can number up to 3,000 in large, well-conditioned individuals, though typical aquarium clutches are smaller. The male fertilises the batch immediately after laying.
Both parents share incubation duties: the female fans and mouths the eggs; the male patrols and defends the territory perimeter. Incubation at 81–82 °F runs approximately 3–4 days to hatching. The parents move the wrigglers to pits and guard them closely; the larvae become free-swimming 5–7 days post-hatch. The free-swimming fry are shepherded as a dense school under constant parental supervision. Pair bonds in this species are reported to be durable across multiple spawning events. Both parents can be savagely aggressive toward anything entering their territory during brood care — this includes the aquarist's hand, and tankmates substantially larger than themselves.
In the aquarium
The Red Terror is a fish for serious cichlid keepers. Its size alone — males to 40+ cm total length, females to 12 in — demands a substantial aquarium: 210 US gal is a practical working minimum for a breeding pair, and a larger footprint improves management of their formidable territorial aggression. The tank must be heavily filtered (these are messy, heavy-feeding fish) and equipped with a moderate current; water changes of 30–40% weekly are advisable.
Water chemistry is relatively flexible: temperatures of 77–84 °F, pH 6.5–8.0, and moderately soft to moderately hard water (5–18 °dH) are all tolerated. Décor should include large stones, robust driftwood, and some areas of open sand substrate for digging; delicate plants will not survive. Tankmates are a challenge — few fish can coexist safely with a breeding pair of Mesoheros festae, and the safest approach is a dedicated species tank for the pair. If a mixed community is attempted, only large, robust species of comparable size and temperament are candidates, and substantial space with multiple sight-breaks is non-negotiable.
Acquiring a genuine pair rather than two males (which often resemble each other outside breeding colour) is the first hurdle; raising a group of juveniles and allowing natural pairing is the most reliable route. The Red Terror is a long-lived fish — records of 12–15 years in captivity are reported — and a pair in peak condition, particularly a breeding female in full colour, is among the most visually arresting displays possible in a freshwater aquarium.
Conservation
Mesoheros festae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its status is listed as Not Evaluated on FishBase (2025). This is not an endorsement of security: several Ecuadorian ichthyologists have noted anecdotal declines in abundance in recent decades, attributed to a combination of over-collection for the ornamental trade, artisanal food-fishing pressure (the fish is prized locally as 'vieja roja'), and ongoing degradation of Pacific-slope river systems through deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water extraction.
The species' range is geographically restricted to the coastal Pacific drainages of Ecuador and northern Peru — a relatively narrow corridor that does not afford the distributional buffer available to more widespread Amazonian cichlids. Ecuador's Pacific-slope freshwater ichthyofauna has been described as a biodiversity hotspot with high endemism and significant threats from land-use change; the formal conservation assessment that Mesoheros festae deserves is overdue. Its popularity in the international aquarium trade means that a captive population is well established, though captive-bred individuals rarely substitute for the conservation of healthy wild populations.
