Taxonomy & naming
Nannacara anomala was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1905, in his revision of the South-American cichlid genera Acara, Nannacara, Acaropsis and Astronotus. Regan erected the genus Nannacara in the same work and fixed anomala as its type by monotypy — so the species and the genus name were born together, and anomala has anchored Nannacara ever since. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the genus as feminine and lists it as valid in Cichlidae: Cichlinae; a later use of the name by Miranda-Ribeiro (1918) is sometimes wrongly cited as an original description but is merely a subsequent usage. The species was redescribed by Sven O. Kullander and Han Nijssen in their 1989 monograph on the cichlids of Surinam, the standard modern treatment, and again in Kullander's 2003 checklist of South- and Central-American freshwater fishes. Within the family it sits among the cichlasomatine dwarf cichlids; FishBase places it in subfamily Cichlasomatinae while the Catalog of Fishes assigns the genus broadly to Cichlinae. Nannacara has long been a taxonomic catch-all for small Guianan acaras, and several fishes once filed under it — most notably the inland 'Ivanacara' species adoketa and bimaculata — have since been split off into their own genus by Römer and Hahn (2006), leaving the true Nannacara as a tighter group of coastal dwarfs of which anomala is the flagship.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small cichlid, and one with pronounced sexual size difference. FishBase and Kullander (2003) give the male a maximum of about 2 in standard length; the female is distinctly smaller, frequently only around 1.5 in. The body is a typical short, fairly deep acara shape. Colour is where the sexes part company. A dominant male is the 'golden dwarf' of the trade name: a warm brassy-gold to olive ground overlaid with rows of glittering metallic blue-green and turquoise scales, often most intense on the head and along the flanks, with red-orange and blue iridescence flooding the unpaired fins; the dorsal and anal fins draw out into pointed, trailing tips in fully mature males. The female is a plainer lemon-to-tan yellow with a single dark stripe running along the lateral line. That muted dress is deceptive, because the female carries a second, dramatic colour state: when she comes into spawning condition she switches almost instantly into a bold black-and-cream checkerboard 'brooding dress' — a grid of dark blotches over a pale ground — that she wears while guarding eggs and fry and that signals her aggressive readiness to defend them. Juveniles of both sexes look alike and resemble adult females, and a subordinate male will often masquerade in female colour and size to avoid the dominant male's attacks. Sexing is therefore reliable only in mature fish, by the male's larger size, drawn-out fins and iridescence versus the female's lateral stripe and checkerboard.
Habitat
Nannacara anomala is a fish of the coastal lowlands of the Guianas. Its well-documented core range runs from the Aruka River in Guyana eastward to the lower Marowijne (Marowijne/Maroni) River on the Suriname–French Guiana border, and it is most characteristically found in flooded savanna and grassland of the low-lying coastal zone rather than in the rivers themselves. The IUCN assessment extends the recorded range somewhat further, also listing French Guiana, far-northern Brazil and eastern Colombia, but the bulk of reliable records are the Guyanese and Surinamese coastal swamps. These are shallow, warm, often weedy waters — seasonally inundated grassland, ditches, marsh margins and small pools — where the fish lives close to the bottom among leaf litter, roots and submerged vegetation. In keeping with that biotope it is a shallow-water species; depth in its flooded-grassland haunts is typically well under a metre, and FishBase records it from the upper sunlit layer rather than from any deep channel. Published water chemistry for the species spans a wide tolerance: FishBase gives roughly pH 6.0–8.0 and 5–19 dH, while the soft, slightly acidic, mineral-poor conditions of coastal blackwater and savanna pools (toward the lower end of that range) are most typical of the wild habitat. Temperatures in these tropical lowland waters are warm and fairly stable.
Feeding
The golden dwarf cichlid is a benthic micropredator. FishBase puts its trophic level near 3.3 and records a wild diet of worms, crustaceans and insects; in practice it works the bottom and the lower water column, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — from among leaf litter, sediment and plant stems. It is not a specialised sand-sifter like the eartheaters, but a general small-prey forager well suited to the invertebrate-rich shallows it inhabits. In its flooded-grassland community it occupies the role of a small predator on aquatic invertebrates, itself prey to larger fishes and to birds — a vulnerability that, in behavioural studies, has been shown to shape how boldly it fights and forages.
Mating
Social structure in Nannacara anomala is organised around male dominance and female territory. Where several males occur together they form a hierarchy with a single alpha and a number of subordinate beta males; the dominant male is larger, more colourful, and shows the metallic blue head and flanks, while subordinates may suppress their colour and pose as females to avoid attack. This species has in fact become a model in animal-behaviour research: Brick's 1998 study in Animal Behaviour used Nannacara anomala to show that an individual's fighting behaviour and vigilance are tuned to predation risk, males moderating their aggression when exposed. Pair formation is driven by the female. A ripe female establishes and defends a patch of the bottom — a 'sub-territory' on the order of 40 by 15.5 in — and it is she who solicits and accepts a male. Courtship is brief and the bond is loose and female-centred rather than a co-equal partnership: the male's role narrows sharply once eggs are laid, and the female can turn on him with real violence. That switch from courtship to aggression — the female driving the male off as she takes the brood — is the defining feature of mating in this genus.
Breeding
Nannacara anomala is a maternal substrate- and cave-spawning cichlid, and it is famously easy to breed — one of the classic 'first cichlids' for a hobbyist learning to raise fry. The female cleans a surface — a flat stone, a leaf, the wall or roof of a small cave, an upturned pot or a coconut shell — and lays her eggs on it, with reported clutches of up to about 300 eggs. From that moment care is overwhelmingly hers. She tends and fans the eggs in her black-and-cream brooding dress while the male is relegated to the territory's edge or driven away entirely; in the close confines of a tank a male that cannot retreat is sometimes killed. At about 79 °F the eggs hatch in roughly three to four days. Newly hatched larvae are tiny (around 0.5 in total length) and equipped with adhesive head glands that fasten them to the substrate and keep currents from scattering them while the mother guards them — a detail documented in the laboratory rearing study of Kupren and colleagues (2014), who tracked development from hatching to metamorphosis at about 18 days. The larvae become free-swimming and begin feeding around three to four days after hatching, once the swim bladder inflates and the mouth opens, and the female then leads the mobile fry as a tight school, herding them with body language much as Apistogramma females do and snapping back any straggler. Maternal defence is intense and prolonged; the female will see off fish many times her size. Spawns can follow one another quickly, and in a roomy tank a single male can fertilise the clutches of several females holding adjacent territories.
In the aquarium
Few cichlids are better suited to a beginner than Nannacara anomala, and it has been a trade staple for over a century — among the earliest South-American dwarf cichlids imported, reportedly reaching the United States from near Georgetown, Guyana. It is small, hardy, inexpensive, undemanding about water chemistry, and it breeds readily, which makes it an ideal fish for someone wanting to watch cichlid brood care for the first time. A single pair can be kept and bred in a tank as small as about 17.5 in long, though more space is better and is essential if more than one male is present.
Water chemistry is forgiving. The species does well anywhere from soft and acidic to moderately hard and slightly alkaline: a practical range is pH about 6.0–7.5 and soft-to-moderate hardness, with the soft, slightly acidic end favoured for the best colour and the most reliable spawning. Reported temperatures vary — FishBase lists a fairly cool 72–77 °F, while much hobby experience and many breeders keep them warmer, around 75–81 °F — so a setting in the mid-20s suits both maintenance and breeding. A mature, stable tank with gentle filtration and modest flow suits a fish of calm, weedy shallows; strong current is unnatural and unnecessary.
The layout should mimic its biotope: a soft or fine substrate, plenty of planting, and scattered wood, roots and leaf litter to break up sightlines. Crucially, provide deliberate spawning caves — an upturned flowerpot with a chipped entrance, a coconut shell, or a snug rock overhang — and ideally several, so that in a group each female can claim a defensible nook. Diet is simple: the fish is an opportunistic micropredator that takes quality dry foods (a small cichlid pellet or flake) readily, but it shows its best condition and colour on regular live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, with some vegetable matter rounding out the menu.
On compatibility, this is a peaceful dwarf for most of its life and can share a community with other calm, similarly sized fishes. The one large caveat is breeding: a guarding female becomes extraordinarily aggressive for her size and will harass tankmates and her own mate relentlessly around the brood. The most common mistakes keepers make are giving a pair too little floor space (so the male cannot escape a spawning female and is injured or killed), keeping two settled males in a tank shorter than about 47 in, and being surprised when a placid 'community dwarf' suddenly clears a wide territory once eggs appear. Plan the floor plan around females' sub-territories and provide retreats, and the species is close to trouble-free.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Nannacara anomala as Least Concern (published 2023; assessors Lasso-Alcalá, Quintero-T., Mikolji and Martínez), with a population trend reported as stable. The assessment cites a relatively wide distribution across the coastal Guianas and adjacent areas and notes no major range-wide threats. The species carries no CITES listing. Although it is collected for the ornamental trade and is one of the more popular dwarf cichlids, almost all aquarium stock is now commercially captive-bred — mass-produced on farms in eastern Europe and the Far East — so trade pressure on wild populations is slight. The general risks to its habitat are the familiar ones facing coastal-lowland wetlands in the Guianas: drainage and conversion of flooded grassland, agriculture and pollution, and localised habitat loss. None of these is documented as a present threat to the species as a whole, and as a hardy, widespread generalist of shallow swamp habitats it is far less exposed than the many narrow-range endemics of the region.
