Orthochromis kasuluensis is a small rheophilic haplochromine cichlid described in 1998 from the upper Ruchugi drainage of the Malagarasi basin in western Tanzania, near the town of Kasulu. It is a fish of slow-to-moderate, vegetated river water within a famously rapids-rich basin, not a lake species. The Malagarasi is an ancient river that drains to Lake Tanganyika but is largely cut off from it by rapids, and its rheophilic Orthochromis are among that system's signature endemics.

Taxonomy & naming

Orthochromis kasuluensis was described in 1998 by Luc De Vos and Lothar Seegers, in their revision describing seven new Orthochromis species from the Malagarasi, Luiche and Rugufu basins of the Lake Tanganyika drainage, a paper that did much to clarify the rheophilic haplochromines of the region and that also reassigned several earlier-named species to Orthochromis. The genus Orthochromis was erected by Greenwood in 1954 — its type species, Orthochromis malagaraziensis, comes from this very basin — for small, current-loving haplochromine cichlids of African river rapids; the name combines Greek 'orthos' (straight) and 'chromis' (a cichlid), for the straight body profile of these stream fishes. As now used the genus is a loose assemblage of rheophilic lineages spread across the Malagarasi and neighbouring Tanganyika-region rivers and the upper Congo systems rather than a single tight clade. The specific epithet is a toponym, formed from the town of Kasulu — near which the type series was collected — with the Latin suffix '-ensis' ('belonging to').

Morphology

Orthochromis kasuluensis is a small cichlid, reaching about 3 in standard length according to FishBase. It has the genus's rheophilic build — an elongate, low and only moderately compressed body with the straight dorsal profile that names the genus — suited to a life among the substrate in flowing water. Like the other Malagarasi-basin Orthochromis it shows the muted brown-grey ground colour and darker vertical flank bars typical of stream haplochromines. De Vos and Seegers separated the seven species they treated on combinations of meristic counts, squamation and colour-pattern details; kasuluensis is distinguished within that set by its particular suite of such characters. Detailed accounts of sexual dimorphism are limited, though as in related Orthochromis breeding males are expected to show stronger colour and pattern than females.

Habitat

The species is known only from the upper Ruchugi (Ruchugu) drainage near Kasulu, in the Malagarasi basin of western Tanzania, with type material from the Mgandazi River and the Ruchugi itself (around 4°34′S, 30°06′E). Within the wider Malagarasi — a basin celebrated for its rapids and for a rheophilic cichlid fauna largely isolated from Lake Tanganyika by waterfalls — kasuluensis occupies the gentler end of that spectrum: it was found in slow-running water, and in the Mgandazi it occurred in stretches bordered by dense vegetation. So while it is a member of a rheophilic genus and basin, this particular species favours slower, plant-fringed reaches rather than the most turbulent rapids. Its known range is small, confined to this upper Ruchugi headwater area.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Orthochromis kasuluensis. By the ecology of the genus it is best read as a small benthic invertivore-grazer, taking aufwuchs — the algal-and-microinvertebrate film on submerged surfaces — together with aquatic insect larvae and other small bottom invertebrates. Its preference for slower, well-vegetated water suggests it can also glean small invertebrates from plants and soft substrate as well as from rock, a slightly broader foraging setting than the most rapids-bound members of the genus. Any finer account of its diet remains to be documented and is here inferred from its relatives and habitat.

Mating

Courtship has not been described in detail for kasuluensis, but the rheophilic Orthochromis are maternal mouthbrooders, and the reproductive biology notes in the De Vos and Seegers revision place the Malagarasi-basin species firmly in that mode. A male holds and defends a small territory, displays to females, and leads a receptive female over a chosen site; the female takes the eggs into her mouth, where fertilisation is completed and incubation begins. In its slower, vegetated reaches a male's territory is presumably anchored to structure such as stones or plant cover. The fine details of pairing and display for this particular species are inferred from the genus rather than separately documented.

Breeding

There is no detailed published account of clutch size or fry development specific to Orthochromis kasuluensis, but the species is a maternal mouthbrooder like its Malagarasi-basin congeners, whose reproductive biology was a focus of the 1998 revision. The female incubates the fertilised eggs and then the larvae in her buccal cavity for some weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, which may dart back into her mouth when threatened, with no paternal care. In a small river haplochromine of this size, broods are modest — on the order of tens of relatively large eggs — the small clutch offset by the protection oral incubation provides. The specific brood size and timing for kasuluensis are extrapolated from the genus rather than recorded.

In the aquarium

Orthochromis kasuluensis is not established in the aquarium hobby. It is a small, range-restricted endemic of a western Tanzanian river system and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade; the Malagarasi Orthochromis as a group are kept only occasionally by specialists.

Any husbandry notes are extrapolated from the genus and the species' habitat. Compared with the most rapids-bound Orthochromis, kasuluensis comes from slower, vegetated water, so it would likely tolerate — and may prefer — a setup with strong but not extreme flow, planted margins and structure rather than a pure torrent tank; it still needs the clean, hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated water typical of the genus, with vigorous filtration and regular water changes. It is a small, busy, substrate-oriented fish best kept as a group in a species setup or with other robust, similarly-adapted fishes rather than in a soft-water community. Realistically this is a fish for the dedicated rheophile-cichlid keeper and one most people will meet only in the literature.

Conservation

Orthochromis kasuluensis has been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and is listed as Least Concern. That assessment reflects that the species, while range-restricted to the upper Ruchugi area of the Malagarasi basin, is not currently considered to face severe or imminent threats across that range. Even so, a narrowly distributed headwater endemic of this kind remains inherently sensitive to local pressures — agricultural expansion, sedimentation, water abstraction and the loss of the marginal vegetation it favours — and the broader Malagarasi system faces development and land-use pressures over the long term. The basin's rheophilic Orthochromis are a distinctive radiation tied to flowing water, and continued monitoring of the smaller-ranged species is sensible even where the current Red List category is reassuring. No CITES listing or significant fishery interest applies.
