Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the prolific Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902 as Tilapia stormsi, in the second of his "Contributions to the ichthyology of the Congo" — a short paper reporting on a collection of fishes from the Lindi River, a middle-Congo tributary near Kisangani. The type locality is the Lindi River, Democratic Republic of the Congo; the lectotype (BMNH 1902.4.14.13, originally from the Brussels museum's material) was fixed by Greenwood & Kullander in their 1994 revision, with four paralectotypes held at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The name has had an unusually mobile generic history. For much of the twentieth century it was treated as a Tilapia, and van Oijen and colleagues (1991) even sank it as a synonym of Haplochromis polyacanthus. Greenwood & Kullander's 1994 taxonomic review of "Tilapia" polyacanthus and "T." stormsi — which also erected two new Schwetzochromis from the Upper Zaire drainage — reinstated stormsi as a distinct species and placed it in the genus Schwetzochromis. De Vos & Seegers (1998) then transferred it to Orthochromis, the combination that has held ever since and is followed by Kullander & Roberts (2012) and by Schedel and colleagues (2014, 2018). The genus Orthochromis, erected by Greenwood in 1954, is a loose assemblage of small African rheophilic cichlids of the haplochromine line, scattered across the Congo, Malagarasi and Lufubu rapids; molecular work (notably Schedel et al. 2018) has shown the genus as currently constituted to be polyphyletic — a holding-pen for superficially similar rapids fishes rather than a true natural lineage — so stormsi's placement is best read as provisional pending a fuller revision.
Morphology
Orthochromis stormsi is a small fish: FishBase gives a maximum of about 4 in total length, and aquarium reports of trade specimens cluster around 4–4.5 in, with females running somewhat smaller than males. The body is the elongate, low-slung, almost cylindrical form typical of current-dwelling cichlids, built to lie close to the substrate and slip between rocks rather than to manoeuvre in open water — hobbyists routinely describe these fish as "goby-like." The fins reflect that life: the dorsal is long-based and carries a high spine count (16 to 21 dorsal spines over 9 soft rays), the anal bears 3 spines and 6 to 8 soft rays, and there are 27 to 30 vertebrae. As in other rheophilic Orthochromis, the swim bladder is reduced, which keeps the fish negatively buoyant and helps it hold position on the bottom in turbulent flow. Coloration is fairly understated and shifts with mood and sex; males show more colour and pattern, while females tend to a darker, plainer ground. Sexual dimorphism is otherwise weak, and ripe females are most reliably told by the swelling of the throat when carrying a brood.
Habitat
This is a fish of moving water. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic and explicitly rheophilic, and every recorded locality is a rapids or cataract reach rather than still water. Its known range is a string of such sites across the Democratic Republic of the Congo: the rapids at the downstream exit of Pool Malebo on the lower Congo, the Lindi River and the Wagenia (Boyoma) Falls in the middle-Congo basin near Kisangani, and farther upstream the Lualaba drainage and Lake Mweru. These waters fall within three of the Congo basin's freshwater ecoregions — the Lower Congo Rapids below Malebo Pool, the Upper Congo Rapids around the Boyoma cataracts at Kisangani, and the Upper Congo of the Lualaba and Mweru system. In all of them the species occupies the same structural niche: current-swept rocky bottoms, where narrow crevices and the lee of boulders offer shelter from the full force of the flow. As fast-flowing tropical river habitat, these reaches are warm, well-oxygenated and comparatively well-mineralised by rainforest-river standards; FishBase records a tropical thermal preference of roughly 77–79 °F. No detailed in-situ chemistry has been published specifically for stormsi, but its rapids habitat implies warm, soft-to-moderately-mineralised, near-neutral and oxygen-rich water rather than the very acidic blackwater of the forest interior.
Feeding
Orthochromis stormsi is fundamentally a grazer of the rock biofilm. FishBase summarises its diet as mainly algae and aufwuchs — the dense felt of diatoms, filamentous algae and the small invertebrates living within it that coats current-washed stones — with animal matter only rarely taken. That places it among the aufwuchs-scraping rheophilic cichlids that exploit the rich, constantly renewed algal mat of well-lit, fast-flowing rapids, a food source kept clean and productive by the very current the fish is built to withstand. In captivity this translates into a fish that picks more or less continuously at surfaces, and one that does well on a vegetable-leaning diet (spirulina-based flakes and pellets, blanched greens) rounded out with occasional small live or frozen foods, rather than on a heavily protein-rich regime.
Mating
Detailed field observations of courtship in this species have not been published, but its reproductive biology is documented in broad strokes and is consistent across the rheophilic Orthochromis. FishBase records the species as polygamous and ovophilic — that is, males mate with multiple females and the eggs are fertilised in the mouthbrooding sequence typical of haplochromine-line cichlids. In aquaria the fish are notably pugnacious for their size: keepers describe an almost restless social life in which individuals chase and spar with conspecifics more or less constantly, settling briefly on a rock before resuming the harassment of their neighbours. Because of that high baseline aggression the recommendation from those who have kept them is to hold them in a group rather than a single pair, so that aggression is spread across many fish rather than concentrated on one target. Spawning itself follows the maternal-mouthbrooder pattern: a male holds and defends a small patch of rocky bottom and courts ripe females onto it.
Breeding
Orthochromis stormsi is a maternal mouthbrooder. After a female deposits her eggs and takes them up, she carries and incubates the developing clutch in her buccal cavity, releasing free-swimming fry only once they are well developed; the male provides no parental care beyond fertilisation. Clutch sizes have not been formally reported for this species, but as a small mouthbrooding rheophilic haplochromine it can be expected to produce modest broods on the order of a few dozen eggs, in line with similarly sized congeners — fecundity in these small rapids cichlids is low compared with the open-water lake haplochromines. The species has been bred in aquaria: trade accounts note that, given clean, oxygen-rich water and a group of fish, a brooding ("chewing") female will eventually appear and a new generation can be raised without special intervention. The combination of small brood size, full maternal care, and a habitat that buffers the young in rock crevices is the rheophilic mouthbrooder's answer to life in fast water.
In the aquarium
Orthochromis stormsi reaches the hobby only sporadically, often as bycatch alongside better-known Congo rapids cichlids such as the lionhead Steatocranus, and it is a fish for a keeper who appreciates behaviour over colour rather than a showpiece. The central requirement is the one its habitat dictates: clean, highly oxygenated, moving water. A tank with strong filtration and brisk circulation — powerheads or a generously sized canister returning a real current — suits it far better than the calm, planted aquarium most cichlids tolerate, and skimping on flow and oxygen is the most likely way to fail with the species.
The second requirement follows from its temperament. These are small but genuinely scrappy fish that pester one another relentlessly, and the proven approach is to keep them as a group rather than as a pair so the aggression is diluted; a single subordinate fish in a small tank tends to be bullied without respite. A common trade recommendation is roughly ten fish in a 200-litre (about 50-gallon) tank, with the bottom broken up by stones, cobbles and rockwork to create the crevices and broken sightlines they would use in the wild. A sand or fine-gravel base with plenty of rounded rock mimics the rapids floor; rooted plants are largely irrelevant to a fish of scoured cataracts.
Water chemistry is undemanding within reason — warm (around 75–82 °F), near-neutral, soft to moderately hard — provided it is kept clean and oxygen-rich; nitrogenous waste and stagnant water are far more dangerous to this species than any particular pH or hardness figure. Feed a diet weighted toward algae and vegetable matter (spirulina foods, blanched greens) with occasional small frozen or live foods. Tankmates are best limited to other robust, current-loving Congo fishes that can hold their own; slow or long-finned community fish are a poor match for its temperament. It is not a beginner's fish so much as a specialist's one: straightforward to keep alive once the water is moving and oxygenated, but easy to disappoint if treated like a generic peaceful cichlid.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Orthochromis stormsi as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants, Central Africa freshwater assessment). The rationale is its wide distribution across multiple, widely separated reaches of the Congo basin and the absence of any identified major threat acting across that range; the population trend was recorded as unknown. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is of no fishery significance. As a rapids specialist its principal long-term vulnerability is the same one that hangs over the Congo's whole rheophilic fauna: hydropower development and other modifications of cataract reaches, which can eliminate the specific fast-water habitat these fish depend on at a stroke and which fall hardest on narrowly distributed species. For stormsi, the breadth of its recorded range across several ecoregions is a buffer against that risk, and at present no population-level decline is documented.
