Parananochromis brevirostris is a tiny, secretive cichlid of the shaded forest streams of Gabon and the borderlands of southern Cameroon. Barely five centimetres long, it belongs to a small West-Central African radiation of chromidotilapiine dwarfs that hide among drifting leaf litter and spawn out of sight in dark crevices. Named for its short, rounded snout, it is rarely seen and even more rarely bred — and the keepers who have managed it describe a fierce little fish whose offspring sex ratio seems to hinge on the acidity and chill of the water its eggs incubate in.

Taxonomy & naming

Parananochromis brevirostris was described in 2003 by the Austrian cichlid specialist Anton Lamboj and the American ichthyologist Melanie L. J. Stiassny of the American Museum of Natural History, in a Zootaxa paper that simultaneously named three new members of the genus — Parananochromis axelrodi, Parananochromis brevirostris and Parananochromis ornatus — from Gabon and Cameroon. The holotype (AMNH 232536) was collected from a small, shallow creek about 200 metres downstream of the IRET research station in the Ivindo system of eastern Gabon, at roughly 00°30'34"N, 12°48'33"E; a large paratype series is split between the AMNH, the Natural History Museum in London, Cornell, Geneva, the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren, and Vienna. The genus Parananochromis itself was erected by Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1987 in his phylogenetic review of the pelmatochromine cichlids, with Pelmatochromis longirostris Boulenger, 1903 as its type species; the name signals Greenwood's view that the group is the presumed near-sister of the dwarf Congo genus Nanochromis. Parananochromis sits within the tribe Chromidotilapiini of the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, a lineage of small West and Central African riverine cichlids that also includes Chromidotilapia, Pelvicachromis, Benitochromis and Divandu. As currently constituted the genus holds nine species, several added after 2003 (Parananochromis elobatus and P. orsorum by Lamboj in 2014, P. moutingae in 2022). Material once reported as Parananochromis brevirostris from the Ntem River has since been recognised as the later-described Parananochromis elobatus, so the species' confirmed range is narrower than early checklists imply.

Morphology

This is one of the smallest cichlids in an already small genus. The original description gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length for males and unsexed fish and only 1.5 in SL for females, so even a mature adult is a slender, finger-length fish. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, and the diagnostic feature that gives the species its name is the head: the snout is conspicuously short and rounded, blunter than in the long-snouted congeners Parananochromis longirostris and Parananochromis gabonicus. Fin counts run to 14–16 dorsal spines and 8–10 dorsal soft rays, with three anal spines and 6–8 anal soft rays, and the dorsal carries well-developed lappets between the spine tips. Internally the description notes a lachrymal plus three tubular infraorbital bones, a naked or single-scale-row cheek, a naked anterior chest, and a weakly developed or absent "pharyngeal hanging pad" on the roof of the pharynx — the kind of skeletal minutiae that separate the Parananochromis species from one another. Coloration is understated, as befits a leaf-litter fish: a brownish to olive ground broken by darker markings, brightening in breeding condition. The species shows some sexual dichromatism and the usual chromidotilapiine pattern in which ripe females develop a flushed pink or reddish belly; males grow distinctly larger than the diminutive females.

Habitat

Parananochromis brevirostris is a Lower Guinea endemic, restricted to the rainforest drainages of Gabon and the immediately adjacent corner of south-eastern Cameroon. FishBase maps it to the Ivindo and Ogowe (Ogooué) systems of Gabon, with confirmed records scattered from the Ivindo in the east to the Ogooué near Ndjolé in the west; all of this falls within the Ogowe–Nyanga–Kouilou–Niari freshwater ecoregion, one of the most species-rich freshwater regions in Africa. It is a fish of small, shaded forest creeks and streams rather than open river. The most detailed in-situ account comes from the aquarist Ted Judy, who collected the species in 2011 in the Menguegne, a northern tributary of the Ogooué west of Ndjolé. There the stream alternated between shallow riffles and pools approaching a metre deep, its bed sandy but blanketed with thick mats of leaf litter; the fish were tightly bound to those leaf beds, where they could be seined in numbers and of every age class. Water at that site was soft, warm and gently acidic — pH about 6.5, conductivity around 35 µS/cm, carbonate and general hardness effectively nil, and a temperature near 79 °F (79 °F). Congeners from comparable Gabonese streams turn up in water as acidic as pH 4 and as cool as 73 °F, so the genus as a whole occupies very soft, often deeply tannin-stained blackwater. The species shares these streams with larger chromidotilapiines such as Chromidotilapia regani and Chromidotilapia kingsleyae, partitioning the habitat by size and microhabitat.

Feeding

Like its relatives, Parananochromis brevirostris is a small benthic generalist. The Cichlid Room Companion characterises the genus as detritivorous and insectivorous, and FishBase places this species at a trophic level of about 3.2 — squarely in the small-omnivore range. In the wild it works the leaf litter and soft sediment of its forest creeks, picking through drifting and settled detritus for the aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other small invertebrates that accumulate there. Its strong association with leaf beds is as much about food as about cover: the decomposing litter supports a dense community of invertebrate prey, and the fish forages within it rather than over open substrate. In aquaria it readily takes a varied omnivore's menu — live and frozen daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii and blackworms have all been used to bring breeding females into condition — confirming that it is an opportunistic micro-predator rather than any kind of dietary specialist.

Mating

Parananochromis brevirostris forms monogamous pairs, but pairing it is fraught. The species is intensely territorial and, in close quarters, lethally intolerant of its own kind. Ted Judy learned this the hard way: attempting to form a pair the way one would with other West African cichlids — by putting several of each sex together and letting them sort it out — he was reduced to a single surviving male within two days, the rival males simply having been killed. The workable approach he settled on was to house the fish as isolated single pairs in small tanks, then rotate a male between several individually kept ripe females, leaving any female that had spawned alone to tend her brood. Courtship and pair-bonding follow the chromidotilapiine template, with the female advertising readiness through her reddening, swollen abdomen and the pair jointly claiming a small territory around a chosen spawning site. The aggression that makes pairing difficult eases considerably when the fish are given space: in large, heavily decorated tanks with deep leaf litter, mixed groups of several males and females have lived together and continued to spawn without the carnage seen in cramped conditions.

Breeding

The species is a pair-bonding, biparental cave and crevice spawner — the standard chromidotilapiine mode, with no evidence that the female of this species mouthbroods (its close relative Parananochromis gabonicus does take fry into the mouth when threatened, but Parananochromis brevirostris was not observed doing so). Eggs are laid hidden inside a small-mouthed cave, and the female does the bulk of brood care while the male, only loosely attached to the task, is often driven off from the immediate vicinity of the fry. The most instructive captive account is again Ted Judy's. He found that the fish ignored bare caves until he stuffed them with long-fibre sphagnum moss, after which females spawned within a week — a strong hint that the natural nest sites lie deep beneath the streambed leaf litter, in pockets where decaying plant matter drives the local pH far below that of the flowing water above (he measured pH around 4.5 inside the moss-filled caves). The genus is notorious for badly skewed offspring sex ratios — a related congener once yielded only two males among several hundred fry — and the leading hypothesis, consistent with environmental sex determination known in nearby genera such as Pelvicachromis, is that incubation conditions decide sex. By breeding at low pH and cool temperatures (70–73 °F / 70–74 °F), Judy reported reaching a far more balanced ratio of roughly 60 percent female to 40 percent male. Sex itself becomes externally apparent late: fry he raised remained indistinguishable until about six months of age, when males and females abruptly differentiated almost overnight. A clutch size specific to this species is not published; small chromidotilapiine cave-spawners of this size typically lay on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred eggs per spawn.

In the aquarium

Parananochromis brevirostris is a rarity in the hobby, kept by a handful of West-African-cichlid specialists rather than offered routinely in the trade, and it is not a beginner's fish. Its needs are specific and its temperament unforgiving. Because adults will kill rivals in confined space, the proven approach is to keep an isolated pair in a small tank — around 20 US gallons (about 20 US gal) suffices for a single pair — or to give a small group a much larger, structurally complex aquarium where subordinates can escape. The single most important lesson from the keepers who have succeeded is not to crowd them while they sort out a hierarchy.

Water should mirror the soft, warm, acidic forest streams the fish comes from. A pH in the low-to-mid 6 range, very low hardness (GH and KH at or near zero, best achieved with reverse-osmosis water lightly reconstituted), and moderate temperature are the targets; conductivity is far less critical than the absence of calcium and magnesium. Strikingly, temperature should be kept cool by tropical-cichlid standards — Ted Judy ran his breeders at 70–73 °F (70–74 °F), cooler than most West African cichlids are kept, and unplugged the heaters entirely. This matters beyond mere comfort: cool, acidic incubation appears to be the key to avoiding the wildly male- or female-skewed broods that have repeatedly caused captive lines of Parananochromis to collapse.

The tank should be furnished to reproduce a leaf-littered forest creek: a clean sand substrate, a generous layer of boiled oak or beech leaves (a depth of several centimetres is realistic and clearly welcomed), bogwood, and small-entrance spawning caves. Caves packed with sphagnum moss are far more attractive to spawning females than bare ones, presumably because the moss recreates the acidic, detritus-lined micro-pocket of a natural nest. Lighting should be subdued, and floating plants such as Anubias or other shade-tolerant species help. Feeding is straightforward for an omnivore — a varied diet of live and frozen daphnia, Artemia and blackworms conditions the fish and brings females into spawning colour. The honest summary is that this is a fish for the dedicated specialist willing to manage aggression, run cool soft acidic water, and pay attention to the conditions inside the spawning cave; handled that way it can be maintained and bred over multiple generations, which for a fish this obscure is an achievement worth preserving.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Parananochromis brevirostris as Vulnerable (VU, criterion B2ab(iii)), in an assessment by T. Moelants dated 16 February 2009 and published in 2010; the population trend is listed as unknown. The criterion reflects a restricted and fragmented area of occupancy together with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its forest-stream habitat — the classic exposure of a small-range Lower Guinea endemic rather than any documented collapse. The species is harmless to humans, carries no CITES listing, and is of no fishery interest. The threats are habitat-driven: the forest creeks of Gabon and southern Cameroon are vulnerable to deforestation, agricultural clearing, sedimentation and the degradation of the leaf-litter and headwater systems on which this fish depends, and Judy noted that much of the surrounding countryside near his Gabonese collecting sites had already been cleared for agriculture. As a leaf-litter specialist tied to small, shaded, soft-water streams, Parananochromis brevirostris has little buffer against the loss or warming of those headwaters, which is why a wide-ranging genus member can still warrant a Vulnerable listing on the strength of its narrow distribution alone.
