Parananochromis gabonicus is a small, sharp-snouted dwarf cichlid of the tannin-stained forest streams of northern Gabon and adjacent Equatorial Guinea. A member of the chromidotilapiine lineage of West-Central Africa, it lives among drifts of submerged leaf litter in some of the softest, most acidic water any cichlid inhabits, and it spawns in caves in the manner of its kin. Its most surprising trait belongs to the mother: when danger threatens, a female will gather her free-swimming fry into her mouth and retreat into the nest, a flash of larvophile mouthbrooding in a fish otherwise classed as a plain substrate spawner.

Taxonomy & naming

Parananochromis gabonicus was first described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1975, on Gabonese material, as Nanochromis gabonicus — she placed it in the dwarf-cichlid genus Nanochromis, then a catch-all for small West and Central African cichlids. The type locality is a roadside pool between Mitzic and Médouneu in northern Gabon, in the same forested upland where aquarists still find the fish today. In 1987 Peter Humphry Greenwood erected the genus Parananochromis to hold three species he judged distinct from Nanochromis and from Pelmatochromis: the type species Parananochromis longirostris (Boulenger, 1903), together with Parananochromis caudifasciatus (Boulenger, 1913) and Trewavas's gabonicus, which thereby acquired its current binomial. The genus has since grown — Anton Lamboj and Melanie Stiassny added Parananochromis axelrodi, Parananochromis brevirostris and Parananochromis ornatus from Gabon and Cameroon in 2003, Lamboj described P. orsorum in 2014, and P. moutingae was described from the Congo Basin in 2022 — making gabonicus one of the longer-known members of a genus that is still being filled in. Parananochromis sits in the tribe Chromidotilapiini (subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae), a Lower Guinean assemblage that also contains Chromidotilapia, Pelvicachromis, Benitochromis, Thysochromis and Divandu. Greenwood and later Stiassny united the tribe on shared anatomy — a visor-like pad on the roof of the buccopharynx, tuberculate outer gill-rakers on the first arch, and absent microbranchiospines on the rear arches — and distinguished Parananochromis by, among other features, its 12 circumpeduncular scales and the configuration of its infraorbital and lateral-line canals.

Morphology

This is a genuinely small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 3 in standard length, and most fish seen in the trade are smaller, in keeping with the genus reputation for being 'very small.' The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed — depth runs roughly 27 to 36 percent of standard length — tapering to an acutely pointed snout that gives the fish its alert, foraging profile. The fin counts are typical of the genus: about 15 to 16 dorsal spines over 8 to 10 soft rays, and three anal spines over 7 to 8 soft rays. Coloration is subdued and forest-toned — olive to tan flanks over a paler belly, the whole fish warming and intensifying when a male is in breeding dress. The species is sexually dichromatic in a precise, diagnostic way: maculae (small dark spots or flecks) on the soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins are present only in males, while the same fins are immaculate in females. The diagnostic countercheck on females is equally specific — the tips of the anterior pelvic-fin rays of a mature female are jet black. Those caudal maculae, when present, tend to scatter rather than coalesce into the crisp vertical caudal bands seen in some congeners such as Parananochromis caudifasciatus, a useful field separation. Overall the dimorphism is modest in size but reliable once a keeper learns to read the fins.

Habitat

Parananochromis gabonicus is restricted to the Lower Guinean ichthyofaunal province of West-Central Africa. FishBase summarizes its range as the Woleu-Ntem drainages of north-eastern Gabon and the Okano River of the Ogooué (Ogowe) drainage in north-western Gabon, extending into Equatorial Guinea. These are small, shaded forest streams rather than open rivers. A first-hand account by Ted Judy, who collected the species near Mitzic in 2011, describes a stream running under a dense bamboo canopy through cleared agricultural country, with shallow banks, a wide humus-rich flood plain, and a bottom of sandy substrate buried under deep drifts of plant detritus and leaf litter, all stained near-black by tannins. The in-situ chemistry there was extreme by cichlid standards: pH 4.0, conductivity about 12 microsiemens, general and carbonate hardness essentially nil, and a cool temperature of roughly 73 °F (74 °F) despite the tropical air — water far softer and more acidic than most aquarists associate with cichlids. FishBase lists a preferred range of 75–79 °F, consistent with these cool, shaded headwaters. The fish is a leaf-litter specialist: collectors found adults in the deeper pools and juveniles concentrated in shallow, low-flow pockets where leaves accumulate, and the whole population dived into the detritus to escape disturbance, so that the surest way to net them was to scoop up masses of submerged leaves and pick through them. Recorded stream depths in this habitat are shallow — on the order of a metre at most in the pools.

Feeding

Like its chromidotilapiine relatives, Parananochromis gabonicus is a small, opportunistic micropredator and forager of the leaf-litter zone. FishBase estimates a trophic level around 3.3, and the Cichlid Room Companion characterizes the genus as detritivorous, insectivorous and omnivorous — a fish that works the layer of decaying leaves and soft sediment for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and the associated organic detritus. The pointed snout suits picking prey from among leaves and crevices rather than sifting open sand. In the stream community it shares the leaf beds with tetras, barbs, killifish and small catfish, occupying the role of a benthic invertebrate-gleaner. In captivity it proves a willing omnivore, taking small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, Artemia nauplii and blackworms readily, which is how breeders condition females into spawning shape.

Mating

Parananochromis gabonicus is monogamous and forms pair bonds, with both parents involved in defending the brood — the standard chromidotilapiine pattern. As with much of the genus, the social cost of that pairing is intense intraspecific aggression. Males in particular will not tolerate a rival male in a confined space; keepers report that attempts to colony-spawn the closely related Parananochromis brevirostris by housing several of each sex together collapsed to a single survivor within days. For gabonicus the practical solution that has worked is to keep one pair per tank, let a ripe female (recognizable by a flushed, pinkish abdomen) settle, and pair her with a single male over a chosen cave. Courtship and pair maintenance center on that cave; the female is the more cave-focused of the two, and in observed spawnings the male contributes comparatively little brood care and may be driven away from the fry once they appear. The aggression that makes the species difficult is a direct extension of this tight, territorial pair structure — there is little tolerance for a third fish near an active nest.

Breeding

FishBase classes Parananochromis gabonicus as a monogamous, biparental substrate (cave) spawner with sexual dichromatism, and the available captive accounts bear that out while adding a striking wrinkle. Females spawn inside a small-entranced cave; fry rearing proceeds 'in the standard chromidotilapine fashion,' with the female taking the leading role and the male only loosely attached. The wrinkle is larvophile mouthbrooding: when she perceives a threat, the female Parananochromis gabonicus takes all of her free-swimming fry into her mouth and retreats to the cave, holding them for several minutes — even venturing out to confront the male — before releasing them again. This places her on the mouthbrooding edge of a tribe that ranges from pure substrate spawners to the full bi-parental and maternal mouthbrooders Chromidotilapia and Benitochromis, and it is not surprising given those relatives. A recurring problem in captive breeding is badly skewed sex ratios — congeners are notorious for producing almost all-female or, in Parananochromis caudifasciatus, nearly all-male broods. Ted Judy's account credits two factors with yielding a workable ratio of roughly 60 percent female to 40 percent male: very low pH inside the spawning microhabitat, and cool temperatures. Sex in many chromidotilapiines (as in the related Pelvicachromis) is influenced by the chemical and thermal environment of the eggs rather than fixed by chromosomes, so the conditions of incubation matter directly. Tellingly, Judy's females ignored bare caves and only spawned once a cave was stuffed with long-fibre sphagnum moss, inside which he measured a pH of about 4.5 — about half a point below the tank water — supporting his hypothesis that the natural nest lies deep under acidic leaf-litter. No precise wild clutch count is published for this species; congeneric chromidotilapiine cave spawns of this size typically run from a few dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred small eggs.

In the aquarium

Parananochromis gabonicus is a rare, advanced-aquarist fish rather than a community staple; the Cichlid Room Companion flags the genus as one for experienced keepers, and it appears only sporadically in the hobby through dedicated West-African specialists. It is best kept as a single pair in a modest but well-structured tank — breeders have used aquaria around 20 US gal per pair, with larger, leaf-littered tanks used to hold small mixed groups once fish are grown and tempers have cooled. The single most important husbandry fact is the water: this fish comes from blackwater at pH 4.0 and near-zero hardness, and serious keeping (and any hope of breeding) means very soft, acidic, tannin-rich water. Reverse-osmosis water lightly reconstituted, then acidified into the pH 5.0–6.0 range, with abundant leaf litter (boiled oak leaves work well) and bogwood to leach tannins, mirrors the wild stream. Crucially, these are cool-water cichlids: keepers report unplugging heaters entirely and holding the tank at about 70–73 °F (70–74 °F), well below the temperature most African cichlids are given, and both the cool water and the low pH are implicated in obtaining viable, balanced broods. Furnish the tank with a sand substrate, subdued lighting, floating or attached Anubias for cover, and several small caves — the proven trick is to stuff a breeding cave with sphagnum moss, which the females strongly prefer. Feeding is undemanding: a varied omnivore diet of small live and frozen foods (daphnia, Artemia, blackworms) keeps fish in condition. The great pitfall is aggression. Males kill rival males, and pairs do not suffer extra fish near a nest, so colony attempts in small tanks fail; manage the fish as pairs, give grow-out fry plenty of space, and expect that the all-important sex ratio may not declare itself until the young are roughly six months old, at which point they pair off and turf wars begin. Treated as a soft-acid, cool-water dwarf cichlid for a patient specialist, it can be bred and held as a sustaining colony — outside those conditions it is easily lost.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Parananochromis gabonicus as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants, published 2010). The species is widespread across the forest streams of northern Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, is of no commercial fisheries interest, and rates low on modelled fishing-vulnerability scales, so it carries no immediate conservation flag and no CITES listing. That said, its habitat is the kind most exposed to land-use change: the streams it lives in run through country actively being cleared for agriculture, and the wider Lower Guinea region faces pressure from deforestation and, increasingly, proposed hydropower development on Gabonese rivers that researchers warn would fragment freshwater habitat for hundreds of fish species. As a small-range forest endemic dependent on shaded, leaf-littered, blackwater headwaters, Parananochromis gabonicus is more sensitive to canopy loss and watershed disturbance than its current Least Concern status alone conveys, even though no specific population decline has been documented for it.
