Pelvicachromis silviae is a small, intensely coloured West-African dwarf cichlid endemic to the lower Niger River system of southern Nigeria. Like its better-known relative the kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher), it is a biparental cave-spawner in which the smaller female, not the male, wears the brighter dress — a glowing red belly framed by green-gold flanks. It reached the hobby years before it had a name, traded as 'Pelvicachromis sp. aff. subocellatus' and under several provisional labels, until Anton Lamboj formally described it in 2013 and dedicated it to his wife, Silvia.

Taxonomy & naming

Pelvicachromis silviae was described by the Austrian cichlid specialist Anton Lamboj in 2013, in the journal Cybium, under the title 'A new dwarf cichlid (Perciformes) from Nigeria.' The holotype (NMW 95243), a male of about 2 in standard length, is held in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (Vienna), with paratypes split between Vienna (NMW 95244) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren (MRAC). The type locality is the river Uwerum near the village of Ughelli, in Delta State, southern Nigeria, within the lower Niger River system. The genus Pelvicachromis Thys van den Audenaerde, 1968 is a compact group of West-African dwarf cichlids that also contains the familiar kribs Pelvicachromis pulcher and Pelvicachromis taeniatus; it sits in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae of the Cichlidae. Lamboj diagnosed silviae against its congeners by a combination of meristic and morphometric characters — a notably deeper body, shorter snout, larger eye and several proportional differences — together with the unique breeding coloration of the female. He regarded it as a close relative of Pelvicachromis subocellatus, and indeed the fish had circulated in the aquarium trade for years before 2013 under the working label 'Pelvicachromis sp. aff. subocellatus' and other provisional names applied to lower-Niger 'blue-finned' kribs. Those trade tags should be read as pre-description placeholders, not as established common names.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf cichlid: the largest measured type specimen reached about 2 in standard length, and adults are typically in the 2–3 in total-length range, females running a shade smaller than males. The body is comparatively deep for the genus — body depth runs roughly 37-43% of standard length, one of the characters Lamboj used to separate it from the slimmer Pelvicachromis pulcher, Pelvicachromis taeniatus and Pelvicachromis sacrimontis. Fin counts are 14-16 dorsal spines with 9-10 soft rays, and 3 anal spines with 7-8 soft rays. As in all kribs the species is strongly dichromatic, but in the krib manner the female is the showier sex in breeding dress: her belly flushes a deep cherry-to-purple red, and that red zone is overlaid above by greenish and yellow scaling rather than the silver scaling seen around the belly of Pelvicachromis subocellatus — a key diagnostic Lamboj singled out. Males are larger and more soberly coloured over the body, with longer, more pointed unpaired fins; the species shows a lappet-like elongation of some caudal-fin rays in the male, another feature distinguishing it from Pelvicachromis subocellatus. Both sexes carry the iridescent blue sheen on fins and gill cover that earned lower-Niger forms their 'blue fin' trade names. Sexual dimorphism is therefore pronounced and, unusually, runs in the female's favour for colour.

Habitat

Pelvicachromis silviae is endemic to the lower Niger River basin in southern Nigeria, in the freshwaters of the Niger Delta region; the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both restrict its known range to the lower parts of the Niger River system. The type series came from the river Uwerum near Ughelli in Delta State, placing the species squarely in the maze of small forest streams and creeks that feed the western delta. These are the classic Pelvicachromis biotopes: shallow, slow-flowing to gently moving watercourses running through forested country, shaded by overhanging vegetation, with leaf litter, submerged roots and patches of aquatic plants providing cover and spawning sites. Water in the lower-lying, less tidally influenced streams of the delta tends to be soft and acidic, of the blackwater type, though the broader delta grades toward harder, more alkaline and even slightly brackish conditions nearer the coast. In-situ chemistry specific to silviae has not been widely published, but congeners from the same region occupy soft water around pH 5.5-6.9 at warm tropical temperatures of roughly 24-27 C. Like other kribs it is a benthopelagic fish of the lower water column, keeping close to the bottom and to structure rather than ranging into open water. No precise depth profile has been recorded; as a small fish of shallow streams and creek margins it occupies the uppermost band of water, on the order of the top one to two metres.

Feeding

No dedicated gut-content study of Pelvicachromis silviae has been published, but its ecology can be read confidently from its anatomy, its relatives and FishBase's estimated trophic level of about 3.2. It is a small benthic omnivore that forages over the stream bed and through leaf litter, taking aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other micro-invertebrates along with algae, biofilm and organic detritus picked from surfaces and the substrate. Kribs are not specialised sand-sifters in the manner of the South-American eartheaters; they are opportunistic gleaners of the bottom and lower water column. In the stream community the species functions as one of many small invertivore-omnivores working the litter and root zones, a role reflected in captivity by its easy acceptance of a varied diet.

Mating

Pelvicachromis silviae is a monogamous, pair-bonding cichlid that forms a lasting bond between one male and one female around a defended cave. Pair formation is mediated heavily by colour: a ripe female solicits the male by presenting her swollen, vividly red belly, curving her body and quivering before him at the cave entrance in the courtship display typical of the genus. The pair then jointly stakes out and defends a territory centred on a chosen cavity — under wood, among roots, in a rock crevice or, in captivity, inside a flowerpot or shell. Within the genus, compatibility between the two fish matters a great deal: a mismatched or newly introduced pair can quarrel, and the standard hobby practice of growing several juveniles together so that they self-select partners applies here as it does to Pelvicachromis pulcher. Outside of spawning the species is comparatively peaceful for a cichlid, its aggression flaring mainly in defence of the breeding cave and brood.

Breeding

In aquaria Pelvicachromis silviae is, in FishBase's words, 'a monogamous, pair bonding cave-spawner' — the classic krib reproductive mode. The female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or inner wall of a sheltered cave and tends them there while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory; the pair then guides the free-swimming fry through the tank in a tight school, herding them back to cover at any disturbance, exactly as Pelvicachromis pulcher does. Published fecundity figures specific to silviae are scarce, but keeper reports give a useful range: a young pair's first spawn may yield only about twenty fry, while established, well-conditioned pairs produce broods of a hundred or more — consistent with the 50-300 eggs reported for the closely allied kribs. Eggs typically hatch within a few days and the fry are free-swimming roughly a week after spawning, at which point they take newly hatched brine shrimp and powdered foods. Keepers describe the fry as fast-growing and the parents as attentive; the main obstacle to breeding is simply getting a settled, compatible pair into spawning condition, which can take months. Soft, acidic, warm water and a diet rich in live and frozen foods are the usual triggers.

In the aquarium

Pelvicachromis silviae is frequently imported to Europe and North America for the ornamental trade and, per the original description, 'seems not to be rare,' though it is less ubiquitous than the common krib. It is a rewarding aquarium fish for a keeper who can provide the right water, but it is less bombproof than Pelvicachromis pulcher and rewards attention to detail. A single pair can be housed in a tank from about 23.5 in (roughly 20 US gal) upward; more space is welcome if tankmates are added, since a breeding pair will defend a territory around its cave. The single most important furnishing is cover: several caves — flowerpots laid on their sides with a chipped entrance, coconut shells, or pieces of bogwood and rock — so the pair can claim a hideaway and other fish can stay out of sight. A soft sand or fine, smooth gravel substrate suits the species' habit of pottering and light digging, and subdued lighting with floating plants and tannin-stained water mimics the shaded forest streams it comes from and helps the fish feel secure.

Water should reflect its blackwater origins: warm at about 24-27 C, soft, and on the acidic side. Wild-type fish do best at a low pH — anywhere from around 5.5 up to neutral is workable, with the lower, softer end favoured for long-term health and for breeding; keepers report success in the pH 6.5-7.0 band as well. As with other kribs, tank-bred stock tolerates a wider chemistry than wild imports, but very hard, alkaline water is not its element. Good water quality matters: like all Pelvicachromis it appreciates clean, well-oxygenated water free of accumulated waste, so generous filtration and regular water changes pay off, while strong current should be avoided in favour of gentle flow.

Feeding is straightforward. As an omnivore it takes quality sinking pellets and flakes readily, but colour and breeding condition come from a varied menu that includes live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, small invertebrates — alongside some vegetable or algae-based matter. For tankmates, choose calm, open-water dither fish that occupy the upper layers and leave the bottom to the cichlids: small West-African characins, rasboras or similar peaceful schooling species work well. Avoid boisterous, fin-nipping or aggressively territorial bottom-dwellers, and be ready for a spawning pair to become assertive around its cave. The common mistakes are predictable: hard, alkaline water, too little cover, an incompatible pair forced together, and impatience — settled silviae can take months to spawn but reward the wait.

Conservation

Pelvicachromis silviae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as of the 2025-2 version it carries the status Not Evaluated (NE), and it is likewise outside CITES. There is, in short, no formal conservation appraisal of the species. That absence of an assessment is not the same as security. The fish is a narrow-range endemic of the lower Niger and the Niger Delta — one of the most heavily populated and industrialised river systems in Africa, and a region under sustained pressure from oil extraction and associated pollution, deforestation, urban and agricultural runoff, and the draining and modification of the delta's forest streams. Small forest-stream cichlids with restricted distributions are exactly the kind of fish most exposed to such localised habitat loss. The species is also collected for the aquarium trade, but it breeds readily in captivity and tank-raised stock is established, which buffers wild populations from collection pressure. A formal assessment would be valuable; until one exists, its status is best regarded as genuinely unknown rather than as confirmed security.
