Pelvicachromis kribensis is a small, dichromatic dwarf cichlid endemic to the short coastal rivers of southern Cameroon and the offshore island of Bioko. Its name carries one of the hobby's most persistent muddles: for decades "kribensis" was the trade name slapped on the common Nigerian krib, Pelvicachromis pulcher, and the true Pelvicachromis kribensis itself spent half a century buried as a synonym of Pelvicachromis taeniatus. Only in 2014 was Boulenger's 1911 name resurrected for the swarm of jewel-coloured Cameroonian location forms — Moliwe, Lobé, Kienké, Dehane and a dozen more — that aquarists had long prized without a stable name to attach to them.

Taxonomy & naming

George Albert Boulenger described this fish in 1911 as Pelmatochromis kribensis, in a short paper in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History naming three new freshwater fishes that the missionary-naturalist George Latimer Bates had collected in South Cameroon. The type series — syntypes held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH) — came from the Kribi River on the southern Cameroonian coast, which is also the source of the epithet. The genus Pelmatochromis was later dismantled: Thys van den Audenaerde's 1968 revision erected the subgenus Pelvicachromis, which Trewavas raised to full genus rank in 1974. In that same 1968 work, however, Thys van den Audenaerde synonymized kribensis (and the form calliptera Pellegrin, 1929) with Pelvicachromis taeniatus (Boulenger, 1901), a species whose type locality lies in Nigeria. He gave no firm morphological case for the merger, leaning mainly on caudal-fin colour patterns and the faded condition of the taeniatus types, and for the next four-plus decades kribensis was treated in the scientific literature as a junior synonym. Hobbyist authors (Paulo 1977; Loiselle & Castro 1980) repeatedly doubted that lumping, pointing to the obvious colour differences between Nigerian and Cameroonian fish, but none published a formal revision. The matter was finally settled by Anton Lamboj, David Bartel and Emanuel Dell'Ampio in a 2014 paper in Cybium that combined molecular, morphological and anatomical data: they revalidated Pelvicachromis kribensis for the Cameroonian populations south and west of the Wouri, restricted Pelvicachromis taeniatus to Nigeria and Benin, and described the Wouri-system fish as a new species, Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi. The Catalog of Fishes and FishBase now both list kribensis as valid. Lamboj himself cautions that the species as currently drawn may still be a complex — the geographically isolated 'Moliwe', 'Ndonga' and 'Dehane' forms could prove distinct once material from north of the Nyong is studied. Within the genus, Pelvicachromis sits in the tribe Chromidotilapiini of the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae.

Morphology

Pelvicachromis kribensis is a small, elongate dwarf cichlid. FishBase records a maximum of about 2.5 in total length, while field and hobby sources cite larger fish — males commonly to 3 in and occasionally near 3.5 in, with females smaller — so the practical adult range runs roughly 2.5–3.5 in depending on sex and source. The body is moderately gracile with a rounded head; the dorsal fin carries 16–18 spines and 7–9 soft rays, the anal fin 3 spines and 6–7 soft rays. Lamboj and colleagues diagnose it by a male caudal fin that lacks the black or white margins and submargins seen in its close relatives Pelvicachromis taeniatus and Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi: instead the male's caudal typically shows a red upper margin (sometimes with a white-to-bluish submarginal band in Lobé-system fish), a reddish central field crossed by four to seven rows of blue spots, and — in most populations — a yellowish patch in the upper half bearing two to eight black dots (these dots are absent in the Lobé and Nyete forms). Females are the showier sex in courtship, flushing an intense wine-purple to cherry-red on the belly and lower flanks, with an iridescent yellow-to-white dorsal fin edged in a thin black margin. This is a strongly dichromatic and dimorphic species, and on top of that base pattern it varies enormously by locality: each river population — Moliwe, Ndonga, Kienké, Lobé, Dehane, Bandevouri, Lokoundjé and the rest — is a recognizably different colour morph, which is much of the fish's appeal.

Habitat

The species is confined to the coastal freshwater belt of southern Cameroon, plus the nearby island of Bioko (Equatorial Guinea) in the Gulf of Guinea. Its many populations are scattered across the flat lowland zone within roughly 31 mi of the coast, in a long string of short, independent rivers and their tributaries — among them the Moliwe, Mungo-area creeks around Mount Cameroon, and the Nyong, Lokoundjé, Kienké, Lobé and Dehane systems further south. These are small, shaded forest streams and rivulets running beneath a dense bankside canopy. The water is shallow — field workers report depths of only about 6–19.5 in — over a substrate of sand and fine sediment usually carpeted with fallen leaf litter, and in places vegetated with Anubias, Bolbitis and Crinum. Because the populations are geographically isolated, in-situ chemistry varies widely between rivers. Recent field measurements span pH from about 5.2 in the soft, blackish Kienké, Nyong and Lokoundjé waters up to about 7.6 in the more mineralized Moliwe, with conductivity ranging from a near-rainwater 6 µS/cm in the Lobé to roughly 130–289 µS/cm at Moliwe. Recorded temperatures clustered tightly between about 26.5 and 83 °F. All recorded habitats are pure freshwater; despite the coastal setting, the species has not been found in brackish estuaries.

Feeding

Like the rest of its genus, Pelvicachromis kribensis is a small benthic omnivore that forages over the leaf-littered stream bed. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.2, reflecting a mixed diet of small invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other meiofauna sifted from sediment and detritus — supplemented by algae and plant matter. Hobbyist and field observers note that, like the better-known kribs, it readily browses biofilm, algae and detritus as well as taking live prey, which is consistent with the modest gut and generalist habits of a leaf-litter dweller. In its native streams it occupies the role of a small, bottom-oriented forager picking through the detritus layer of shaded, slow-moving forest water.

Mating

Pelvicachromis kribensis forms monogamous, biparental pairs, and as in its relatives it is the female that drives courtship — an unusual emphasis among cichlids and a hallmark of the genus. A ripe female solicits the male by intensifying her colours and 'dancing' in front of him, arching and curling her body to flaunt a darkened, wine-purple to cherry-red belly; the courtship display is essentially a female advertisement of condition. Pairs are best formed by raising a group of young fish together and letting them choose partners, because an arbitrarily paired male and female may prove incompatible and the mismatch can turn lethal. Away from breeding the fish are shy and rather retiring, but once a pair commits to a site they become territorial, defending a small area around their chosen cave with short, sharp bursts of aggression directed at intruders — including conspecifics. The female typically tends the immediate nest while the male patrols and holds the wider territory border.

Breeding

This is a biparental cave spawner. The pair selects a sheltered cavity — a hollow under a root or rock, or in the aquarium a coconut shell, a ceramic cave, or the classic upturned flowerpot with a notch chipped in the rim — and the female deposits her eggs on the roof or wall of the chamber. Clutch size in Pelvicachromis is modest, generally on the order of 40 to 300 eggs depending on the female's size and condition. The female stays with the eggs inside the cave, fanning and tending them, while the male defends the surrounding territory. Eggs hatch in roughly two to three days and the larvae become free-swimming after about a further five to eight days, at which point the female leads the wriggling shoal of fry out to forage while the male continues to guard the perimeter; both parents share brood care. The free-swimming fry are large enough to take brine-shrimp nauplii and microworm immediately and will also graze algae and detritus. Spawning is triggered by good conditioning on live and frozen foods together with soft, slightly acidic, warm water; pairs will brood successive clutches, and the young are usually left with the parents until the next spawn approaches, at which point they should be removed to forestall aggression between the adults.

In the aquarium

The true Pelvicachromis kribensis is an established but comparatively uncommon aquarium fish, often sold under its old label of Pelvicachromis taeniatus and best sought from specialist breeders and dwarf-cichlid clubs by its specific location form ("Moliwe", "Kienké", "Dehane" and so on). It is a rewarding dwarf cichlid of moderate difficulty — undemanding day to day, but with the usual Pelvicachromis sensitivities. A single pair can be bred in a tank of around 60 × 35 × 12 in (about 20 US gal), but if other fish are to share the aquarium a footprint of a metre or more is strongly advised so tankmates can stay clear of the pair's territory during brood care.

The biotope is easy to read off the wild habitat: a fine sand or fine-gravel substrate (dark sand best shows off the colours), subdued lighting, leaf litter and driftwood, scattered shade-tolerant plants such as Anubias and Bolbitis, and — crucially — several enclosed caves to serve as spawning sites. Water should be soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral; the species tolerates a fairly wide window (pH roughly 5.0–7.5, hardness under about 12 °dGH), but pH around 6.0–7.0 and soft water suit breeding best. A temperature of about 75–81 °F matches the wild streams; many keepers run breeding tanks toward 75–79 °F. Flow should be gentle, mirroring the slow forest creeks, and an air-driven sponge filter is preferable in a breeding setup so fry are not drawn into a power filter.

All Pelvicachromis are prone to bacterial problems when water quality slips, so mature filtration and regular partial water changes (around a third weekly) matter more than raw filter power. Feeding is straightforward: a varied diet of live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) with quality dried foods and an algae- or vegetable-based component keeps the fish in colour and condition. Temperament is the main thing to manage — the fish are shy and even a little timid outside breeding, but turn pointedly territorial when they have eggs or fry, delivering short chasing bouts at anything that strays too close. Peaceful, similarly sized companions that share the soft, shaded-water preference work well: small West African characins and killifish for a biotope tank, or small tetras, rasboras and Corydoras more generally. The common pitfalls are forcing an incompatible pair (which can end in a death), keeping the fish too brightly lit and exposed, and crossing different location forms — which should be avoided to keep the distinctive wild morphs pure.

Conservation

Pelvicachromis kribensis has not been evaluated for the IUCN Red List; as of the 2025-2 version FishBase and the Cichlid Room Companion both report it as Not Evaluated, and it carries no CITES or CMS listing. No formal assessment of its population or trend therefore exists. The species' profile is mixed from a conservation standpoint: on one hand it is collected for the ornamental trade and several of its populations are tiny, geographically isolated forms restricted to single short coastal rivers, which makes them inherently vulnerable to localized habitat change; on the other, the genus is hardy and fast-reproducing, and the fish is widely captive-bred, which relieves some collecting pressure. The broader risk to its lowland forest-stream habitat comes from deforestation, agriculture and coastal development across southern Cameroon's narrow coastal belt — pressures that bear on the shaded, leaf-littered creeks each location form depends on. Because the 2014 revision suggests kribensis may yet be split into several narrow-range species, the conservation status of its individual forms deserves closer attention than the single unevaluated name currently conveys.
