Taxonomy & naming
Rocio gemmata was described by Salvador Contreras-Balderas and Juan Jacobo Schmitter-Soto in 2007, in the same revisionary work (Schmitter-Soto's Zootaxa monograph on Archocentrus and allies) that erected the genus Rocio. Until then the spangled Yucatán populations had been lumped with Rocio octofasciata, the Jack Dempsey, but the authors recognized them as a distinct, smaller, more easterly species and named it gemmata for its gem-like spangling. It is one of three valid species in Rocio alongside octofasciata and spinosissima. The genus belongs to the Middle American heroine cichlids (tribe Heroini) and is allied to the firemouths (Thorichthys); Rocio was named by Schmitter-Soto in honour of his wife, María del Rocío. The type material is from the eastern Yucatán Peninsula.
Morphology
Rocio gemmata is a small cichlid — FishBase reports a maximum around 3 in SL, making it the smallest member of its genus and considerably more compact than the Jack Dempsey, though mature fish in good condition may exceed this somewhat. The body plan is the typical stocky Rocio shape, deepest through the mid-body, with the genus's heavy scatter of iridescent blue-green to turquoise spangles over a dark grey-brown ground; a series of faint vertical bars and a dark midlateral and caudal-base spot complete the pattern. The spangling is dense and bright, the feature for which the species is named. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus: mature males grow somewhat larger with more produced, pointed dorsal and anal fin tips and more intense spangling, while ripe females are rounder-bellied and often show a more contrasting dark flank blotch. It can be distinguished from Rocio octofasciata by its smaller size, restricted range and details of meristics and coloration given in the original description.
Habitat
The species is apparently endemic to the eastern Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico — the lowland karst country of Quintana Roo and adjacent areas — where it occurs in the clear, hard, alkaline waters characteristic of that limestone landscape: cenotes (sinkhole pools), spring-fed streams, lagoons and the slow lowland reaches that drain the peninsula. These are warm, mineral-rich, often crystal-clear waters over limestone and sand with submerged vegetation and leaf litter. Detailed in-situ chemistry has not been widely published, but waters of this type are typically warm (mid-to-upper 20s °C) and distinctly alkaline and hard, in keeping with the karst geology; the species' range overlaps that of other Yucatán endemic cichlids adapted to these conditions.
Feeding
Like its congeners, Rocio gemmata is a small carnivorous generalist, taken to feed on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates gleaned from the substrate, vegetation and leaf litter; FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.2. In the clear Yucatán waters it inhabits it forages over the bottom and among plants for small invertebrate prey, a role typical of the smaller heroine cichlids of the peninsula. No specialised feeding adaptation distinguishes it from the general picking-and-grabbing habit of the genus.
Mating
Detailed wild reproductive behaviour for Rocio gemmata has not been described in the literature, but it is expected to follow the well-documented pattern of its genus and the heroine cichlids generally: monogamous pair formation, joint defence of a breeding territory, and the usual courtship of lateral display and cooperative substrate cleaning, with pairs becoming more colourful and territorial as spawning approaches. Its small size makes it a less overtly aggressive fish than the Jack Dempsey, but breeding pairs can be expected to defend a territory vigorously at spawning time.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild in detail; by genus and family it is a biparental open substrate spawner. The expected pattern — shared with the closely related and well-studied Rocio octofasciata — is for the female to lay a clutch of adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface and for both parents to share care: the female fanning and tending the eggs, the male guarding the territory, and both guarding the free-swimming fry as a school. Clutch sizes in so small a fish would be modest by the standards of the genus (likely on the order of one to a few hundred eggs). The species has been bred occasionally by specialist keepers, following the standard biparental-cichlid approach, but it is far less commonly maintained than the Jack Dempsey.
In the aquarium
Rocio gemmata is a comparatively rare aquarium fish — kept mainly by Central American cichlid specialists rather than in the general trade — but it is an attractive, manageable species for those who can source it. Its small adult size means it needs far less space than the Jack Dempsey: a tank of around 25–40 US gal suits a pair, with more room if kept with companions. Given its Yucatán-karst origins it should be kept in hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.5–8.2) at warm temperatures of about 75–82 °F; it is not a soft-water fish. Good filtration and routine water changes keep it healthy.
Aquascaping should echo its clear, limestone-water habitat: a sand or fine-gravel substrate, rock and driftwood structure providing caves and broken sight-lines, and a flat stone as a potential spawning site. Hardy plants anchored to wood or rock work; the fish is a modest digger. Because it is small and only moderately aggressive, it can be kept with other peaceful-to-assertive Central American fishes of similar size and water needs, but as with all pair-forming cichlids, breeding adults turn territorial and tankmates may need to be removed or given space. Feeding is straightforward — quality small cichlid pellets and flake supplemented with frozen and live invertebrate foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) bring out its spangled colour. The chief husbandry note is to respect its hard, alkaline water requirement and not to confuse it, in care terms, with soft-water dwarf cichlids.
Conservation
Rocio gemmata is a narrow-range endemic of the eastern Yucatán Peninsula, and that restricted distribution is the central conservation consideration for the species. The karstic freshwaters of the peninsula — cenotes, springs and lowland streams — are under growing pressure from rapid tourism and urban development, groundwater extraction, pollution of the aquifer, and the spread of introduced fishes, all of which bear on the localized fauna. The species' formal IUCN Red List status has not been clearly established in the sources consulted (it is treated here as Not Evaluated pending verification), but as a small-range Yucatán endemic it warrants the same precautionary attention as the peninsula's other narrowly distributed cichlids. It carries no CITES listing.
