Cyprinodon maya was formally described by María de Lourdes Lozano-Vilano and Salvador Contreras-Balderas in 1993, with the type locality given as Laguna Chichancanab, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Cyprinodon maya Lozano-Vilano & Contreras-Balderas, 1993, placing it within the genus Cyprinodon — the pupfishes — and the family Cyprinodontidae.
The genus name Cyprinodon derives from two Greek roots: kyprinos, meaning 'carp', and odous (genitive odontos), meaning 'tooth' — a reference to the small, tricuspid teeth that distinguish these fish from superficially similar cyprinids. The specific epithet maya honours the Maya civilisation whose ancestral territory encompasses the Yucatán Peninsula and whose people have lived alongside these lakes for millennia.
The Chichancanab radiation to which C. maya belongs has attracted sustained interest from evolutionary biologists. Field surveys have documented four to five sympatric species within the lake basin, each with distinct trophic morphology: C. maya is considered the ecological generalist of the group, while relatives such as C. labiosus (the thick-lipped carnivore) and C. simus (the protruding-jawed 'boxer' pupfish) have evolved specialised feeding apparatus that reduces direct resource competition. The entire radiation is thought to have originated in less than 8,000 years from a single colonising lineage, placing it among the fastest vertebrate diversifications known.
Morphology
Cyprinodon maya reaches a maximum recorded total length of 4 in (FishBase), though most individuals encountered in the field are considerably smaller. Like other members of the genus, it is a stocky, deep-bodied fish with a rounded snout, a relatively terminal to slightly upturned mouth bearing tricuspid teeth adapted for scraping, and large, rounded scales. The overall body plan is compact and robust — a hallmark of pupfishes that reflects adaptation to shallow, fluctuating water bodies.
As the generalist of the Chichancanab radiation, C. maya lacks the exaggerated morphological specialisations visible in its sympatric relatives. It does not display the dramatically thickened, fleshy lips of C. labiosus nor the protruding lower jaw of C. simus. Coloration in males is typically bright blue-violet on the flanks and head during the breeding season, with dark vertical banding that becomes more vivid during courtship. Females are more cryptically coloured in tawny or olive tones with diffuse banding. Outside of breeding condition, males are less intensely coloured and the sexes can be harder to distinguish at a glance.
Habitat
Cyprinodon maya is a strict endemic confined to the Laguna Chichancanab system in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The lake sits on the karst limestone platform of the Yucatán Peninsula and is characterised by hard, alkaline water with gypsum precipitates visible on the substrate and shoreline. The water chemistry reflects the karstic geology: calcium- and magnesium-rich, with elevated pH, and negligible soft-water influence. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and non-migratory.
Laguna Chichancanab covers approximately 12 square miles and is relatively shallow throughout. The lake's isolation on the karst platform, combined with its distinctive water chemistry and the absence of river connectivity to other major basins, created the conditions for in-situ speciation. The near-permanent nature of the lake distinguishes this radiation from the annual-pool pupfishes of the Chihuahuan Desert — C. maya and its relatives inhabit a stable, perennial water body and are not adapted to seasonal desiccation.
Water temperature in the lake is warm year-round given the tropical lowland setting, and FishBase notes approximately 72 °F as a recorded figure, though temperatures will naturally vary across seasons and depths within a shallow lake on the Yucatán. The lake's gypsum substrate and alkaline chemistry set it apart from the soft, acidic blackwaters of other pupfish habitats; this is hard, mineral-rich water, not the warm desert-spring hypersaline setting of the Death Valley pupfishes but sharing the same emphasis on permanent, chemistry-challenging conditions.
Feeding
FishBase records the adult diet of Cyprinodon maya as primarily piscivorous — adults feed on fishes. This is notable within the Chichancanab radiation because C. maya occupies the generalist niche, and the shift toward piscivory in adults reflects the resource partitioning that allows multiple Cyprinodon species to coexist in the same lake. Juveniles and smaller individuals likely consume invertebrates, algae, detritus, and small crustaceans in line with the ancestral pupfish feeding strategy, with piscivory increasing as body size allows.
The trophic diversity of the Chichancanab radiation — generalist (C. maya), thick-lipped carnivore (C. labiosus), jaw-protruding forager (C. simus) — is understood to be a key mechanism enabling sympatric coexistence. Each species can access food resources unavailable or less efficiently exploited by the others, reducing interspecific competition. This partitioning has been central to arguments that the radiation involved ecological character displacement rather than simple neutral drift.
Mating
As a non-annual pupfish inhabiting a permanent lake, Cyprinodon maya does not undergo the annual desiccation cycle associated with seasonal pool killies and does not bury eggs in substrate for diapause. Breeding activity is tied instead to environmental cues within the lake — likely temperature seasonality, photoperiod, and food availability — rather than the life-or-death urgency of a drying pool.
Male Maya pupfishes are territorial during the breeding season, actively defending small patches of substrate or vegetation against rival males and displaying vivid blue-violet coloration to attract females. Courtship involves lateral displays, fin-spreading, and chasing. The polygamous mating system typical of Cyprinodon species means a single dominant male may attempt to spawn with multiple females; female choice and male contest competition both shape which pairings succeed. The intense sexual selection pressure implied by the conspicuous male coloration is consistent with conditions in a permanent-water environment where visual signalling is feasible and sustained over an extended breeding season.
Breeding
Cyprinodon maya is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, roots, or other submerged structure near the substrate or among marginal vegetation, returning to spawn repeatedly over days or weeks. Eggs incubate in the water column rather than undergoing diapause in sediment, and there is no requirement for a dry period to trigger hatching. The American Killifish Association confirms this non-annual, plant-spawning mode as typical for Cyprinodon in permanent freshwater habitats.
In aquarium conditions, a ratio of one male to two or more females is advisable to distribute male aggression, which can be intense in confined spaces. Spawning mops or fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort) provide suitable deposition sites. Eggs can be collected by removing the mop or plants to a separate container of conditioned water at the same temperature and chemistry as the main tank, where they will hatch after several days at warm temperatures. Fry are small but robust and accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worm from the outset; they grow steadily at warm temperatures and reach maturity within a few months.
In the aquarium
Cyprinodon maya is rarely encountered in the hobby but is kept by specialist killifish enthusiasts and by researchers and conservation breeding programmes monitoring the Chichancanab radiation. Its care requirements reflect its natural environment: hard, alkaline water is essential. A pH of 7.5–8.5 and moderate to high hardness (general hardness above 10 °dGH) approximate the karstic conditions of Laguna Chichancanab. Temperature should be maintained in the mid-20s Celsius; the tropical Yucatán setting means this is a warm-water fish, not a room-temperature species.
Male Maya pupfishes are aggressive toward one another and toward males of similar size or colouration; in a small tank a dominant male will harass rivals relentlessly. A species tank or a large, well-decorated aquarium with multiple sight-line breaks — rocks, driftwood, dense planting — is recommended. A species-only or single-genus setup allows the species' remarkable behaviour and colouration to be observed without the risk of hybridisation, which has become a conservation concern as introduced fish disrupt the Chichancanab radiation in the wild.
This species is not a display fish for general community aquaria. Its primary value in captivity lies in its biological significance: the Chichancanab pupfishes are among the most intensively studied examples of rapid vertebrate diversification, and captive populations maintained by responsible hobbyists and institutions contribute to documentation of the radiation and, potentially, to insurance against further wild decline.
Conservation
Cyprinodon maya is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated on 4 September 2018 under criterion D2 — a small area of occupancy consistent with a single-lake endemic. The entire wild range of the species is Laguna Chichancanab, a lake of roughly 12 square miles; any catastrophic or sustained deterioration of that water body threatens the whole population simultaneously.
Field surveys conducted between 2022 and 2024 by UC Berkeley and collaborating institutions documented an alarming situation: the introduced cichlid Mayaheros (a large predatory species) is the most immediate biological threat, preying on pupfishes directly and restructuring the lake's ecological community. The tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus has also established populations, competing for food and habitat with the native radiation. Additional introduced species — Poecilia and Astyanax — compound the pressure. These introductions are compounded by water pollution entering the lake from surrounding communities and agricultural activity, and by the physical degradation of lagoon habitats.
The adaptive radiation at Chichancanab is itself part of what makes the conservation situation so acute. The five pupfish species evolved in sympatry and exist nowhere else on Earth; the loss of even one species would erase a unique evolutionary lineage and a data point in one of the world's most compelling natural experiments in speciation. Conservation responses include monitoring by field teams, advocacy for invasive-species management in the lake, and captive breeding initiatives. International attention from the evolutionary biology community has raised the profile of Chichancanab, but on-the-ground protection of the lake from further degradation and invasive introductions remains the decisive challenge.
