Rubricatochromis paynei is a flame-red, blue-spangled jewel cichlid of the coastal forest rivers of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia — one of the most ecologically narrow members of a genus built for soft, tannin-stained West African streams. Described in 1979 by Paul Loiselle and shifted to the resurrected genus Rubricatochromis in 2022, it is an intensely coloured, biparental substrate spawner that turns a remarkable shade of crimson at spawning time and defends its nest with a ferocity disproportionate to its modest 4.5 in frame. Despite its beauty it remains genuinely scarce in the hobby, partly because pre-2004 hobbyist records under the name were routinely misidentified — the fish is out there, but rarely correctly labelled.

Taxonomy & naming

Rubricatochromis paynei was described in 1979 by the American cichlid specialist Paul V. Loiselle in his monographic revision of the genus Hemichromis — a 124-page treatment published in the Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren (Série in 8°, Sciences Zoologiques, No. 228: 1–124). Loiselle placed the species in the Hemichromis bimaculatus group, recognising it as a distinct entity from the broader bimaculatus complex on the basis of its blue head-and-flank spangling pattern, the round black lateral spot above the midlateral line, and proportional characters including a notably short snout (7.8–10.8% of standard length) and deep caudal peduncle.

For more than four decades the species sat in Hemichromis, the catch-all genus for the 'jewel cichlids' that had accumulated species from widely separated parts of sub-Saharan Africa without a satisfying phylogenetic framework. In 2022, Anton Lamboj and Stephan Koblmüller published a molecular and morphological revision (Hydrobiologia 850: 2177–2198; DOI 10.1007/s10750-022-05060-y) that resolved the genus into two non-sister lineages: the five-spotted cichlids, which remain in Hemichromis sensu stricto, and the red-bodied jewels, for which the new genus Rubricatochromis Lamboj & Koblmüller, 2022 was erected. Payne's jewel cichlid moved with the rest of its bimaculatus-group relatives and is currently listed as Rubricatochromis paynei (Loiselle, 1979); the parentheses around the authority mark the transfer from the original genus.

The species name honours Ian A. Payne, a fisheries biologist noted for his field and systematic work on hemichromid cichlids in Sierra Leone — the type locality for the species. FishBase ID: 68953. The old combination Hemichromis paynei remains the most frequent name in the aquarium trade and in literature predating the 2022 revision.

Morphology

Rubricatochromis paynei reaches a maximum of 4.5 in standard length (FishBase), placing it squarely in the mid-range of the jewel cichlid assemblage — somewhat more slender than the broad-shouldered bimaculatus at its limits, but built on the same compressed, ovoid plan that characterises the genus. Meristically it runs XIII–XV dorsal spines with 10–11 soft rays and III anal spines with 7–8 soft rays; the lower pharyngeal bone is strongly sagittiform and heavily dentigerous, carrying 20–24 teeth along its posterior margin — a robust structure consistent with an invertebrate-picking diet.

The most diagnostic external feature is the 'blue spangling': an extensive, stochastically distributed pattern of iridescent blue-green spots scattered across the head and flanks that intensifies dramatically in dominant or breeding fish. This scattering of metallic spots on a base colour that ranges from warm orange-red to deep crimson sets paynei apart from the somewhat heavier and more uniform bimaculatus and from the more spotted guttatus. A round, clearly defined black lateral spot sits above the midlateral line on the flank, a character typical of the bimaculatus group. The snout is distinctly short relative to other members of the complex, and the caudal peduncle is deep.

Sexual dimorphism is modest. Males tend to grow larger and develop slightly longer dorsal and anal fin tips; females, when ripe, take on the intensified crimson flush of breeding condition and their abdomens round noticeably with developing eggs. Outside the breeding season the sexes are difficult to distinguish by colour alone.

Habitat

The species is confined to the coastal river drainages of Upper Guinea — an arc of relatively short, swift-to-moderate rivers that drain the granitic and lateritic hills of Sierra Leone, southeastern Guinea and northern Liberia to the Atlantic. This is one of the most biologically rich freshwater biogeographic zones in Africa: the Upper Guinea forest block escaped the worst of the Pleistocene drying events, giving its river fishes unusually high endemism.

Within these drainages Rubricatochromis paynei favours the forest-stream environment: small to medium rivers and their tributaries running under closed or semi-closed canopy, with heavily shaded banks, dense overhanging and marginal vegetation, submerged roots and leaf litter on the bed, and a variable substrate of sand, fine gravel and larger rocks. Water in the type region is characteristically soft and slightly acidic to neutral — analogous rivers in the zone (including the Kolente basin in Guinea) record pH around 5.8–7.0, near-zero general hardness, and temperatures of roughly 73–81 °F year-round, rising marginally in the dry season when flow drops and pools warm. Conductivity is very low, reflecting the absence of soluble limestone in the granitic basement.

The fish is benthopelagic, staying close to cover — the undersides of submerged wood, root tangles, the lee of boulders — that double as territorial landmarks and spawning sites. It is reported from both entirely freshwater reaches and, at least marginally, from brackish lagoon fringes near the coast; the combination of fluvial and lagoonal coastal habitats suggests a degree of physiological flexibility.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Rubricatochromis paynei a trophic level of 3.5 ± 0.5, placing it in the lower-carnivore or omnivore bracket typical of the jewel cichlid group. In the wild it is a classic opportunistic micro-predator of the forest-stream benthos: small invertebrates (aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms), surface insects fallen onto the water, and whatever organic material — plant fragments, detritus, biofilm — is encountered during foraging runs across the substrate. The robustly toothed pharyngeal apparatus is well-suited to processing hard-bodied invertebrates.

No published gut-content study exists specifically for paynei; diet inferences come from its close morphological and ecological alignment with bimaculatus-group species that have been studied, and from its trophic-level assignment. In the aquarium the fish proves entirely willing to accept prepared foods — quality pellets, flakes — supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia), which reliably bring out the best colour.

Mating

Like all jewel cichlids, Rubricatochromis paynei is monogamous and forms a pair bond that persists across multiple spawning cycles in captivity. Pair formation in the wild is not directly documented, but the pattern observed in the congeners — and in captivity with paynei — follows a consistent template: several fish establish dominance hierarchies through lateral displays and brief chases until a compatible male and female settle on a shared territory. As the bond consolidates, the pair jointly patrol their patch and the colour of both fish deepens toward the breeding crimson.

Courtship proper is a sequence of mutual lateral spreading, quivering and head-dipping over the chosen spawning surface. The female's abdomen becomes visibly distended with eggs and her genital papilla protrudes as spawning approaches. The pair bond is strong — both partners are needed for successful egg guarding — but it is also temperamentally fragile: a mismatched or size-discordant pair can redirect courtship aggression onto each other rather than outward, with lethal results for the weaker fish.

Breeding

Rubricatochromis paynei is a biparental, open/substrate spawner in the classic jewel-cichlid mould. The pair selects a flat, hard surface — a smooth rock face, a large pebble, a piece of slate or the inside base of an inverted flowerpot — which they clean meticulously before the female begins laying. Clutch sizes in bimaculatus-group jewel cichlids typically run 200–500 eggs per spawn; the female deposits them in neat rows while the male follows immediately behind to fertilise each pass.

Both parents tend the clutch. The female fans and inspects the eggs frequently, removing any that go white; the male holds a wider territorial perimeter against intruders. The eggs are adhesive and hatch in 48–72 hours at typical tropical temperatures (roughly 77–81 °F). The wriggling larvae are often moved by the parents to shallow pits excavated in sand nearby, and may be shifted several times before they absorb their yolk sacs and begin free-swimming, usually around day four or five post-hatching.

Once the fry are free-swimming, both parents shepherd them as a tight, mobile school — one of the most visually striking behaviours in the hobby, with a pair in full breeding crimson flanking hundreds of tiny fry. Parental care continues for roughly four weeks before the parents' impulse to re-spawn overrides brood care, at which point fry should be separated in captivity to prevent predation. Breeding triggers in captivity mirror those of other Upper Guinea cichlids: a 20–30% water change, a slight temperature rise of 36–37 °F, and high live-food availability reliably prompt spawning in a settled pair.

In the aquarium

Payne's jewel cichlid is an uncommonly kept fish — partly because the name has historically been misapplied to other jewel cichlids, and partly because it has never achieved the trade volumes of the far more widely distributed bimaculatus-complex species. When genuine paynei are available, they are a rewarding and visually striking acquisition for a keeper who understands jewel-cichlid temperament.

The minimum workable tank for a breeding pair is around 35.5–39.5 in (approximately 50–55 US gal); 47 in is better. The aquascape should replicate the forest-stream environment: soft substrate (fine sand or a mix of sand and small gravel), flat rocks and smooth stones as potential spawning slates, tangles of bog wood or driftwood for cover and territory boundaries, and robust or floating plants (a spawning pair will dig). Filtration should maintain excellent water quality but flow does not need to be powerful — these are fish of slower or moderate streams.

Water chemistry matters here more than with some jewel cichlids: the natural habitat is distinctly soft and slightly acidic. Target pH 6.0–7.2 with very low to low hardness (1–10 °dH); temperature 73–81 °F, raised by 36–37 °F as a spawning trigger. Contrary to some generic 'jewel cichlid' care sheets that dismiss water chemistry as irrelevant, upper-Guinean coastal-forest species do noticeably better long-term in soft, slightly acidic conditions.

Compatibility is the main husbandry challenge. Outside breeding, a pair tolerates robust, similarly sized tankmates — larger West African tetras (Brycinus longipinnis for example), robust surface-dwellers, larger Synodontis catfish. Once a spawn is underway, the pair becomes intensely territorial and will attack and kill anything sharing their space that cannot escape. The safest approach, especially when attempting to breed the fish, is a species-only tank or one where the other fish have a clear size advantage and enough room to flee. The common beginner error is underestimating this switch: a fish that cohabited peacefully for months can turn lethal within 24 hours of discovering eggs on a stone.

Pairing should ideally be done from juveniles — purchasing five or six young fish and allowing natural pair formation is far safer than combining adult strangers, where size-mismatch fights are common and often fatal to the subordinate fish.

Conservation

Rubricatochromis paynei has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it appears as 'Not Evaluated' on FishBase, and no IUCN assessment under either the old Hemichromis paynei or the new Rubricatochromis combination has been published. This is a data gap rather than an indication of security: the species has a narrow distribution confined to the coastal river drainages of Sierra Leone, southeastern Guinea and Liberia, a region that has experienced substantial deforestation and land-use change.

The Upper Guinea forest block — the shared biogeographic home of paynei and numerous other endemic freshwater fishes — is one of the most threatened forest ecosystems in Africa. Sierra Leone has lost the majority of its original forest cover to agriculture, logging and charcoal production. When forest is cleared from riverbanks and hillslopes, the downstream effects on forest-stream fish are predictable: increased sedimentation buries the gravel and rock substrates that jewel cichlids use for spawning, water temperature rises as shade is removed, runoff from agricultural land drives conductivity and nutrient loads upward from the near-zero baseline these fish evolved in, and flash-flood hydrology becomes more severe and erosive. None of these changes is catastrophic for a wide-ranging generalist, but for a fish whose range is already confined to a single West African coastal arc, cumulative habitat degradation reduces resilience.

The aquarium trade contributes minimally to pressure on wild populations of paynei — if anything, the species' chronic misidentification in the hobby means that genuine wild collection is almost certainly lower than casual observation of stock lists would suggest. The priority conservation need is the maintenance and restoration of forested riparian buffers in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. The Upper Guinea coastal rivers that support paynei are also home to the equally data-poor Anomalochromis thomasi and several Pelvicachromis relatives, and their conservation prospects are linked.
