Saxatilia semicincta is a medium-sized pike cichlid of the southwestern Amazon, native to the Madre de Dios drainage of Peru and the Mamoré basin of Bolivia — the upper headwaters of the Rio Madeira. A member of the speciose saxatilis group, it is an elongate, ambush-feeding predator named for the row of dark half-bars that cross only the upper half of its body, a pattern most boldly expressed in banded juveniles. Like all pike cichlids it is a biparental cave spawner, and recent molecular work has reassigned it (with the rest of the saxatilis group) to the resurrected genus Saxatilia.

Taxonomy & naming

Saxatilia semicincta was named by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1892, originally as a variety — Crenicichla saxatilis var. semicincta — in his account of new and rare fishes from the collections of the Imperial Natural History Museum in Vienna (Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien, vol. 59). The type series came from the upper Chaparé at Puerto de San Mateo, Province Yaracares, in Bolivia; the lectotype (NMW 33482) and two paralectotypes (NMW 33483–84) are held in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien. The name was raised to full species rank in the modern literature, notably in Sven Kullander's monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon (1986), which provided a redescription based on Peruvian material with a diagnosis, distribution and illustrations. One synonym is recognized: Crenicichla clancularia Ploeg, 1991, described from Buenavista in the Río Mamoré system of Bolivia and synonymized with semicincta by Kullander (2003).

The species belongs to the Crenicichla saxatilis group, the large assemblage of small-scaled, comparatively small pike cichlids centred on the Guianas and the western Amazon that also includes Crenicichla saxatilis, Crenicichla anthurus, Crenicichla lucius, Crenicichla proteus and roughly two dozen relatives. In 2023, Varella and colleagues published an integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids that split the long-unwieldy genus Crenicichla into several genera; under that classification the saxatilis group was elevated to the resurrected genus Saxatilia, so the species is increasingly cited as Saxatilia semicincta (Steindachner, 1892) — the name now used by the Catalog of Fishes and the Cichlid Room Companion. The reassignment is taxonomic rather than biological, and because much of the hobby and ichthyological literature still files the fish under Crenicichla, that combination is retained here as the primary heading.

Morphology

This is a medium pike cichlid: FishBase lists a maximum of about 6.5 in standard length, with most aquarium and field specimens running somewhat smaller. The body is the typical Crenicichla form — elongate and nearly cylindrical at the front, tapering to a laterally compressed caudal region, with a long-based dorsal fin, a rounded tail, and a wide, terminal pike-like mouth set on a pointed head. As a small-scaled member of the saxatilis group it carries a relatively high lateral-line and scale count compared with the large-scaled lepidota-group pikes.

The specific name captures the diagnostic pattern. Adults are an olive to brownish ground colour, paler below, overlaid by a series of roughly eight or nine dark crossbars; crucially these bars are restricted to the upper half of the body — they are 'half-girdled,' which is exactly what semicinctus (semi- 'half' plus cinctus 'belted/girdled') describes. A dark lateral band and the usual saxatilis-group head markings (a postorbital stripe running back from the eye, and pre- and suborbital stripes) are typically present, along with a dark, often light-ringed caudal spot at the base of the tail and scattered light flecks on the flanks. Juveniles wear the pattern most boldly, appearing strongly banded before the bars soften with age. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus norm: females are the more colourful sex, developing a rounder, fuller belly and frequently a contrasting patch or one to several ocellated (eye-) spots in the soft dorsal fin when ripe, while males grow larger and longer-bodied with more produced fins. Sexing is most reliable in mature, conditioned fish.

Habitat

Saxatilia semicincta is endemic to the upper Madeira system of the southwestern Amazon basin — specifically the Madre de Dios River drainage in Peru and the Mamoré River drainage in Bolivia, the two great piedmont headwaters that join to form the Madeira. The IUCN records it from permanent rivers, streams and creeks as well as freshwater lakes, and FishBase summarizes its habitat simply as 'lakes, streams and swamps,' a range of still and flowing lowland waters typical of a generalist pike cichlid.

No published in-situ chemistry exists for this species specifically, but its drainages are reasonably characterized. The Madre de Dios piedmont carries clear to slightly turbid, soft and warm lowland water that grades from fast, rocky Andean-foothill streams down into meandering forest rivers, oxbow lakes and seasonally flooded swamp. Pike cichlids in these habitats are found close to structure — among submerged roots, leaf litter, marginal vegetation and rock — from the shallow margins down to a few metres. As a benthopelagic species of warm tropical lowlands, it lives in soft, near-neutral water in the broad pH 5.5–7.5 band and temperatures of roughly 75–86 °F that characterize the region. Recorded occurrence depths are shallow; the species is a fish of the littoral and near-bottom zone rather than deep open water.

Feeding

Pike cichlids are predators, and Saxatilia semicincta is no exception. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a carnivore that takes a mix of small fishes and invertebrates rather than a pure piscivore. The body plan — a streamlined fish with a large, wide mouth — is built for the lie-and-lunge ambush hunting characteristic of the genus: the fish holds station among roots, rocks or leaf litter and seizes prey with a fast forward strike. In the wild, saxatilis-group pikes of this size feed on aquatic insect larvae (including chironomids), other invertebrates such as shrimp, and small fishes, with the proportion of fish in the diet increasing as the predator grows. Stomach analyses of close relatives in the same waters routinely turn up insect larvae and small crustaceans alongside fish remains. In the community it functions as a mid-level mesopredator of the structured littoral zone, important in controlling populations of smaller fishes and large invertebrates.

Mating

Detailed field observations of courtship in Saxatilia semicincta have not been published, but the reproductive biology of the saxatilis-group pikes is consistent and well documented in aquaria and from close relatives such as Crenicichla proteus. These fish form monogamous pairs that bond ahead of spawning and jointly hold a territory. Pair formation can be a fraught process in confinement — pike cichlids are territorial and males are larger and can be rough with an unready female — so a pair typically forms gradually, with the female signalling readiness through her swelling, more vividly coloured belly and the development of the dorsal-fin ocelli that distinguish females in this group. Once a bond is established the pair selects and cleans a sheltered spawning site, defends the area around it against intruders, and the more brightly marked female takes the leading role in courtship displays at the chosen cave. The female's bold breeding dress — the contrasting belly and dorsal ocelli — is the sexual signal that both advertises her readiness and helps the male recognize a mate rather than a rival.

Breeding

Saxatilia semicincta is a biparental cave (substrate) spawner, the universal mode among pike cichlids. The pair selects a concealed cavity — a rock crevice, an undercut, a hollow among roots or, in aquaria, a length of pipe or an overturned flowerpot — and the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs to its inner surface. As with congeners, the female takes the dominant role in tending and fanning the eggs and larvae inside the cave while the male patrols and defends the wider territory, the two switching roles as needed. Eggs hatch in a few days and the wrigglers are moved among pits before the fry become free-swimming, after which the pair guards the mobile school closely and herds escapees back to shelter. A specific wild clutch count for this species has not been published; saxatilis-group pikes of comparable size typically lay on the order of one hundred to several hundred eggs per spawn (a genus-typical figure rather than a measured one for semicincta). Parental care is extended and shared, with both parents defending the fry until the young disperse. In captivity the species follows the standard pike-cichlid pattern: a well-fed, compatible pair, soft warm water and the right cave will trigger spawning, and the diligent parents will raise their own fry.

In the aquarium

Saxatilia semicincta reaches the aquarium trade only occasionally, usually as a by-catch among other Peruvian or Bolivian imports rather than as a targeted fish, and it has been kept and spawned by experienced cichlid hobbyists (the Cichlid Room Companion image of a breeding female comes from the tanks of the late German pike-cichlid specialist Frank Warzel). It is a medium pike of roughly 6.5 in, so a single fish or a settled pair wants a tank of at least 47 in in length (about 200+ litres); more length is better, both to spread aggression and to allow the fish to set up a defensible territory.

Décor should mirror the structured littoral the fish comes from: a soft sand bottom, generous cover in the form of driftwood tangles, root bundles and rockwork, and — essential for any breeding attempt — at least one snug cave, length of pipe or overturned flowerpot per fish. Caves do double duty, giving subordinate fish a refuge and giving a pair a spawning site. Water should be soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral (pH about 6.0–7.5) and warm (around 77–84 °F); the species is not fussy about exact chemistry but does best in clean, well-filtered water with regular changes, as pike cichlids are sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous waste.

Feeding is straightforward for a predator: it takes meaty foods readily — earthworms, prawn and mussel pieces, and good-quality frozen or live invertebrates — and most specimens can be weaned onto sinking pellets. Live fish are unnecessary and inadvisable as a staple. The honest caveats are behavioural. This is a predatory, territorial cichlid: it will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, and it can be intolerant of conspecifics and of other bottom-oriented cichlids outside of a bonded pair. It is best kept either alone, as a proven pair in a large tank, or with robust, upper-water dither fish (larger characins) that stay out of its strike zone. Pairing should be done in a roomy tank with escape routes and the option to separate fish that do not get along. It is not a beginner's community fish, but for a keeper who appreciates pike cichlids it is a manageable, attractively banded representative of the group.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia semicincta as Least Concern (assessed 30 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The assessment notes that, while there are no quantitative population data, the species appears common and abundant across its range and its population is considered stable; no specific threats are identified, and it carries no CITES listing. (The Cichlid Room Companion, filing the fish under Saxatilia semicincta, notes only that it has not been separately evaluated under that name — the Red List assessment was made under the Crenicichla combination.)

The species' range nonetheless lies in a part of the Amazon under genuine pressure. The Madre de Dios drainage in Peru has been heavily affected by alluvial gold mining, which strips and contaminates streambeds and loads the water with sediment and mercury, alongside rapid deforestation for cattle ranching and agriculture along the Interoceanic Highway corridor. As a widespread habitat generalist occupying rivers, streams and lakes across two large drainages, Saxatilia semicincta is far less exposed than a narrow-range endemic, and none of these pressures is documented as a population-level threat to it specifically — but they are the backdrop against which the long-term outlook for the upper Madeira's freshwater fauna should be read.
